[slim] Re: Qnap questions

2006-06-28 Thread Fifer

agentsmith Wrote:
I am considering getting a qnap and has some quesitons:

 1. Performance: How is the performance especially with a lot of
lossless music installed? I have a Buffalo Linkstation with Slim
installed and the response time is dismal both from the remote control
and web. Would the QNAP having tested with SS perform much better?

 2. Ease of update and install: How does that work? With the Buffalo
you pretty much have to be a Linux guy to hack SS into it. Is the QNAP
 any better with updates?

 3. Plugins: Would it support all Linux plugins? How difficult to
install? Does MusicIP work with it?

 4. How to get TS-101 with SS installed? Can I get any old TS-101 and
install firmware? If not, can I buy the firmware?

 Thanks in advance
1. I've got about 400 albums ripped to FLAC. The QNAP is a wee bit
slower from the web interface compared to a PC but IMHO, not much. From
the remote, I'm hard pushed to notice any difference. The response seems
instant.
2. Slimserver updates are easy. Download from the update site, copy to
a directory on the QNAP and reboot. That's it. Qnap firmware updates
are similarly easy, but done through the QNAP web interface admin page.
No Linux knowledge is necessary.
3. Some plug-ins are already available (AlienBBC for example). Others
can be implemented on request.
4. You have to buy the QNAP with SS installed as it is not user
installable. This means buying from the UK agent (Progressive AV or
their retail arm, Cooltopia) or one of their stockists. The reason for
this is that QNAP did not design the TS-101 as an open system, but as a
low cost NAS/webserver/printserver, but Progressive spotted its
potential as a low cost Slimserver so negotiated with QNAP to allow
them to install SS. I think they deserve a lot of credit for doing so.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 feedback

2006-06-06 Thread Fifer

When I ordered my Qnap, I wasn't sure how much I really needed it and
almost cancelled my order on a couple of occasions when the ship date
kept slipping out. However, now that I have it I wouldn't be without
it. It's a wonderful piece of kit and the price/performance ratio is
pretty impressive. Using the web interface, it's a wee bit slower than
my PC, but still perfectly acceptable. Using the remote control, I
notice no performance difference between the Qnap and my PC as server.

The only minor issue I experience is related to the one mentioned by
Heuer in post #651 in the update thread. I only get a 2-second drop out
and only when skipping the previous track. If the random playlist
progresses normally, every thing works fine. All my music is ripped as
FLAC and there is not a problem with large, uncompressed files.

The ability to double up as the printer server fro my wireless network
is an added, but useful bonus.

2006-06-03 Thread Fifer

Slimserver can only be installed by the supplier of the Qnap, but
regular user-installable updates are made available. So far, every
Slimserver update has been made available on the launch date. At the
moment, the unit needs to be RTB'd if the disc crashes and you lose the
install, but I believe that this is being addressed.

The support is very good and timely (the supplier, Progressive AV
actively participates in this forum), user requests are welcomed and
often implemented and most importantly, the unit works very well as a
Slimserver box.

2. I don't know. I just mirror all my music files to another drive in

I have two Linux based devices (the Qnap and a Nokia 770) and I know
nothing about Linux. It really isn't a problem. Copying music over,
once the Qnap is set up on your network, is done by drag and drop, cut
and paste, or ripping directly to the Qnap music directory instead of
your C:\ drive. The Qnap drive shows up under 'My Computer' in XP and
you can treat it like any other drive.

[slim] Re: White noise of death strikes - Any precautionary measures available?

2006-05-14 Thread Fifer

That's interesting. After years of faultless performance from my SB1 and
SB2, I had an odd experience similar to Mark's last night. Most Saturday
nights, I have an extended listening session after OH goes to bed and I
usually switch on the headphone amp a few hours before and repeat a
playlist on the SB2 just to let things warm up and stabilise.

After a couple of hours, I put my headphones on and heard a rough tone
(around 100hz-ish) from one channel and silence from the other (despite
the display indicating the track playing normally). Thinking my
headphone amp had developed a fault, I turned on my receiver to check
things were ok there (the headphone amp is fed with the analogue output
from the SB2 and the receiver with the digital coax) but there was no
sound from either channel. Plugging my headphones directly into the SB2
confirmed that it was a SB problem as the 100hz rough tone in one
channel was still evident, even after switching the SB2 of with the
remote. Cycling the power to the SB2 sorted things.

Fortunately, my Senheisser HD650s appear to have survived the
experience. Is this a known issue?

funkstar beat me to it. The clue is in the name. Squeezebox is a slim
client and the most of the activity happens at the server end. This is
the optimum solution for a distributed music system as there is little
point in duplicating the facilities the OP listed in every room. The
Qnap TS-101 does everything requested and you can run lots of
Squeezeboxen on it for a very slick system.

Not really true. Any -mains- cable needs to be safely buried and have
its own RCD, but the SB doesn't require mains power. The safe and easy
option is to keep the PSU indoors and extend the 5VDC cable to the
outside world. It's not only safe, but is a very small diameter and can
be tucked away at the edge of paths, beds, lawns or hidden under gravel,
mulch or other ground coverings. Just take care to use a heavy enough
gauge of low voltage cable to ensure that not too much voltage is
dropped over the extended run. Problem solved. Alternatively, batteries
are another option.

Slimserver works perfectly well on the Qnap. There is a problem with
AAC files which Progressive are working on (I understand this might be
Mark's problem). Given the efficient way other teething problems have
been dealt with, I trust that Progressive will fix this too. I can
understand Mark's frustration, but his email above doesn't give much
detail and I wouldn't want anyone to go away with the idea that the
Qnap as a Slimserver solution fundamentally doesn't work. It does and
very well, surprisingly well for the money.

It's all to do with expectation. I bought (ordered) this product in
November since when there's been the countless missed delivery dates,
the bull about the Chinese New Year and the rest. Even if there were
problems in getting the hardware shipped, presumably Progressive could
have been working in parallel to get SlimServer working in all its
guises. As it is, we have a product which shipped 3 months late and
doesn't currently do what it is supposed to.
Yes, I ordered in November too. It's a shame that the AAC and Ogg
Vorbis incompatibilities were missed, but they were and Progressive is
fixing it (Ogg is fixed already). All we are trying to do is keep
things in proportion. Slimserver on the Qnap works. There is a problem
with one file type which is acknowledged and being worked on.
Mark Wrote:
Yes I use Apple Lossless; disk space is cheap and it's pointless ripping
CDs to a lossy format because if you have a half-decent sound system,
the difference is night and day, far more than any messing with the
 power supply will reveal.
That's a good reason for using lossless, but not necessarily Apple
lossless. I (and many others) use FLAC for the same reason. Others use
WMA lossless.
Mark Wrote:
I also wonder about the long term viability of the solution. There no
charge for the integration work of Slim Server into the TS-101 and
apart from making a turn on the hardware, where's the incentive to keep
it up to date? I'm resigned to the fact that while a PC hosted SB3 is
likely to evolve for the better over time, a TS-101 hosted SB3 is
likely to be frozen in time - bugs, warts and all - once Progressive
lose interest and move on to some other flavour of the month.

The TS-101 is a closed system and while it will always be useful as
NAS, the USP of it hosting SlimServer may or may not be long term.
With respect, perhaps you should have considered that before
purchasing? Nothing in this respect has changed since November. I'm
happy to take the risk as (a) Progressive's incentive will be the same
as SD's (who also provide free upgrades) - building a reputation and a
satisfied customer base and (b) even if support does stop at some
future date, the firmware at it's current level will still work as it
does today, the Qnap will still work as a NAS and it wasn't so
expensive anyway.

What's the slimserver performance like when you are not downloading

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-24 Thread Fifer

My Qnap has been running (almost) perfectly for nearly a week now. In
general use, it's really no different to using a PC server. The unit
gets warm, but no more than that. As a bonus, I'm also using it as a
print server on my wireless network and it works like a charm.

The only minor bug I've noted is that when playing a random mix,
skipping to the next track causes a one second drop out a few seconds
after the next track starts. It only happens when skipping (not when
the playlist progresses normally) and it is repeatable. My PC
Slimserver installation works fine in this respect. Paul is discussing
the issue with Slim so hopefully we'll see a fix. It's fairly minor
though and is the only issue I've noted. I'm very pleased with the
Qnap.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101

2006-03-20 Thread Fifer

Just to clarify for David (and apologies if you know this), you need an
Ethernet cable for (a) and (b). The same cable should fit both
applications. The wired SB3 comes with a 10 foot cable in the box. Cat
5e and Cat 6 is a reference to the type/quality of cable used and will
possibly be indicated on the packaging. If you are in the UK, ' these'
(http://tinyurl.com/ft8zz) are the sort of cables you need.

The noise level from the Qnap is very low. There are no moving parts
apart from the Hard Disk which seems pretty quiet to me. Perhaps
someone who has one in their listening room could comment though as
mine is in a different part of the house from where I listen to music.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-18 Thread Fifer

As one of those who tested the fix last night, I just wanted to provide
some feedback on my experience. Also as one of those who was pretty
critical of Progressive's communication during the delays in delivery,
I'd like to thank Paul for his superb efforts in resolving this problem
so quickly and effectively. I know Progressive are a relatively small
company and don't have a massive technical support resource to throw at
issues like this and I suspect much midnight oil has been burned by Paul
personally managing the implementation of this fix. Thanks Paul.

Ok. Downloading and installing the new firmware was very straight
forward, with the web front end stepping me through the process. I
suspect download and installation took no more than 10 or 15 minutes.
As advised, I killed previously mapped drives, rebooted the server,
remapped the public directory on the Qnap and then went straight to
drag and drop copying of my existing music library from the PC to the
Qnap. I don't have a Gigabit network, so used a hardwired 100MB
Ethernet connection and it took 5 hours to copy 3500 FLAC tracks (about
75GB). The copy was very straight-forward with no glitches. That took
until about 11pm, so I started rescanning music on the Slimserver,
switched off the PC and went to bed.

This morning, I got up, checked that the rescan had finished, moved the
Qnap connection from the PC to my wireless router/modem, rebooted the
Qnap, router and PC then started up my Squeezebox. I restarted network
setup on the Squeezebox and it found my old and new Slimservers.
Choosing the new Slimserver, I was listening to music within an hour of
getting up (which included showering, feeding the cat and making some
toast). Painless.

The Qnap itself is a very impressive little box and has a very solid,
weighty feel to it. I'll be having an intensive listening session
tonight to put the Qnap through its paces and I'll report on
performance tomorrow, but initial impressions are very favourable.
Tomorrow, I need to run a telephone connection into my study and move
the Qnap and router into the same room as my PC setup so I can use the
print server facility on the Qnap too. I have a feeling this is going
to be a very useful little box. :)

via ethernet. After I'd finished copying, I connected the Qnap by
Ethernet to my wireless router/modem so it could become part of my
wireless network, independent of the PC. I could have copied the files
over the network without a direct PC connection, but I thought that
ethernet might be quicker. Maybe not though. I hope that's clearer?

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-12 Thread Fifer

Well, I've had my TS-101 for two days now so I thought I'd give an
update on how I'm doing with it. In short, not very well so far.

Physically, it seems an attractive, robust, well engineered piece of
kit. It's heavier than I expected but feels solid and looks pretty
good.

I've had it hooked up via ethernet directly to my PC and by wireless
network (wired connection to my wireless router/modem, communicating
wirelessly to the PC). With both set-ups, I can see the directories on
the Qnap HD, I can work with Slimserver via the web interface and my
SB2 can see the TS-101 and recognises it as a Slimserver server.

The downside is that every attempt to copy my music library to the Qnap
has failed after a few minutes with this error: Error copying file or
folder. Cannot copy [filename]. The specified network name is no longer
available). This require a reboot of PC and Qnap to recover networking
ability at which point it can be seen that some files have transferred
before the error.

I've tried to copy files by Ethernet and by wireless connection (even
with the NIC disabled) which I think rules out a NIC problem on my PC.
Just in case, I updated my NIC driver but that made no odds. I've also
tried the following, again with no success:

Reinstalled TCP/IP.
Repaired winsock.
Switched off anti-virus software.
Updated NIC driver.
Repaired network connections.
Used different network cables.
Rebooted Qnap (several times).
Tried various networking settings in desperation.

Has anyone got a Qnap working properly yet. Has anyone seen similar
problems to me? Has anyone any suggestions?

Does the SB3 have a different remote? I've got two remotes (SB1 and
SB2), both heavily used and both look as good as new.

[slim] Re: Roku M500 + slimserver + flac/320CBR mp3 = breakups?

2006-02-21 Thread Fifer

This might be a really daft question (I know very little about the Roku)
but why is someone with a Roku who obviously dislikes SlimServer, not
using the Roku software instead of something third party, unsupported
(and apparently inferior) for his device?

Also, am I wrong in thinking that the version of Slimserver which is
compatible with the Roku is quite old by current standards? Is
goofygrin not dissing an obsolete, superseded version?

Finally, I'd advise anyone considering the Sonos for it's better remote
to explore the Squeezebox/Nokia 770 combination. It's a setup and
cheaper than the SOnos.

Thanks. I think that Progressive are the importers, so they will bring
in the shipment and then send stock on to distributors like Advanced.
If so, (and I've heard nothing to the contrary), I'm hoping those of us
who ordered from Cooltopia/Progressive will still receive our orders
this week as per the latest promise. I've been disappointed before
though. Hopefully Paul will provide an update.

Many companies have made an excellent and profitable business out of
catering to niches such as 'geeks, tweekers and audio nuts' (think
Naim, Linn, Meridian, etc). It's fairly basic economic theory that
niche markets are often far more profitable, higher-margin,
less-competitive sectors than the mass market and attract a customer
base with higher than average disposable income/discretionary
expenditure funding who tend to be brand loyal in their field of
interest.

Slim Devices might want to become more mass-market, but it's by no
means an imperative.

Again, if you want to run a successful mass market consumer products

highly profitable business catering to tech-savvy audiophiles without
giving a second thought to such concerns. It all depends on the
business model you choose to adopt.

There's a very common misconception that the only way to be successful
in business is to cater for the mass market. In some sectors, that
would be the worst way to go and would be akin to committing commercial
suicide.

Despite a promise the last time I contacted Cooltopia (after the last
delivery date came and went) that 'they'd let me know as soon as they
heard', I'd heard nothing so contacted them today to find out that they
'have now been told delivery will take place on 26th January' and that
'they don't have the resources to contact customers individually'. I
know they are a small company and that they are reliant on Q-nap, but
after 6 failed delivery dates and almost 3 months slip with no
unprompted communication, am I the only one struggling to be patient?
Even more regular posts here would help keep customers and potential
customers in the picture.

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 Skin

2005-12-30 Thread Fifer

one question to throw back at y'all--

macdaddy earlier in this thread suggested I modify the skin to make use
of some more horizontal pixels that can be gained in full-screen mode if
you select from the browser view-toolbar-(uncheck) fullscreen.

I'm kind of conflicted about this...I too want to be able to have as
much screen as possible, but the 'remove toolbar from fullscreen'
option is not sticky. That is, you need to manually uncheck it every
time you open the browser to have this work.
My initial inclination was to agree with davep above as it would be a
pain to have to check the box every time. However, I've played around
with the feature and it only appears to uncheck when you power down.
I've tried browsing around, closing the browser and starting it up
again, even waiting for a while until the screen saver kicks in but the
only way I can get the box to uncheck (other than through the menu
obviously) is to power off. I don't know about anyone else, but I never
seem to power my 770 down. The standby battery performance is so good,
it doesn't seem necessary.

Unless I've missed something basic, I vote for using the extra space.

If the shipping date has slipped yet again, it would be nice to get some
official confirmation, especially for those of us who ordered for
November delivery. I appreciate that new product deliveries do tend to
slip and I'd prefer a working product late to a buggy one on time, but
more communication might help ease the frustration of waiting.

[slim] Re: Buying SB3 in the UK

2005-12-26 Thread Fifer

Dom,I know how frustrating it can be when you buy a faulty product,
especially when it's possibly your first experience with the company
concerned, but might I suggest that you reserve judgement until you see
how SD support your issues? I'm a UK customer on my second product and
I've found the hardware quality to be excellent, the Slimserver
software to be much more stable and capable than most commercial
offerings but, above all, the customer support to be unparalleled.
Many companies (much larger than SD) have teething problems with new
product hardware, but few support customers with issues as well as Sean
and co.
