Yes, I think you are right there. Interestingly enough, right now
there's a thread going on where people consider a bug the fact that
when artist has artist role in one album and composer role in other,
then both albums are visible from that artist regardless of 'include
composers in artists' check box. So, SC will make roles of composer and
artist 'see' each other, but not artist and track artist. Go figure.

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

The MediaMVP running GBPVR costs next to nothing
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116008&Tpk=mediamvp)(GBPVR
is FREE) and can play standard resolution video over LAN with no
problems whatsoever. With a decent tuner/capture card, you've got a
solid PVR. The trick is having a strong server system.

I run ours through a modulator into our TV distribution system. With
an RF remote kit (http://www.nextgenerationhomeproducts.com/), we have
a private HDD-based video library that you access and watch on every TV

I keep our displays on our SB3s "off" when turned off, and in a pitch

So I think unless you pull the power plug, the VFDs will continue to

FWIW, I've other VFDs that are approaching 20 years old, and they still

My listening room Squeezebox is used very lightly (only for serious
listening - never just left on in the background - so that equates to
maybe 3-5 hours a week max).

I can see the burn-out from the analogue VU meters on the display - not
in general use, but when the whole display alights such as when pressing
the volume control when it's set at MAX.

It's less than two years old and has never displayed a turned off
screensaver.

I'll be placing a warranty claim when I get around to it.

[slim] virgin radio podcasts

Hi
I've had a duet system for several months and am trying to setup a
podcast.

I want to add a (non bbc) podcast from Absolute radio (aka virgin
radio) of the Geoff show. (link
http://www.absoluteradio.co.uk/djs_shows/shows/geoff/podcast.html)

There is a page on there website for RSS feed etc. However, I can't
seem to make this available on my duet controller. I have copying and
tried pasting the RSS url into the podcasts tab in squeezecentre but it
won't produce a podcast in the ->EXTRAS->PODCASTS-> on my remote. It
does create an empty folder there with the shows name.

Has anyone successfully used Absolute radio PODCASTS on there duet?

Many thanks in advance,

No, you'd need to make Diana Krall the album artist for all tracks on
the album. I run into this problem all the time in my collection and
it's pretty easy to fix this way. As far as I'm concerned it's not a
problem in SqueezeCenter, which simply doesn't have enough information
to work with until you do this.

The downside is that ALBUMARTISTSORT is currently unsupported, so
unless you have another track in your collection with both ARTIST and
ARTISTSORT (but NOT ALBUMARTIST) defined for the particular artist, it
will sort wrong. Argh.

Your example wasn't clear to me initially, but I think I understand what you
mean by "Track artist can't see artist" now, following your second example of
compilation album track artists. I think in actual fact, I raised a bug
similar to this a while back myself. See if this makes sense to you, and
whether you think it's the same issue:

Essentially, when clicking on an artist link, I'd expect to always see all
albums by that aritst, not just the albums where the artist appears with the
contributing role selected.

eg. If you click a track artist, you only see other albums that contain that
artist as a track artist (and not as an artist, album artist, band, composer or
conductor).

Philip,

if you get back and re read the example I have presented, you'd see
that I already have Diana Krall as an artist of her solo albums. She
does appear in a list of artist with or without Ray Charles' album. The
problem is that Dian Krall who sings on a track with Ray Charles doesn't
'see' Diana Krall solo artist. They have different roles (artist and
track artist) and those roles don't lead to each other in browser links
or drilling down in SB. So, all my exercise with the Compilation tags
has a purpose to enable that, to equalize track artist and artist in
visibility to each other, that is.

Actually, there is even inconsistency in this behavior (if COMPILATION
is not set). Track artist can't see artist. Artist can see track artist
but only on the first level of browsing. If you keep drilling down or
follow the artist link further from the first level, then track
artist's albums also disappear.

I understand that it might not make sense to you, but that is how it
works, and that is how I use it to achieve desired behavior. If you
have more elegant solution that achieves the same, I'm all ears (but
please, try to understand the problem before reacting)

That's right - compilation albums or albums with album artists will have track
artists instead of artist roles. SC only lists artists that have artist role,
and not track role, unless "List compilation albums under each artist" is
selected.

So you can browse a list of all artists, or only artists with albums, but not a
mixture, without manipulating the database content manually.

Messing about with the content of the DB manually isn't a great idea! Perhaps
an alternative solution to your situation would be to add Diana Krall as an
additional album artist for that one track (I haven't tried this, but I think
in theory this would make both album artists browseable, and other track
artists would not appear browsable).

The original question was:
> Q: Does the presence of a tag COMPILATION=0 override the VA detection
> and force an album to not be identified as a compilation? (In which
> case, under what artist would it be listed?)
Setting COMPILATION=0 does override VA detection; such that the album will not
be a compilation, but instead be several albums, and each contributing artist
will take a normal artist role, and thus each will always appear under the
Browse Artist link. But that is unlikely to be what anyone wants, unless two
albums have incorrectly been joined together ("The Greatest Hits" problem).

the special one that appears at the top of any Browse Artists page. i.e. I

Compilations are listed under the special "Various Artists" entry. If you have
compilation albums that also have an album artist, they are listed under both
"Various Artists" (because it's still a compilation album), and under the album

I have 2 of these and was on the beta forum, they did tonnes on the

This should improve that situation as it updates the tech.

The problem is that using ALBUMARTIST tag sort of puts track artist in
the back row. Manipulating COMPILATION tags on particular tracks
resolves it. It has nothing to do with the concept of compilation album
or any other concept. It just works and, if I'm not mistaken, that is

But they are not identical. The "Various Artists" that appears under
"V" only contains compilations that *also* have artist="Various
Artists". In my test case several compilation albums (eg with
different track artists) did appear under the first VA item but did not
appear under the VA item at "V".

It would be perfectly reasonable if both VA items behaved the same, as
you described, or SC could just omit the listing of VA at "V". Or,
maybe it would be useful to list at "V" any albums that had
ARTIST="Various Artists". These are not identified by SC as
compilations (unless they have the COMPILATION=1) and actually will be
invisible in the artist list with the current behavior (which excludes
from the VA item at "V" any non-compilations.) It's true, as you said,
that tagging an album with ARTIST="Various Artists" doesn't make it a
compilation. On the other hand, people do tag this way sometimes and it
might be nice if they showed up *somewhere* in the artist list (of
course, they'll appear in album lists.)

Yes, it sounds correct to me.

The "Various Artists" special SC artist appears under "V" and at the top of the
list. Both are identical entries, and are configured to display compilation
albums.

It is not correct to enter an artist of "Various Artists", that doesn't
automatically denote that the album is a compilation; if all artists on an
album are set to "Various Artists", the album is not a compilation, and thus is
not displayed under the "Various Artists" album.

If you change the special name that is used for displaying compilation albums
under, then your "Various Artists" artist that does not contain various artist
albums will display the albums by the artist called "Various Artists".

If you were to set COMPILATION=1 on all songs, then it would be listed under
"Various Artists" without changing the special name to "Compilations". Better
still, tag the songs correctly to say who performs on each song, and it would
automatically be listed correctly.

Re: [slim] Wiki entry on "various artists" or Compilations

2008-12-05 Thread Phil Meyer
There is only a concept of a compilation album, not compilation tracks.

It's the combination of songs on an album that defines if an album is a
compilation or not.

Tags are always entered against songs (obviously!). Any compilation tags on
songs refer to the album, not the song, and similarly album artist tags really
refer to the album, not the song.

It does not make sense to have differing values for compilation or album artist
tags for songs on an album. An album is either a compilation or not.

Perhaps I don't quite understand, but if you want track artists to appear in
the Browse Artists list, then isn't the solution to select "List compilation
albums under each artist" instead of "Group compilation songs together"?

I tried it in SC 7.3 this morning. The integration works quite nicely.

However, I was disappointed with the Deezer service itself. There's not a wide
range of choice in the provided radio stations. I searched for "Pink Floyd"
and played the smart radio. The first track played was Pink Floyd, but soon
after it jumped to Guns'N'Roses! A few tracks later it played another G'N'R
song, and then again after that.

I looked at the related artists. This revealed a small list of 10 artists -
not a massive set of similar artists; missing quite a few obvious choices I'd
expect to see.

However, I searched for other artists, and got 10 similar artists back each
time, so perhaps this is a limit imposed via the SC plugin or the Deezer API?
Searching again for the same artist returned the same 10 hits.

I've had much better experience with Last.fm.

I think it has to do with the capacitive touch detection. You can see
it go awry when the fingers that hold the iPhone (not the one you use
to touch it) very close to the edged of the screen. Or just have your
headphone wire running across the screen. It generally seems to be less
sensitive towards the edged of the device.

Agreed. That's my understanding - but the SB2 (erroneously) doesn't
currently have a log response.

Agreed too. This need for an attenuator is what alerted me to this
"incorrect" characteristic in the first place.

Yep, if I use my left index finger like this guy did I can get the

In that case, Peter, it's a bug. I've plotted the measured output
(blue), compared to your theoretical figures (red) below.

Your theoretical figures are exactly what I'd suspected and hoped for -
perfectly linear (on a log/lin scale) with 0.5dB per "volume step".

Re: [slim] Volume control

2008-12-05 Thread peterw

It IS supposed to be pretty regular steps: 0.5 dB/step for SB2, and for
Boom, 1.5 dB/step at volumes 1-25, and 0.5 dB/step above that.

Here's the SB2/SB3/Classic source code:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/7.3/trunk/server/Slim/Player/Squeezebox2.pm?revision=24173&view=markup
Here's the Boom source code:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/7.3/trunk/server/Slim/Player/Boom.pm?revision=23831&view=markup

The main source code is in the Squeezebox2 file -- the Boom code
inherits that and merely redefines the volume-to-dB mapping. When you
look at the output, they're sending similar "fixed" values for similar
dB settings -- SB2's volume 1 is -49.01 dB, which maps to firmware
fixed volume step 232; Boom volume 17 is nearly the same, -48.84 dB,
firmware step 237. Both send the the max step value, 65536, at volume
100/0 dB, and 61952 at volume 99, ~-0.5 dB.

Below is the map of volume levels to supposed dB gain. If you're not
measuring something like this from your Squeezebox outputs with
appropriate test material (0 dB white noise??) and equipment, please
file a ticket at bugs.slimdevices.com. And feel free to make (and
share!) a patch that resolves the issue if you can map firmware "fixed"
volume levels to dB better than the current code.

Oh, it also looks like a plugin should be able to get the current
"volume" attenuation in dB programatically, by using
$client->getVolumeParameters() $client->getVolume();

Code:

Re: [slim] Wiki entry on "various artists" or Compilations

2008-12-05 Thread wnshall

While investigating SC's handling of compilations I found the following
quirky behavior. I have an album where every track has ARTIST="Various
Artists" and COMPILATION is not set. I set "group compilations" on the
settings page. When I browse to Genre> or Artists> I see "Various
Artists" at the top which contains all compilation albums. As
expected, this album does *not* appear here. (Well, maybe you wish it
would, but from what I understand of how SC handles compilations, I
don't expect it to show up.) There is also an artists entry under "V"
called "Various Artists", where I would have expected to find this
album, but it doesn't appear. I noticed that the html query for the
link to this "Various Artists" contains "album.compilation=1", which
would seem to indicate that it's only asking for albums with
artist="Various Artists" *and* compilation set. (The special "Various
Artists" item at the top of the artist list also contains
"album.compilation=1".) This behavior doesn't seem correct to me: the
VA item at the top is the special one for compilations, the VA under v
in the artist list should probably be for albums where the artist is
VA, but aren't compilations, or else maybe should be omitted.

The quirky part is that if you set an alternate name for compilations
instead of the default "Various Artists" (I used "Compilations") then
you find an item at the top of the artist list called "Compilations"
which correctly holds all compilations and you find an item called
"Various Artists" under v in the artist list that does not contain
"album.compilation=1", and so correctly displays albums with
artist=Various Artists but aren't compilations.  (I didn't check what
would happen if there were an album tagged with ARTIST=compilation.)

Essentially, the "Various Artists" item under v in the artist list is
acting as a subset of the albums appearing in the "Various Artists"
item at the top of the artist list. Does this seem like the right
behavior?

Depending on the rest of the scenario. In you case, it is a
compilation. However, if every track has artist = AAA; BBB (or track
artist = AAA and track artist = BBB, that's the same) then it won't be
a compilation and it will be listed by both of them (by AAA, BBB)

wnshall;366509 Wrote:

This is an area where an interesting combination can arise. ALBUMARTIST
overrides compilation detection, but it does not set COMPILATION tags.
For the most part it is ok. However, it does have its flaws.

For the following write up, please, differentiate between the tag and
the role in SC (and bear with my language :) )

If there is an album artist and multiple artists, then those artists
would be assigned a role of 'track artist'. That means they won't show
in the artist list. Unfortunately, that also means that if somewhere
else in your library, there is other album where that artist is main
artist, those two won't see each other (you won't be able to link one
to another either by clicking in the browser or drilling down in SB).
For example (I must have already bored everyone with this example),
album 'Genius and friends', where Ray Charles performs every track with
somebody else, among others, Diana Krall. If you tag it with
ALBUMARTIST=Ray Charles and every track with its respoective ARTIST,
then those artists get the role of track artist and Diana Krall doesn't
see her other albums, neither they see her in this one. Album is denoted
'by Ray Charles' and listed accordingly.

Way I found to remedy that is to force COMPILATION=0 manually in such
cases. Album will still be denoted by album artist, but artists will be
assigned the role of artist rather than track artists. Consequently they
all will appear among the artists in your library.

Now, interesting situation arises if not all performers from that album
are of interest to me and I don't want them among my other artists. I
found out that setting COMPILATION tag to 0 for only those tracks with
the artists that interest me, would assign to those artists role of
artist, and everybody else on that album would still remain track
artist. So far so god ,but ...

If it's only Diana Krall that I want to make special on that album,
then, its fine. However, if there is at least one more (but not all)
and if I set COMPILATION=0 for them too, then they come out with the
artist role properly assigned to them, but the whole album becomes the
compilation. It is still denoted by the Albumartist (Ray Charles) but
is stored on Various Artist page (in Artists context)

So, I figured out, there are two COMPILATION entities, one for each
track, the other for the album. COMPILATION for the track is a tag that
can be understood as - this artist on this track should be assigned a
role of artist or track artist. Then there is a COMPILATION for an
album that is not a tag that you can set, but rather an indicator in
the database (that one can manipulate), which determines whether the
album is listed with individual artists or in Various Artist page.

So, in my prior example, if I want to make special Dianna Krall and
Willie Nelson, I can do that setting COMPILATION=0 on their track only.
As a result, that album will still be 'by Ray Charles' but listed under
Various Artists context. What I did to remedy that is to set up a
script that is automatically invoked at the end of the scanner process
that would manipulate compilation field on albums table in cases where
there is an album artist for the album otherwise considered a
compilation. Simply, make it non compilation.

Re: [slim] Volume control

2008-12-05 Thread Phil Leigh

hmmm... every volume control I've ever encountered has deployed a log
response, since that is how perceived loudness/our ears work. If you
think the volume adjustment is too coarse at low levels with a
sensitive amp, just insert an analogue attenuator betwixt SB and amp.
That's the standard fix for this problem in every other context.

I think a change like that is mostly a matter of priorities because a
select few people have all three of: 1) the firmware source, 2) the
expensive devkit, 3) the expertise to work in that embedded
environment. Even then, there might not be room in the firmware to
allow something like customizable volume curves, even if it were a
highly-requested feature.

Re: [slim] First Post; Please Help

2008-12-05 Thread Mitchell J. Stein

Mr. Sinatra:

Thanks again for helping me. Yes, the Phil. Eagles got to Big Ben.
No, the Eagles will not win the Super Bowl. It will be the Giants
against the Steelers. Except for the "punt over the goal post" deal,
Pgh. already beat up the Giants. It will be a good game. (I am not
counting the Eagles out yet, but they did kick our butts now didn't
they!)

Your description about ITUNES' criminality explains a strange thing
that happened when I ripped those tunes out of ITUNES and re-compressed
them, uncompressed them, and then put them through some warmth. Now,
those tunes are playing through the Duet and people are having sex 12
blocks away from here. The strange thing is this: You guys told me
not to use MP3, so I used WAV at first. WAV is professional grade
engineering. It is the standard. My father in law wrote about 200
famous rock and roll songs -- neat guy. He told me to do it. Forget
the fact that the ripping took WAY TOO LONG AND it didn't carry the
artwork with it. How about this: After it was done it sounded
TERRIBLE. I couldn't understand. I ate my wheaties, I listened to my
FIL, I talked to Steven Stills who is a friend of mine, I did it the
right way. So, what happened?

Then, you get these professionals who talk under their breath and you
cannot understand what they said. Stills said "if you are converting
to WAV off of a defective file -- like the Apple stuff -- WAV will
highlight the inadequacy. I said "how's that?" Stills then
disappeared into a room and was playing his guitar in his guitar room
and was no longer speaking for the day (a total maniac). So I was left
with this sound bite from him that "was what it was." I then talked to
my FIL who recorded -- e.g., You Make Me So Very Happy -- and he said
"Steve is right, but don't give up on MP3 files because it is all about
the conversion -- can you heat up the music again." Then, to use your
logo, I had a Martini because I had no clue what these folks were
speaking about.

Now, from your post, it all makes sense. Apple is screwing with these
files in other ways. That is why there was only one way that I could
get the Audials One (Tunebite) to make the music sound correct. I had
to use its fantastic "Perfect Audio" feature. What that does is the
following: It rips Apple a part -- kind of like a mountain lion
attacking a coyote -- but then it does it TWICE IN A ROW IN TWO
DIFFERENT RAW FORMATS. Then, it automatically compares the two
versions and it compares the versions to a database and marries them to
come away with one song that is "Perfect;" hence "Perfect Audio." It
takes a little longer but I SUSPECT THEY HAD TO DEVELOP THAT TECHNOLOGY
IN ORDER TO GET PEOPLE TO BUY THEIR PRODUCT BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE NOW
COMING OUT FROM APPLE'S LITTLE PET ROCK AND YOU NEED A REDUNDANT SYSTEM
IN ORDER TO MAKE THE AUDIO COMPLETELY ORIGINAL AGAIN. I am positive you
are right, Frank S., because this is the only explanation I have for the
comments made by the two experts, because the WAV file sounded like a
horse was running beside the recording, and because once I used
"Perfect Audio" with MP3 I learned that MP3 is just fine IF IT IS RUN
THROUGH ANALOG FIRST BEFORE IT GOES BACK TO DIGITAL, SOMETHING APPLE
CANNOT DO!

I think -- if you are correct -- we have the grounds for a massive
class action lawsuit here. Apple sells that they are giving you the
top and best of the best. Yet they might be giving you the worst of
the worst. And they are not telling anybody. What's worse is that
they are forcing you to marry their shitty ITUNES system, which leads
to docking stations, sound systems and a digital whorehouse (Sonos does
not work -- another story) even though all that could ruin a perfectly
good $50,000 sound system. It is about DISCLOSURE. Why didn't they
tell me this before I downloaded my library? What is unfair about
that? How much downloading do you think me and the rest of us stupid
idiots have spent downloading files from Apple?

In answer to your question about analog versus digital on the back of
the squeeze box, if you are using any sort of "computer stereo" (even
the z5500 which is far away from it, but still has features of a
computer stereo), then you are going TOTAL DIGITAL. TOTAL DIGITAL
TAKES YOUR RIPPED, CLEANED UP, FILE AND PUTS IT BACK IN A BIGGER IPOD
-- i.e., the digital source. The analog jacks on the back of the
squeeze box was pure brilliance because it allows you to run it once
through analog. Because this is all timed in 1.4 seconds, after you
"warm up" the music again before it hits the Logitech (or any digital
system), the digital system does not have time to "re-compress" and to
"re-screw-up" the sound you've created. And then, it is taking that
"warm" music and playing it back in perfect digital and thus there is
no distortion! It is "fire in a bottle." Logitech has really thought
this through -- 24 bits . . . and fast! This is explained in
Logitech's materials and it is complete

It worked just fine at release until iPhone 2.2 firmware was released

You can either drag the volume slider or move it incrementally up/down

FWIW there was a significant change to the volume curve for SB2+
devices several years ago. You might want to search for the
discussion of that change. As you've demonstrated, there's always
going to be someone who would like the curve to be different.

At this point in the product lifecycle, a change of any real substance
would likely bring in a torrent of "why did you change that?!" and
"give me an option to switch back!" or whatever.

If the underlying volume curve logic were in the server then it could
be altered by anyone, possibly through a plugin. As it stands it is a
device firmware feature so we're somewhat limited. One feature that
could be implemented would be to modify where the 1-11 scale in the
web UI map to the 1-100 in the player UI. This has been requested
before and I think it would be doable in software via a patch or a
plugin.

Why? 60 is not 2x40 it's 1.5x40, so a level of 60 should be "one and a
half times as loud" as a level of 40. If I didn't know anything about
perceived loudness and dB scales I'd assume that 0 is "silent" and 100
is "loudest", thus 50 should be "half as loud as maximum", which is
around -10dB. Likewise 25 should be "a quarter of maximum" which is
around -20dB. Clearly the numbers you've measured are indicating -8 and
-16 rather than -10 and -20 but the relationship is the same.

Well you're welcome to want that, and what you propose would certainly
achieve it, I'm just challenging your implied assertion that the
current situation is "wrong" in some way. For a 0-100 scale with no
displayed unit I think it makes perfect sense - the implication is that
it's a linear scale from 0-100% of maximum perceived loudness.

but a steelers fan. call it a premonition. (i'm an eagles fan, 9
sacks btw, and a PSU guy as well)

in any case...

i have some possible bad news for you. itunes really is the devil. it
sounds like you were able to defeat the DRM on it, and thats great, but
there are at least two other related concerns i'd have with music from
apple.

the first is that the music you got from apple might have already been
compressed, and i don't mean the file format. what i mean is who knows
how apple masters the tracks b4 it makes them available for download?
it wouldn't surprise me in the least if in an effort to make them
louder, they compress them at the source, which is a headroom and bass
killer.

similarly, itunes itself applies changes to your local files. i'm not
100% on how it does it, if it uses innocuous replaygain tags, or
something sinister like applying compression or actual gain changes /
normalization to the file/music itself, but here again we see apple
doing as it pleases.

i'm not saying delete all your tunes, but considering your enthusiasm,
i would consider getting the source CDs and making FLACs out of them.
and if you like the Rolling Stones as an example, the 2002 remasters
with 24bit sound blow away the original releases. its night and day.
allmusic.com can help many times identifying which remasters sound
best. (but this is a whole nother story, just wanted to clue you in)

one thing i was curious about in your post, it seemed like you were
saying that going duet > analog > z5500 was "the way" as opposed to
duet > digital > z5500. is that correct?

i do the same thing essentially, b/c the DAC in the SB is better than
whats in my receiver. (btw, SBs have a slightly better DAC than the
Duet, but i would never hear the difference. however, you should get a
SB2 or SB3 just for the neat visualizations it does, like the EQ or VU
meters, which i consider very retro 70s and fun)

Sorry, yes "pointless" was harsh actually, i wish i had not used that

existing Deezer users who will enjoy this, it will also introduce
people to the Deezer service (i just signed up). But basically there is
nothing to tempt me from Last.FM, which is much better.

Re: [slim] Volume control

2008-12-05 Thread mooblie

Yes, but the ear responds logarithmically, so for each, change by say
"10 Squeezebox volume steps" I would want a the same relative change in
loudness, say 10dB i.e. approximately a doubling.

That's NOT what we've got.

Specifically: going from 90 to 80 gives a ~3dB change, going from 20 to
10 gives a ~10dB change.

Aside from the figures: do you not find this yourself: the changes are
large at the quiet end, and small at the loud end?

Sorry, should have made my point more clearly - indeed I was implicitly
referring to the Napster service available to Sonos users. Tried to
convince a couple of friends to get a slimdevices product, they ended
up buying a Sonos. Pity, of course - we could have shared libraries
over the net (not sure Sonos supports this).

Thats a very good question, i have just been playing with Deezer site
and it offers a lot more - in fact it's pretty much a cut down free
version of Rhapsody/Napster. Are we going to see full functionality
with the Squeezebox, or are there some kind of restrictions with the
API or due to licensing etc?

Don't get me wrong, i am very excited to see new services being
supported, but unless we have full artist/album streaming it's kind of
pointless.

Re: [slim] Volume control

2008-12-05 Thread radish

I looked at your chart, and to be honest it looks exactly as I'd expect.
The general rule of thumb as I understand it is that a doubling in
perceived loudness is equivalent to an increase of around 10db. If I
had the volume control at 20 and changed it to 40, I'd logically expect
the sound to be "twice as loud" - which means the SPL would have to go
up by 10dB. Looking at your measured values, that's pretty much exactly
what happens (~-18 to -10). Likewise going from 30 to 60 should also be
a change of 10 (and it is also actually about 8). If the response
followed your linear scale, 20-40 would double the loudness, but so
would 40-60 and 60-80. That doesn't make sense to me - going from 60%
to 80% (and it is a scale from 0-100 so I'd guess most people perceive
it as a percentage) shouldn't double the loudness. Your comment that
"not much happens as you drop from 100>40, output drops from 0 to
-10dB" seems misleading, because that drop of -10dB is close to a
halving in loudness - which seems appropriate for the scale change of
100>40.

I would assume you cannot use iPeng to do the inital setup because
during this initial setup the Controller actually does an adhoc direct
wireless connection to the receiver which the ipod/iphone does not do.

Re: [slim] Deezer - Certain SC version required?

the issue is always the same.

I would like to have a choice of artist AND album/track, and it seems
deezer does not offer that, but only a streaming feature, like Last.fm
or Pandora.

The interesting thing is, that Deezer allows one to browse and play the
library by artist, album and track if you access it from the web. Why
has this not been implemented in Squeezecenter? I really would like to
have a european version of Rhapsody - we have all been clamouring for
this for a very long time, and many have jumped the gun and moved to
the sonos platform.

Re: [slim] use iTunes and browse folder without duplicate entries

2008-12-05 Thread Siduhe

There is no workaround which would stop SC from reading both the iTunes
xml and the music library folder and then adding both "versions" to the
database. You could have a look at the CustomBrowse plugin - that might
enable you to define a custom library so that only your iTunes songs
were showing, but you would still have Browse Music Folder
functionality.

The better solution would be to somehow resolve the different folder
paths between Browse Music Folder and iTunes. Where is the iTunes xml
file stored, on the Mac or on the Time Capsule and what is the file
path you are using in iTunes? What path are you inputting as the Music
Library setting? If you used an UNC path, could you use the same
formulation for both?

Hey, thanks, that's a good hint. I was looking for a notification or

canMoveRowAtIndexPath then so I never saw it's being called before the

I would definitely call this a bug in Apple's tableView implementation

Hi.
I like your Zone-Player like syncing. Thought about doing it that way
as well...
A few things:
How do I unsync a single player? Is that by clicking the line for that
specific player?
How do I see the whole current playlist, not just the upcoming songs?
And a bug I noticed and that I'm relly happy to see - not to dis you
because I think it's an iPhone issue and it has been haunting me during
beta and I had to solve it with a workaround:
If you press "unsync all" and then immediately start to drag a player
(before the unsync is finished) the player will get "lost" in an
off-line position and if you try to move it again, Squidgy crashes. The
problem is that you must not call "reloadData" while an element is being
dragged.
Quizz: How do you find out that an element is being dragged :-)

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-12-05 Thread idowantapickle

1.3 is now on the app store - player sync works by drag and drop on the
players menu - to unsync players tap the connection line that joins
synced players together to break it.

You can save your current playlist using the icon at the bottom right
of the current playlist screen.

As before there shouldn't be any issues upgrading but a fresh install
from itunes is recommended.

Ditto here.

It is nice to have the 'real' time around the house though.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-05 Thread Paul_B

Not posted a comment about iPeng yet, took ages to read this entire
thread! Wonder if it is time to lock the thread and start a new one
with a FAQ / Limitations of 1.0 / Known bugs / Roadmap as a starting
message?

Anyway just to say what so many others have said and that is awesome
piece of software. I can't believe you have turned this around so
quickly!

I have followed iPeng development on and off since the beginning. I
used the web based skin a few times but felt it was a bit gimmicky
rather than for every day use. The performance got better over time as
did the interface, but it was never quite responsive enough for me.

I installed the iPeng Native app from App Store as soon as I realised
it was avaialble. What can I say it is just fantastic. It is my main
controller now for my SB3 and SBB. In the past my controller was a
laptop and the web interace to SC but not anymore.

In addition it has demonstrated just how capable the iPhone / Touch can
be with the right software (just a pity Apple are so restritive on so
many things!). I'm now looking at another product to control my home
automation system.

So many thanks Pippin for an excellent product and I have no hesitation
in recommending the purchase of iPeng

Re: [slim] Compilations and "album artist" tag

2008-12-05 Thread Phil Meyer
>the problem is his way isn't compatible with winamp, and lot of other apps.
>
>so its a personal preference on your part.

That's right. It is personal preference, and there isn't a right way (but
there are probably some wrong ways!) of organising music.

For me, SC is central to my music collection. I use it for playing music
throughout the house, and for organising my music (eg. searching/finding
items). I want the best experience I can get out of it.

A lot of my music in my library is FLAC, so I don't have problems with those.

I do use other apps, but they are inferior in functionality and serve less
purpose for me, so I don't worry as much about how music is presented in their
libraries. I don't have all that many albums with guest performers, so don't
need too many occurrances of Album Artist tags. I only use album artist tags
when they are needed.

eg. I use Foobar as a local player for the desktop PC (that also supports TXXX
ALBUMARTIST), but I don't have a need to scan and organise music in a library
within FooBar - it is purely my default player for files opened in Windows. I
use iTunes, but only for syncing music to an iPod Nano for playing random songs
in the car, so I am also generally unconcerned as to how the music library is
presented in iTunes itself. iTunes music library is broken in other ways,
anyway.

BTW, MusicIP, which many people like to integrate with SC, does not support
album artist at all. i.e. TPE2 is read only as Band/Orchestra, and appears as
a column of data; it has no other meaning.

Other people may like complete compatibility with other apps, or maybe do not
wish to change tags, and thus a losing functionality to accomodate that way of
working may be ideal for them.

Re: [slim] First Post; Please Help

2008-12-05 Thread Mitchell J. Stein

Thanks for the compliment, but I was merely spitting back what you guys
told me.

Again, the only issue is whether this "de-apple-ization" of the
Doberman will lead to a mid-life crisis. Certainly, my intake of Whey
will increase along with my military presses. Hope springs eternal on
all fronts. Sad.

By the way "Audials One" -- $50 -- was the system I used to "rip apart"
the thievery created by Apple and my Ipod. All of my tunes are now in
Windows Media Player (thanks to Audials One), sitting nicely waiting
for the Duet to transport them to the nearest "way station" ("Heaven
Can Wait," Warren Beatty, 1980). I'll wait for the Apple Police to get
here, then I'll take them to court -- I am a trial lawyer and I am
pissed off. Here, I downloaded 7,000 tunes from I Tunes (everything
except the Beatles) and then I learned that I am a miniature turtle,
stuck inside of an IPOD. Then, they try to sell me all this equipment
that "digitalizes the Steeler football games." I've been to all 6
Super Bowls in person, and the answer was NO NO NO NO NO NO.

So, I was mistaken on the price of my little saintly system that I will
use most days:

Logitech z5500 - $400.00
Logitech Duet - $400.00
Audials One- $ 50.00.
(Plasma TV - they cost virtually nothing now, and use a Coaxial cable
as it sounds the best; it plugs right into the coaxial input of the
"piece of shit" z5500 if that is what you use -- since everybody says
they are "bad news," you can get one almost anywhere.)

Now, don't get me wrong. My Phillips is 50" or so. But my theater
room is 100". So, on the "big football games," I'll go into the media
room. But not if I can help it. I like this z5500 -- it just sounds
good.

Otherwise, as I said, you can't get me out of here. And, in a day or
two, every room will have a squeeze box just so I can "control the
house" from in this small study. Eventually, it will be the movie
Psycho.

I looked at your website and background and you obviously know what you
are doing. You've got the two squeeze boxes -- one wired and one
wireless. You figured it out -- probably long ago.

I wish I had learned sooner. You can only listen to "Stairway to
Heaven" in a virtual stairway so many times before you say enough is
enough.

Peace, and thanks.

Mitch.

Hm. I'll play around with it a bit.
The problem is: the second row hold the TrackStat rating stars, which
are only available if you've got TrackStat installed.
On the other hand I will probably need to show it all the time anyway
for the next release, but then ther's something else.
Short: Let's see...

Yesm I saw that one. Did I not reply? Sorry.
I see the point and I'm thinking about how to apply them, I don't want
them to take up as much space as in the playlist.
