As for splitting the forums. The Boom forum is working well and the
main forum is becoming a bit swamped. I don't like splitting forums too
much though and think that things can easily become confused, with the
demarcation failing and ending up with threads having to be moved from
one forum to another far too often. However, if they were to be split
Deans split by product is the correct thing to do. Giving Transporter
users and Audiophiles seperate forums would enable sensible Transporter
owners to stay sane. Individual Duet and SlimCenter forums would be
useful too. Creating one called networking would not work as virtually
all the people who write in with networking problems don't realise they
have networking problems.

It's a bit of a shame more people don't write into the beginners forums
instead of diving straight into the main forum.

There's a hidden setting ignoreDirRE which can be used to filter out some

[slim] Running SqueezeCenter on multi-user laptop

2008-09-02 Thread gen-ik

I'm planning on buying the Squeezebox Duet and running the SqueezeCenter
software on my laptop, which is used by me and my girlfriend. We both
have our own user accounts, and when switching the laptop, we always
switch to our own user accounts using the Fast User Switching feature
of Windows XP.

Does the Squeezecenter software run compeletely in the background, so
that there is no interruption in the music, when the user is switched?
To clarify the scenario:

1. user A logs in (and SqueezeCenter is started)
2. user A starts playing music on the Duet
3. user A gives laptop to user B
4. user B logs in by clicking on his icon on the Welcome Screen of
Windows XP, leaving user A logged in

Is there a gap, interruption or does the music stop playing between
steps 3 and 4? This is what happens using TVersity with PS3, for
example. Before investing in the Duet, I would like to verify whether
my usage scenario would work as I'd like it to work.

If it's decided to have product-based boards, I would still like to see

The license fee is tiny compared to what you get from other providers,

If your laptop is wirelessly connected to your network, you might
experience dropouts if XP is unable to maintain connection during Fast
user switching. So SC is running but the connection is dropped and
reestablished.

You can test if you have this problem, by monitoring your wireless tray
icon after switching. Monitor over some time though.

We have been using SC the way you describe it for a long time, but
dropped fast user switching recently. Partly because of the wireless
issue, partly because we were tired of swichting all the time just to
check for new emails. Now we have one account and to identities in
outlook express, much faster.

I realize that there are other benefits from having two accounts, we
were just not using them :-)

I have no idea about how running it as a service would interfere with
maintaing wireless connection during fast user switching.

Reciva (spelling correct) were one of the vendors who were talking
directly with the BBC media team to try to get something official in
place.
In theory ... they do not have access to anything beyond that available
to others, including AlienBBC maintainers.

Now for a bunch of speculation ...
If BBC does turn off the RealAudio (live stream and listen again) and
only provide the Flash access to the encrypted MP3 (live stream and
listen again) but then only uses AAC+ for the live stream then it
would make life difficult (no access to listen again).
If that were to happen then I could imagine that they would enter into
agreements with manufacturers/developers who wanted to provide access
to the listen again content but would need something to try to
prevent the audio content from being easily copied. Similar to the
back-end integration done for parts of SqueezeCenter/SqueezeNetwork
today - without open source.

Re: [slim] AlienBBC - BBC Radio. Why not core component of SlimCenter?

2008-09-02 Thread autopilot

At the end of the day, this is all temporary. The BBC don't have any
choice, they will have to provide a service which internet radio
manufactures are compatible with because that will soon be a major way
of distributing there content - and thats what they do. I they dont
they will die. And to be fair, they do support a wide range of
distribution methods - FM, Long Wave and AM, DAB, DVB, Internet,
iPlayer, Analogue TV, Sky TV, Freesat, Free view etc. the BBC are very
forward thinking and progressive compared to others in that respect.
After reading threads on here and a few bloggs, I have no worries about
being able to get BBC via my slim stuff in the future. It might get
harder before it gets easier, but it will get there. It seems
frustrating at the moment though.

[slim] Before I Switch to Mac...What Should I Know?

2008-09-02 Thread ezkcdude

After 4 years of dutiful service, my PC seems to have hit the end of the
road - most likely due to a virus of some sort. I've been considering
getting an iMac for some time now (I have a 24 iMac at work and use a
Powerbook G4 regularly). This seems like as good a time as any
therefore. Before I do this, I have some questions:

1) Will I be able to stream/play FLAC files throught the SqueezeCenter
interface to my SB3 and Duet players?

2) Is there an equivalent to EAC now for the Mac?

3) Is there a good FLAC encoder for the Mac?

4) Does MusicIP work just as well on Mac as on XP?

5) Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks, for any and all suggestions/advice!

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 1 incorrect Now Playing display

2008-09-02 Thread awy

This is bug 3751 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3751)

I've looked at the code and I can see why it does this. In the case of
an SB1 (and only an SB1), and when not synced, SC will stream one track
after another to the player without closing the streaming connection. At
the time it starts streaming the next track, it looses track of what the
previous track was (again, only for SB1s), although it knows that the
next track has not yet started and hence does not start advancing the
time-played counter.

I have checked the code back to Slimserver 6.3.1 and it is the same so,
although I have not tried running a pre SC 7 release to check, I cannot
see how this would have worked before 6.5, as was claimed.

I do not know why the code works the way it does in this regard. I do
know that all this area of code has been rewritten for SC 7.3 and that
this problem does not occur with the new code.

That'd be a big surprise. Have you tried clearing your cache and

No, except for things you probably know if you've used Macs before:
Most of the lyrics around why Mac is better than the PC is not really
true: it's less stable than XP, it's not particularly good at doing
graphics (if you don't buy photoshop for the price of two Macs) and
video (if you don't limit yourself to Quicktime) and the keyboard is a
mess.
On the other hand: the negative side is also not true: I find the Mac
to be actually cheaper over the long term than a PC because you have a
lot of free stuff from the ix world for things where you would have to
buy software on a PC.

SC runs better on the Mac than on XP because Mac has better
scheduling.
MusicIP works fine, but I cannot compare to XP since I have never used
it there. There is an issue about startup order, though, that I don't
have since I only rarely use MIP on the Mac.

So it has a IR-emitter. Maybe in the future we will be able to control
other HiFi equipment, such as amplifiers and cd players.

No reason it can't, the IR emitter works just fine. In fact there is a
test applet to use the emitter to control an older SB player.

In order to control something else, you'd need software written. This
is all open source, so anyone can dive in if they want. I believe LIRC
http://www.lirc.org/ is being incorporated by a 3rd party developer,
this is the foundation necessary for these things. LIRC has lots of
configuration files available for a variety of devices.

Applets for the SBC are written in Lua http://www.lua.org/
Unfortunately 3rd party developers haven't taken to it as easily as
perl (the language SqueezeCenter is written in) so there aren't too
many 3rd party applets.

I really enjoy the squeezebox, but is there any way i can make it have
static signal on the digital out?

I like to control my volume via my preamplifier and not via the duet.
Is there anyway to make the output signal (coax) static?

Not sure what you mean by static?

BTW in regards to the SD card, the SBC OS sees it as an ordinary drive.
You can access SBC via a command line like any Linux computer and tell
it to read from the drive. Yes, you could put music on it and retrieve
the music easily. As for playing it, this might take a bit more work as
passing the audio data is currently done by SC. This should still be
the case with SqueezePlay, so retrieving the audio data from raw files
on an SD card is a bit different and possibly more difficult.

[slim] SqueezeCenter Disables Internet Connection

2008-09-02 Thread slimman

I have installed the latest SqueezeCenter a few times now. I thought
everything was working great until I restarted my computer last night
and the problem was back.

It seems there must be some kind of conflict with SqueezeCenter and
another program on my computer because after I install SqueezeCenter my
internet connection slows to a crawl. The first time I installed SC, it
actually disabled by network card. I couldn't even connect to the
internet. I had to do a system restore to a date prior to installing
SC.

The reason I know it has something to do with SC is because I haven't
installed anything else lately, and if I uninstall it, or restore to a
date previous to its installation, my system runs perfectly.

I am running Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, with Comodo Pro and NOD32.
Other things I have installed are Spybot SD and Adaware (free
version). I run all of them at least weekly. No problems have been
found with viruses, malware, etc. I am on Cable, getting anywhere from
10-20 down and about 1 up. Using a Linksys wireless 4-port router.

Again, the problem only starts when I install SqueezeCenter.

Has anyone else had this type of problem?

Maybe others have a better idea of how it should look/function?

Wow, nice memory skunk. I recently passed the 50,000 tracks uploaded
mark on my last.fm account, and I have yet to be able to unseat that
Beck track (and you even picked the right one in your screenshot) from
#1 most played. My 2-year-old was the one that loved the song, but now
she's 4 and no longer requests it. My other daughter, who is now 2,
prefers jumping off the tallest furniture in the house to Beck. This,
at least thus far, has not affected my Last.fm account.

I am a big proponent of artwork-as-big-as-possible (as is andyg), but
in the past lost this argument to the powerful
negative-space-is-important-in-UIs camp. Proposing a big artwork
screensaver is an excellent compromise though, as we then give the
choice to the user. And as we know from the old SlimDevices philosophy,
Choice is King.

It is my hope to add this for 7.3.

cheers,

This is a great idea and I'm glad it may be included in 7.3. I love the

horrified to find that of my top 12 most played tracks, 2 are mine :-).
My SC updates iTunes, so all of my plays are in there too. Aside from
my 2 tracks, the top 12 is made up of Disney, Music Together, Little
Einsteins, and Little People. At least Porcupine Tree made it in there
:-). When the day comes that she graduates to Britney Spears and the
like, she'll have to get her own account.

Anybody that doesn't have kids that look at my stats will think I'm a

don't know how well it works on XP but my MusicIP works flawlessly on
my mac. and the startup order for the two programs can be easily dealt
with by setting the two programs to start up whenever you login/power
up your computer. you can set programs to start by going into system

[slim] How do you restart SqueezeCenter?

2008-09-02 Thread MeSue

Seems like this should be obvious, but I seem to have difficulty with
it. I run SC on a headless HP MediaSmart server. When I need to restart
SqueezeCenter, it never seems to work properly. I assume I must be doing
it wrong.

Using remote desktop, if I right click the tray icon and choose exit,
it only exits squeezetray.exe and squeezecenter.exe remains running. If
I go to services and choose to restart the service I get a message
saying it did not respond in a timely manner and it stays running in
task manager. Doing end process from the task manager doesn't seem
like it should be the correct way to do it. It does work for stopping
SqueezeCenter.exe, but then when I try to start it back up again from
the desktop icon, it doesn't run and I end up restarting the whole
server anyway.

So could someone tell me what I should be doing when I just want to
restart SqueezeCenter?

Re: [slim] OpenDNS problems?

2008-09-02 Thread Ron1

Hi JJZolx and MickeyG,

Thanks for your input.

Andyg,

as you probably aware, MS update KB951748 fixed a huge DNS security
flaw. The flaw was nothing new, and apparently was well know in the
security community. To outline the flaw:

“Microsoft DNS server generates predictable DNS transaction IDs. If
the server is configured to allow recursive queries it is possible to
insert fake records in the DNS cache (DNS cache poisoning) by guessing
the next transaction ID that the server will use and sending a spoofed
DNS reply to the server.” – Alla Bezroutchko, Predictable DNS
transaction IDs in Microsoft DNS Server May 2007

“By observing these values of DNS queries over a period of time, the
following patterns were noted: The DNS transaction ID always begins at
1 and is incremented by 1 for each subsequent DNS query; and the UDP
source port of the query, which becomes the UDP destination port of the
response, remains static for the entirety of a session from startup to
shutdown.” – Ian Green reporting on research he did in 2005 for GSEC.
(See recent ISC Diary Entry)

Notice how all of those are similar? Each one has a common thread,
transaction IDs are predictable. Now, look at the CERT advisory from
July 8, 2008.

“The DNS protocol specification includes a transaction ID field of 16
bits. If the specification is correctly implemented and the transaction
ID is randomly selected with a strong random number generator, an
attacker will require, on average, 32,768 attempts to successfully
predict the ID. Some flawed implementations may use a smaller number of
bits for this transaction ID, meaning that fewer attempts will be
needed. Furthermore, there are known errors with the randomness of
transaction IDs that are generated by a number of implementations.”

Reading all of the documentation that CERT provides, even they tell you
that this issue has been around for awhile now and is well-known to the
security community. CERT has some suggestions to help with the DNS
issue. The best one is the simple one, if your vendor has a patch for
BIND, apply it. Microsoft released theirs yesterday (MS08-037). So who
offers vulnerable DNS? CERT has a running list, most of them are
unknown, but the confirmed vulnerable vendors are Cisco, ISC, Juniper
Networks, Microsoft, Nominum, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems.

Ok, with Cisco and Microsoft in the list you have a good deal of
potentially vulnerable networks; add the others, and the numbers will
only increase. However, does this mean the world will end now? No, all
this means is that network engineers and administrators get to come in
overnight and apply patches. Each of the vendors confirmed to be
vulnerable to the issue, all seven of them, released patches at the
same time.

The flaw however, was not my point on posting my findings to you. I
take it that the SC code uses API Calls directly through Winsock to
resolve names, using ephemeral port range 1024-5000 with the old
strategy (the incrementing and predictable one). Knowing that this
method is flawed, surely you could act and try to tighten SC BEFORE MS
do something about it? I think MS, Cisco et el were very worried about
the DNS cache poisoning potential, therefore they worked together to
release a fix on the same day. MS's fix even works with or WITHOUT the
DNS Client component running, which tells you how serious MS were about
acting on it.

However, like you said, surely this is an OS problem then? Well, yes,
I think it is. However, you, as a developer,(and other Internet
software developments) first priority .. should be SECURITY! If
SqueezeCenter is not able to maintain their Names resolver, maybe you
could use Windows API gethostbyname(). At least then we know not only
the right ephemeral port range is used but the DNS transaction ID
entropy is improved also (Safer).

Please take this post in the way it is intended. I am only trying to
post my findings to you, and hopefully they are of some use. Many
(most?) third party developers I presume, will be facing the same
issue.

Thanks.

Beware that if your music isn't all local to that machine and you use

I'm assuming you mean on the home menu of a Squeezebox Controller. If
so, that's a Squeezecenter runtime thing, and you'll only see on the

SqueezeCenter process.

That is, if you haven't performed a search, you won't see the menu

previous searches and won't see that menu item until you perform
another search.

Obviously, that's not ideal behavior. There are plans for enhancing
this feature in future releases.

[slim] Compilations not showing on remote

2008-09-02 Thread gardnerr

I am running Squeezecenter 7.2. I have one album with the genre of
'Motown', which is also a compilation. In Squeezecenter, when I click
Home Genres Motown, 'Various Artists' is show on the screen. When
I click Various Artists, I see the Motown album. This is how I would
expect things to work, so I believe that my tags are all set up
correctly, compilation=1 etc.

However, when I do the same on the duet remote, (Music Library Genres
Motown), it simply displays 'Empty' on the screen. I have two other
genres, each with just a single compilation album, and the same happens
with them.

I know my tags are correct as Squeezecenter displays the albums exactly
as I would expect. Just wondered if anyone knows what may be causing
the problem on the remote?

Kind regards

Rob

Re: [slim] How do you restart SqueezeCenter?

2008-09-02 Thread bonze

I usually kill SqueezeCenter and the annoying SqueezeTray from the task
manager.

To restart SC, I start the service, which seems to work OK.
Or sometimes just reboot the server.

Hi,

After the upgrade to SC7.2 all shoutcast stream do not work anymore.
The Duet controller states; No items found in playlist. Is this a known
bug?

Regards.

[slim] Google Chrome new browser

2008-09-02 Thread kesey

For those who like new tools, the Google Chrome Browser is here:

http://gears.google.com/chrome/

I've been playing with it for the last hour or so and it is working
well. The various Tabs allow independent working and apparently one of
its aims is to manage computer memory well.

So far so good, as noted by the 85 year old who said he wanted to live
forever.

In terms of stability (i.e. not crashing the entire system) I find OS X
much better. I also like the Mac keyboard very much, especially the
convenient USB ports. Also, the graphics on my iMac at work are fine -
especially since I don't play games. The only reason I hesitate to get
a Mac at home is because I don't have experience running SqueezeCenter
on OS X or ripping/compression with the Mac toolset. Other than that, I
really prefer Mac to PC by a wide margin.

With Graphics I mean graphics programs. I still didn't succeed in
finding one that comes close to Xara and has a decent price. And I
didn't find one that comes close to Photoshop and has a decent price.
Plenty of both on PCs
Video: Lot of codecs don't work well on Mac.

Stability: That one I really cannot support. I used to boot my old Dell
Laptop every few month, I'm booting my Mac at least once a week.
I had all kind of system crashes, including kernel panic, but most of
this seems to have to do with the Bluetooth stack, got better since I
ceased using this.
Biggest issue is parts of the UI hanging and forcing a reboot (touchpad
not accepting multitouches anymore, menu bar hanging) or orphaned
processes that I cannot kill blocking access to some hardware or other
resource.

I DO like the Mac better than XP and I use it a lot more than Windows
these days but it's definitely less stable.

[slim] 7.2 Restarting Mp3s

2008-09-02 Thread mfpreach

I just upgraded to 7.2 and when i'm listening to a 5 hour mp3, it keeps
restarting to the beginning after listening for about 30 minutes.

This never happened with 7.1 ,
Is anyone else experiencing that?
