Re: [slim] Improved Squeezebox config availible for Harmony users.

2010-05-12 Thread coolnice

What I'm looking for is just a button with the radiostation name (or
graphic), eg "BBC Radio 4" which triggers a certain SC favourite (eg
no.4) and would emulate 'press and hold 4' on the SB remote)

If there's no easy solution, I guess I can teach the harmony to learn
prolonged number presses for all 9 digits.

[slim] Searching forums with google

2010-05-12 Thread lrossouw

For interest:

Used to searching the forums using google with the site operator as
follows:
http://www.google.com/search?q=squeezebox+site:forums.slimdevices.com&hl=en&rlz=1C1_enIN367HK353&prmdo=1&prmd=s&filter=0

These days the results seem very poor quality. I.e. no detail etc.

Also on the the discussion search this site doesn't feature.

Re: [slim] MusicIP and accented characters in 7.5.1

2010-05-12 Thread treble

Unfortunately the Perl script didn't work with my cygwin installation on
Windows XP. It could find the accented characters but didn't replace
them with their 'equal' part, like é to e.

So I converted my characters in filenames and folders from UTF to ASCII
with MP3Tag using the 'action' feature. For people who want to try as
well, I have attached the 'mta' file so you don't have to recode it
yourself. Drop it in the folder: C:\Documents and
Settings\YOUR_LOGIN_NAME\Application Data\Mp3tag\data\actions. I now
know more then I ever wanted to know about character sets!

There is still some manual clicking needed since 'do with all' or
something like that, doesn't really seem to work. Also, the folder
above the folder with mp3 files doesn't get fixed. So if you have
something like: "Music\Maná\Maná - 2008 - Arde El Cielo\01 - Dejame
Entrar.mp3", the first Maná doesn't get converted to Mana, but the one
in the Album name does. You can easily find those with the Perl script
using cygwin.

The result re: MusicIP? It fixed the problem!!! I can now create
mixes with SqueezeCenter in which songs with accented characters appear
and they even play without complaining!

So in short, if you want to use MusicIP you can not have
'international' characters in the filename or folder, but you can in
the ID tags.

Can you please explain what you mean by using SBS to force a proxy?
This squeezebox stuff is very new to me. and i barely know anything
about proxies to begin with.. I did however increase the buffer to
30secs using the squeezebox remote. And that sadly doesn't help. still
drops.

Also. it seems to have trouble connecting to "mysqueezebox.com" from

2010-05-12 Thread m1abrams

That is a really horrible review. I think the reviewer spent about 5
minutes reading the specs on the box and about another 5 minutes
listening with some ear buds.

What is this comment? I know reviewers try to have some complaint with
a product and the Touch is not perfect but this is not some to ding the
Touch on. Other question I have is why do they have a big Ad for a
reseller of the Touch that is selling it for $100 over list!

"My biggest complaint in the audio department is the Touch's lack of
speakers. Not that I am a big fan of built-in speakers from a fidelity
standpoint, but there is no way to hear this device unless you have
external speakers or headphones attached, yet it seems designed to be
used in kitchens, offices, or on bedside tables."

The server will downsample to 24/48 works very good.

Note the "server" has to be something that can run sox wich is used for
downsampling my 1.2GHz 1gB ram VIA EPIA server can do this.
Every intel atom based computer should work ok to .

Wich means any "real" computer should do this fine, if you run sbs on a
modern quad core machine you would probably never notice.

Thanks much. I just did the same thing and it seems to have worked.
Hopefully in a week I'll have a consistently working remote. I first
called support and they had me call sales, but sales couldn't actually
sell me one, so I was transferred back over to support. Which is
strange, but whatever. I'll just be glad to not be pressing buttons
over and over in frustration. My much older SB1G remote still works
fine, so hopefully this issue, whatever it is, isn't going to end up
affecting all remotes at some point.

Come on Jim. A $300 docking station, that makes no sense. There are so
many cheaper ways to get sound out of an iPod. And if its iTunes one
wants all other the house or tunes from an iPod, one probably already
has all the other stuff and just needs an airport express and a couple

I've seen this before (SBS reporting 127.0.0.1 as a server IP). Try
restarting the server (SBS, not the whole machine) and make sure the

[slim] Weird issue with two compilation albums

2010-05-12 Thread jimwillsher

Hi all

Latest version of software, on Ubuntu 10.04. Clean install.

I have a weird issue with two compilation albums which have seemingly
identical tag structures.

These are the tags for the two albums as viewed in Media Monkey:

http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album1MediaMonkey.jpg
http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album2MediaMonkey.jpg

And this is how they show up in SC:

http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album1SC.jpg
http://www.jimwillsher.co.uk/Temp/Album2SC.jpg

I cannot see how Album1 is being correctly tagged as a compilation but
Album2 is not. Both albums are purely FLAC files.

Is there any guidance on the appropriate tags or MySql entries to
diagniose this?

Many thanks,

Jim

Strange, I'm using WPA/PSK here and that works without problems.

The only issue is that Wifi is deactivated on boot time, i.e. I have to
reactivate it every time when I restart the Joggler. But the credentials
are saved successfully, so I only need to tap on the "Wifi" checkbox to
activate it.

I'm on vacation in (rainy) Tuscany/Italy right now, but I'll try WPA2
when I'm back in Germany.

I suggest you read the thread: the OP brought up the Sonicwall -- it
worked fine at his location, not at the clients, and the clients are
behind a SonicWall.

If you've had the displeasure of using a SonicWall, you would know why
I abhor them.

A sample setup:
client PC's behind a sonic wall
web server outside the sonic (NOT in the 'dmz', the port labelled DMZ
is not a DMZ according to SonicWall support. "Box no do that" is the
direct quote.)

Very simple.

HTTP Posts for me (outside the sonicwall to the web server): I uploaded
20M flv files in a second or two.

HTTP post for people behind the sonic wall of the same files: 2
minutes.

Not exaggerating.

In order to make their life better, we used a second ethernet port on
the web server with a net-10 address so that they could actually post
in a reasonable time by bypassing the Sonic. Of course, that totally
destroys the point of having a fireall when a public facing and highly
visible web server has an ethernet port on the 'secured' network.

Amazingly bad crap.

It was switched out for a Linux box running shorewall, and the
complaints about speed went away. Not only did their access to their
own web server speed up, so did their access to everything on the
'net.

do you have contradictory experience with SonicWall?

>
> some people tend to focus on shifting blame from all things slim, no
> matter what. thats unfortunate, since it doesn't help improve slim.
>

Again, read the first post. I didn't bring up SonicWall: the OP did,
and I expressed my experience with it. We had three of the things,
they all got written off and given away.

What is your experience with SonicWalls?

Now back to the killfile you go.

+1
- Fat players are subject to (un)planned obsolescence and do not serve
the customer right.
- Trying to monkey the touch and feel of a smart phone is an error.
Looks like phones are moving faster, they are "smarter" and cheaper.
The competition for SP devices is an iTouch with a quality dock.
- Use of a non deterministic system on the player is an error. Put less
experienced linux/web/... developers to the task and you just compound
the issue.

(Add to that the impact of such changes to the current user and
developer community.)

What I want to see next:
- A slim device, with tremendous audio quality and ability to drive
amp and devices. Services that make sense, like a high-res audio store,
authorized covers and liner notes, print-on-demand album catalog, and
exclusive access to higher quality radio streams. Color/touch screen is
not mandatory.
- Serious effort put into the server, adding room correction,
MusicIP-like capabilities, merging system actions and playlists, and
last but not least power management. And why not roll an ISO/VM distro,
and qualify a few brand computers?

I really don't know where the SB line is going, but I sure would like
to know where the old team has gone.

2010-05-12 Thread jimwillsher

Many thanks Phil. I wondered that too, so I'd stripped out the MP3 tags
using MediaMonkey.

However I think I've sussed it - there's a non-standard FLAC tag called
COMPILATION, which MediaMonkey doesn't show. I've found a utility which
does show it and that's the difference between the albums. I've
rescanned, and that seems to fix it.

To break it down:

1. how do I permentantly delete the option to have "zapped playlists".
I dont ever want to see zapped lists ever again

2. Why does my slimserver SC get stuck with only zapped showing at boot

Re: [slim] What product you'd like to see next

2010-05-12 Thread Mnyb

SqueezePlay has bigger problems than a rigid UI .

It may sound contra intuitive, but this "fat" players are slowing the
whole system down for various reason , mainly that the players do to
much "thinking" by them-self and the server sits there waiting.

And the use of a scripting language on a memory and cpu starved
platform ?
Should it not at least be some kind of assembler code or compiled code
?

The slim devices has an edge when driven by a local server they are
much more efficient.

Hopefully the customize squeezeplay UI bug is kept alive, there are
some good ideas there.

I would like to turn of images for the playlist's on SqueePlay the NP
screen can show it and album and artist views, but having to sit and
wait for a controller to cache hundreds of tiny images for a playlist
?
it's enough with one on the NP screen.

So a wish for a more efficient and customizable squeeplay in the
future.
It can be improved/changed, there is wast differences between SP as
seen on the first controllers and what we have now regardless of which
version you prefer it can be changed.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox randomly drops station

2010-05-12 Thread MrSinatra

well, like i said earlier, its interesting to me that all the focus was
being put on the sonicwall, when you can listen to the same stream on
winamp just fine.

some people tend to focus on shifting blame from all things slim, no
matter what. thats unfortunate, since it doesn't help improve slim.

still, that does not mean that it isn't possible that there may be
something about your setup that somehow, for some reason, adversely
affects slim and not winamp, and you should try to eliminate any such
possibilities, and its not unreasonable for others to try to help you
do that.

but when doing so, one should keep an open mind that its not only
possible, but probable the problem does in fact, lie with slim.

so anyway, have you tried setting up SBS behind the sonicwall and
forcing it to proxy the stream with a 30sec buffer? (you should also
set your hardware to "show buffer fullness." not sure tho if that
available on newer hardware)

We were discussing in another thread that there probably won't be new
devices for a while because most the of the developers are no longer at

live up to its potential.

My biggest obstacle in recommending Squeezebox at this point is lack of
stability and frequent changes in UI that have characterized the past
couple of server releases.

That said if Logitech is no longer updating ip3k devices like the
receiver and the boom, they really should refresh the controller, so it
can be a better player.

i already said i have no exp w/sonicwall. perhaps i have made an
incorrect interpretation of the above, but i don't think so. i do
think you need to reread the thread.

what i want explained, is why the computer is more robust than the slim
hardware, if both are behind the sonicwall? (i'm not sure if the stream
is also behind the sonicwall or not, but i'm not sure that matters as to
my point)

i am basing what i am saying on what he said. so perhaps at this
point, he should clarify things, but i think my interpretation is the
correct one. if i'm wrong, np. but i can only base my replies on what
i read.

That looks like one problem, although I can't guarantee it's the only
problem. The location of the file(s) should be the last argument, so
you should use:
sudo /opt/genpuid/genpuid 57aae6071e74345f69143baa210bda87 -logex
-m3lib="/var/cache/musicip/cache/default.m3lib" -r -archive

And don't forget to look at that other thread I pointed you to. Good
luck.

I switched from a WRT54GL which worked perfectly, to a WRT160N v3 which
also works perfectly. Since the WRT54 already worked so well, I can't
say that I see any improvement with my Squeezeboxen, but at least my

newest DD-WRT on all my wireless routers. I've got a Boom and a Duet,
all running wirelessly less than 10 meters from the AP.

Since this is basically dreaming or wishing here goes:

1) Receiver II: based on a Touch without a display and no TinySC
server/USB. Keep it upright so the WiFi antenna is vertical. Basically
a Zone module that has 24/96 native output. Keep everything to a
minimum to keep cost down as low as possible.

2) Boom II: A Boom with a Touch display.

3) Big Touch: A 7 inch touch tablet LCD with a 15 hour rechargeable
battery. All NMP electronics in the base unit that is NOT a docking
station. The base has Balanced Analog outs (plus RCAs and both Digital
outs), built in powered USB Hub, two powerful CPUs one just for running
a full built in server, 4GB of RAM, and an MSRP under $495. Sold as a
single unit, no separates, no remotes, and the only accessory is a
charging station because the base is not a docking station.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox randomly drops station

2010-05-12 Thread MrSinatra

my understanding is the default way internet radio works is that
regardless of how you start the connection, ultimately it becomes a
direct connection between the hardware and the internet source of the
stream.

b/c i was complaining to Andy, he did put in a feature in SBS where you
can force SBS to "proxy" the stream, supposedly making it more reliable.
i think it does, but not enough. its what SBS does by default when two
or more pieces of hardware are sync'd.

in addition, in both the hardware and software, you can up the buffer
times to 30 seconds i think.

in my exp, no matter what you do with slim configs, winamp is far more
robust and reliable.

I disagree. Now the Touch is out, I don't see why they couldn't rattle
out a few variations based on the same internals. A larger screen
version (7" like the O2 Joggler would be good), a Boom replacement
(They already have the DSP and engineering done for the case, just haul
out the SB3 based system and put a touch in there. you get the idea.
The majority of that is hardware development as the vast majory of the

Boom II = Boom + Touch + Radio, best of all three

with Touch attributes:
- Color LCD display, same size as Touch (but I'll take larger ;))
- TinySC onboard
- USB
- Full size alpha/num IR remote

with Radio attributes:
- Keep the physical buttons (don't need touch screen)
- Dedicated Volume knob
- Built in carry handle

with Boom attributes:
- Stereo speakers (bit larger is better, but I'll take the current
Boom speakers)
- Line Out (stereo, sub, headphones)

Improved Boom attributes:
- Larger enclosure (for the slightly larger speakers mentioned above
adding a bit more thump)
- Selectable X-over for Sub out
- Add programmable buttons
- Dual selection Presets (press Preset 1 = x, press & hold Preset 1 =
y)
- Presets can also be set for Folders, sub-Folders, or Playlists

And for the love of god, DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ALARM FUNCTION and don't
market it as such!

Re: [slim] What product you'd like to see next

I would like to see continued progress to improve sound quality (as was
done with Touch) and improve the user experience. Some of what I would
like might run counter to some of the other comments made. I think
simplifying and reducing customization options, streamlining menu
trees, cleaning up the more troublesome and nagging software problems,
etc., will make the products more broadly attractive. And more
successful.

I think the days of courting former Heathkit customers are long gone,
there just aren't enough of you guys around to warrant the attention.

I'm concerned whether anyone's wish list will be achieved, given the
staffing reductions and turnover.

Re: [slim] iPod + iPeng, which iPod?

2010-05-12 Thread azaz44

Hmm, I got confused.

My library is a lot of files, organized in folders, which are nested.
It happens sometimes there is a folder with tracks and other folders
inside. This is because it's classical music and any tagging doesn't
really work. Will this work then for me?

What I want is browsing the collection and be able to "play" or "add"
on any item - folder or file. Just like in SC.

I don't need cover art that much (although would be nice), and don't
need any album behaviour. I have SC configured in a way it plays a
single track only, if I play/add on a track.

I'm just one step from buying an ipod, I really hope the answer is
"yes" :)

Cheers

Not quite that simple: an iPod can only contain music from 5 iTunes
accounts. But yeah, seems there is no restriction on the number of
iPods. (not like I'd ever buy an ipod...)

It's still silly, and still nothing Logitech can do about it.

(Nor, really, can those who sell DRM -- they have contracts in place
that list the terms of playback, and would have to define exactly how a
Squeezebox fits into the scheme of limits... which is hard to do when
you already have signed contracts in place. No one wants to
renegotiate.)

Hi Dan,

Differences between SBS and ACC have been reported before and could
almost always be related to a tagging issue. In this case I expect that
11 albums have either no artist or album name specified. I would suggest
you let a tagging program scan your complete music directory and then
sort by artist and again on album. I think you may find the clue...

Let me know the outcome please

That really is the key. When functionality is broken or removed by an
update then users expect it to be fixed/restored even if the fix
requires "development" work on older platforms. It is fine to say that
the end of life stuff won't get new features but anything that breaks
(or has already been broken and it waiting in the queue) needs to be
addressed.

Yes. Just a very basic box achieving the highest quality. Maybe a box
without its own DAC, but that would not save much.

The Logitec "Airport Express" at about the same price.

I have a Linux server (Ubuntu 8.04) which I've installed the virtualbox
software in. In virtualbox I've created a new virtual machine which I've
installed Windows XP in. So I'm basically running a sub computer on the
computer. In the virtual machine running Windows XP, I've installed
Spotify+DSBridge.

SBS runs on another computer and connects to DSBridge using the
network.

Since virtualbox is available on both Windows, Linux and Mac the same
solution should work on all these platform. The only limitation is that
it requires a little bit more memory since you will need to have enough
memory to run two computers, the real one and the virtual one using
Windows.

Re: [slim] SB3-Remote purchase?

2010-05-12 Thread Rhindle

I just received a Touch IR remote yesterday for use with an SB3 or SB1.

It works, but compared to the SB3 candy bar remote, it is missing
"Browse," "Size," and "Brightness." Which is a bummer because I do use
the latter two from time to time.

Also, for me, the "Now Playing" and "Search" buttons do not work. Can
anyone comment on this? Did I get a broken remote? Did they change
the IR codes? Is it a matter of installing newer server software
(which I've been avoiding because the Linux install was extremely
frustrating last time)?

I'm disappointed that Logitech no longer sells replacement parts or
accessories for the older products. Slim Devices was great about this.
I'm glad I don't own a Transporter.

How about something having both - if you rotate the controller that the
display changes modes, from portrait to landscape and vice versa. My
wife's iPod Nano behaves this way, which I thought was pretty cool.

My initial reaction is that the Controller is much about dealing with
long (tall) lists, therefore portrait. Of course, the Now playing
screen would be more pleasant in landscape mode, but for actual
usability I would choose portrait.

What docking station? SB Radio is a $150 alarm clock that streams

Software:

+Make it darn easy for ordinary people to set up. One way could be
partnering with Vortexbox and a few select router-brands (specific
models).
+More services. Grooveshark. Spotify. We are lots of customers that
don't life in the US.
+DRM. If my server has the rights to play a track, it should be able to
stream it through SBS.
+Better interaction with ones musiclibrary (browse, search,
randomplay)
+Fix the ui for setting up synchronization. (!) This is one thing that
should just work out of the box.

Hardware.
+Build stuff on basis of the Radio and Touch: I would like to see a
one-in-all stationary (wall mountable) box with enough oompf to replace
the average living room stereo. Throw in a few analog and digital
inputs.
+Controller mk 2. Touchscreen but with presetbuttons and a few other
hard-buttons.

[slim] Grace Solo WiFi Receiver

2010-05-12 Thread lrossouw

New competition, thought it looks ugly and is mainly for internet radio.
Also plays UPnP services.

http://www.gracedigitalaudio.com/solo-wireless-radio-media-streamer-p-94.html

Read this review but it is quite a difficult review to follow. He says
the Sonos should support UPnP as well but then says this device should
support a more generalised version.
http://deviceguru.com/grace-solo-internet-radio/
Reading between the lines "occasionally gets stuck, requiring power
cycling (not often enough to be a nuisance, though)" I'd say it isn't
great.

It works ! Thank you SO MUCH !

My problem was that I've never noticed the link to create favorite link
in SBS ... With that, it's ok !

I will try the configuration with mySBS.com to see how it works !

[slim] SB3 display cycling through brightness settings

2010-05-12 Thread Gus

hi all,

For some reason the display on my SB3 is cycling from bright to unlit
in a continual loop. I thought it might be something to do with when
the unit scans the library, but its not. Then tried updating the
firmware, but again, it's still cycling. Any ideas why this would
happen?
