Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2009-11-03 Thread andrek

Question: Does Album Catalogue Creator (RC5+) create a trustworthy
output?

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

Another small issue I found.
I have some very long tracks on some of my albums.
Tracks longer than 1 hour are not listed correctly by ACC (v1.5b).

Example:
Klaus Schulze - The Dome Event has 2 tracks. ACC lists them as:
01 - The Dome Event (3:32) = but correct length is 1:03:32
02 - After Eleven (10:44)= correct

Nothing dramatic, but it would be nice to fix in a next release (if
easy).

Re: [slim] update firmware without remote

2009-11-03 Thread toby10

There is a way to setup the SB3 to Auto Update (no remote needed) but
ironically this requires a remote to select this setting.
Any chance of borrowing a JVC DVD player remote one time to do so?
Or borrowing a universal remote with a JVC DVD code input?
Other than that I think you are out of luck.

Another option is to crack open your SB3 remote and look for a loose
solder connection at the eye emitter, a very common and simple fix.

[slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread hungarianhc

Hi All,

So I LOVE my new Squeezebox setup in my apartment. I have a couple
Squeezebox Radios, and i'm just totally in love with these things. I'm
upgrading my home server to a SheevaPlug next week, and I'm pretty
excited to set this thing up :-).

In any case, I'd like to set my parents up with a Squeezebox setup this
Christmas, but I'm not sure which device is best for them. As of now,
they have a stereo system with speakers all over the house. The speaker
wire is actually run throughout the house and it all comes in once
central spot. In that spot, they currently have an Audio receiver hooked
up to a CD player. The receiver then outputs to a speaker terminal,
basically a hub, where all the speakers are connected to. You can push
the buttons on the hub to turn the speakers on / off throughout the
house. What's the best way to integrate squeezebox products into the
current setup? Thanks!

[slim] A Radio is supposed to play music, not silence...

2009-11-03 Thread spyhunter

Why is the top feature of this Internet Radio not the ability to
reconnect to an internet radio station when the internet signal drops in
speed or hiccups? Who wants to listen to silence? Did the designers
expect everybody to have screaming fast broadband?

I have to press play on this thing 20 times a day because our broadband
is at best 100K over here in the middle east. The least they could do
is have some kind of a timeout option on this thing, or better yet
reconnect as soon as a signal is detected, how hard is that, this is one
of those why oh why questions!?!

They spend so much time and effort on other things like redesigning
their website (which looks good, but doesn't function for crap with
music on-demand services) when they should have had this feature from
the get go...

[slim] Rhapsody and Napster web remote frustration...

2009-11-03 Thread spyhunter

I believe this started when the website was redesigned recently, but
when you want to play an entire album with these services via the
website remote control, the squeezebox refuses to do so. So you are
stuck with playing individual tracks that will repeat themselves. I
could make a playlist, however I believe that option is moot because
most of the time when you play an individual track with these services,
it will play the wrong track, it is usually one track above or below
that it confuses it with, but sometimes it's way off. So you can add a
track to your favorites and it will have the wrong name, or it will be
the right name, but it's not the track that you added to your
favorites.

It's a complete cluster you know what, why in the world haven't they
fixed this yet!?! Who would pay a monthly fee for this crap?!? They
must have noticed their sales being way down??

Do her (and yourself) a favor and use a Classic instead.
You need the controller or Net::UDAP to set up the receiver and that's
not for non-techies.
Plus the display is nice and you can currently get a Classic at almost

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread JeffHart

The easiest way would be go with either a Duet (Receiver), Classic or
Touch connected to the reciever AUX inputs and then control the speakers
from the central location.

Otherwise you'd need to place Receivers, Booms, Classics, Touch's or
Radios every where you want music. The Boom and Radio are self
contained, you'd need amps or powered speakers to accompany the others.
You might put a switch in the rooms to allow you to switch from the
central receiver to the local amp using the existing speakers.

If they don't have a server or NAS available, I'd recommend starting
with the Touch when it's available and use an external USB drive for the
library. If they don't have a centralized remote solution, you might
consider the Controller. Then you or they can expand the system.

Make your radio station a favourite, then start playing that favourite.

Add the favourite again to the end of the playlist (so that the

Set the player to repeat playlist.

When your 'broadband' drops, that player should just keep cycling
around the two items picking up the stream when it can.

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2009-11-03 Thread Locuth

Hello guys

SlimControl 1.0 beta is online and ready for you.
Be kind if you discover any bugs - I'll fix them.

As to the usability - I'd like to give three important hints:

1. Whenever you are in a list (players, current playlist, albums,
etc.)
Swipe-right on the list to go 'back', if applicable.

2. The player-list can be closed by swiping-right (as there is no
'back' really^^)
Cklicking anywhere outside the list closes it too.

3. The current playlist (now playing screen) displays 30 items at a
time.
You can navigate back and forth by swiping-right/left. The two somewhat
ugly arrow-buttons at the bottom do the same.
Cklicking anywhere outside the list closes it.

Oh, and a 4th hint.
The current playlist has context-menu that you access via taphold.

=== Edit ===
To those of you who haven't worked with/registered version 0.98:
You have to re-register. However the registration requires no more
emailing.
Instead you'll get a key right from the online registration form that
opens in your browser.
Copy paste that into the key-field in SlimControl.

You open the online registration form by clicking on the blue hyperlink
in the SControl registration dialog.

I am humbly awaiting your feedback.
Cheers
Sebastian

be done with iPeng. You can also use the net udap tool, but it's not
very user friendly. If you're comfortable with nerdy computer stuff

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-03 Thread Locuth

Hello guys

SlimControl 1.0 beta is online and ready for you.
Be kind if you discover any bugs - I'll fix them.

As to the usability - I'd like to give three important hints:

1. Whenever you are in a list (players, current playlist, albums, etc.)

I am humbly awaiting your feedback.
Cheers
Sebastian

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread hungarianhc

There's wifi throughout the entire house... How about this...

My mom is going to get an iPod Touch from my dad for Christmas. I love
iPeng, and I'm sure she could get used to that interface. Could I just
get a squeezebox duet receiver for her w/ iPeng? There's an iMac
upstairs with all of her music. She'd be happy to install squeezecenter
on there - i don't think they yet need a nas / server (although i love
mine!).

I see I can get one of these for like $150 after shipping. I think this
would be a good way to dip the toes in without plunking a huge
investment down.

Re: [slim] Scan Terminated Unexpectedly - MySQL Error

2009-11-03 Thread snarlydwarf

In addition to convincing AV software to leave MYD/MYI files out of the
scan, you may also need to convince it to leave
C:\ProgramData\Squeezebox\Cache\MySQL or whatever the directory MySQL
shoves stuff in on Windows out of the scan.

From comments on various MySQL mailing lists some AV software triggers
on updates of that directory (ie, when a file is added or modified) and
decides to lock the directory from access while it thinks about it.

Re: [slim] Phone support

2009-11-03 Thread chinaski

Thanks. I managed to resolve the connectivity issue on my own with a bit
of persistence. I had to get the controller to do a factory reset, which
proved tricky in this case, but once it reset I was in business.

The phone issue with support was completely weird. I was impressed that
I got a real human on the line on a Saturday, but was frustrated because
neither of us could make out half of what the other was saying. Having
tried this on multiple phones, carriers, and locations and getting the
same result each time leads me to the conclusion that the fault lay with
logitech.

Anyway, thanks for weighing in...

[slim] Sumoh TinyAmp S30

2009-11-03 Thread robert6920

Thanks to the combined efforts of Post Danmark and An Post, I am now
listening to Smooth Jazz on my SR via a wonderful little Sumoh TinyAmp
S30. I am currently trying it on an SR in the study, playing though an
old pair of Morduant Short speakers (previously driven by an old NAD
C320) prior to final installation in the bedroom with some Proficient
C610 speakers. So far, I am very impressed. The TinyAmp has power
outputs at both 9v and 5v (for the Classic), is connected by S/PDIF and
is an absolute doddle to set up - true plug and play. It came with
everything you'd need: Mains cable (continental plug) dc power cable for
Classic, and two for the Receiver (0.18m and 0.45m) S/PDIF cables (0.22m
and 0.5m) banana connectors.

It's a very neat looking amplifier, too

Had to contact them directly by email (they're not selling on the web
yet) paid by euro bank transfer (free and painless) and my dealings with
them have been entirely satisfactory.

Are you sure it is not stopping when playing tracks - check the process

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread Ikabob

I think that your parents would love having their very nice stereo
system hooked up with the Touch (when it comes out). I know that there
will be some new bugs with it but they will be ironed out in time , I am
sure. I have a similar setup as you described for your parents and I
love the fact that my stereo can blast music to all parts of our
home...even though each room cannot be individually volume controlled. I
use the itouch with ipeng as a remote controller and I find that it
really works well. So, I vote for the Touch for your parents...if you
can wait.

I actually have the SB3 and I am eagerly awaiting the Touch for another
area of our upstairs. The only problem I have with my system as it
stands (SB3,Radio,Boom), is the sync on MSB.com is inconsistent. At
times it is right on and then at other times it is not right on. But
that is off the subject. I love the system.

I'm still using version 7.3.3. It seems thet 7.4 is not that stable at
the moment.
As for the ARTISTSORT, it's quite simple. I extended the SELECT
statement of the base sql query:

sql = Create table ACC _
SELECT DISTINCT _
CONVERT(album_artist.name USING UTF8) AS 'AlbumArtist', _
new= album_artist.namesort AS AlbumArtistSort, _
...

Later in function fnCreateSQLQuery I replaced the AlbumArtist with
AlbumArtistSort:

sQOrderBy = order by AlbumArtistSort,AlbumYear
DESC,AlbumName,Disc,Tracknum;

Of course, you have to change the other ORDER statements, too (I didn't
use them).
BTW, if you set the squeezecenter option to ignore leading articles
(The, Der, Die, Das, Le, La,...) you don't need the option in ACC,
because in the database table the artists are stored without articles in
the namesort field.

[slim] Delays in e-mail support response time

2009-11-03 Thread Devans

Please accept my apologies to anyone who has suffered long delays lately
after contacting Logitech Support via e-mail. We've been going through
some transitions within our support organization and have run into
unexpected problems resulting in a poor customer experience.

See this note from Pat Brubeck, our VP of WorldwIde Quality and
Customer Care...

What is Going On? – An Insider’s View

As many of you have noticed, we've been having some real challenges
providing our normal levels of customer service during the past few
weeks. We've had unexpectedly long call-waiting times, as well as issues
with both the availability and the response time of our e-mail system.
We have also been experiencing some startup issues with our new Customer
 Care Web site.

As a Logitech customer, this is not the support experience you deserve.
As the vice president of Customer Care, I want to personally apologize
 for our recent poor service.

How did we get here? As we continued to grow and add more product
lines, it became clear that we had to make some fundamental changes in
our Customer Care operations. This decision required us to develop new
processes, implement new systems and to engage with new partners.
Unfortunately, as recent events have demonstrated, this transition has
not been as seamless as we had hoped.

We understand how frustrating this is, but we need to ask for your
continued patience. We know there are still issues with call times,
e-mail responses and the new Web site. We are working around the clock
to add support capacity and resolve the remaining technical issues as
 fast as we can.

 Pat Brubeck
 Vice President,
 WorldwIde Quality and Customer Care

We are working diligently to correct these issues and return to the
response times that our customers expect.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread epoch1970

I won't ask about the age of your parents. But it looks that their setup
is reliable.
I suggest a reliable server, this means either the Touch (fingers
crossed !) or something like a SheevaPlug. Low power, single purpose,
always-on, that will give them excellent quality of service and no
second thoughts about wasting electricity.

Unless you can hijack the audio switch, or you can add
remote-controlled on/off switches in the rooms, and have all this
controlled by a plugin, I would suggest the Boom. (I hear the Radio
sounds great, and it can operate on batteries, but I fear its small
screen.)

I love my Boom, and my parents love their, more than the SB Classic
they have also.
The Boom can add *great sound* to any room where there is no audio yet.
And better, it will sync with the main system.

(For the Boom, I recommend considering using PeterW's 'contextmenu' and
'saverswitcher' plugins. Out of the box, this combination allows to use
the big knob to control volume after briefly pressing it. Press again
and you go back to menu navigation mode. I think this is known as
grandma mode, here and there.)
