[slim] Is my SB3 broken?
I turned off my SB3 and then turned it back on soon after. The display is now blank and according to the slimserver webpage it's no longer connected. I can see the red light behind the optical output flap, so it looks like it is receiving some power. Has anyone had this problem before? Anything I can do or is it likely to be terminal? btw, it's not just the screen brightness. I checked that! Re: [slim] Recent Problems with Duet Controller
Hi, when I select the menu item "Turn off " then the squeezebox turns off. The LED on the front turns black. What is the right procedure tu turn it on again? I had to press the fron button on the box until it flashes red. Then I had to turn the controller off and on, otherwhise the Search Player option would never succseed. (it would not be able to connect to the player even that it finds it). Then it would connect to the WLAN, and in the controller I had to connect to the Squeezecenter. I think that this procedure is not consumer friendly at all, and I could see my wife throwing it out of the window. I guess there is a more user friendly way to turn the system on again. [slim] SqueezeCenter Won't Start Sometimes
Hello I've got this problem for as long as I have own the SB. Basically, the SC is set so that it starts itself up when my PC is switched on. On a bad day, it won't start and the icon on the system tray keeps flashing. I have to manually quit the application and re-start it again and can sometimes take a couple of attempts to successfully have it up and running. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you. Re: [slim] Touchscreen integration?
I have a friend who has a well equipped Lenovo tablet that I've borrowed a few times to try out. It's great for presentations - using the stylus to "write" on slides that are being projected is really useful and cool. Using it truly in touchscreen mode works fine so long as you don't need to do much inputting. If you do, it can be a bit tedious. As with adding input on a touchscreen PDA. I also found it to be a bit slow, the touchscreen and Windows tablet OS seem to consume some of the processing power. Presumably this will get better as the hardware and software improves. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51139 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Very frustrating
I really think it has to do with your router. Do you have a place that you buy with a good return policy? It's what I would try next. Get a good wireless router (I assume you would like wireless in the end) and see if it solves the problem. This would at least eliminate the router as the problem and I bet you'll find this is the cause. Also try running music from your computer and see if this cut's out too. Set up a 4 hr playlist and see. It could be your connection. I'd probably try this first as a test. Main thing is to eliminate the most obvious stuff before tearing your hair out over settings and stuff. Lots of problems are in the routers if they are older and even in some new ones. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54203 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Where is favorites naming URL information stored?
Hi, Kinda a tough way to word the problem I have having, but once I describe it, should be simple. Before we got the XM plugin fixed (YEAH!), the workaround was to make a favorite pointed to URL xmradio://channelnumber. I made a few of these as favorites and gave them names like "Big Tracks" or whatever the channel is. Problem is, now that the XM plugin works, my SB3 still wants to show the old information/named that I called it based on the URL address, instead of the feed from XM. Didn't I say for library scans? That's not a small amount of data or a small number of files being accessed. A new/changed scan should always be much faster than a clear/rescan, so the time difference won't be as significant. I have an external USB drive that I use for music library backups that is otherwise idental to the internal drive on which I store my library. Maybe I'll run a quick test to see what the scan time difference is between using that drive and the internal one. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54534 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Does SC run smoothly on an Asus eee Box?
I believe the short answer to the question of whether the Asus EEE Box is sufficient to run SqueezeCenter is yes, but there are several caveats that I'll get into below (somewhat long). I own an Asus EEE Box, not the netbook, and it's generally for my wife's use. It's darn cute and quite small (no optical drive). She rarely boots it into WinXP, but instead typically uses the browser in ExpressGate for web-based e-mail and light browsing. And for this it works very well (you can have the browser window open in about 18 seconds). Shortly after unboxing the EEE I thought of using something like it for a SqueezeCenter server. Toward that end I bought an MSI Wind barebones instead of buying another EEE Box. It's somewhat comparable to the EEE Box (Intel Atom N270 running at 1.6 GHz, a similar Intel chipset, gigabit Ethernet, four USB ports, etc.), but it's in a bigger box that can accommodate a full-size optical drive. The MSI Wind is sold as a barebones box, so it's initially cheaper (about 135 USD now instead of about 300 USD for the EEE Box) but you have to add your own memory, hard drive and OS and I put in an optical drive as well. The MSI Wind does have a mini-PCI slot so you can add a wireless card if you want to. I didn't bother because it's going to be connected it to a wired network and I don't use the 802.11 wireless in the EEE Box, either. The MSI Wind is quiet, but not quite as quiet as the EEE Box. There is a fan in the EEE Box, but I don't hear it at all. The MSI Wind has a 60 cm fan on the back which I can hear, but again it's quite quiet. The MSI Wind also allows me to install the OS of my choice, although I could have repartitioned the EEE Box hard drive to do the same. In fact, the 80 GB hard drive in the EEE Box came with two partitions out of the box, C: and D: NTFS partitions. But I've never run SlimServer or SqueezeCenter on anything other than a Linux distribution, with Fedora being my current choice. Right now I'm running SqueezeCenter on a Shuttle small-format PC with a socket 478 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron with Fedora Core 6 and my music on an external drive connected via eSATA. I think the MSI Wind box is the equal, if not the better of my current set up when it comes to performance. An interesting thing about the MSI Wind is it has a CompactFlash slot. Somewhat less interesting about this slot is you have to remove the motherboard to actually install the CompactFlash. Initially I put in a CompactFlash instead of a hard drive and installed Ubuntu 8.04 i386 on it. It ran just fine, but the CompactFlash I used was recognized as a PIO mode drive, so it was somewhat slow to write. After playing with that a bit I added a hard drive, a 40 GB SATA laptop drive I had laying around, and installed Fedora 9 x86-64 (I was reasonably sure the Atom architecture is 64-bit compliant). I later found that by installing Fedora I somehow messed up Ubuntu installation on the CompactFlash and I couldn't boot it anymore (and I never bothered to try and fix it). I installed a SqueezeCenter 7.2 daily in Fedora and it comes up just fine. I set up a mini-network with one wired player and a few MP3s installed on the hard drive and everything worked just fine. The only oddness with this set up is Fedora doesn't boot from start-up every time. It's not unusual to get 2 or 3 kernel panics before it finally boots from a cold start. I don't know if this is related to having the 64-bit version of Fedora 9 installed; I didn't have this problem with the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. I'm not particularly worried about this because once I get Fedora 9 booted it will run for several days with no problems. The up time on my SqueezeCenter boxes is typically measured in months and sometimes exceeds a year; in other words I rarely shut it down. Granted the tests I've done so far are limited, but I plan on making the MSI Wind box my next SqueezeCenter server. I plan on replacing the mechanical hard drive with an SSD, as they continue to drop in price. I'm also awaiting the release of Fedora 10 as that isn't far off (although I may hedge my bets and install the 32-bit version). Lastly, I probably will connect the external drive with the music via USB instead of eSATA. The MSI Wind only has two SATA interfaces and they're expected to be used by the hard and optical drives. I don't expect any problems with the USB interface, but if I do I'll remove the optical drive (primarily there to install the OS) and use that for an eSATA connection to the external drive. I'm not sure what "management" tasks you have in mind, but one can certainly use different programs (at different times, to avoid problems) to access a particular data file folder, whether that folder has music files or anything else. Re: [slim] dvbshout - streaming a complete DVB-T or DVB-S multiplex!
There's a comment at the bottom of the linked MUMUDVB page above that someone has it running on a SLUG (NSLU2), so maybe it's not completely impossible. However MUMUDVB (or DVBSHOUT..) on their own won't work with Squeezeboxes, as both natively deliver multicast streams, and neither Squeezeboxes (definitely) or Squeezecenter (I think) understand multicast sources. The trick with DVBSHOUT is that it can also deliver source streams to a Shoutcast / Icecast server, but my guess is that it would be pushing it to run both DVBSHOUT and Icecast2 on a single SLUG - maybe you'd have a chance if you split them across two seperate devices? However there may be more hope with the latest generation of punchier NAS devices - in particular the latest Synology DS-209+ looks like it might have more than enough power. It may be overkill but I'm waiting for the arrival of a fanless motherboard which combines a dual core Atom 330 with a low power 945GSE chipset for my long planned server rebuild - you can have either individually, but not both together right now (see http://www.mini-itx.com/reviews/atoms/default.asp?page=1 ). The MSI board (now released as the IM-945GSE ) in particular looks really good, but I'd still like to hold out for a 330 processor. This is just to add perspective. I've been using softsqueeze 3.7 (I think that's the latest) and using it to listen to my music library from work. Softsqueeze is inherently problematic and has been for a long time. Each and every day of use of this player involves multiple restarts as well as multiple connection drops. As a bug reporter, the burden is as much on you to try more recent updates and comment if the problem is gone, or you are happy with a different solution (there are over 300 targetted resports to keep the current developers busy). The tip I gave you works in SC7.* and SS6.x.x and all versions going back to the first time Softsqueeze came in with the launch page. It's not the applet version, but it IS a pre-configured launch. As for resolving that bug, my feeling is that the proper resolution is "works for me" - the interface links to the webstart page and it is webstart that is expected to work. Second point, SS is deprecated. There has been no ongoing work for a very long time aside from a recent update for a boom skin and some updated signing certs. Something tells me that you are not as unhappy with having no response as you would be getting a response that isn't the one you want. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For various reasons I consider having the duet in the bedroom (I already have the amplifier and loudspeakers). Unfortunately, when I turn off the player (connected by wires), the lights go off for a while, then come back to bright blue. I assume that this is when the computer shutdowns (it does so automatically if it is not playing for more than 20 min or so). I find the light more than annoying, so you may want to check if the lights indeeds turns off in your settings before using a duet in the bedroom (unlike you like your bedroom to be lighted like a public toilet :-). I'm sorry, but -usability- is up there on my list of important features. I'm not one for skins, but i expect the base UI to be good. Squeezeplay UI was designed for a single use Controller, which is held one handed and it's only input is via a scroll wheel and a few transport buttons. As a Controller its fantastic, on a PC with a keyboard and mouse and operating system it becomes a bit 'toy' like and not much fun - i feel very restricted compared to using, say, Foobar2000. Hence I use Microsoft Word for writing documents, not an emulation of my Mobile phone's SMS imput. I see no reason to use it as my primary media player, i can't see many will. The value for me would be headless anyway, so i could controller my PC audio with the controller from another room and syncing up - hopefully that will get sorted. I'm a huge Slim fan and love there products, they bring me a great deal of pleasure and i must have recommend their kit to 1,000's of people - but i'm not a fan of Squeezeplay PC version - -not yet-, anyway. TBH, i was not a huge fan of Softsqueeze either - but at least it emulated a player, rather than a Controller (which was also audio capable, but still first and foremost a Controller). -- autopilot *Lounge :* Squeezebox Classic -> Cambridge Audio Azur 640a -> Mission 701's. *Bedroom :* Squeezebox Receiver -> Trends TA10.1 Class-T -> Kef Cresta 1's *Office :* Softsqueeze -> Logitech Active 5.1's. *Kitchen :* Squeezebox Boom -coming soon- *Roaming : * Squeezebox Controller -> Logitech mm28 portable speakers / Shure E2c's *Controllers :* Squeezebox Controller x 2 + Logitech Harmony one *Server :* SC7.3b (Vista 64) + AlienBBC, iPlayer & MusicIP headless. Re: [slim] Now Playing list empties itslelf
This is totally repeatable with the following steps: 1. Switch on SB3 (ie power jack in) 2. Play an album and check it is in the now playing list, 3. Play random songs (Music Library/Random Mix/Play random songs) 4. Wait 30s for the screen blank to switch to 'Now Playing' (just in case the 'jump to now playing' is required to populate that list, 5. Press stop, and wait 5s to ensure no timing issues with the subsequent power off, 6. Power off SB3 (pull jack plug) 7. WAIT 2 minutes 8. Power on (jack in) and wait to start-up 9. Check Now playing list - it will show the originally played album rather than the random playlist. Oddly, if I wait only 1 minute or less at step 7 then it appears to work OK (as if the SB3 has some kind of short term memory save, or capacitor to cope with short power glitches). That explains why I had problems repeating the issue. Also, if I play an album rather than random songs then behaviour is OK (ie this is a problem with the random mix plugin). Also note that this is nothing todo with my PC going into standby (with WOL) as I had previously thought. I'm surprised this has not been reported as a common problem as it does seem very repeatable! -- mortod mortod's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54458 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze!
SoftSqueeze was broken with the introduction of SqueezeCenter. I reported this way back in March & it was confirmed. Since then nobody from Slim/Logitech has bothered, apparently because SqueezePlay is imminent. *Eight months* later it seem like it finally may be, albeit in beta. However, as this is a Controller emulator I assume that this will require SqueezeCenter which means I won't be able to run it. I have no intention of moving from 6.5.4 until they provide a basic, stable product. This to me is the most annoying part of owning SB devices, the constant "improving" of the software which invariably breaks something else. http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7525 -- rbz5416 rbz5416's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12089 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54577 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It should be the perfect answer to those who are too cheap or green to run a real big ass server on their network. ;) Be advised that it's always a good idea to connect your server to your router with a real physical ethernet wire. [slim] Remote Streaming SC 7.2.1
Hi! Remote Streaming works really bad for me after uppgrading from 7.2 to 7.2.1. The stream plays for a few minutes and then just stops and I have to reconnect again. I understand that it could be my connection or thousands other reasons but it never failed for me with 7.2.
