I use my Dell Axim PDA. I use the Java EWE tool that someone has written to control it rather than the web browser interface. If you don't mind something larger, you could always check out a tablet PC. You can usually find old Fujitsu Stylistic touchpads with a pentium III 400 MHz for under $200 on ebay. -- NWP NWP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3730 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24180 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Put Firefox or Opera on it though because I hear a lot of the AJAX stuff in the 770 doesn't work well in IE. Whoa, that's a heck of a thought. I had no idea you could pick up a touchscreen that cheap. Do you have one? Anyone have one? Anyone used it for controlling slimserver? If it's a great slim remote I would mostly care less if it did anything else well... I still have a dream of having a dedicated slim kiosk that would sit next to the squeezebox and could run a slick UI (my allegiance is, unsurprisingly, to the Nokia770). The 770 itself is not a good option for that role (it's a handheld, not something to view from across the room). cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24180 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

They are good for the bartop though. One of the problems with buying a used unit like this is that you can't really expect long battery life. He leaves them plugged in when using them. I understand your allegiance to the 770, but if they aren't hooking you up with some free stuff by now after you've indirectly sold so many units for them (I know my brother bought one just to use as a squeezebox controller because of your skin), it may be time to rethink that allegiance and rename your skin. If you are looking for something even cheaper, here's a really good thread on the Jornada that can supposedly be bought off ebay for $120-140ish and run linux: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=threadid=1811688 I'm not sure how it would do with the nokia 700 skin because of the AJAX calls, but if you want a very cheap handheld I recommend reading the thread - there's a lot of good info in there. -- NWP NWP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3730 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24180 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Anything to use to control the player, other than Nokia 770?
Sorry, I mistyped. I meant I had allegiance to my Nokia770 skin, not to the 770 itself (I edited it after I posted the comment). I'm impressed with the effort and the concept of the 770, but it's a far from perfect device. I have considered that Nokia770 isn't probably the best name for the skin since it works so well on standard PCs (and apparently even works on a PSP). The downside of renaming it would be that I wouldn't have such a good excuse not to support IE. You have no idea how much more fun it is to write a web interface when not having to deal with the lousy quirks of Internet Exploder. Yeah, I'm thinking bartop for the stylistic. It'd always be plugged in and dedicated to controlling the squeezebox (I'm thinking firefox in full-screen mode). With those tablets that cheap, it's going to be hard to resist not getting one at some point. How did you feel about screen clarity/resolution? Also, I'm assuming I could stick an 802.11g PCMCIA card in one? One more important question about those stylistic pads: do they make noise? I'm assuming they have a fan (and a HD), but in your experience were they quiet? cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24180 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Yeah, it doesn't have built in wireless, so you have to stick in a PCMCIA card. One thing that annoys me about it is the lack of a keyboard port. Supposedly there is a docking station that you can hook a keyboard into, but my friend never has that out and just uses an on-screen keyboard. Then again, if you are just going to use it to control music, you don't really need a keyboard. btw: I designed the browseamp skin I mentioned to you the other day specifically for the Stylistic. In fact, it's been tough to get him to switch to slimserver because he's already gotten too comfortable controlling his music with that. bklaas Wrote: One more important question about those stylistic pads: do they make noise? [slim] Re: Anything to use to control the player, other than Nokia 770?
Good stuff...800x600 would look fantastic with the Nokia770 skin (the 770 is 800 pixels wide as well, and my UI design decisions are all based on an 800 pixel wide screen). This will be an interesting thing to check out...luckily I'm in no hurry so I can wait a few months and see if these ever drop into the impulse buy range. Sub-$200 is pretty darn close though... #!/ben -- bklaas bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24180 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

lovemov Wrote: I think Nokia 770 is very nice, but all reviews said it's slow. I like the size, display, etc. Is there any other choices? I don't have a 770, but all the AJAX work that Ben Klaas (770 skin developer) has put in should make using it pretty tolerable with minimal page reloads. The PSP would provide a pretty similar experience to the 770, I imagine. Other than that, just about anything with a web browser should work. Unfortunately, most PDAs are going to be pretty slow. I heard real good things about the responsiveness of TelCanto for PDAs a while back but don't know about the status of its support for the latest versions of Slimserver.
