Re: [slim] hung up on Connecting in China

2009-11-27 Thread robchel

Quick update - my old SB3 mysteriously started connecting to
SqueezeNetwork both directly and via the server software about a week
ago. Have no idea why after almost 3 months it came alive, but I'm not
questioning it. Also the network seems more stable on my Boom as well.
Maybe someone at Squeeze tunneled under the Great Fire Wall here?

[slim] redirect pc audio stream to play on squeezebox

2009-11-27 Thread rvdb

Dear All,

i control my squeezebox in the living room more often from my laptop
and the www interface then using the duet's remote control (i'm working
at the laptop often). The music then plays over my home stereo set.

Now and then i play something from the web (e.g. YouTube) and then the
sound is very low quality coming from my laptop speakers.

Is it possible to "redirect" the audio stream such that it will be
played by the squeezebox? Would that be possible somehow?

I'm using Linux Ubuntu.

Regards
Rein

[slim] Policies are getting interesting.. What Next?

2009-11-27 Thread DaveWr

At one time the Slim Devices group concentrated on being the most
effective route to play a digital music library connection. I am a
little worried with recent developments.

The third party developers seem restless, issues of support and
commitment from Logitech management - some seem to be giving up there
involvement. As a music player it was Erland who got effective random
plying to work, Triode to get Alien BBC and Pippin to create the best
remote control (IMHO). Server Power Control from GHarris addressed the
Server power issue most comprehensively.

We used to have a party mode (albeit declared as beta). Now in the
Duet forum it is declared DEAD by the QA function in Logitech and the
thread is CLOSED. No debate.

Instead we get apps with Flicker and Facebook. Where is the focus, is
this product suite for playing music effectively or is it a lifestyle
system? If the latter when can we expect the video squeezebox or the
camera controller!

I understand it must be difficult for Logitech to handle this type of
forum environment, but it exists, it is part of what they bought, and it
handles most of the usage cases where incomplete documentation leads to
confusion by users. In the past it also, through the eager development
community, it made useful music related features available and supported
to the whole user community.

Where are we going? Is it time to reconsider investments in streaming
products.

Dave

The goto start restarts squeezeslave if it exits or crashes.

The sleep 10 just waits 10 seconds before restarting, that way if ss is
continuously crashing, I can control-c to exit the loop.

The computer sleeping will not be fixed by the above, it looks like
there's a problem with squeezeslave recovering from sleep, still looking
into that issue.

Re: [slim] Does MusicIP still exist in latest 7.5 nightlies?

2009-11-27 Thread ModelCitizen

Thanks Wirrunna and bobertuk,
I am reluctant to make many changes to MusicIP without guidance. The
last thing I want to do is to have to rescan my music collection. This
took well over a month the first time I did it.

In the end I cured the problem, albeit temporarily, by selecting all my
music files and removing them from the library, saving the library cache
and then adding the files back. A SBS clear and rescan then saw all my
MusicIP icons exactly where they should have been and MusicIP working
correctly.

Then I made the mistake of rebooting my computer. Now MusicIP has
disappeared entirely from SBS. I don't even have the erroneous M icons
on playlists. :-(

BTW. It seems that my default.m3lib resides in my Windows MIP program
directory and not Docs and Settings. I'm not too sure why.

And the MIP gui now lists a reasonable number of files without MIP
tags. However, when I look at the files in a tag editing program it can
be seen that the MIP tags do exist. :-(

Re: [slim] Does MusicIP still exist in latest 7.5 nightlies?

2009-11-27 Thread bobertuk

If MIP is set in preferences to 'Archive analysis...' and the music file
tags really do contain the fingerprint, rebuilding the database from
scratch should be quick. There is no need to re-analyse the files - MIP
will just take the data direct from the tags. Worth experimenting with a
few files perhaps?

I have found occasionally that MIP doesn't write the analysis to the
tag though and have to redo those files. I usually do this by deleting
the individual files from MIP then re-adding them - that seems to work.
Oddly when it happens, it's always with track 6!

[slim] WDS + Mac Filtering problem

2009-11-27 Thread Squid

I discussed this already in another thread but guess I may have more
success if it's in its own proper thread.

I have a WDS setup at home. The Master router is connected to a small
LAN which has my Squeezebox Server connected as well. My Squeezebox is
closest to this router, so I would like to force it to connect to this
router. A method that supposedly works is to use Mac Filtering on the
other router to deny the Squeezebox access to that router.
For some reason this doesn't work. The Squeezebox insists on connecting
to the Slave, where the connection is denied and the Squeezebox then
acts as if it can't connect anywhere (i.e. blank screen) without trying
the Master. The only way I can get the Squeezebox to connect to the
Master is by powering off the Slave router, then the Squeezebox finds
the Master and connects to it. If I then power up the Slave router
again, I would notice after a few days that the Squeezebox went blank
again because it tried to connect to the Slave again.
Is anyone else having this problem ? Why doesn't the Squeezebox just
try the Master if the Slave doesn't work ? Or is the fact that both have
the same SSID (WDS requirement) cause the problem ?

The weird thing is that in the past I had a setup where I wanted my
Squeezebox to always connect to the Slave, and so I used a MAC Filter on
the Master. This has always worked.

Re: [slim] Does MusicIP still exist in latest 7.5 nightlies?

2009-11-27 Thread Wirrunna

mc and bobertuk, you can list tracks that don't have their analysis
archived by creating a new filter - in the MIP gui, right click in the
Filters/Playlist column, select New Filter, then in the box select
'Stored Analysis' from the first drop down list, select 'is missing'
from the second drop down list, click Add Condition, select 'Status'
then 'is' and enter "Analyzed" and click OK. This will list tracks that
are analyzed but not archived.
You can archive the analysis by selecting the tracks then right click
and select 'Archive Analysis (modifies files)'.

mc, the location of default.m3lib moved at some stage to enable
multiple libraries, i.e. each user could have their own default.m3lib

this one (still unmodified) was read by SC.

So I removed these redundant infos.

[slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-27 Thread bigbwb

Hello all,

I bought my wife the new imac for Christmas and will be retiring the
old Dell PC. Currently I have the SB3 running SC on the PC. I have
grown a custom to using Media Monkey to edit and create playlists and
etc for my SB player. Once I switch over to the mac, what are my best
options?

Some basics from my setup:
I have many FLAC files and the rest are mp3's.
80GB worth roughly.

So my specific questions are this:
How can I get my FLAC files to work(I am very new to apple and no
novice with a pc either).

Are there similar programs to MM for a mac? I can utilize parallels to
run Windows & the Mac OS simultaneously if need be too. I hate itunes
and would prefer not to use it for playlists and etc for Squeezecenter.

Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't recommend Archive Analysis (or writing anything to tags from MIP) -
it can cause some tag data to be lost. eg. if you store multiple artist tags,
MIP will only read the first one, then when it writes the archive analysis
tags, it stores all data that it read, but as it didn't read the extra artists,
it doesn't write them back.

[slim] Play system sounds and stream music?

2009-11-27 Thread jk12

I don't have any squeezebox device but am considering purchase. I need
to be able to play any windows OS sounds at all times---in addition to
streaming mp3 files.

I have a windows home server which contains all music files. I'd like
to stream the music files AND hear any system sounds at the same time.
So, for example, if I get new email, my server will sound an alert. I
need to hear that alert over all my squeezebox devices. And, should i
start playing an mp3, I still need to ALSO hear the system sounds over
the squeezebox.

Is this possible? I noticed a waveInput plugin which seems it might do
the job. But, I don't have the squeezebox software or hardware to test
and confirm.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you...

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2009-11-27 Thread lbryanray

Any one have some ideas? Thanks much! -Neal

I was able to get properly connected without the controller by
interacting with Logitech support. They apparently fixed the database
entries on their end and now all is working fine for me.

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-27 Thread exile

welcome to the world of apple- computers for people who have much higher
standards, expectations and sadly, price points.

seriously though, your life will most definitely improve by working on
a mac. However, the world of squeezebox is heavily skewed towards pc.
and i know of nothing in the mac world that is the equivalent of media
monkey. the best that i can recommend is the sbooth family of programs.

their link: http://sbooth.org/

there you will find tag, play and max. three programs that should cover
all of your music ripping, tagging and metadata changing needs.

good luck and may you never have to open a microsoft program or
internet explorer ever again.

I confess that, despite being about as fervent a Machead as you can
find, that I use dbpoweramp (running in a WinXP virtual machine) to do
my ripping and initial tagging. I'm eagerly awaiting Steve Booth's Rip
application to get out of beta, but even then it won't have the multiple
metadata sources that the registered version of dbpoweramp has. I don't
know if it will do multiple conversions and compute track and album
gains either; my dbpoweramp chain spits out FLAC and m4a simultaneously,
with ReplayGain computations to boot.

I don't know of any ways to make playlists for SBServer on the Mac
outside of SBServer (unless you use Itunes integration, which I don't
for other reasons). Maybe somebody else does...

That's not really fair - the problem is that up until now no-one has
made a decent mac ripper/tagger/manager because of the dominance of
iTunes. It's not Logitech's fault that Apple won't support AccurateRip
or FLAC.

Having said that, I'm glad to see Rip and Max are finally filling the
gap!

I was wondering about @exile's claim. I haven't run Windows associated
with my SqueezeBoxen for many years. My SBS server has never been a
Windows box. (Not Mac either, I speak Linux) and even my primary web
browser to talk to the SBS pages are from Linux.

Rather than being skewed towards the Windows world, one of the prime
attractions, and the main thrust of SBS server and usage models is not
being tied to Windows.

If you are talking about ripping utilities, sure, Accurip is
Windows-only, but that is (1) not required and (2) even if you like it,
its only used during the first minutes of when you get a new CD.

I've never looked at iTunes, but I do understand that it is wildly
popular despite a lot of known flaws.

To the OP, have you considered just keeping your now old and obsolete PC
and using it as the SqueezeBoxServer? Either with Windows or with Linux?

There is nothing that says your server has to be the same OS as what you
use on a daily basis.

Re: [slim] Help/Sad - SB3 just "bricked"

2009-11-27 Thread Ossian

About two month ago I had my Squeezebox2 fail on me after years of
operating without a problem.
One day the Squeezebox would not turn on, similar to the description in
this forum post. I could see that the device was getting power since
the red LED was emitting from the optical audio port.
After searching the net for possible solutions to what might have
happened (I thought the display might have gone bad), I came across a
post suggesting that the WiFi card might be bad. After removing the
Wifi card sure enough the Squeezebox display came back to life and I was
able to communicate with it over a wired Ethernet connection.
The WiFi card used in my Squeezebox2 was a PCI style WiFi card with an
Atheros AR5213A chip. In looking for a replacement I searched for
possible compatible solutions.
The best solution that I found regularly available on ebay for about
$12 (card and S/H) that appear to be 100% compatible with the Squeezebox
is a "Samsung AR5004G AR5213A Wireless Wifi PCI BG card" available from
accessory4you. The card that I needed to replace was a NL-3054MP PLUS
ARIES2, the Samsung card even has the antenna connections in the same
location, so the replacement/repair is a snap.
So far so good the Squeezebox is back up and running with WiFi. The
important thing to note is the Atheros baseband IC AR5213A, if you have
the chip and are experiencing similar problems chances are that the
above-mentioned solution will work for you, and the nice thing is that
the repair is easy and won't break the bank.
Good luck for anyone experiencing a similar problem,
Ossian

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-27 Thread exile

my reason for stating that the squeezebox has been skewed towards the pc
is based on music editing programs such as media monkey that are
predominantly pc only in develoment and the number of plugins over the
years that were built only for the windows environment (i.e.-moose).

but I would say too that to operate your server on a platform other
than what you use everyday for your normal computing seems needlessly
inconvenient.

also, are you actually serious pat that you've never even taken itunes
for a test drive? that's quite precious of you if it's true.

Most people on this planet who use computers, and most in the Logitech
target market (North America, Europe, Pacific Rim, etc.) use Windows.
Most developers use Windows.

But I reject your claim that the SqueezeBox is biased towards Windows. I
specifically selected it, way back when I bought my first SB-1, because
it was not biased towards Windows, and all the rest were.

You are entitled to your opinion, but servers have different needs. My
first SlimDevices server went over 18 months without being touched, and
without a reboot. That is rare if not unheard of for either OS-X or Windows.

Right now, I'm beta testing 7.5 and while the server is fairly stable,
I'm not getting the months of constant service that I used to when I ran
production slimserver/squeezecenter/squeezeboxserver

> also, are you actually serious pat that you've never even taken itunes

Yes. Never touched iTunes. It has zero appeal to me. First, it requires
an operating system that I chose to not use. I will use Windows if
someone pays me to, and as a professional developer, sometimes I am paid
to do so. Been doing it since Windows/386 2.11 was current. Use o my
Squeezeboxen, from SB1 to Duet to Transporter to Boom and Radio, is not
something I do when being paid for professional development.

Second, for ages, it was all DRM'd lossy music. I care neither for DRM'd
anything, and I don't bother with lossy compressed music. All of my 856
albums with 10444 songs by 530 artists are flac.

Once you have used a dozen or so operating systems, as I have, going
from one to the next is really not that big of a deal. Sure, the
commands are different, but the concepts are universal.

I was perusing the Rip / Max / Play etc site, and it appears that Rip
does support ReplayGain, both track gain and album gain. Not sure if
you can adjust the target value or not as you can with dbpoweramp. Max
can handle conversions to different formats. Maybe I should look into
these tools again...

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-27 Thread davep

For ripping and tagging on the Mac you might want to look at
XLDhttp://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html. This usually does
the trick for me in both flac and mp3 formats on the same ripping pass.
Tags are pulled from CDDB and you get the chance to fix them before
committing. If you subsequently find you need to redo any tags then
"Tag" from the aforementioned Stephen Booth (http://sbooth.org/Tag/)
works well.

As for playlists I have had some success using VLC
(http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html) which allows you to
drag and drop files from the Finder to form a playlist which can then be
saved as an m3u file in your designated Squeezebox Server folder. A
quick playlist rescan and you'll find the list available for use.
