I pretty much know when my SB3/Boom are connected to SN. I use SvrPowerControl (great plugin) to switch off SC at night, and switch over my SB3 and Boom to SN. Then at 6.30 the server restarts and reconnects those devices. Works very well. peterw;415674 Wrote: > I always figured that was a feature. [slim] Any new toys coming out from SD
Hello I have more SBCs than most people can confortably imagine, a Duet, a Boombox and my personal favorite iPeng. (The Transporter is a little overkill for me, and not quite in the price range sweet-spot I can smuggle past my budget) My question, which will probably be answerd by the usual "We at Logitech don't comment on future" -- Is there something new coming out from SD? Could we at least get some gossip going? I don't really know what more I could ask for, but if it is shiny, electronic and comes from SD - Chances are I'll buy it ;) SD does not do video, so it is probably pointless to ask for a MNT with logitech branding... -- Sike Sike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2458 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62455 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Home Server - Vortexbox & MiniITX - Positive Experience
Hi All, Like a lot of users as soon as I bought my first SB kit I started looking at a 'server' so that I can run my music 24/7 without having laptop on. I initially looked at a NAS, the majority of posts are around NAS's on the forums, however I ruled this out, I personally thought that the NAS I was looking at (Qnap) was expensive for the spec. I then looked at mini pc's such as TranquilPC, FitPC etc. and decided on a Mini ITX solution http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=44 Similar to the above however the 330 processor & cd drive plus added my own RAM/HDD (went for a 1Tb drive), the total cost including the HDD was about £290 of which 1/3rd was storage. In terms of operating system I looked at Windows Home Server, Ubuntu & Vortexbox - WHS ruled out due to cost, I loaded Ubuntu onto the server and it worked very well. However I'd previously trialled Vortexbox on an old pc and was impressed, the ability to automate ripping/tagging/artwork for cd's is great and is going to make it a lot easier to re-rip my collection into FLAC - its easy to interact with and combined with SrvrPowerCntrl is, for me, an excellent solution, streaming to my Duet & Boom. As the box has Squeezeplay included I'm going to move it into my office (connect to router via homeplugs) and add some speakers to the box to have enabled another zone. All in all I'm happy, there is still a fair bit of work to get it running exactly as I like and Vortexbox keeps being improved, new 0.6 version just out. I'd recommend looking at a MiniITX solution for those thinking of home server options Any questions on the set-up please let me know. Re: [slim] Any new toys coming out from SD
I've mentioned it before, but I don't mind bringing it up again: Wifi headphones. A sort of cross-breeding between a Duet Receiver and a Boom, that you can wear on your head. Top-quality headphone speakers, controlled via the Controller. Rechargeable (obviously), with a convenient drop-them-in-the-cradle charging stand much like the Sennheiser wireless headphones. I have a set of Sennheisers, and I like them well enough, but the sound quality is not top-notch; I know the Logitech/Slim engineers could do much better. Oh, maybe include some very basic controls on the phones themselves: volume, on/off, perhaps next and previous track, maybe even pause. Whatever minimal set of buttons are on the phones would have to have tactile differences, so they could be operated without taking the unit off your head to look at it. But browsing/selecting music would pretty much have to be done via the Controller. A listening time of, say, around four hours on a charge would be acceptable to me. I know it would take some development effort, but I have a lot of faith in the engineering team from Slim-plus-Logitech. If such a thing were available, and up to the high-quality standards of the Boom and the rest of the SB line, I'd gladly pay the same price as a Boom. There are times when it's simply better to listen to music with headphones, and the options available right now either tether me to a very specific location with a wire, or give me freedom at the cost of audio quality. Someday, perhaps, the SqueezePhones (ick! -- need another name) will be available. Until then, I'll continue to hope. -- Dogberry2 Dogberry2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18883 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62455 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Any new toys coming out from SD
- Love the universal remote idea, and have been wqanting the same for a while. - Think the headphone idea's great too - Would like to see it integrated into 3rd party receivers instead of DLNA/UPnP (mentioned in anohter thread) - Need to target custom installations with in-wall options, in mulitple colors (via faceplates)... kind of like a SBC you can mount in wall (fixed or removeable)... Heck, an in-wall mount/charger for the SBC would be a start (and very versitile), but the final option would need to be the size of 1-2 normal outlet/switchboxes. This can be expanded with amplified SBR-type devices that can be mounted in wall as well (maybe as part of the in wall charger) - one of the most important things that would be great would be a SERVER solution. Maybe a NAS-type device with about a terabyte of storage that comes pre-installed with SC and is 100% completely controllable via a web-interface (including software updates). No more having to jump through hoops to get SC running & maintined on a headless device like we do now. Just pluig and play. At a nice price point (<$300), I think this could help SlimDevices get a larger market share If the box had a CD drive that could rip and catalog your library on the fly as well (for a little more $) that would be even better. The ability to buy music via the SC web intergace or SBC would be nevessary too in order to make this a truly all-in-one solution. - Hardware that can use the 802.11n spec, especially in the 5GHz range (2.4 HHz is really crowded) and gigabit ethernet (Overkill, I know)... -- jrfuda John Server: Thecus N5200 Pro Players: 1 SB3, 5 Booms, 3 Duets (9 players total) jrfuda's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62455 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Recent Re-buffering problem
The difference is the amount of overhead used by wireless transmission. It was one of the goals of the wireless community as people found that with WEP the overhead was nearly one to one. That meant an 11 kbps connection only had about 6 kbps of usable bandwidth. WPA reduced the overhead and WPA2 reduced a whole lot more. What your computer that is running SqueezeCenter is doing when the stuttering starts is also at issue here. More and more I find programs install on my windows machine with "auto update" or "quick start" applications that start with my OS. Every time I install anything now I go to Start - Run- MSCONFIG and remove anything I don't need running from the start up. I once had a problem that I had to call MS support about and the problem ended up to be a start up program. As far as the headphones go. They'd need to be a self contained unit, not dependent on aything else for playback, but still controllable with a SBC or SC, if desired. They'll need minimum controls on them (next, prev, play, pause, volume), but playlists, songs, etc, will have to be iniitaly sent to them via SC or and SBC... kind of the iPod Shuffle of squeezeboxes as far as fetures go... There could be a way to set up a handful of preferred playlists (kind of like the preset buttons on the boom) that are triggered by buttons (maybe a single one that rotates through "x" presets) so you can use the squeezephones (yes, I know y'all hate that name) without a secondary device after setting them up, initially, with SC. -- jrfuda John Server: Thecus N5200 Pro Players: 1 SB3, 5 Booms, 3 Duets (9 players total) jrfuda's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62455 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I have too many digital clocks in the house as it is (three in the kitchen alone, built into appliances) and not one even has an option for AM/PM. My philosophy: If I see 9:00 displayed on a clock and I do not know if it is AM or PM then I have a lot more serious issues than being late for an appointment. :) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62439 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Best Way to Extend Wireless Range (into garden)
Hi Thinking out loud here, so there are actually two questions. Any suggestions and advice welcome. I'm generally OK tech-wise once pointed in the correct direction and given enough time to digest the info. I have 2x SBRs 1x SBC and soon will have a Boom. I have no issues with my wireless setup in the house. The only problem is that with the router positioned to give good coverage throughout the house reception in the garden is duff. Lots of stone walls etc. Q1 If I just want to increase the wireless coverage to include the garden what's the best way? Q2 I am considering using one of the SBRs and an amp as a dedicated source for a pair of external speakers on the back of the house. There would be no problem having this SBR in a wired configuration and close to the patio in question. If I do this can I use this SBR as a wireless bridge to allow the SBC to work in the garden? Thanks for any suggestions. Re: [slim] Associating album art to wave files - possible?
A lot more arguments for using AIFF than WAV. You can do everything with AIFF that you can with FLAC and considerably more because it works with iTunes, which, of course, FLAC doesn't. Apart from the space issue, which is probably going to be significant only for tracks used on an iPod (and it's easy to create ALAC versions specifically for that purpose) AIFF is better than ALAC for Squeeze Box use, because the FF and RW on SqueezeCenter also work, which they don't with ALAC. We see this in the US a lot with high end audio, and with many other products, where the manufacturer has a notion that such discounting somehow affects the perceived value of the product. It's a game, but retailers are often forced to play - if you don't sell XXX for MSRP then either you don't get any more XXX to sell. Somehow, though, I can't see that philosophy from Logitech - maybe an overzealous distributor. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62265 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

From SC it should get full resolution artwork in 320x320 for NowPlaying and 75x75 for the thumbnails. Some online services - e.g. Last.fm - have low res artwork that doesn't look too well on the big screen in iPeng but that should be similar in SC. [slim] SqueezePhones?
I was just reading the "Any new toys coming out from SD?" thread and I read jrfuda's post about SqueezePhones. jrfuda is basically asking for wireless headphones that works like a SqueezeBox. Has anybody tried to connect a BlueTooth headset to the computer running a SqueezePlayer? Some Bluetooth headset solutions come with analog (3.5mm stereo) connection. I'm talking about a bluetooth dongle on the computer so the connection is digital all the way to the earpiece. Has anybody tried this? -- agillis rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62475 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The remote itself is fine: batteries are fresh, you can see the transmitter light with a cell phone camera, the SB3 responds eventually, etc. The router (an Actiontec MI424WR) appears to have the most current firmware. I didn't see any conflicts in its setup (but I just discovered this program today, and have to dig a little deeper in all the settings). Sometimes the up/down arrows respond, other times NOTHING does. The only solution is to unplug & reconnect the power. Your suggestions about "running a ping"...I don't know how to do that. Nor do I understand what a "bridging loop" is, or a "UI lag". As I've said, I'm ONLY using this with the squeezenetwork, my computer is OFF, so it's not scanning a library or disk! The SB3 is connecting directly with the router, so I don't get how running squeezecenter on a different computer helps. Am I unreasonable to expect the OFF button to override whatever the unit is doing & turn the damn thing off?? No other remote, with any other comsumer electronics gear I've ever owned, is this flaky. -- izzym izzym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22568 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

(See my previous post) 2) Never heard of Netstumbler...where can I get it? How does one go about changing the channels on a router? Ugh...I'll have to take a very close look at that router manual & software. 3) SC...you mean squeezecenter? I'm NOT using that, but does squeezenetwork do the same thing? Wired is NOT an option...my system is in the basement, and the router is all the way upstairs in the bedroom. Wireless operation was a key reason for getting this. I live in an Eastern PA suburb(Allentown area) & don't think there's anything out of the ordinary RF wise. -- izzym izzym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22568 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

A lot of people asked for it. 1. Will try again tonight to click short. 2. I didn't select "m" mode, as I said no matter it is ">", "+" or ">|" it will trigger the mixer, only under "i" mode the error message related to the mixer not show up. Re: [slim] why is the sb3 remote SO unreliable?
OK, the router's channel is set to "automatic"...I can choose manually any number from 1 to 11 if needed. SSID enabled, MAC authentication disabled. The software reports normal, connected, "GO" status. Don't know if any of this helps. -- izzym izzym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22568 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Best Way to Extend Wireless Range (into garden)
I use a Linksys WRE54G wireless repeater for the garden. Its placed high on the internal wall in the room next to the garden and extends the wireless range perfectly. Don't believe what it says on the box about needing a Linksys wireless router to connect to; that's only for auto configuration. Manual configuration is dead simple. You can use as many as you like to cover dead spots in and around the house. In use, the Boom signal strength is 98% (more than when its on the indoor wireless network) and passes all the network test speeds. Even at 5000 I get an average throughput of 97%. These are the same figures I get when the Boom is on the wireless router so there is no down side at all with the repeater. -- Mick Seymour Mick Seymour's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21137 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I don't understand this and I'm not able to reproduce it: 1. The mixer message is a message that the "context menu" command did not succeed, there's only one way in iPeng to issue that command: go to the "m" mode (it's the equivalent for "i" in albums, artists, genres etc. views) and then to a "hold" gesture on an item or click the cover for an album. It should never appear in a list showing tracks (and the "i" icon). In the "i" mode, you should indeed get the menu you describe above that let's you play a single track. On menus showing tracks, all other modes will also produce that menu when any one of the other modes is active and you do a "hold" gesture. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62245 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] why is the sb3 remote SO unreliable?
Have you tried to ping Squeezenetwork ? You could have a latency problem even if your internet is fast. They are some kinds of internet that simply do not work for this reason, often these bizarre satellite kind of isp. Example I can ping the US SqueezeNetwork with circa 200ms from Sweden and the German SN server with 50-60ms as a benchmark. You should be aware of that every button press on the IR remote is relayed to SN and SN is then following that command and does what you want, change tune alter brightness, volume, changing menues and so. The SB3 is realy a slim device even the things you see on the screen is drawed by SN (or your local SC ). -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
