That might in fact be a result of the power failure. Try a factory and

Re: [slim] m3u file format

2011-12-27 Thread usch

It's the character encoding. LMS writes playlists in Unicode (UTF-8 with
BOM), while most (all?) other players expect them to be in the current
Windows codepage. You can open a playlist in Wordpad (not in Notepad)
and save it as a new text file, that should fix it.

Strange enough, however, if you create an M3U file from an external
application (without the #EXTURL lines), LMS itself expects it to be in
Windows encoding, too, and will choke on any UTF-8 characters. I would
call that a bug, but once you know it, it is easy to work around it.

ID3v2.3 only has the TYER tag which is meant to hold the year of the
recording, not the year of the release.

ID3v2.4 has TDRC (recording date), TDOR (original release date), and
TDRL (date of this particular release).

While Mp3tag can handle both variants, MusicBrainz unfortunately stores
only release dates, so you can't get the recording dates from there. I'm
not sure which tags SBS/LMS reads.

Uhm ... yes, sorry, probably that was a stupid question. What I meant
was, where do you get that information from? Some people put the
release year in the directory or file name. In this case it should be a
fairly easy task for Mp3tag to pick it up and write the appropriate
tag.

Otherwise you would need some kind of online lookup. MusicBrainz Picard
can do that (drag&drop the files onto the left pane, click "lookup"),
but of course only if the album is already in the MusicBrainz database.
If you want to set -only- the year it would probably require some Picard
scripting so that it doesn't overwrite your existing tags.

Everything else is done using the mixer panel of your soundcard.

If all else fails and money doesn't matter, it should be possible to get
a custom made display compatible with the SB2, SB3, Classic, and

interesting what the minimum quantity for a custom VFD is.

I have also replied to this numerous times. ;) The VFDs weren't a
catalog item, but custom made by Noritake especially for SlimDevices /
Logitech. If they are no longer being manufactured then probably
because Logitech doesn't order them anymore, so this argument doesn't
count. I think Noritake would be happy to make another batch. They
still do produce VFDs, it's their main business after all.

Good question. My biggest gripe was the Now Playing screen, but I think
that has already been resolved by your Custom Clock screensaver now.

What I am still missing is a more customizable Home menu. On my IP3K
players I have "Favorites" at the very top, right next to "Now
Playing". On the SqueezePlay devices it is all the way down and off the
screen. There should be a way to rearrange the order of the menu items,
like on the old players.

I also miss the RSS News Ticker screensaver. The feeds can still be
accessed through Extras > Information Browser, but it would be nice to
have the text scrolling by. I just noticed there is an "rsstext" item
type in the Custom Clock settings. If I can figure out how to use it,
it might do what I want.

Fortunately most of the new code is still open source. I hope that in a

That would have been my suggestion, too. Unfortunately Playlist Manager
doesn't seem to have any UI other than the menus on the player itself,
so it will not work with Moose or the Web UI. However, the latest
version of SqueezeSlave can emulate the SliMP3/SB1 UI when started with
the "--display" command line switch, so that should work with Playlist

Besides that, since IP3K players do hardly anything on their own
without a server there aren't many things that would have to go into
the player firmware.

Things that won't get implemented now:

- change the WOL behaviour so that you don't have to press the Power
button twice (first to wake up the server, then wait until the server
is up, and then again to actually turn on the player)
- allow entering of a stream URL even when not connected to any server
(probably WONTFIX anyway because they want you to use
mysqueezebox.com)
- allow entering of the actual WPA key (64 hex digits) instead of a
passphrase

and that's about it. I just thought of another one, but it slipped my
mind before I could write it down, so probably it wasn't that
important. ;)

Yes, that's the normal method - the server just passes the stream URL to
the player, and the player then retrieves the stream on its own.

You should be able to change that under Server Settings > Player >

change this setting though, so I can't say for sure if it actually

IIRC there used to be a favorites option when you pressed the right
arrow button on the Now Playing screen, but that got lost in SBS 7.5
since they are now displaying the useless Radiotime menu instead of the
SBS menu. :(

Very mixed ... it happens that I use the web interface, the IR remote,

Or you can simply close the tray applet (right click on the tray icon,

According to what I've read in other threads they seem to have more
stock in Europe than in the US.

A search for "Logitech Squeezebox Touch" on amazon.de yields no result.
Strangely, however, on the bottom of the page there is a recommendations
box saying "People who searched for similar items also bought ...
Logitech Squeezebox Touch". You can click through to the product page
from the recommendation, but there is no price and order button.

logitech.de lists the Touch for €299, given the current exchange
rate that is 30% more expensive than the US price.

I wouldn't hold my breath. :) It would be wise to wait for a couple of
days more to see if the new software version is really stable,

I wonder what will happen when they open the flood gates and zillions

same time. Hopefully they are prepared for that, unlike last Christmas

To me the SB2 looks slim and elegant, while the SB3 looks bulky with a

Re: [slim] Think I've been ripped off - Squeezebox Classic Store Demo Unit.. Help!

2010-04-02 Thread usch

The answer to all your questions is probably "yes, it is", but you are
still overlooking two important points.

First, the update itself has to be done by the existing player
firmware. If the update commands are simply not implemented in the demo
version, there is no way to get a different firmware into the unit
except with a hardware programmer.

And second, most likely the *.bin files contain only patches, not the
complete firmware, so for the missing parts you would need a ROM image
from a working retail unit to start with.

I don't think that Sean exaggerated much.

Let's see. Assuming you can dial through 4 stations per second (if you
still want to read the station names, not just skip over them), that
would take 8250 seconds, or in other words more than 2:15 hours. Just to
dial through the list, without even playing a single stream.

I think the user simply doesn't realize how many stations there are and
that you need to organize them somehow, or otherwise you would get lost
quickly. Reminds me of the old joke "Can you give me a print-out of the

Just seeing the names wouldn't help much. To mimic the traditional
radio experience you would need to play every stream immediately as soon
as it is highlighted on the display, without having to press the Play
button first, and then the Back button to get back to the menu. Maybe
this could be done with an app, but even then you would still get a
delay due to the initial buffering.

What do you mean with "command structure"? The menus? I don't think
there is a fixed listing, because you can enable, disable, and rearrange
items in the home menu, and plugins can add their own menu entries
anywhere in the tree. So you will have to figure out what fits your
particular setup.

But if you mean something else, feel free to ask again.

Yes, but that's how it is supposed to work when you don't sync the

That shouldn't be an issue. In sync mode the stream is always proxied
by the SB server, so it will only be fetched once from the original
station.

As for the original question, are you sure you are actually switching

Where is your music library located? If it is on a hard disk in your

If it is on a NAS, then it depends on the particular model. Some NASes

Re: [slim] SB3 Display Brightness

2010-02-13 Thread usch

I have a used SB1 which has the text "Problem! ..." burnt in by its
previous owner. It must have been sitting with an error message for
days, and the bad thing is that this screen is static and always
displayed at full brightness.

Now when it comes to display something that starts with a "P", the
first letter is barely visible. :( As is the right arrow symbol in the
bottom right corner.

toby10;516732 Wrote:

This would be true if you had the entire display lit all the time.
Unfortunately this is not the case, the pixels wear out differently
according to their use. So you have some pixels that are still like new,
while others have already significantly faded, which is much more
irritating than a screen that has become less bright as a whole.

A "clock screensaver", for example, is actually an oxymoron. It is all
but a screen -saver-, it is more of a screen -destroyer- since it
stresses a small number of pixels all the time. A scrolling display or
one that switches between different screens should cause less damage.
The most efficient way to save a screen, however, is still to set its
brightness to zero.

Re: [slim] mysqueezebox on twitter - how should I use it

2010-02-05 Thread usch

Just for the records, I've made a filter on Yahoo Pipes that converts a
twitter feed into a more Squeezebox-friendly format.

You can subscribe to it with either the RSS Newsticker screensaver or
the Information Browser plugin (but since configuring feeds on MySB is
borked this will currently work with your local SBS only):

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=707bf9a452c2ee510e9d68f61cab8fe7&_render=rss&name=mysqueezebox

The pipe also removes the "@" messages and all messages that contain
URLs, since these aren't useful on your SB anyway.

Also, the topics often are not primarily about the Squeezebox itself
(since the player alone doesn't really do much on its own), but about
its interaction with the Squeezebox server, mysqueezebox.com, the

Re: [slim] Will old Slim Devices work with new Duet system...

2010-02-01 Thread usch

I have a Boom and two SB1, and while synchronizing them is possible and
works fine most of the time, there are massive problems that keep
popping up, such as playback stopping with no apparent reason, or
players going mute until I power cycle them to recover. This is probably
a server problem that could be fixed, but I don't really expect that
anybody still wants to spend time on these old players.

Another limitation: SB1 and SliMP3 won't connect to mysqueezebox.com,
and are not officially supported by the TinySBS in the upcoming Touch.

Re: [slim] 7.4.2 nearing release, need your help!

2010-01-29 Thread usch

I don't have a Radio, but since this is a synchronization issue the
Radio might be affected, too, when it is in a sync group:

My MP3 collection consists of files of all possible sample rates.
Mainly 44.1 kHz, but also 32 kHz, 48 kHz, and even the odd 22.05 kHz. My
normal playback setup is a sync group of 2×SB1 and 1×Boom.

As long as I am streaming to a single player, everything is fine. But
when synchronization is in effect, I experience all kinds of playback
problems whenever a file is encountered that is not 44.1 kHz, such as:

- Both SB1s keep playing, but the Boom is mute while the play time on
the display still counts up.
- Playback stalls altogether (stills says "Now Playing", but is stuck
at 0:00 on all players).
- Title display on the players and in the web interface immediately
skips to the next track in the playlist and stays one track ahead of the
audio that is actually being played until I stop and restart playback.

Let me know if this is a known issue, or if I should file a bug.

Video capability might not make the players more expensive, but the
price for it would be even less development resources for the core
components audio, SBS, and MySB. I'd rather have the known bugs fixed
before they start implementing yet another feature.

I know that I must be a rare species, but I don't watch video at all.
My music library has nearly 20,000 tracks (and still counting while I am
ripping my CDs), but I don't own a single movie on DVD.

For your amusement: I only noticed that all analog TV transmitters had
been turned off when I read it in the newspaper. I was like "really?",
turned on my TV set, saw that I saw nothing, and turned it off again.
That was in 2005 if I recall right, and I haven't bothered to get a
digital receiver up to now.

So yes, for me video would be nothing more than a useless gimmick.

Re: [slim] The competition is catching up and some surpassing Squeezebox...fast!

2010-01-27 Thread usch

Argh. The day when Squeezebox goes video will probably be the day when I
start looking for a different system. Or at least freeze the current
state of my hard- and software and stop updating.

Video is a completely different concept. For example, you don't have
the typical artist / album / track relationship. Or would anybody want a
random mix of their favorite movie scenes?

The biggest drawback of all video-capable players I have come across is
that you -have to- hook them up to a TV, otherwise you don't even get a
menu to operate them because they have no display of their own. And I
surely don't want TV screens all over my flat.

IMHO the step away from the large text display to tiny graphics
displays was already a step in the wrong direction. Instead of enjoying
the cover art on the screen, people are asking "Why can't the Radio play
YouTube videos?" - the customer is never satisfied.

As for your question - is the TV program you want to listen to

fairly easy to grab the audio of that stream from the video player with

As far as I can see, the payed subscription only entitles you to play

Some users report that you get the option to download the last.fm app

2009-12-29 Thread usch

jimwillsher;499886 Wrote:

Unfortunately the year attribute is not well defined and is used
inconsistently. Some people put the release year of the album here (this
is also what happens when you tag your files with MusicBrainz Picard),
while others use it for the year when the particular track has
originally been released (which is what I prefer). Normally both will be
the same, but it makes a difference for compilations, for example.

I don't even know where the album year is taken from. I guess it's
either from the first track the scanner happens to encounter, or the
from the year attrbute of track 1.

Btw., there's a similar problem with album artwork. While it is
possible to attach different images to each track (I actually did that
for some whitesleeve vinyl singles, where I tagged the tracks with a
scan of the center label from side A or side B, respectively), SBS will
just pick one of the images and apply that to the whole album.

jimwillsher;499886 Wrote:
> It seem seen more silly to then show am empty year placeholder.

The funny thing is that if there is at least one album displayed, there
is also an "All Tracks" button which in fact shows all the tracks from
that year, including those not from one of the listed albums.

So the actual bug is that the "All tracks" button is omitted when there
are no albums shown.

Yes, having a closer look at the Custom Scan plugin is already on my to
do list. I'm just a bit scared that I might have to re-tag all of my
18000 tracks for optimal results. :)

Apparently it shows only entire albums that were released in that year,
not individual tracks. If you click on the album title it will show you
the year where to find that album.

Even worse, non-album tracks don't seem to appear anywhere at all when
browsing by year.

And yes, I'd call that a bug. If you click on a year, it should show
all albums that contain tracks from that year, just like you can click
an artist and it will show all albums, including "Various
Artists"-compilations, that contain at least one matching track.

You can do that, but at the expense of giving up the inverse feedback
loop that is normally part of an amplifier to compensate varying load,
component drift, and supply voltage issues, because you obviously cannot
feed the analog output back into the digital input.

Without the feedback, however, you have to do some forward compensation
in the DSP stage, which means you need to know the speaker
characteristics in advance. I don't know the current Sonos product line,
but as far as I can see, such a design is only feasible for units with
built-in speakers.

2009-12-27 Thread usch

peterw;499501 Wrote:
> They're sending digital signals from the amplifiers to the speakers???
Basically that's how it works, yes. The amplifier outputs an
oversampled, pulse width modulated, digital signal, which is then fed
directly to the speakers through a low pass filter that eliminates the
clock frequency. It's the same principle that is also used in switching
power supplies, except that a power supply is designed to deliver a
constant voltage, while a D-amp is designed to deliver audio signals.

The advantages are that such an amplifier has a very high power
efficiency factor, and that you don't have a traditional DAC that might
theoretically cause nonlinearities. The disadvantages are that you need
an extremely stable power source because every hum, ripple, noise, or
voltage drop is immediately superimposed on the output signal, and that
a switching amplifier creates HF noise similar to a switching power
supply.

No, the Squeezebox server never writes to your music library.

But you can "zap" a song while listening (press and hold "+" on the IR

inspect that file on your desktop later and delete the unwanted files

Interesting ... I did not expect that free downloads from last.fm work

this intentional or just a loophole. :)

But I'm not sure if remote MP3s in playlists really are a good idea.
Keep in mind that every time you play that playlist, every song has to
be downloaded in real time, over and over again. That's quite a waste of
internet bandwidth, and the owner of the server you are downloading from
might even have to pay for it.

(I had that case once when someone's Winamp downloaded one of my radio
shows again and again until I finally kicked him out with an HTTP 403
status, assuming that he must have accidentally had his office PC on
repeat when he left for the weekend. A few minutes later I received an
email from a guy who apologized a lot and no, it was not by mistake, he
actually liked it so much that he had played it on repeat the whole day.
:D But he had not been aware that he was repeatedly pulling it from my
server.)

Can't you just download the files and play them locally?

The SB will support anything you tell it to, since it is basically just
a display and a DAC. Your problem would be to collect all the metadata
from "the cloud" by polling the different APIs, which is not even
possible for all services.

As snarlydwarf said, on last.fm for example possible streams include
"User X's favorites", "Artists similar to artist Y", or "Songs tagged
with Z", where you can substitute -any- user name, artist name, or
keyword for X, Y, and Z. You can figure out that a complete list of
every possible stream would contain thousands, if not millions of
entries and would not get you anywhere.

Cool, thanks again. According to a quick statistic of my music library
16% of the track titles are longer than 24 characters, and 5% are longer
than 34 characters. So the Touch would have to scroll (or truncate, if

But there seems to be some wasted vertical space - maybe it would be

I had to learn that when I bought my first ink jet printer. I knew
exactly which model I wanted to buy, I just wanted it to become a bit
cheaper. But instead of that it was discontinued, and a follow-up model
was released at exactly the same price.

Another thing I observed is that at the end of a product's life the
street price might even rise again. Kind of logical if you think about
it because the cheapest dealers will get rid of their stock first, but
surprising if you expect the price to gow down continually. So anybody
who still wants a new Classic should probably not wait until the last
minute.
