SC/SBS7 advantages over MySB.com for Internet Radio and Music Services usage: + SC can use Music Information Screen (for legacy players like SB3 Boom, newer LCD based players cannot use this) + SC offers immediate access to your local music library + SC includes Favorites folders and sub-folders for station favorites, all editable and movable (MySB has no folders) + SC has much more player screen configuration customizing + SC has a larger and more configurable UI + SC has MUCH better Playlist configuration, control, editing, saving, use multiple playlists (MySB Playlist control limited to SB player, no UI interface for Playlist, only one Playlist instance, Playlist lost on disconnect) + SC has a better menu layout for Internet Radio + SC has logging for stream error diagnosis (MySB has no logging) + SC has better player sync (MySB can have lag and drift, and has limited sync options) + SC can sync most Music Services to multiple players (MySB cant use multiple players for some Music Services) + SC has Direct tune in URL via web UI (MySB requires this be done by creating and saving as a Favorite before tuning) + SC allows for third party plugins (not available on MySB) + SC offers much simpler MySB player registration (simple connect new player to SC and it is registered onto MySB) + SC can do Proxy streaming (MySB cannot) + no FW update conflicts switching between SC and MySB Obviously MySBs big advantage over SC/SBS is not needing your computer turned on (or even needing a computer at all). -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] 3 Artist albums classed as compilations?
Are you positive that the compilation tag is not set = 1 in one of your tags. Open in MP3TAG, right click and select 'extended tags'. If it shows a compilation field, just delete that field for these files. by the way, any reason to have 3 different tags within one filethis often leads to confusion when the multiple tags are not each updated with changes, etc. Many odd tagging problems reported here are eventually solved with the discovery of multiple tags containing conflicting data. You may have your reasons, but in general you are better off with ID3v2.3 tags only for your mp3 files and vorbis comments (flac tags) for FLAC, etc. You can easily set the options in mp3tag to read any tag type, but only keep/write ID3v2.3. Then you can simply load up your files, select them all, hit the big red X at the top of the menu bar (delete tags), then immediately select EDIT / undo remove tag. This will remove all tags then only write the type of tag you want back. Obviously test this on a few files first to make sure you see how it works before you do this to 1000s of files at once. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74393 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] still no presentation-layer dedupe of albums
I would ask the question how does the system know that the multiple sets are different except for the bit-rate or encoding? There are lots of things that seem obvious but that when you try to code them become absolutely horrendous. Bearing in mind the SC deals in tracks and it is the tags and disk structure that allow it to 'understand' albums. So if you have the same track in two different directories with identical tags but encoded differently (different bit rates or codec) are they the same track musically or are they different but just happen to have the same tags. Whilst you might say that that could never happen then consider that there are no official tags for any track just what you put on there yourself, perhaps with the help of an online source. So any user might choose to accidentally make identical tags. Also consider a scenario where an album is updated, perhaps with remix, but is otherwise identical to the old one then it might get identical tags. What happens if you have different album art in the two directories, does this make the two tracks different? What about if in one directory you have an additional track does that make the two original tracks different? Now one can easily say of course it does to any of the questions but can everyone say the same thing. One only looks at it from the point of view of one's only library. Whilst it might be possible to do complex analysis of the tracks to try to guess if they are similar musically you have two problems, one of speed and processing power and secondly which one does it choose to display and play. I can envisage situations where two tracks are determined to be identical but aren't and you can't every get one of them to play. I seem to recall this has been discussed before and one solution was that if two identically tagged tracks (differing only by codec/bit-rate) are in the same directory then they could be considered to be the same track thus allowing the system to choose the most appropriate to play to a given device. Though I'm sure that there are some ripping/management apps that might un-intentially create that situation for different tracks. However, that wouldn't work in the OP's situation because he wishes to maintain an existing directory structure. In the OP's case perhaps he should look at the custom library plugins then create some bespoke tags in the files. The the individual devices can look at a tailored bespoke library. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74288 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Although you should also look for the field ITUNESCOMPILATION as some programs write to that field (even programs other than itunes). Even though you use tag and rename, you might download mp3tag and install. It is a very powerful program recommended by many here and other digital music forums (particularly for detective work on tag issues). I've found that it allows me to figure out problems in tags better than other programs I've tried. It is easy to use on the surface but if you find you like it, there are powerful things buried underneath the hood. And nothing to keep you from using tagrename as well. p.s. not sure about the other tags being blank.I don't know if the tagrename program is showing you that the tags don't exist or that the fields are blank. Re: [slim] 3 Artist albums classed as compilations?
SqueezeeBox recognizes my compilation (AKA various artists) albums without there being a compilation tag at all. I also have albums that have a number of artists, but that are not considered to be compilations. The difference? The ones that are not have the same AlbumArtist. This is great for me as I have a number of albums in which a particular artist only performs on a couple of tracks - and I'd like those tracks to appear when I look for music by that artist. So... maybe add an AlbumArtist field to the albums that are being incorrectly recognized as compilations. I'm not sure what ID3 tag that would be (I'm all FLAC, which is Vorbis tags). I'd also second the MP3Tag recommendation. And, as an idle thought, you might also create a compilation tag and set it to 0. But again, I don't use compilation tags at all - and the system works as it should. -- bobkoure bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74393 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

(if the original poster is interested, search this forum on compilation and you'll find more than you ever wanted to know about compilation tagging! Re: [slim] still no presentation-layer dedupe of albums
So maybe the answer is to move the encoding and bitrate into the tags, either as a separate tags or maybe just as one of the multiple genres. If you've got everything sorted into directory trees, you could just use an MP3Tags action to either add a tag (stupidly easy) or to add a genre (slightly more difficult - look at format values). If you can't add tags, then, as previously mentioned (I think) look at multiple library support - control which folder trees are in which library by manipulating shortcuts/links. As far as not understanding why you have this issue, well, you're way out under that long tail... -- bobkoure bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74288 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hi Ralphy- I tried deleting that line of code and rebuilding but the error persists. Very strange indeed. At one point I was receiving FLAC decoding errors in the terminal window while streaming tunes through iPeng which is funny since none of my music is in FLAC format. The major issue, in the end, was bouncing from track to track on iPeng - it would consistently crash / hang the squeezeslave app. Downgrading the Squeezeserver to v. 7.3.4 seems to have remedied the issue. I bought a new router because I thought that was the problem(now I use DLINK DIR 635). It hasn't changed much. I don't understand what's wrong since it most of the time streams perfect. Re: [slim] still no presentation-layer dedupe of albums
i think you guys are making this entirely too complicated... this is an album level, not a track level, function. the only comparison i care about is at the album level. i'll take whatever art and individual track versions exist with the album that is selected. i require retention of browse music folder, yes.. that is how some people get access to the collections that they have put together and understand the structure of. the higher level browses searches though should only select the more information dense / more complete version of an album. for example, the following query does 95% of what is required: select C2.id, C2.title, C2.contributor, C2.year, SUM(tracks.filesize) FROM albums as C1, albums as C2 JOIN tracks WHERE C1.title = C2.title AND C1.contributor = C2.contributor AND (c1.year = c2.year OR c1.year = 0 OR c2.year = 0) AND C1.id C2.id AND tracks.album = c2.id group by tracks.album order by title; i'm not talking about eliminating piddly differences in the tags. if someone wants to build independent heuristics for that, it would certainly be cool to allow them to build comparison regexps or something, but thats not the point here. my collections are meticulously organized and the tags normalized. as demonstrated in that query, we're just looking at albums which have the same title, artist, year, and then adding up all of the filesizes within that album, and ultimately (although this step is not in the query above) selecting the largest response per similar album, and perhaps tagging the rest with a new schema boolean hideThis. i agree that normalization and correction of tags is an external problem. but if they are already corrected, and i have two versions of the same album, i want only the best copy, as defined by a very simple and inexpensive heuristic which can be applied to existing tags, i want only one response to my searches and browses. clear now? -- chroma chroma's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22010 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74288 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] still no presentation-layer dedupe of albums
say you have a collective living situation. common recreation areas and sound systems. squeezeboxes in each of them. people come in with their own collections of stuff. there is a fair amount of overlap because they have similar taste. each collection is very well groomed on its own. the collection drives are added to the common server / NAS. under normal circumstances, we want to search and browse across all collections. but many dupes occur. in individuals own spaces, they can run multilibrary or itunes or whatever they want across their own root directory on the NAS. (most people still choose to buy their own squeezeboxes or run a software client and run across the entire library, though, even in their own rooms.) several things occur regularly: - seven+ hits for the same album search. no quick way to determine which one has been ripped at 64k mono vs flac. in the common spaces, where the sound system is of very high quality, the more information-dense version is universally desirable. - multiple hits for the same album search. multiple copies of the same quality. only one is useful. - multiple hits for the same album search. one copy is incomplete or incorrectly tagged. the most complete one is still desirable. - search by artist. have to scroll through 3-10 copies of the (apparently) same result per album name. - search by track name. have to scroll through 3-15 copies of the (apparently) same result per track name. [even in this case, by removing at the album level all but the most information dense version, we get where we want.. a single result from the best album choice] again, i'll certainly agree that the algorithm used for selection may change per individual taste, but as long as it assumes that the data has been externally normalized (which i agree is not slimserver's problem), it should do a reasonable job of making the presentation usable. the only other major selection criterion i can think of which might be more desirable for some people is select album copy with more items. in my case, i've found that total byte count works in almost all cases for accomplishing that as a side-effect. -- chroma chroma's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22010 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74288 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Mike, I'm thrilled to hear your interest. Check our the module we have, which is currently version 0.3.7, on the google code site. It is working pretty well at the moment. Favorites is working (largely thanks to Tom, who recently started helping out), and the module as a whole is a little more reliable than it used to be. I'm thinking the next addition will be multiple player control and sync. It should not be too difficult. Then I'd like to add thumbnails for each item in the browse list, which will enable album cover browsing. Remember that you need not use a touchpanel--an Xpanels on a PC is really great in many ways. I use Xpanels, keypads, and the Commandfusion app for an iPod Touch. Having my module work with keypads, to start a pre-defined playlist, is probably the best feature for me. [slim] Alarm and Sync Groups
Is there a way to force a player to go into off status when not in use? I ask because I am bothered by how the alarms works when players are sync'd -- that is, all sync'd players sound the alarm together, unless they are off. Although I generally like music playback within my house to be sync'd, I don't need everyone getting up at 5am with me. And I don't want to have to remember each night to manually turn off each player. I've read discussions about very complicated solutions with sync groups (establishing new groups, breaking the alarm player out of the group temporarily, etc.) but it seems an easy solution would be to have players switch from standby status (paused or stopped) to off status when not in use. I define not in use as no music playback after some user-defined amount of time -- I wouldn't want my players turning off every time I pause a track. So say after an hour of no playback, the players turn off. Then only the player where the alarm was set will sound in the morning. To get music up and running throughout the house, all I would need to do is turn on the players. So back to my original question: is this currently possible, and I just haven't stumbled upon the setting? -- ajkidle 2x SBR, Boom, Radio, iPeng ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74421 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Album Artist sort
With 7.4.2 as the current beta, 7.5 (either version) should be considered as alpha software, and not intended for consumption by the general public. Andy has said clearly, many times, that people should be testing the embedded branch. Therefore in my opinion all that's needed is to change the beta/alpha download page in the wiki to point to the 7.5-embedded branch instead of pointing to the 7.5.0 trunk (non-embedded branch). One could also add a note stating explicitly that the embedded branch is the one that should be tested. Unfortunately either I don't have editing rights to that page, or I just can't figure out how to edit it. If someone can tell me how, or do it themselves, that would be a public service. As for your questions in the bug report and in the forums about -how do you know what things to merge later?-, the devs seem to trust the version control software they use for SBS development to handle that kind of housekeeping, and I see no reason to doubt that. Thanks for the example, and it does highlight how bugzilla can be clearer about which bugs are resolved for which versions.
