Interesting thread, I have often had up 6 or more SB's of various HW (logitech, Slimdevices, and Pi based) synced up in my house/yard, neighbors house for parties. All are hardwired. It has worked great if I make a playlist and use LMS song crossfading . I always thought It would be nice if there was a plugin for a popular SW based mixing SW. [slim] Intermittent issue with radio stream on SB2
Guy's I have been listening to a local sports radio stream on my SB2 from my home office for years. Lately it work intermittently, if it works, it works all day. otherwise I get the following error message while selecting "Problem: can't open file for" message. Other Pi based players in the house can open the "favorite" stream. Below is the stream assigned in my favorites: http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s12321&formats=aac,ogg,mp3,wmpro,wma,wmvoice&partnerId=16&serial=69377127c59e4cc2eb8ad36938078608 I have tried opening the same station/stream via the iHeartradio plugin and get the same error message. Other radio stations play just fine on the SB2. Below is the radio stream log output. I am running LMS 8.2.1- 1632112486 within a jail in TrueNAS. [slim] LMS issue with Squeezebox Receiver (duet)
Hi guys, we had a power outage yesterday and I ran into some issues with my LMS and Squeezebox Receiver (duet) after the power returned. 1st I had a hard time reconnecting a duet, then after the duet was recognized it would disappear again. Then I noticed all my players were dropping on and off the player lists. I have a variety of player types ranging from squeezebox2's, SB player's, Squeezelite, and squeezebox radios. My LMS platform is a Pi4 running MAX2PLAY. I suspected file corruption due to the power outage so I upgraded LMS to 7.9.3 - 1591161343 as a start. Everything is stable now except for the Duet. The duet does not fall off or disappear from the player list anymore, but when i try to stream music to the Duet , nothing actually plays, but it appear like 3-4 seconds of the song is being streamed before it stops and starts from the beginning recursively. The Duet is hardwired to the same Etherswitch as the LMS Pi, so i do not suspect any network issues. I have tried rebooting/resetting the Duet many times without any luck. I suspect it is related to the power outage, and my next steps would be to reinstall MAX2play/LMS , but I thought i would ask around here for ideas prior to doing that. If it was not for the fact the other players were demonstrating similar symptoms earlier, I would also speculate the duet may have been damaged during the power outage. Thanks in advance. [slim] Writing Playlists to thumb drives for vehicle use
Hey guys and gals. What would be the easiest way to copy the contents of a LMS playlist to a thumb drive? I have close to 90K tracks in my music library and my RAM truck "system" max's out at 20K tracks. I thought maybe I could make some playlists with LMS and copy the content to a thumb drive? Each thumbdrive would be a different playlist. It would be a neat LMS plugin! Only way I can think of is using a music app such as Media Monkey which accepts M3U files and give the app the same mount point as LMS uses for the music library. Thought? Hi Guy's been a while since I have been here, good to be back. I did a fresh install of Freenas 7.4 with Slimnas 2.0.2 and LMS 7.80 on the weekend. Re: [slim] Best Router for 3rd party Software
Good reply, thanks! But there are reasons why I need a L3 box between our networks. 1st is DHCP, both of us have our own usage sensitive $$$ ISP uplinks and ISP provided home router gateway/modems. Therefore we like to keep our "north bound" traffic segregated (unless one of us has an outage). Therefore that requires us to keep our DHCP discovery packets segregated as well so that all hosts have the "correct" gateway address. Also when we shared a common vlan/bridge group in the past, I have been having issue's with interaction between his SC and my controller, which prompts me to upgrade my controller continously. So that's what I would like to insert a cheap low powered L3 switch in between our networks. I could create two vlan (bridge groups) on the L3 switch. Each with a unique L3 virtual interface belonging one of our networks. The vlan connected to my network would be a single port vlan. The vlan facing my neighbors network would have 2 ports, one to connect to his network, and one for my NAS. The L3 switch would of course be located off site at his house, giving be a off site backup. He will likely locate a NAS at my house as well. If DD 3rd party software support's L3 switch "like" functionality on the LAN or WAN port of a generic "linksys" my problem would be solved. I have not been able yet to determine that. Because my existing router/modem (2 wire) is provided by my service provider, it has a ISP specific F/W on it preventing me from many of the advanced menu's. If I was to spark up an old PC for this application , I would "sign out" a multi NIC PC simulator from work. These "Sims" can run's our Service Router software. But again, I would like to keep it quiet running and low power. Thanks again -- sfraser 2 Chan. [slim] Best Router for 3rd party Software
Hey guy's, This might not be the best forum, but I figured I would get some good insight from the more network savvy members. I am looking for suggestions on what would be the best home network router to purchase, and who develops the best 3rd party software for the above router? My neighbor and I have a GE network link buried between our houses, I want to place a router between the networks. With OEM S/W most "home" routers only have 2 routed interfaces, and the WAN routed interface will usually only support one ARP entry. Good 3rd party software will allow you to support multiple routed interfaces, eliminating the above WAN interface shortcomings, or alternatively allow for multiple L3 interfaces on the LAN switch portion of the unit. I also require a sustained throughput of 50mbps for HD video and support for static routes. We currently have my neighbor's Ubuntu box with 2 NIC's acting as as router, between the two networks, but this is causing me havoc because he is running his SC on the above box, which is causing my controller to flip out. Apparently his SC is a newer version, which prompts my controller to try and upgrade. Alternatively, does anyone know how to limit SC to communicate out a single NIC on Ubuntu? Any feedback would be appreciated. -- sfraser 2 Chan. In general, most people experience better performance (stronger signal at longer distance) using the new N routers in "G" mode. I believe this has to do with advancements in technologies involved in wifi antenna design etc. A stronger signal at longer distance can equate to more bandwidth, but you will never exceed the G standards of 54mbps. [slim] Internet Radio VS SC buffers on duet
Hi, I was hoping one of the developers may be able to answer this question. I have a wifi connected Duet in my exercise room. Internet radio (16kbps -32kbps)continuously times out, while streaming FLAC files (900kbps) from my SC never times out. I have several other wifi connected SB's throughout the house that only occasionally time out or have interrupted Internet radio streaming. Question, I assume that Internet streaming buffer size on the Duet is both smaller than streaming from SC, and smaller than other SB models? Thanks Scott -- sfraser 2 Chan. Re: [slim] Duet on a boat in the jungle of Panama !
I thought about it in our new boat, but being there is all ready a mini jack input built into the marine stereo, so an ipod seems a lot simpler. I will be putting one into our hunt camp this year. We have our own power, via solar panel, with 12 volt batteries and a 1000w inverter. We run everything we can off of 12 V DC directly to keep things as efficient as possible. therefore I will be using a Koolu/SlimNAS platform which requires 12 V DC input as the SC. The duet and wifi router will run off the AC inverter. Speakers are Cambridge Soundworks satellites and amp/subwoofer which run off of 12V DC as well. I wouldn't like to try it with DHCP! I don't see, or there should not be, any problem having multiple SB's and multiple SC's on the same L3 network/broadcast domain. Each SC and SB host has a unique MAC/(DHCP assigned IP) combination. The controller, in the advanced feature menu , has a "music source" option which lists all SC's currently available on the local network. This allows the controller to point the SB that is currently being managed to anyone of the SC's available (thats how I understand it). Higher level protocols should take care of any session communications between the SB and the chosen SC. I think where the problem lies, is with the controller, I think it may have a tough time "jumping" between SC's? Particularly if the SC or the end SB requires a S/W upgrade. Can anyone comment on the communication exchange between the controller and the SC? Cheers, Have a great weekend everyone. -- sfraser 2 Chan. Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection
Guys, found a little bug in SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 - 18932. Nothing major, and you may already be aware of it. I have two SC in my home network. One is running an older version of SC. If i try to point an SB from one SC to another SC from the controller, the controller will get caught up in a endless message regarding upgrading the S/W. This does not go away, even after i flash the SB by using the brightness key on the infrared remote of the SB. Only way out of the loop is to remove the batteries on the Controller. -- sfraser 2 Chan. [slim] Controller browsing Issue
Hi, I am running the Stable 7.0 SC on XP. I been having an issue with my controller. If I try to browse a directory structure within the music folder after the controller has been sitting for a minute or two, more often than not, the controller will freeze. Sometimes it will un-freeze and let me navigate the upper menu, but after it freezes once it will never allow me to enter an "artist" or "album" in the "music folder" again without turning off the controller. It does not appear to be a wifi issue. I have tried it in the same room as my WAP and have tried it in other rooms while wifi SB's have been streaming FLAC. Also I can usually turn off the SB via the controller while this is happening. I can also successfully browse the "music folder" directory structure with the standard remote while the controller is "hung up" Any comments or suggestions? cheers and thanks. -- sfraser 2 Chan. Depending on your requirements, you could build your own NAS using a cheap PC with a large hard drive(s). There is free NAS software available (Search on "FreeNAS"). SqueezeCenter can be installed on a "FreeNAS" host. You could them move all your music to 2 directory structures on your new NAS hard drive . Create a File Share on your NAS pointing to the NAS directory where your itunes music is located and allow your PC's to mount this fileshare. It will appear like a new "drive" on your pc's. Then point your PC's itunes application toward your new music directory.Create a 2nd directory on your FreeNAS host and move all your SqueezeCenter Tunes into it. THis directory will be where your Squeezecenter tunes are located. Your end result would be a consolidated music directory within two directory structures on your new NAS, and Squeezecenter running on the NAS. Squeezecenter can access the local music files and stream them to your squeezebox's. Itunes can also access the music directory over the network share. It would be easy to totally consolidate your music directories in the future, it will be somewhat easier to do a highly recommended complete backup of your music files, and you will free up a lot of duplicated space on your PC's Good Luck -- sfraser 2 Chan. Quick question, how do you change the slimserver IP address in softsqeeze? I flip back and forth between my house and my lab, which are using different subnets. When I run softsqueeze at work it just hangs trying to find the server IP address . I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but obviously the file that contains the SS IP address is not removed, because the reinstall process never prompts me for the SS IP address, like it would if it was a 1st time install? You mentioned using the transporter VS SB3's for pro installs? I have not heard any comments regarding the Trans being any more reliable than the SB3? I would think the price point would make SB3's more attractive for multiple pro installs? In my opinion most problems have been on the back end (Slim Server). From what I understand it is the same for both units , after 6.50 or so? I have had a enough issues, usually a stop/start of SS or a reboot of either the Server platform or the SB will fix it . I agree with the earlier poster, who mentioned the use of a dedicated platform, otherwise it would b a "bear" to support, and you may even get dragged in regarding problems with other applications running on a non dedicated platform. -- sfraser sfraser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2026 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35307 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] lesson Learned with RAID 5 Implementation
Hi, I thought I would post this, it might save others some grief. Last year (XMAS 2005) I built a new PC platform which became the new household server (Slimserver as well). Santa Clause brought me a thermaltake Tower case and I purchased 3200+ AMD chip, new motherboard etc. I was seriously considering purchasing a RAID 5 Controller to connect the 4x300G SATA drives I picked up during the boxing day sales, however the Hardware controllers were quite expensive, so I decided to implement it the "cheap way" and purchased a ASUS motherboard with a built in Silicon Image controller with RAID capabilities. Installation went fine, Gigabit LAN between the server and the HTPC (EAC ripping platform) Fast Ethernet and wifi everywhere else throughout the house connecting the families pc's, laptops printers and 4 squeezebox's. 900 Gig RAID5 file volume for WAV files, FLAC files and important family pictures, documents etc. I encourged the family to store important doc's on the RAID5 volume. Everything was fine until early Nov 2006, when a power cable (splitter) which had a faulty ground pin similtanously powered down 2 of the 4 hardrives within the RAID volume. The drives were instantly "orphaned" and the RAID volume was no more. This effectively deleted 5-6 years of family vacation pictures, and 450 Gig of ripped CD's (WAV format). I shuddered at the thought of the time involved to re-rip the 600 CD's. Also the "minister of domestic affairs" stated that I shall recover the familly pic's regardless of the cost. I checked data recovery services, but all started at several thousand dollars, I called ASUS, they were no help, I called Silicon Image, their technical support basically told me to "piss up a rope" (thanks guys, I will remember that when making future purchases). I was reasonably sure the data was still on the disks, but how to access it? Neither ASUS or SI bundled any RAID recovery utilities with the motherboard software. I eventually came across a company called Runtime Software http://www.runtime.org/ who sell utilities to recover files off corrupted drives etc. They also had a utility for retrieving files off of damaged RAID5 volumes. In order to use the software they need to create a duplicate image of the RAID vol. that they would work from. Therefore I needed approx. 850G of disk space. So I purchased a Buffalo Terrabit station (NAS). The SI controller built into the motherboard would not represent the 4 SATA drives independantly, therefore i had to purchase a Promise 4 port SATA controller. Once the duplicate image is created from the original damaged RAID vol., Runtime need enough disk space to copy the recovered data to from the copied Image, therefore I required another 500G drive. Eventually I recovered all my data. I now have the original 4x300g SATA drives configured as JBOD on the promise controller. The JBOD is backed up to the NAS nightly using a filesync application. I have run 300' of direct burial CAT5 cable to my nieghbours house, I will be placing the NAS at his place, and in turn he can connect his squeezebox to my Slimserver over the network. I am also considering a power conditioner for the server. So that is my little story on how a 30 cent power lead cost me $1300 and a month with no Slimserver! Lessons learned, don't go cheap with RAID5, especially if you are putting all your eggs in that one basket. Thumbs up to Runtime software, and there support. Thumbs down to SI and ther elack of support. P.S. for the Network Engineers out there, my neighbour and I are thinking of also connecting our WIFI routers together and Running OSPF ECMP over the wifi and physical ethernet. Nothing like some more diversity, in most cases you are worried about the "random back hoe" taking down your primary linkin our case it's the "random garden hoe" :) Cheers, Scott -- sfraser sfraser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2026 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31963 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Issues with 6.2.1 & SB's
I have a couple funny issue's. I have 2 SB2's wifi1 and wired1. Both work very well. However, from the slimserver 6.2.1, I cannot see the wifi1 player. Interesting, from the wifi1's menu, it shows the slimservers IP address as the network's default gateway, and not the true IP address of the server. I will attibute this last bit to the fact it is coming in via wifi, and I am running 3rd party software on the Linksys router, which maybe be doing some internal NAT/redirect. The other issue, is trying to find the PIN on wired1. The setting menu's seem to be different on the two SB2's? I currently have the wifi1 registered with Pandora (thanks by the way, it's a great service), but I can't do the same with wired1, the PIN is not listed anywhere within the menu. THis thread is really neat. I like this slug idea. I am in the process of rebuilding the familly file server/ (my slimserver). It has become a huge time sink hole due to RAID controller/motherboard issues. Question, if you were running slimserver on a Linux slug with 2 500G USB drives, how would you back it up? 2 additional 500G USB drives attached to a PC? My whole rebuilding/adding an RAID controller was "spawned" (the correct word) by the thought of having a drive failure after I rip (wav) my 500 CD collection to disk. Quick Question/comment, My Slimserver service has stopped twice over the past few nights. Typically I will be accessing a file via the SB2 via the "browse file folder" menu. I will keep hitting the right arrow button on the remote and the SB2 will lose connectivity with the server, and then go into a setup routine i.e. "trying to connect to slimserver at 192.168.1.100". In order to try and isolate the issue , I have tried using my other SB2, when these occurences happen. I see the same message on my other SB2 as well. The problem is fixed by restarting the slimserver service on the XP file server. Both times when this happened I was drilling down the file structure from the "browse file folder" menu. Note, I have a rather large file structure with over 55,000 songs/files. Comments suggestions? Also is there a log file I can view which might give some insight?
