That's perfect Steve, thank you - exactly what I was looking for.

In case anyone else wants to use this (and so I can remember what I did

the revised version:

$files = Get-ChildItem c:\music -recurse
foreach ($f in $files) { $f.LastWriteTime = $f.CreationTime }

[slim] Windows: update file modified date based on created date

2011-05-23 Thread hunta

SqueezeCenter lists 'New Music' based on modified date rather than
created date. Therefore if I go through updating artwork, or any other
tag data, I lose the natural order.

The created date is untouched, and seems to be much more reliable for
reflecting when files entered my library.

1) Can I use this for determining new music instead of the modified
date?

2) If not, as I suspect, does anyone know of a utility to update the
file modified date based on created date? I've found a few which allow
manual stipulation of a date, but not which will perform batch updates
based on another value.

 1) I don't think so.
 2) There are a lot of utilities to set the date to something specific,
but I am not aware of any software that does exactly what you want.
Your best bet would probably be to write something yourself, in e.g.
 .vba or Python.

I totally agree - now I'm there though, hopefully I can sort the dates
out and I won't need to revisit too often.

Unfortunately my vba / Python skills are totally non-existent, so if
anyone has anything they can help with it would be most appreciated.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-03-29 Thread hunta

erland;621578 Wrote:
I'm pretty sure that's always going to be the case as long as the third
party offering exists, Logitech will limit themselves to the basic
functionality because they aren't ready to invest enough to maintain
all the extras, so third party solutions will always offer something
more. We have seen exactly the same thing earlier with SlimScrobbler
plugin and also with Spotify plugin.

The issue, as already mentioned earlier in this thread, is that some
users are going to be satisfied with the basics and won't buy the third
party offering when they can get the basics for free from Logitech. The
result on longer terms could be that third party developers no longer
feel that it's worth to compete with Logitech since a significant part
of their income probably comes from the users that deside to use the
 Logitech provided solution.

So, even though a Logitech provided Android app might feel like a good
idea, I am a bit worried about the consequences on longer terms.
Hopefully I'm just unnecessary worried, but...

It would feel a lot better if Logitech tried to work together with
third parties instead of competing with them since they both want the
 same thing, more Squeezebox customers.

I agree completely. The way I see it though there'll always be a
distinguishing feature - Logitech are never going to introduce native
playback into a free app while their meat and potatoes is selling
hardware players and the server software is also free. Therefore anyone
who isn't Logitech and is interested in developing a rival product MUST
have that feature if they want to charge for their offering.

If that's the case then I think, as consumers, we have the best of both
worlds - a free official controller, or quality, paid,
added-functionality third party players.

I just hope Logitech aren't going to take moves to prevent that
happening.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-03-22 Thread hunta

This is an interesting development - if word was out that Logitech were
developing an app then I hadn't got wind of it. Unfortunately I'm not
at home so can't take a look at it yet, which is kind of frustrating!

I'm assuming the one piece of functionality they'd never incorporate is
native playback as it could damage their player sales. On the one hand
that's good for the likes of flatterman et al. as it leaves a USP for
them. I hope Logitech don't get all heavy-handed and try to prevent 3rd
party development along those lines...

Or am I missing the point somewhere?

Just to clarify, I have server power control installed on my duet

I let mine turn itself off - just set your hibernation settings to
something aggressive like 5 mins. Assuming you're using the machine
(including playing via SqueezeCenter) it'll stay awake and it'll turn
off when you're not. WOL then nudges it awake again when you want to
reconnect.

I missed which OS you're on, but another advantage under W7 is that
things like virus scanners, batch back-up operations etc. can wake up
the machine to do nightly checks at say 3am when you're pretty sure you
won't be doing anything else.

[slim] Android / Apple devices as a player

2010-07-13 Thread hunta

Without wishing to detract in the slightest from the great work achieved
already by, amongst others, flattermann on Android and pippin on Apple
devices, top of the list of requests is always (understandably) to
introduce functionality to allow the device to act as a player.

This post certainly isn't intended to niggle again and demand instant
releases to turn our phones into Squeezeboxes overnight. These guys are
already under enough pressure from a justly grateful customer base.

I do genuinely wonder though why it's not been done yet by any of the
Apple or Android developers (not just pippin or flattermann), given
that it must be the number one feature being requested and would
without doubt make an offering stand above its competitors. Is there
something specific which makes it difficult to implement, or is it
simply (and quite understandably if so) a big job and therefore not
undertaken lightly?

Re: [slim] iPeng vs. Android apps...?

2010-03-03 Thread hunta

I have both iPeng on an 8GB iPod Touch and SqueezeController on a Nexus
One.

iPeng is a more mature product and is therefore more robust and has
been through one or two visual overhauls.

SqueezeController is less mature with the very occasional glitch here
and there but I wouldn't say it's flaky by any means. Some might say the
navigation is slightly more intuitive, although the cosmetics are still
being worked on (I'm helping out on the beta programme).

One major plus for Android is the lack of restrictions on what is and
isn't allowed. For instance, downloading tracks or whole albums /
artists at a time to local storage is implemented in SqueezeController,
but apparently disallowed (though theoretically easy to implement) by
the Apple Police in their infinite wisdom. It's the principle of that
which really jars for me to be honest.

In terms of applications, until one or other brings streamed playing in
first there's little in it. Both will take the place of a Controller
easily. You're better off focusing on your other demands for the device.
If it comes down to Apple vs. Android, I'd say that rests largely on
whether you're someone who likes an easy,
always-works-in-its-potentially-prescriptive way approach or something
more flexible, open source with the pit-falls that go with it.

FWIW I found myself in the second category.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-01-28 Thread hunta

I've just bought a Nexus One, my first Android device, and also own an
iPod Touch with iPeng, so I was pleased to come across this. Great that
there's an application which allows SC control on my phone, rather than
having to sit with two near-identical devices within reach!

Christian, I'm happy to help with any N1 testing - have sent you an
email.

The one biggest thing I notice having come from iPeng isn't necessarily
missing functionality (ability to download from within the player is v
cool for instance) so much as look and feel. Lists especially are big
and chunky. Squeeze Control for instance looks better to my eye, and
iPeng's new drag drop for syncronizing players looks nicer and is more
intuitive than the old way.

For all that, definitely the leading Android product at present and I
was happy to shell out a few euros for it.

[slim] UK: Boom high street stockist

2010-01-02 Thread hunta

Hi,

A friend of mine wants to buy her husband a Boom for his birthday
having seen my Classic. Trouble is his birthday's on Tuesday (5 Jan).
Does anyone know of a high street stockist in the Herts / London area? I
seem to remember Comet or Currys doing them, but they currently only
have the Radio and Duet listed on their websites.

Thanks

the first item now defaults to i.
You probably can't remove it while being connected to SBS so please go
to MySB, exchange the i for something else and then switch back to
SBS. In 1.2.1 you will be able to remove the item also from SBS and long
term the way it should be is this:
 https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/ticket/134

Sorry, but if I've understood you correctly then this isn't it. I've
gone into MySB and the first item on the bottom toolbar is Favourites.
Interestingly though the MySB main menu also defaults to More, whereas
if I've understood correctly it should be Favourites as that's first in
the shortcuts along the bottom.

Fair enough. I guess then that's what I'm saying - I don't think it
makes sense for More to be the default, because you're most likely to
want to use one of the items on the shortcut bar. You've put them there
because they're the ones used most often...

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-02 Thread hunta

Pippin, this is a really good release. Thanks for the time and effort, a
vast improvement over 1.1.2.

One thing though that I was really hoping for was the default screen
when viewing the main menus. When you click the left arrow from the Now
Playing screen, it always takes you to the settings page. In all
likelihood I'm going looking for more music to play, not change my
settings. I tend to browse by Artist or, possibly, by Album, so I have
these dragged down to the shortcut bar at the bottom.

Could it remember the page you were last on (between sessions too), or
failing that default to the first of the 4 shortcuts?

Hope this makes sense...

Re: [slim] Why do we need to chose SqueezeCenter/SqueezeNetwork?

2009-09-18 Thread hunta

I completely agree. If Logitech are aiming Squeezeboxes in their various
guises at the mass market, then things have to be a lot more intuitive.
The SqueezeCenter / SqueezeNetwork point is a prime (and to be fair,
probably the biggest) example. It's fine for those of us who have been
around a while and have had these concepts grow up around us, but a new
customer shouldn't have to read up to understand the difference, it
should either be obvious functionality or seamless.

The version of SoftSqueeze I have (3.2.1?) also installs

Re: [slim] Wireless bridge the other way around

2008-03-11 Thread hunta

Why wouldn't this work in ad hoc mode?

Because, I think, the Squeezebox isn't broadcasting a wireless signal.
It's not an access point, just a bridge. My understanding is that the
wireless bridge only allows cabled devices to hook on to a wireless
network (i.e. the Squeezebox is receiving wirelessly, then pushing out
via the cable port).

Re: [slim] Album Art acting weird!

2007-07-16 Thread hunta

Album Art is definitely one of the more arcane areas of SlimServer. SS
sometimes uses the album art embedded in the file's tag, sometimes
(various) file(s) in the file's folder. I don't pretend to understand
what it does when, but it does at least give an explanations as to why
you're seeing one version of the image in one page and another
elsewhere.

I don't know the specific answer to your problem but from issues I've
had in the past you could check the following:

- Stop SlimServer
- Put a copy of the graphic file you want to use as your artwork to one
side. Delete all other graphic files from the folder.
- Strip the album art from the tag using Tag+Rename. Even better,
remove all tags from the album's files and start afresh. There are
various flavours of tag and not all apps deal with all of them. I know
that T+R does and it's solved seemingly intractable problems for me in
the past.
- Drag drop the file you'd put to one side into T+R to embed a
version into the tag.
- Place a single copy of the file in the folder as folder.jpg
- If you're using MusicIP ensure that it's picked the files up afresh
now that the tags have been rebuilt
- Restart SlimServer
- Clear library and rebuild

Hope this helps...

[slim] What role does MusicIP Mixer's library play for SlimServer?

2007-05-29 Thread hunta

I was just wondering how SlimServer and MusicIP Mixer fit together.

A few times lately I've updated tags or added to my collection and
found that no matter what I do SlimServer won't pick up the changes or
additions until MusicIP has. This entails running up the application,
waiting for it to finish the scan and saving the library cache - the
headless version of MusicIP doesn't seem to be very good at keeping on
top of the contents of my music folders.

This is all basically fine, but I've forgotten to do this enough times
now and done enough head-scratching before I've remembered to fire up
the MusicIP front-end to make me ask the question:

Does SlimServer use MusicIP's database directly?

[slim] Double press of power switch to switch on SB3

2007-04-13 Thread hunta

I have two SB3's in a wireless setup, one in the lounge and one in a
bedroom. The lounge is getting around 65% connectivity, the bedroom
around 45% - not perfect, but no real problems.

I've noticed some strange behaviour though with the bedroom unit. If
the PC's been switched off it doesn't automatically detect SlimServer
running and hook itself up, whereas the lounge one does. If I hit the
power button it goes through the cycle of joining the network and
connecting to SS, but fails. If I hit the power button a second time
while it's in this process, it connects straight off! Once connected it
behaves perfectly until the PC is powered down.

Any explanations for this? While it's predictable and therefore not
hard to live with, it's not great on the wife-friendly scale.

Thanks in advance.

I am running iTunes on a MAC OSX with a wireless SB3 v. 6.5.1. Any one

I can commiserate, but I bet the wireless is to blame not the SB. I had
issues recently and thought it couldn't possibly be anything to do with
the network since I was still getting good internet access. I changed
channels just to be sure and hey presto, all was wonderful again.

NetStumbler is indispensible for diagnosing this on Windows - don't
know if there's a Mac flavour or something similar.

The other thing to look at is your network architecture. Presumably
you're wireless because you don't want wires, but is your Mac wired to
your hub? If not, would you be able to? This makes a big difference in
traffic and therefore packet loss. There's an article in the wiki about
it: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkDesign

Good luck!

[slim] Alarm functionality - off after...

2007-02-17 Thread hunta

Is there any alarm functionality I'm missing to switch off after a
specified (or even fixed) amount of time? This should be on both
SlimServer and SqueezeNetwork. The other day I had a change in my
routine and forgot to switch off the alarm. Since I wasn't at home to
turn it off on my way out as I normally do I had visions of it
serenading the neighbours for days until I got home. Fortunately it was
connected over SqueezeNetwork and I was able to disconnect it as soon as
I got to a PC.

If I could have the alarm auto-off after, say, an hour that would be
great. If it is the case that I've just not found this somewhere I'd be
grateful if someone could set me straight, otherwise I'll raise an
enhancement request.

Thanks.

[slim] Q on wired / wireless connection from server to router

2007-02-15 Thread hunta

Recently, following recommendations in the forum, I amended my network
set up so that the server is wired to the router, rather than relying
on the wireless network.

However, it seems that the only way the Squeezebox can connect is to
leave the wireless connection on the PC enabled, which implies that
it's using that rather than the ethernet.

Am I missing something? The router is a Netgear Wireless ADSL DG834G.

Many thanks.

Other than that I use MusicIP and LastFM, but I'm largely happy with

[slim] Last.fm stops SlimServer (6.5.1)

2007-01-11 Thread hunta

If I try to play one of my Last.fm playlists either using the remote or
via the browser interface SlimServer stops running.

I realise this is precious little info to work off, unless this is a
known issue. Any pointers please on how to start diagnosing the
problem?

Thanks.
