The workaround would be to go for the headphone amplifier – they are

Sorry if this is a naive question, but would it be possible to modify
SBS to get its stream using the UE Smart Radio server rather than
mysb.com? If so, should this be our ask from Logitech?

Unknown. But it could be the saving grace for SqueezeBox players going
forward. Perhaps a UE emulation plugin on LMS that could share the
online streams with SB hardware players? But even if doable at all, at
what cost to SB features/functions? Sync? Paid services? Transcoding?
Who knows. many, many questions remain.

The product range must run the whole gamut from inexpensive table radios
to hifi and high end connectivity .
The system synergy is the real strength of the squeezebox idea ,Even
audiophiles have zones that would not require high end.
For people that already have all DAC capacity they ever need I suggest a
novelty a digital,out only box ,spdif,ToS,USB,hdmi small form-factor,
not obscenely expensive as that is not necessary for a good enough
digital transport .
And the analog aficionados would want one with built in high end DAC .
And what about a good headphone output in some model ?

Moos Man,

This is a great idea to think about.

I would may be add few other questions to this in order to see the
future.
The community is the place where owners of already purchased devices are
and might be not your future first customers.
The real question is where the market is? And who are your future
customers?

Some years back SlimDevices had technology advantages and unique
opportunity, but is it still true today? This forum is full of
discussions and comparisons and as you can find out - many alternatives
are available now from companies like e.g. Sonos, Philips and of course
Apple.
All of them have great set of alternatives and all of them are easy to
use out of the box, what was a bit different for SlimDevices.

Logitech is pursuing two monetization streams: devices sales and content
usage based - this is a major reason why all new devices are connected
to Logitech servers. Content usage based model is not new and already
well developed by e.g. Apple, followed by Google, Amazon, Sony and many
others (with different success rate !).
Logitec has made clear decision to move to easy-to-use and no
knowledge required segment – this is a volume strategy most likely with
low cost of the product to maximize the profit. It is what Logitech is
good at with ability to keep great quality standards - typing on
Logitech Keyboard and using Logitech mouse ;-)

What business model and monetization are you going to follow? Is it a
device sales? Would you be able to generate enough revenue to keep
network infrastructure up and running?

Would you go for advanced enthusiast “community” approach? How many
competitors are there already?

As the food for thoughts: e.g. companies like Denon, Onkyo and many
others have Network radio in their offering and rely mainly on device
sales leaving network/traffic related monetization aside receiving
only small royalty (guess based on indirect information) from content
providers like Spotify in case user has paid subscription.

I'm not sure what sort of evidence of size/passion you're seeking. I
think a perusal of these forums certainly confirms a passion for the

There is every reason to speculate, we have no official communication of

sensible reaction to the environment that many external developers have
created.

So we get what we reap, the community can take over this environment,

Blaming the situation on external developers it quite a stretch, and for
that matter the most commonly used software players was released by Slim
Devices/Logitech them selves, if anything I beleive the external
developers have helped hardware sales.
But I do agree the UE Radio is a sensible reaction, my impression of the

that most of those Radios only rarely if ever connect to LMS (actual

my impressions is correct it makes perfect sense to streamline the

I don't blame the situation on external developers but the strategy (or
lack of) from Logitech. There was no protection of Logitech value,
consequently no business case. As soon as derivation of players
appeared on third party software products, there was an inevitable issue
for Logitech. I have no issue with these developers they did what is
natural, but it was bound to have consequences. I wouldn't invest in a
business that has no protected intellectual property anymore. The gate

Logitech apparently thought that there was a business case since they
forked over $20 million for the concept and the brand, what has changed
since then has nothing to do with the protection of their intellectual
property so I fail to see your line of reasoning. Software players were
available before their purchase so no difference there, and they've
never generated any direct revenue.

The third party player apps are targeting a different use case than the
Squeezebox hardware, they aren't competing, Logitech doesn't have a
portable offering, instead the Logitech hardware and third party apps
are working in a symbiosis making the Squeezebox hardware even more
attractive. The number of people who get a smart phone Squeezebox app
and put it in a docking station instead of getting a real hardware
Squeezebox is not significant, people use these third party players to
listen to their LMS music in rooms/contexts where Logitech doesn't offer
a suitable hardware. Also, even if they would compete, Logitech would
get an extremely attractive docking station solution if they produced
and sold a great iPhone/Android docking station to be used with these
third party player apps.

An iPod Touch + good docking station is definitely more expensive and
more ugly than a Squeezebox Radio, so it's not even a cheap solution,
unless you already have a spare iPod Touch to always have in the docking
station.

Some tinkering is going on in the dimly lit dens of enthusiasts,
seriously doubt that it has made a noticeable dent in the hardware sales
for Logitech though.

As of now I don't think there are any software players that fully
emulate their hardware counterparts, especially when it comes to the
increasingly popular online music services, Logitech didn't give it all
away.

Seriously, look at the major changes in the way people listen to music
during the last 5 years, isn't that a more likely culprit behind
Logitech changing direction, rather than some hobbyists (who often own
quite a lot of SB HW) and a few garage companies messing with software
players.

Don't agree, at least the iPod system can be connected to a quality

I agree with all you said, but this…
Frankly the Radio will not win a beauty contest, esp. with its
microscopic low-quality display (heck, the Boom was a bit awkward
looking too.)
A Radio is better designed than an iThing as a player, because it has
physical buttons, remote. And it can sync, so it functions better (in
this respect.) But I wouldn't say it has the edge esthetically.

Linn's future is tied to excellent audio quality and audiophile users
which doesn't necessarily mean streaming, whole house audio and
excellent support for premium streaming services or easy access to music

However, if your main interest is great audio quality and everything

Linn do achieve whole house synchronised audio, if you can afford their
devices. They also support AirPlay so you can get your streamed
services from an iThing, or a Mac. The issue is UPNP and cost.

However one of the users has been writing a server, which allows a
great approach to flexible music library searching, Minimserver is
definitely one of the better approaches to music library searching. I
think it is significantly better than LMS. It allows loads of variety
on custom tagging, multiple tagging etc. The writer has akenn interest
in classical music, and has designed great flexibility to support
appropriate structures.

The cost is is still an issue for most people. Whole house audio does
require different types of element, both physically and cost wise. I am
looking at AirPlay on the new Apple Express units (only 44 16bit) as a
stop gap.

The lack of repair for Logitech stuff is my problem (over the years I
spent over 1000 on their products). I have a boom that the knob
doesn't work anymore. Last year an SB3 died, replaced two SB3 power
supplies. One of my remaining SB3s has a display fault that's
intermittent. Logitech, unlike all the rest of my hifi stuff doesn't do
repairs. I obviously don't fit their business model. I hope the
engineers that gave us all the good times find good career paths, they
had commitment to a cause.

tagging, multiple tagging etc. The writer has akenn interest in
classical music, and has designed great flexibility to support
 appropriate structures.

Thanks, I didn't know of minimserver, definitely sounds like something
worth taking a look at.

This is a problem for me also. I use the SB3 exclusively to access
Pandora, Rhapsody and Internet radio. None of these would be available
if mysqueezebox.com went away.

Because you are not alone there are no plans to shut down mysb.com.

Yeah, but there were no announced plans to EOL the Squeezebox line
either. In fact, has there been an official announcement at all? And
yet we all know that this has happened.

Having no plans to shut down mysb.com is not the same thing as
Logitech commits to keeping mysb.com operational until at least January
1, 2020.

I think the real question is what will happen if, for example, Spotify
changes their API and updates are needed on the MySB side to keep it
active. Will the music services just all fade away one by one as this
happens? LMA has already suffered this fate...

This is the most official I've found:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/Logitech-UE-Smart-Radio/td-p/884530

Doesn't really say much except for that they plan to continue supporting
Squeezeboxes and continue making it provide you access to a rich world
of music. If you read between the lines one interpretation which
matches what mherger has said is that they don't have any plans to
shutdown mysqueezebox.com in the near future.

My personal interpretation is that there isn't any need to worry for the
next year or two while significant amount of devices are still under
warranty period.
I don't think it's likely that mysqueezebox.com will be running 2020 and
still be compatible with the firmware in a Squeezebox Classic, but
that's just my very personal guess.

Regarding Squeezebox, there wasn't any official announcement before the
shutdown, but honestly people have been talking about Logitech shutting
down Squeezebox for the last 1-2 years on this forum, so even if it came
as a surprise I think it's something we have all feared for quite some
time.

No reason to speculate, the future will show us what will happen, nobody
knows at the moment, not even people within Logitech.

There is probably more likely that Logitech will spend maintenance
resources to implement API changes for premium services like Spotify,
Pandora, Rhapsody than doing it for LMA.

[slim] Paid music services over Squeezebox players in the future- is this gonna discontinue?

2012-09-08 Thread ARTMU

I am trying to figure out what the Logitech is planning to do with all
of us who are using Squeezeboxes and are paying for services like
Spotify, MOG, premium Pandora, Rhapsody etc. Logic would suggest that
Logitech was/is receiving some profits from these companies for allowing
them to stream music over SB. Such users would have to cancel accounts
being abandoned by Logi support. That means lost money for Logitech and
this music services. Does anyone know if these services will stay with
us even Logitech support will be gone?
If this is gonna happen I would rather invest in good quality network
enabled AV receiver that has similar functionality to SB, and will let
me play paid services. I believe these guys from Logitech lost their
minds.
