[slim] Re: SB3 locking when wirelessly connected

2006-02-04 Thread SteveL

Update on the originally reported problem is that I have now received a
replacement unit and am pleased to say it appears to work faultlessly.

Thus the SB3 freezeing when used in wireless mode appears to have been
a fault with the actual SB3 box (or else the power supply, as someone
eluded to in an earlier post).

Hope this can be of some use to anyone else suffering the same (but
apparantly quite rare) problems.

same here Steve. When wireless the SB3 plays a few songs then freezes.
Unplugging it is the only thing you can do. My laptop has no problem
using this wireless network. When plugged via ethernet the SB3 does not
crash. I agree a replacement is probably needed.

2006-01-29 Thread Charles

I have had the same exact problems for about a week plus another.
I have a flawless wireless system for laptops but slimbox freezes.

The additional problem: mine has a power transformer that seems to be
arcing. The entire electrical circuit carries the cracking and popping
to other electrical devices (radios) on the same circuit when slimdevice
is plugged in. Some worry here about a fire danger.

Could the defective power supply also have caused the wireless problems
to develop?

Fluorescent lighting, cordless phones, neighbors cordless phones, even
cell phones, large antennas, poor electrical insulation, microwaves,
wireless keyboards and mice, and on and on. A ton of stuff generates RF
that can cause interference. Surely there's a tool out there to measure
it's level around the home. Perhaps measure at various time throughout
the day. Personally, I jack in whenever possible.

Turns out the issues with SqueezeNetwork are known and are being worked
on:

A byproduct of the explosive growth of our favourite toy, I guess! :-)

But if you indicate that both players go down at the same time, it
would seem to indicate wireless issues.

No, I only thought about the heater because the serious connection
problem started when it got cold recently. From other posts in here,
it sounds like my problem is also with the network. Even if the
connection on both SB's drop, I can still surf the net wirelessly. And
thinking about it, the problems did start some time ago but it's only
gotten pretty bad recently.

Hopefully the new machines will get rid of the load problems.

2006-01-09 Thread SteveL

Hi Bob

no resolution yet, but now persuing idea of getting replacement SB3
unit. Best I can ascertain is that SB3 crashes on wireless connection
once its been on for a while got warm. Works fine for half an album
on start-up from cold, then crashes. Crashes then more frequent after
power down/up (usually first track). May sound unusual, but I can't
see any other pattern other than this. However, pop an ethernet cable
in and it'll happily play all night.

Taking a little consolation from fact that this particular issue seems
rare. You are only other reported instance that I've seen, so fingers
crossed its just a Friday afternoon box which can be replaced.

Will post if this resolves it or anything if anything comes to light in
the meantime.

Steve

Heaters here tend to be the fan blowers which take the temp up to about
20 deg celcius or so. The side effect of these is that the humidity
then drops to 30 dgrees or so if the humidifier isn't on. That said,
I'm sure lots of SB users are probably usign SB's in these conditions
already. Not very knowlegeable about electricity but if the heater
generates a field, would it be any different to another electrical
product? I had thought about this possibility as the heater was being
used at the same time but am not so sure about the cause/ effect
relationship.

I am having similar problems. SB3 runs for various lengths of time and
then locks up. As with your the only way to kick start it is to turn
the power off.

This morning it ran un-interupted for some 5 hours (Van Morrison
session while I painted the walls and ceiling of our front room). Early
afternoon - lock up, which has been repeated regularly. Wireless
signal strength seems to fluctuate, high of 90 - low of 33%. Not sure
why.

We have wireles phones and neigbours. The phones I can deal with...

I would be interested to know if you manage a solution.

thanks Neil, but no go on either channel - still crashing (I tried most
channels several days ago). I've no unusual wireless interference in
the house and all don't suffer issues with other wireless devices.

Enough time wasted trying to resolve this - time to email support. At
the end of the day, if the device crashes all the time, its plain and
simple faulty, regardless of cause (firmware, hardware or an
oversensivity to microwave ovens).

[slim] Re: SB3 locking when wirelessly connected

2006-01-05 Thread TonyP

I have exactly the same problem with two SB3's I got for Christmas.
Wired works like a dream as soon as I try wireless I have no end of
problems. Crashes, as you have experienced, and also frequent factory
reset where it looses its MAC address something I have hardly ever come
across. I am getting very low signal strength at the devices (only one
room from the router in each case) so in desperation I have moved one
of them right next to the wireless router and still I see the message
Connecting to wireless network... every minute or so and sometimes it
does and sometimes it doesn't - and that’s with 100% signal strength !

I have tried changing channel with no obvious improvement as well as
some good suggestions from the good folk on this forum but have now run
out of ideas.

Sorry I could not have given you the solution to your problem but
thought you’d like to know you are not alone...

[slim] Re: SB3 locking when wirelessly connected

2006-01-02 Thread SteveL

many thanks for the suggestions, but sadly still drawing a blank. I run
other wireless connections to the same router with no issue. No
obvious nearby items which would interfere such as cordless phones +
I'd tried range of the wireless channels on the router just in case
(01-13).

SB3 also crashes when SB3 wirelessly linked to SlimNetwork (with PC
switched off), so this presumably elmates SlimServer as a suspect.

This leaves SB3 and Netgear DG834G as possible sources of problem. As
the latter works fine with other devices, I must assume the SB3 is the
guilty party (especially as it is demonstrating a tendancy to crash),
either due to v28 firmware issue, else a fauly box.

Can anyone from SlimDevices offer some help or suggestions on this one
please ?

Thanks Michael, but unfortunately no joy. No turbo features on the NG
DG834G to switch off (its a straight 54Mbps B/G router), and the router
status hyperlink lists as it one that works. I just tried enbling
WPA-TKIP, as router status list shows that as known working, but SB3
crashed again, 1:27 into second track.

Dropped connections wouldn't be so bad, as I could get some diagnostic
software on the case, but the SB3 crashing is making diagnosis a little
difficult.

much appreciated
