Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-18 Thread CodeMonkey

Hi Guys,

Experimental favourites support for Squidgy is in the update submitted
to Apple. You can view and play favourites that have been set up on the
server, but manipulating your favourite list on the iPhone is not
supported. Thats coming in a later update along with Playlist support,
player synchronisation and internet radio love/hate buttons etc.

cheers

A pretty strange reaction, indeed.

I think if you actually bothered to properly read you would realise
that you have just actually just taken me completely out of context.
Even a 4 screen, twice the size of SBc would be 'small'. How big is
big then in the context of this device? Do you want a 15 monitor
bolted onto it?

Why bolted on? An SB4 in a 10 screen form factor could do very well.

And even if i had meant exactly that, it did not justify 1. What part

I would also like to see the programmable DSP from the Boom in the SB4,

2008-11-18 Thread Nonreality

Not necessarily. I know iPhone does a lot of optimization to conserve
power, so maybe it somehow detects an empty stream and shuts it of...
The behavior is completely reproducible: When I pause the stream (on
SC) and then also pause it on the iTuner app, it loses the connection
(and indicates so). When I then try to restart (on iTuner) it says
cannot recognize stream format. But if I then re-start the stream on
 SC it can connect again.

It also seams to buffer ahead quite a bit (30s for my 192 kbps mp3s and
more than 2min for 64kbps streams) so I can only imagine the distorted
playback has to do with decoding issues.

Lower bitrates make no difference, it seems to have more to do with the
track, some songs seem to be more sensitive than others (reproducible).

The strange thing is it seems to have no such issues with shoutcast
streams. Is there anything you do different?

This may not be what you are talking about, but the touch and iphone
cache the entire track so a 20 min song eats up much more memory than a
3 min song. I found this an odd way of dealing with tracks. This may
only be from the device's library itself so may not work this way with
streaming. But if it does then that could hurt performance.

there are slight differences in characteristics, they are so similar
overall i can't say i prefer either really. I would like to have voted
No preference However if held at gun point, i would probably blurt
out SBr. I say this because it found it to be a touch brighter, and i
like the sound. The SB3 was a bit warmer, and i think most people will
prefer it. I guess its also down to the music you like. I'm also quite
prepared to accept my ears/brain where biased because i'm so used to
the SB3's sound. At this level, there is not much in it.

I tend to agree with your assessment, but to be honest I still haven't
had the time to really AB them. Kinda why I was asking others
opinions. The whole reason I was curious is because I replaced my
main system SB with the SB3 and relegated the SBR to roaming duty.
Then one day I got to wondering if I had done the right thing since my
main system is the best one in the house. I AB'd them a bit, but
because of something I added to my set up, it's very hard to get behind
my equipment to switch back and forth.

I do like warmth and that's what I htought the SB3 was better at.

Thanks for putting your opinion out there.

[slim] Lost Favorite with UTF8 Title

2008-11-18 Thread JadeMonkee

Hi there,
I recently re-built my library, and in doing so my favorite entitled
Lunático no longer works.
I set it as an alarm this morning and the backup tone played. If I
navigate to it in SC, it says:

Code:

  Title: Lunático
  URL: db:album.titlesearch=LUN%C3%83%C2%81TICO

This isn't the first problem I've had with UTF8 files with special
characters in their names; the first one involved playlist entries not
being played.
Any help? Or do I have to submit a bug report now?

[slim] Incorrectly marked favourite: two albums with same name

2008-11-18 Thread JadeMonkee

Hello again,
In my music collection, I have (at least) two albums with the same
name.
I favorited one, -Grand Slam- by Richard Dorfmeister vs. Madrid de los
Austrias, and when I navigated to the favorites list in SC, it showed
the album art for the album -Grand Slam- by Spiderbait.
When I clicked on it, it showed some search parameters that I don't
remember and didn't note down, instead of showing the album tracks
(I've since removed it from my favorites list, sorry).
Is there a better way for favorites to be handled?

Re: [slim] PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

2008-11-18 Thread Stuart Hickinbottom
The handheld skin tends to work better on the PS3 - the fonts and
symbols are larger, and the functionality seems better behaved as it's
less JavaScript-intensive.

It's not a great interface, though. If you've your PS3 wired into your
hi-fi/surround system then I think a better approach is to use a UPnP
media server (TwonkyVision/MediaTomb etc) to drive the PS3 - you can
point it at your same music files at the end of the day, and has the
bonus of also serving video.

[slim] SB2 with no remote

So I've got a Squeezebox2 and it came with no remote. I've been able to
determine its IP address, and the address of the server to which it

I've got no remote for the SB2. I tried using my Verizon Fios universal
remote controller (black with green 'OK' button) set to all the various
JVC DVD codes. None of them seem to have any effect on this SB2.

It appears the SB2 currently has firmware v15 in it. Is there a version
of SlimServer which will be compatible? I just want to get this thing
working, even if the firmware isn't the most up to date.

2008-11-18 Thread bat400

OK, I tried 'fstream' (free on App Store). It lets you enter your own
stream, but on my setup it starts coming through then drops after
thirty seconds. During this time the sound was perfect however.

I used to have these same symptoms with Windows Media Player, but I
can't remember what fixed it...

FlyCast apparently plays in the background but lacks the opportunity to
add your own stations.

Anyone tried CastCatcher? Apparently you can add your own streams but
Apple blocked the 1.3 version in the App Store. When I get home I'll
check if 1.2 is still available...

Unfortunately you do need the remote for this, and only an SB remote
will do as the JVC remotes obviously do not have a brightness button.

You can set it to update automatically, never asking for the brightness
button again, but in order to do that you need to go back to setup, and
for that you need a working remote.

I've got no remote for the SB2. I tried using my Verizon Fios universal

It's probably because it wants the brightness button code and nothing
else will do. Unfortunately the automatic update option is only in the
newer firmwares, so to get this option you have to update the firmware
anyway.

You may have to get a remote from Logitech, see here:
https://secure.slimdevices.com/products.php?product=Backlit-Infrared-Remote
This one will work with the SB2.

I believe auto-update is only in newer firmwares, where you can go back
to setup to enable it (press and hold left for 5 seconds). But in order
to get the newer firmware, you need to update the older one...which will
require the brightness button.

It's probably one for a thread of it's own, but if 2 DACs convert an
identical signal at an identical rate, how can they sound different?
I always assumed any differences were due to different analog circuitry

2008-11-18 Thread chinablues

I assume we are talking about The Rolling Stone Magazine 500 Greatest
Songs Of All Time. Downloaded from the internet. If so, this
collection is a bit of a bitch. Many tracks although ostensibly part
of the 'Same album' do in fact have some 'hidden' info which identifies
the source album for the individual track. I remember having the same
problem... I cannot recall exactly how I fixed it, but I suspect I
first used TagRename to rename every file to contain the critical
information viz: Track number, Artist and Song Title. Then I think I
used MP3Tag to delete all tag information for every song in the
collection. This left only the bare file names. Then used Tagrename
to re-create the tag information. Track #, Artist Song Title coming
from the file name the other common information like Album name,
genre, album art...via TagRename's multiple file tagging feature.

PS do this fix up on a copy set of the original files!!

A randomly-generated 63-character WPA2/AES setup is as good as you can
get with your typical home setup (the only improvement would be
periodic password rotation, which is more of an enterprise feature).
MAC filtering and SSID hiding do not actually improve security, and in

2008-11-18 Thread Mnyb

Nice round values for an Lpad R1=10kOhm R2=1kOhm.

There is many possible results for this, this is just one suggestion.

I use a combination of attenuators and power amps with adjustable gain,
in my hifi and powered speakers with gain controls on the back for the
kitchen.

There is a general need for attenuators as there's to much gain
everywhere.
The loudness race is on in amps and CD players too !
Imagine the hifi show room when the sales person just switches between
two CD players without adjusting volume, which one will be better.
I remember some old hifi of mine where i never used more than half of
the volume knob often less.
I seen people actually complaining on amps calling them weak when
they have turn up the volume knob more !

Generally i like it when I can use most of the range of my volume
controls.

Btw I just loaded SC in the classic skin where the volume goes from 1
to 11 yeah ! much better than 1-10

Re: [slim] Incorrectly marked favourite: two albums with same name

2008-11-18 Thread Philip Meyer

JadeMonkee;361062 Wrote:
Is there a better way for favorites to be handled?

I agree. I've mentioned the favorites handling of local music before.
Essentially, SC stores the album name as an identifier for the favorite,
rather than internal id's. So if you store a Greatest Hits album as a
favorite, there's a good chance you won't get what you expect when you
try to play that favorite back. eg. when you scan new albums in, you
may affect an existing favorite.

I guess this was done, as a complete clear and rescan would result in
new identifiers (eg. an album id).

The same issue can occur with artist names - there could be two artists
with the same name. eg. Blue October is a Rock band from USA, but a
UK band exists as the same name. Nirvana was another example. So
you can't necessarily set an artist as a unique favorite too.

It's unlikely that two bands that share the same name also share the
same album title, and that a user would want to set one as a favorite.
I think therefore that the album artist name and the album name need to
be referenced in the favorite to uniquely identify an album favorite.
However, not even this is full-proof, in that there can be several
albums with the same name by Various Artists.

I too dislike that I can't drill down into a local music favorite. eg.
set an album as a favorite - if I navigate to that favorite, I expect to
be able to navigate into the album (eg. use right-arrow on a standard
remote, or click the favorite name in the WebUI).to see the list of
tracks.

Re: [slim] Controller causes Transporter to Power-down Mid-song

2008-11-18 Thread newy

OK, weirdness happening for sure and I'm sure if I can figure this out
then the rest will fall into place.

My Transporter usually (but not always) turns my computer off around 80
seconds after an album is finished even though I have the power setting
set at Go into standby after 15 minutes. This has perplexed me to no
end but now I think I know why.

I performed these tests several times with the power state set at
Always On. I manually put the computer into standby mode when I had
to by pressing the front power button (Dell Tower).

1) I wake computer using a slight movement of the mouse. No matter
what I do in SC, with the Transporter or with The Controller has no
effect on the computer - it stays on indefinitely.

2) I wake the computer using the Transporter's remote, I go to the last
track of an album and press play. The track plays out (hence the album
finishes) and around 80 seconds after the last sound is heard the
computer goes into standby mode - EVEN THOUGH IT IS SET TO ALWAYS
ON!!!

I can't figure this out. I've checked the hard-drive for errors, the
network card says it's working properly and has the latest driver, etc.
Can you think of why this is happening???

Thanks!!!

SSID hiding doesn't make your computer any less secure. It just doesn't
make it any more secure, as it is still easy for a hacker to find you.
So there's zero benefit, while the cost is the potential hassle of

Actually it does. When you've got a computer configured to connect to

computer to another location, it's still broadcasting the hidden SSID

quickly set up an access point using the same SSID, your computer would

ok, so i'll re-enable ssid broadcast asap. will also file a bug report

First you should search for an existing bug report/enhancement request.
I'm pretty sure that one already exists (others share your pain...), so
it's better to vote for that than start a new one.

Swedish radio has been broadcasting DTS for around 5 years IIRC,
perhaps longer. I've some demo music and comedy stuff burnt to CD from

very funny in 5.1.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to try some more of their DTS output.

i guess this could be moot if sc v8.0 will do wi-fi protected setup,

[slim] Receiver bridged mode networking

2008-11-18 Thread bigbill

Hi,

I'm currently using two receivers, one controller, a Linux server
(Squeezecenter 7.2.1) and one wireless access point. The receivers are
both hard wired, as is the server.

I'm getting various issues with the wireless range as the access point
isn't well positioned for the room that the second receiver is in.

So, what I was wondering is whether bridged mode might be better and
use the receivers as access points for the controller. Question is,
will a controller use two receivers and switch between each one
seamlessly as the controller moves from one room to another or will it
only ever use one?

Any help here would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

2008-11-18 Thread ajkidle

The controller (and other devices) do not curerntly support wireless
roaming. There is an open bug for this that is supposed to be
addressed with release 7.3. I have a wireless range expander, and from
what I can tell the controller grabs the stonger signal when it is
turned on, and holds onto it until it loses that signal completely.
The preferred method of operation would be that it scan for a stronger
signal in the background and switch (seamlessly) when one becomes
available.

I'm looking forward to this feature.

rov mentioned that hiding the SSID ...occasionally makes my wireless
pc's flaky..., but I can't speak to his specifics. I do know that when
I was first getting WPA going on Win2K that I would get frequent wifi
disconnects when I was hiding the SSID, and none when I un-hid the
SSID. I read various posts/articles reporting similar conflicts, so it
didn't seem like I was the only one. But I don't know enough about the
black magic of wifi enough to understand the nature of the problem,
much less explain it.

Fwiw, I had no problem with hiding the SSID when I was using WEP, but
of course the real problem is that I was using WEP! Giving up hiding
the SSID in exchange for switching to WPA wasn't a difficult choice.

One person's must-have is another person's so-what, but to help you
decide for yourself why not check the release notes at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Release_Notes. Don't bother with
7.2 at this stage -- if you upgrade you might as well go to 7.2.1,

IMO, every new version of SC is more stable and feature rich than the
previous. However, if you use a lot of 3rd party plugins you will need
to do some work to check for latest versions and make sure they are
updated yet. Hopefully this process will be a little easier in 7.3+
with the new plugin manager.

set at Go into standby after 15 minutes.

 Thanks!!!

newy, I also had connection problems with my Transporter that were
similar to what you describe. I always had signal strength in the 90's
but I live in a highrise and can see quite a few wireless networks
from my laptop. Some days it would work fine, other times I had a lot
of resets with a high control connection queue count. My display would
go blank as you describe but it never put my computer to sleep. I
finally moved my router and NAS to my equipment cabinet and connected
the TP to the router with an ethernet cable. All my connectivity issues
went away, as well as some other problems like the TP not responding to
the remote and a jerky display. I have since purchased a controller and
the system works without problems. If there is a way you can test by
cabling the TP to the router, it may help you to isolate the problem.

 Regards,

I took a look at the WPS thing, and I think that feature will not be
widely adopted by end users. Based on the description I read, it seems
too complicated for the average user.

I read an article, forget where - something more than 25 percent of
home wifi installations are unencrypted. (We all know people who poach
their neighbor's internet connection). Of the ones that are encrypted,
most use the least secure method and the password is the family name or
the dog's name. Why? People don't care and can't be bothered with it.

It's just like home security - how many people have massive locks,
intrusion detection, silent messaging to a guard company, bars on
windows, etc. Just like a 63 digit password, at some point the
intrusion protection becomes more of an inconvenience than it's worth.

It's best to keep personal and confidential information off your PC
anyway, that way, the true risk is minimized. If someone wants to break
into my system to listen to Jethro Tull, I'm ok with that.

My laptop has an IR port. It's too bad there is no universal remote
emulator software I could run to send the necessary commands out the
 laptop's IR port.

Holy smokes, if you really want to you can download the SB remote codes
from the JP1 site: hifi-remote.com and program a $20 RadShack remote.

The catch? You will probably need to spend $30 (+$5shipping) on a JP1.3
USB programmer built by a member of the JP1 development community. You
can find the device for sale at the same site. You will also have to
invest some time understanding the processes (probably several hours).
I'll be honest, this last bit is the tough part.

What you get once you get it working? Practically and endless supply of
$10 to $50 dollar remotes that you can program as if they were those $80
$120 fancy programmable remotes.

BTW, your lap top probably has an IrDA port (fast). Remotes are usually
ASK (distance). Apples and Oranges I'm afraid.

The 802.11i specification amendment states that a computer can refuse

This clearly isn't done very commonly, but there are many scenarios
where this could come into play and may trip over
driver-or-hardware-specific variations.

My guess is that the machine tries to do a periodic reconnect, or tries

It would appear like you were just working fine and then it suddenly

I'd honestly be surprised if it's not higher. Technically, a wide-open
network isn't necessarily unsecure (you can use captive portal-style
authentication, for example, and not allow access from the WLAN to the
LAN, but that's how a hotel or business might set it up, not your
typical home user)

Goodsounds;361238 Wrote:

Absolutely. And with wireless tech, you even have to work hard to set
up completely ineffective security. To carry the house analogy way too
far, WEP isn't easy and it's like never bothering to lock your doors.
Hiding your SSID isn't easy and it's like assuming nobody can see your
green house as long as you water your lawn. The shame is that wired
security is easy because it's tied to physical security, but wireless
security is hard. And it's wireless tech that's popular with the
general public, and wired tech that the techies use. No clear solution
in sight.

Goodsounds;361238 Wrote:

If that were the only risk, you should be okay with that. You always
need to assess your personal risk. Some people live several miles from
any other dwelling or road. Do they need to secure their wireless?
Probably not. Some people live in apartment buildings with several
people they don't even know within range. Probably a wise choice.

For what it's worth, the primary risk isn't to the data on your
computer--it's to your potential legal liability and/or violation of
the terms of service with your ISP for things other people do using
your network.

I live in a condo/loft building too but my unit is 2 floors and cabling
the unit is unfortunately just not an option (WAF). Hard-wiring would
help to isolate the problem but I really don't feel like unhooking it
all right now (lazy I guess - maybe next week). Because I can
reproduce it now at whim I really don't think it's a
signal/connectivity issue but some setting that I might be missing...

Maybe an incompatible router (D-Link WBR-1310)?

Re: [slim] Poll: Which DAC do you prefer SBR or SB3?

2008-11-18 Thread 2eleven

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55106

Question: Which DAC do you prefer?

- SBR's Wolfson's WM8501
- SB3's Burr-Brown PCM1748E

The SB3 suffers from a high pitched whine on the right channel. This is
not from the DAC, but it gives the SBR my vote for sound quality. That
said, I like the display and IR blaster/power switch capabilities of
the SB3, so overall I prefer the SB3.

Edit: Nevermind. It looks like 6.1.1 is the one.

You might be able to use a newer version by editing the
squeezebox2.version file to look something like

1..15 15
* 15

...that would at least put an end to the nagging, but I don't know how
well it'll work. A few times I've hacked .version to make an older
version of the server software accept a newer firmware, but I've never
tried hacking to make it accept an *older* firmware.
