[slim] 7.5.4 Release Notes?

2011-05-16 Thread pablolie

As I was setting up a new machine... that's when I updated to 7.5.4
(from 7.5.3)... and I only noticed because all SBs wanted to upgrade
firmware...? I never saw an official notification, nor have I seen
release notes. I find that strange. I especially would have liked to
see release notes. Come on Logitech, best practices...?

Since my principal means to access TV is iPlayer I am stuck with it.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-05-16 Thread socistep

Hi Christian

As per my post above I love the new version of the app.

However I am having problems on my HTC Desire HD, basically I am having
problems connecting to my server, it seems to me that if I have been in
Squeezecommander once, exit and then re-open it won't find my local
server, it just comes up as disconnected and then when I click to
connect it won't.

The only way I have to solve this problem is to restart my phone and
then it connects as expected automatically.

Please can you advise on what I should do to investigate and I'll also
supply any information you need

Thanks
Ian

I have given an example below, highlighted with red, where it is very

squeezeslave doesn't use any pulse audio libraries and the OSS static

I don't see the product listed anywhere if you follow any of the Audio

linked. So it may be well and truly dead, but someone forgot to take
the page down. Or it could still exist, but they've obliterated all the
entry points where someone would normally find out about the product.
With Logitech anything is possible, esp on their web site

There are no other processes that are using a lot of CPU. Also, I did

Likewise, if you do a strings

Is it possible that the PulseAudio routines are initialized but just

[slim] Automating Player Synchronization

2011-05-16 Thread nathan_h

I've got hardware and software players around the house.

I have iPeng and Squeezepad.

I have a heck of a time keeping everything in sync, even with all the
manual adjustments one can make on the server side.

Are there any iOS apps that will make use of the devices mic, and
listen to the out of sync players -- and send correction data to the
server and get them all in sync?

This would be a killer app!

[slim] Scanner continually terminates unexpectedly

2011-05-16 Thread CCusson15

I'm running 7.5.4 on an XP machine. I have my music library stored on a
1TB NAS with the drive mapped on the XP machine. I also have a 2Tb
drive whose location is listed under a shortcut so both folders will
show in my library.

Problem is, I try to scan and I get the following error. This happens
consistently.

Starting merge of various artists albums
[11-05-15 16:04:14.8923] Slim::Schema::Storage::throw_exception (82)
Error: DBI Exception: DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Can't create/write
to file 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Squeezebox\Cache\MySQL\#sql_4c4_0.MYD

I've checked that folder location, and there is no file named
#sql_4c4_0.MYD. But either way, I checked the folder permissions and
made sure that every user has full control.

Any ideas? My next step would be to roll-back to 7.5.3 as others have
suggested.

Thanks,
Chris

2011-05-16 Thread tcutting

There shouldn't be a need for your hardware players- they should remain
synchronized without any external intervention. The software players
are a different matter, however. There are likely too many variables
in play to make this practical.

Re: [slim] Automating Player Synchronization

2011-05-16 Thread nathan_h

I'm not sure what too many variables means, but I count two
adjustments that should be able to compensate for all the variables at
a given point in time:

Player Start Delay (ms)
Player Audio Delay (ms)

It would be great for an iOS device to measure the actual output of all
the devices, and adjust the two variables based on current actual
conditions (ie, taking into account the end result of too many
variables).

That is, other variables can likely be compensated for with these two
adjustments -- and as those other environmental factors change, if the
system isn't smart enough with the settings listed below to
self-correct, the user could walk around among the different
zones/devices and use the iOS app again, to get things back in sync.

It wouldn't be a set-and-forget operation, but it would be much faster
than typing in numbers into the web interface, hoping to dial things
in.

---

Separately, there are two user-adjustable preferences about how often
to address sync issues that the server detects:

Minimum Synchronization Adjustment (ms)
Network Packet Latency (ms)

For extra credit, the iOS device could allow adjustment of these --
either recommended values or something fancier.

The problem is that most computer audio drivers keep internal buffers

I could create one. And then I thought: How many other people would
want such a thing? And if I'm just creating it for myself, isn't it

So I totally agree.

Looks like that extra SB Receiver I was going to sell may get hooked
into my computer speakers aux port

And I'll have to find a good deal on a Radio+battery, for carrying
around the house to places I haven't wired, instead of using the built

The only way I have to solve this problem is to restart my phone and

Please can you advise on what I should do to investigate and I'll also

I have same phone running stock android 2.3.3

I get connected.
As long as I'm home I can quit the app and always get connected again

Umm... not so easy:
1. You have different time bases between your iOS device, server and
players.
2. You've got some transmission and processing time, which is also
non-deterministic
3. You have some delay due to the different range to the speakers, for
a 10m distance this is 1/30th of a second, so indeed significant.
4. You still don't know which one of your players is in front and which
one is behind.

Judging from the Inguz plugin, which does this for room correction but
only for a single room, static environment and the processing
requirements it has I don't believe all of this is feasible.

Re: [slim] Automating Player Synchronization

2011-05-16 Thread bluegaspode

Squeezeboxes and iOS playback shouldn't be getting out of sync.

These devices know fairly exact where they are in the playback stream
and report that to the server. The server also measures the network
latency so can accomodate for that as well.

So the only real delays (in my opinion) can come from the software
players like SoftSqueeze/SqueezePlay/SqueezeSlave who don't know the
audio latency of their own playback chain.
Also if you have some extra gear on the audio outs of your Squeezebox
there might be an extra delay, but this should be fairly constant (at
least when using analog outs) for any extra device?

The latest version of Squeezebox-Server is 7.5.4.
Maybe you changed the 'playlist modification mode' on the settings

watch the (full) playlist (wait 1-5seconds until it updates) after you

I see the same annoying behaviour, here.
It looks like SqueezeCommander resynchronizes its cache whenever the
Squeezebox Server database has been updated, and as I'm running a
nightly wipe rescan, it's resynchronizing every morning (or whenever
I use it for the first time in the day).
As I'm pretty sure the items' IDs won't change every night, but only
when I make big changes in tags, I would appreciate an option to not
automatically synchronize the cache with the DB.

Not in my experience.
Due to it's large audio buffer SqueezePad needs a bit longer until it
gets into sync though, so songs might be off in the first 30 seconds of
the first song of a playlist.

On a full wiperescan item IDs change completely.
Even on a partial rescan one cannot be sure if a particular album
changed the tracks.

So any caching solution needs to wipe it's cache on every rescan (be it

What me and SqueezeCommander also do use is the Android market

Re: [slim] Automating Player Synchronization

2011-05-16 Thread nathan_h

Hi, it is:

One (sometimes two but that is rare) squeezebox receiver, and
One squeezebox classic, and
One Boom

The Boom and Classic are close enough I can hear both at once.

To simplify I am comparing the ipad and the boom.

Maybe i should turn everything off except the ipad and boom? That's
not a real world uae for me but might be good data?

As far as I can tell, if you leave the files untouched, it's not true.
The files are scanned in the same order, and unless something changed
in their tags, their IDs will be unchanged..

But the database starts to count all IDs from the last used offset. So
IDs get higher and higher after each rescan.

Couldn't demo my Squeezebox in public to a friend because of that
limitation.
