Re: [slim] Help with volume normalization/ReplayGain

2009-03-06 Thread jeebers

It's worth noting that a lot of people (myself included) find that even
when playing random, individual tracks, album gain is the best setting
to use.

Track gain makes the loudest point of each track equal. This means
that the loudest part of e.g an acoustic guitar track will be the same
as the loudest point of a full-on hardcore techno track. Personally I
find this sounds odd, and album gain gives a more natural volume
levelling.

I have got so fed up with the unreliablity of BBC radio on my
Squeezebox that I now use a Roberts digital radio in the kitchen and my
Freeview TV in the lounge.

I am perplexed as to why my wireless laptop can stream the same BBC
feed flawlessly whilst my Squeezeboxes & Boom stutter. My squeeze
devices have no problems with any other radio services (Shoutcast,
Last.fm etc) or higher bandwidth local flac files.

[slim] BBC WMA Radio streams cause my SB3 to reboot

2009-03-06 Thread chris.mason

(I posted this as a reply to another thread on listening to BBC Radio,
but I don't think it was entirely appropriate there - apologies for the
multi-posting).

I don't believe this is a plug-in issue, but a problem with the WMA
feeds from the BBC.

I'm based in the UK, so should have no problem getting the feeds (from
a legal perspective anyway).

I'm running SC7.3.3 on Ubuntu 8.10, with a wireless SB3.
(Version: 7.3.3 - 25156 @ Wed Feb 25 03:12:29 PST 2009)

I've found that the live AlienBBC streams for Radio 2 and 4 to be
reliable.

For BBC iPlayer, I've given up trying to listen to the feeds. All the
live feeds consistently cause my SB3 to crash and reboot. The feeds
play for about 30 seconds (I'm guessing the buffer size) then it all
stops. I'd love to listen to these feeds for the higher bit-rate. I
don't believe this is a BBC iPlayer plugin issue. I have copied the
high bit rate WMA URL into "Tune in URL" and I get the same issue.

Through the "More Radio.." menu, I can play the 65Kbit WMA streams
without problem on the whole, certainly they don't cause my SB3 to
reboot.

Anybody else experienced this problem of the 96k streams causing the
SB3 to reboot or can explain what might cause the problem? I can
understand that streams are not always perfect, you get rebuffering,
stuttering and so on, but I don't expect a stream to cause my SB3 to
reboot.

Here are the URLs I've been using:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/wm_asx/aod/radio2.asx
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/wm_asx/aod/radio4.asx

Any help would be much appreciated!

TIA
Chris.

Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??

2009-03-06 Thread bpa

I can't offer any suggestion for the iPlayer MP3/WMA streams but the
RealAudio streams used by AlienBBC are delivered using RTSP on port 554
whereas on a PC with iPlayer they are delivered over HTTP on port 80. So
in relation to RealAudio the services cannot be directly compared.
Mplayer does not support RTSP over HTTP.

Some routers (e.g. NetGear, Apple) treat the RTSP traffic "special" for
video/audio streaming (e.g. Application Level Gateways settings) but
RealNetworks RTSP and standard RTSP (as used by Apple) are different
and seems to cause some problems.

Some of the changes we've implemented in 7.4 still need to be backported to

I tested these urls using SC 7.4-25345 on ubuntu 8.04 and they played
without interruption on my SB3, Duet and Boom. Sorry, I don't have a
7.3.3 version to test them on.

The url's however would not verify when I tried to add them to my
Squeezenetwork favorites, but I could play them from an opml file of
favorites which I use on Squeezenetwork.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks Ramage.

I'm hesitant to go to 7.4 at the moment, still getting to grips with
7.3.3.

Right now I'm playing the Radio 2 feed from the above URL, and its

The other thing I've done is switched from direct streaming to proxied.
Dunno if that would make a difference though.

Re: [slim] BBC WMA Radio streams cause my SB3 to reboot

The BBC live streams are WMA. "Proxied" only relates to MP3 streams. To
get the server to decode the stream change under FileTypes "Windows
Media" native to disabled. If you are not running Windows you will need
to install some server WMA decode support

There have been a few other reports of other WMA stations causing
reboot of Boom and SB3.

I'm running on Ubuntu, and have AlienBBC installed (and consequently

Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??

2009-03-06 Thread bpa

Possible reasons why AlienBBC won't play
- you are using stream.mp3
- you are using bit rate limiting (Windows only).
- you have a security s/w which is blocking network access (Windows
only)
- your router has ALG enabled which blocks port 544
- you have an old firmware in an Apple Airport Express
- mplayer is not properly installed or not properly built.
- network radio station timeout is too short.

Re: [slim] OT: Recommend a digital camera?

2009-03-06 Thread Pale Blue Ego

My everyday camera is the unusual hybrid Canon TX1. It's a
cigarette-pack-sized camera that has a 10x optical zoom lens, takes
hi-def video(1280x720) with stereo sound, and can be used as a stereo
(16-bit/44.1) audio-only recorder with surprisingly good fidelity from
the built-in microphones (the mics are behind those little holes on the
back of the flip-out LCD)

Unfortunately, Canon seems to have abandoned the hybrid design; there
was no TX1 replacement in their 2009 lineup. Maybe it was robbing
sales from their more expensive video-only cameras. Anyway, it's a
wonderfully tiny camera with excellent capabilities. I paid $325 for
mine last summer.

Re: [slim] Problems with PC name on network

2009-03-06 Thread eJohn

Name resolution occurs either by Netbios or DNS. For DNS, one of your
machines must act as a DNS server to resolve "names" to "addresses."
In your case, loftviao = 192.168... For Netbios to work, you need to
ensure that 1) all named machines are on the same subnet, and 2) you
invoke Netbios on the network cards for resolving names. On XP, this
is done on the TCP/IP setting checkbox, "enable Netbios over TCP/IP"

I have seen many posts, but have not been successful getting .mpa files
to play on a Windows server. Can you advise WHAT your SECRET was?

I am using Windows Server 2003 to host SC 7.4. I use iTunes, and
everything functions fine, except that unprotected AAC files (mp4) have
no sound. I have loaded QuickTime on the server, but that did not good.
I have enabled LAME, but that did nothing.

Re: [slim] Help with volume normalization/ReplayGain

2009-03-06 Thread soxfan

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm interested in doing this as well and
have a couple of questions.

First, can someone provide a link to the applyreplaygain.pl script? I
couldn't find it on robinbowes.com, as suggested. I couldn't find it
anywhere on slimdevices.com (wiki, plugins, etc.). I got a lot of hits
with Google, but none to this actual script. The closest I came was
another Perl script called flaculance.pl, which looks like it does
something similar, but I'd really like to try the suggested one if

This is a good point. Since I haven't tried any replay gain methods
yet I can't say for sure if it applies to my listening tastes, but I
can certainly see the point. So, assuming I wanted to try album gain
instead is there any way to apply it to a bunch of flac albums at once?
Or am I missing the point about what the applyreplaygain.pl script
does?

Lastly, assuming I eventually find the script and run it against my
collection, then find that I don't like the results is there any way to
mass-undo the changes, or do I simply turn of the Smartgain setting in
SC?

TIA,
John

soxfan-
Won't answer all your questions, but I'll try to answer a few:
Don't know how to find the script listed... but there are other methods
for setting the REPLAYGAIN tags - I did mine using mp3tag, which you
should be able to find on the net via a google search.
In squeezecenter, you can choose to use album gain, track gain, smart
gain, or no volume adjustment (I believe this is set for each player).
Smart gain simply chooses album gain or track gain depending on the
makeup of the current playlist. It's easy to switch between them.
As stated above, you can choose to turn off this function in
squeezecenter. The gain settings for each album and track are stored
in the tags - the actual music isn't changed at all. (One exception:
there are methods for adjusting the actual FILES to adjust the gain - I
believe this is only ever done on MP3's, but you should definitely AVOID
that approach... I believe that's for people who want volume
normalization between tracks on a player which doesn't support the
REALPLAY tags - such as most portable MP3 players.)

Re: [slim] So what about Movies

2009-03-06 Thread sander

Another vote for popcorn hour, but I think the choice of movie player
still comes down to where you expect to get movies from, and where you
think you'll get them in the future.
There's no equivalent of MP3 or FLAC, you either rip your movie from
the encrypted form it comes in or you buy a box that's specific for
that encryption.
Popcorn hour reads Xvid/Divx (mostly), DVD (iso and vosub) and h.264.
If you can get movies in these formats, I think Popcorn Hour or a
similar Sybas player is the easiest to use solution out of the box.

You can read about it here

from here http://projects.robinbowes.com/download/apply_replaygain/

As tcutting says, there are various ways to apply replay gain tags,
including Robin's script, mp3tag, and foobar 2000 to name just a few.

Re: [slim] Help with volume normalization/ReplayGain

2009-03-06 Thread soxfan

Thanks for the replies. I was missing the "_" between "apply" and
"replaygain" and that was messing up my searches.

Should have mentioned that my music files are on a Linux system. Yes,
I know that the programs mentioned reportedly work with Wine, and that
I could setup a Samba share and access my files remotely, and that
there are probably a couple of other ways I could use these programs.
But I think in my case a nice command line utility will do the trick.
I'll try to give it a shot this weekend.

Thanks again,
John

Well, it stems from the concept that in the UK, a -person- isn't "made
redundant", an -instance of a role- is. In other words, a role is found
to have redundancy (i.e. multiple people doing it), so the redundancy is
removed. Having said that it doesn't always make sense - in the current
climate entire roles are being eliminated in the quest to save money.

Anyway, why are you all assuming Mike was pushed? Maybe he was just
made a better offer elsewhere - after all, web managers must be ripe
pickings for headhunters, being so visible. Logitech are cutting jobs,
but I'm not sure we should do Mike the disservice of assuming it's
related.

And a better offer could even be "less pay, but shorter commute" or
even "you get to work with old friends".

There are a lot of reasons to change jobs.

Depending on circumstances, things like long commutes, friendships,
time with family, etc, can rank high on the list of reasons to change
jobs.

This is what I've always wondered. I've asked the same question and
didn't get a response.

Anyway - I think it's a brilliant model - why a stupid computer when
the database could be stored inside the Squeezebox? The Squeezebox
could then be pointed to any NAS or share on the network.

We always talk about SD bundling a NAS with their device, or running SC

[slim] Various Artists: Is this the intended behavior?

2009-03-06 Thread Lleo_

When I navigate on my SB3 to a specific genre, and within that to
Various Artists, it brings up all the Various Artists albums I have,
not just the ones in the genre I selected.
On the screen it displays:

'selected genre'/Various Artists 1 of 139
'Title of my first Various Artists album'

but the first Various Artist album I have has nothing to do with the
genre I picked and the 139 is the total of albums I have in the Various
Artists, of which only one is in the selected genre.

Is this the intended behavior? I am fairly sure that is wasn't always
like this. I use SqueezeCenter from Slimserver 5.x versions.

Details: SqueezeCenter 7.3.2 on Ubuntu 7.10 and feeds my SB3 over
wireless connection. Everything works fine except this quirk.

Thinking about it, my fave music player (Foobar2000) probably ignores
