I do this all the time and find it very fast. Also fast with ipeng on

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-10-18 Thread Line

Bought this magnificent app and use it constantly. Thanks pippin. If I
could nitpick, a darker theme may provide for a less stark contrast
between the screen border and the UI. But regardless A+

I had always wanted to know which disc number a current track came from
but knew it would take up a bit of space to achieve it on ipeng for
iPhone. Now that we have more real estate perhaps this can become a
reality?

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-10-15 Thread Micro

Very nice app here. I have also given five stars. I have some minor
recommendations for future versions. First is the ability to have
preset combinations of players, similar to what some people do with
automated mood lighting in the home. I have five boxes and sometimes I
want to play my music on different combinations of these players and it
would be good to be able to do so from the player pull down. Second
recommendation - make the on and off icons more distriinct for players.
In fact, I'm not real crazy about the square icons at all. I like the
image of the player type with the on "halo" the best. It seems like
that was in a iphone previous version and then removed. Third - I
wouldn't mind a darker background for some reason also. Very picky
comment there. The Sonos background is a nice blue.

Again, very nice job on this app. I was just about to buy a Sonos.

love it - this is in a totally different league from the standard iPeng
app - and that I thought was brilliant. It worked straight out the box.
There is just so much additional functionality that takes a few moments
to readjust to - but it is so inuative. You keep finding extra ways of
doing things.
Pippin - you have taken it to a new level. This has to be the top app
for any Squeezebox owning ipad owner. You can sleep well tonight - no

I don't doubt you on this, but it does make me feel a little
disappointed. I've been telling folks who have admired my iPad to
"wait for the retina release next year". But thinking that through,
that would be an awful lot of pixels to pump for a 1Ghz device,
wouldn't it. Something like 1920x1200 or more. I guess I'll stop
recommending that folks hold their breath.

Hey, this is the App Store. You will get to buy it whenever Apple likes
to approve it, not a lot I can do about it.
Price is $9.99 like the iPhone version and since there are no discounts
on the App Store it's the same for everybody. It's not a free upgrade to
the iPhone version, it's a separate App.

Hm, then I don't fully understand why you need volume up/down buttons.
I mean, after all the volume is fixed, the only reason I'm aware of for
still wanting volume changes is that you have a plugin that interprets
them to control an amp while the SB's volume stays fixed.
There are three of these I'm aware of (and that work with iPeng), two
for Denon amps that directly control the volume (so you keep the
slider) and then there's IRBlaster which captures up/down changes and
sends them to the amplifier.
iPeng will NOT manipulate the volume value for a SB that is set to
fixed volume because this would confuse the group volume control and
there is little sense in it anyway. Yet I am NOT sure whether this also
applies to the Touch if the fixed volume is being set by a plugin, I
don't know how that mechanism works.

OK, let me clarify.

Today I am have my Touch volume fixed to 100% and I control the amp with
the amp remote.

What I would like to be abel to do is fix the digital out volume of the
Touch to 100% and have the IR emitter connected to the Touch blast the
volume up or volume down signals for the amp volume when the volume is
changed on the iPeng iPad.

I though this was what the IRBlaster plugin did, no?

I use the Touch, will the plugin work with it. Also I have fixed the

IRBlaster is a plugin that runs an IR emitter from the headphone jack
of the Squeezebox Classic, Transporter or Boom.
Have a look at the 3rd party plugins section.
If you just need a way to change the volume you could just enable the
plugin and enter _something_ for the volume change command. The plugin
will then report to iPeng that it's accepting volume changes even
though the actual volume is fixed to 100%.
Which plugin are you using to control your amp?

Don't exactly know what you mean by "screen allocation" in this case.
Both Sonos and Remote don't really change the screen layout while you
browse. Or do you mean "same" as in compared to the iPhone App?
Compared to the iPhone App it's different, don't like the cheap way
Sonos did it. Don't like microfiche-sized artwork either :D

Umm...yes.
Well, Spotify works.
There is one limitation iPeng for iPad has and that is that some of the
cool stuff I did not yet show doesn't work with some legacy code meaning
the legacy stuff will look more like in iPeng for iPhone.

"legacy stuff" in this case means anything that is being rendered using
standard-XMLBrowser menus and this means: "Apps", "Music Sources" and
"Internet Radio" for server versions prior to 7.4 and the Spotify
plugin with server versions prior to 7.6.

In short: If it should be really cool you'll need SBS 7.6. There's
little way around it. I don't plan to make a big development effort for
a menu that's only being used for Spotify and for an outgoing software
generation and there is no way to make the new stuff work on the old
server versions, Triode and I tried this for a looong time.

Hard to say. Hardcore-iPad-only programming on top of "iPeng for
iPhone" was maybe three months. But I did already do a lot of the
basics in the last iPeng version, which already supports different
screen and artwork sizes and the like.
I also did a "prototype" version earlier this year which also took
several weeks to develop but which I later scrapped. It was intended to
be part of a universal "lite" version for the "normal" iPeng but simply
looked too bad.

I think it's better.
Although I dropped "Play shuffled" from playlists and albums while
Remote still has it :). But you don't really need it in iPeng for iPad

One feature that will be new to Squeezebox Remotes will have to wait
until 1.1 but I don't say which one. Since it's new you're not going to
miss it and while Remote has it it's useless there.

Well Done Pippin! I thought it will be more around the end of the
calendar year when you will be realing the iPad version. That is what I
gathered when I last checked the Squeezebox forums about 2 months back.
How long did it take you to develop it?

Can you tell us more about how the extra screen spac have been
utilised? Is anything like the new iTunes App for iPad?

Will you post here when it is released by Apple to inform us.

Yeah, the mail app is terrible if you have a mailbox with lots of
folders, but not as bad as the stock Android one. OTOH on Android you
have a choice to install a free alternative that does cater to people
with multi-G mailboxes ;)

I'd also really really like a way to cross browser sync bookmarks and tabs.

Actually I did think about zooming on the screen saver screen but then
decided against it for now.
Generally I'd say: as big as you can get them. The server scales fine
and if I add zooming in 1.1 or so at least 1024x1024 may make sense.
Also: you never know what iPad 2.0 will look like. Retina Display?

iPads got a native resolution of 1024*768.
Given that covers can fill the full width it looks like 768*768 makes
sense.

2000*2000 might make sense, if iPeng sports zooming on the
screensafer-screen :D

Ok, maybe let's switch the topic a bit to "how does it look like" ;)

Since it's now with Apple waiting for approval I have to keep my
promise to start leaking some picture.

However, since it's early and Apple's reviews can be long these days
and they might find something they don't like (icons being too similar
to iPeng for iPhone, whatever) I have to start slow.

So here's the most un-exiting screen shot I could find, the Cover
Screen Saver.
Ok, actually when _live_ it's not that unexciting since it gives you a

surprises in here.

Let's use this thread to discuss how you would like iPeng on iPad to
look like and what features you want.

Geez, so that's the problem? You did see the smiley at the end of that
line, did you? Or perhaps it didn't make it through to the forum (I'm an
e-mail list reader).

"If pippin makes too much on the iphone app he may not bother finishing
the ipad version ;)"

It's supposed to signal that one shouldn't take the preceding remark too
seriously: It was a joke...

And a pretty obvious one, if you ask me...

have been something in the tone of voice in your first 2 posts. Nobody
tells you you're a scraper because you're not buying both of Pippin's

So because I'll only be buying the Ipeng for iPad as well as Squeezepad
(which I already bought) and of course an Android app when I get my
phone, for some reason I deserve this whole group falling over me for
being a cheapskate.

Don't forget to buy Squeezey as well, guys!

Please, let's stop this argument, everyone has to do their own choice.

If someone wants to hold on to their money, that is fine, everyone have
to choose for themselves.

I think it's important to get people to realize that compared to all
other stuff they get every day without thinking much, $10 for an app
might not be that much, but it's still their choice. We shouldn't blame
and question anyone that prefers to wait, that's their choice.

For some strange reason, many people think $50 for a piece of hardware
that doesn't change your life much is very cheap but $10 for software
that completely change your Squeezebox experience is suddenly
expensive. As a developer I have a hard time understanding this but I
also know I sometimes tend to have thoughts like this myself as a
consumer.

I think this is the important thing.

Most(all?) third party developers do get encouraged when someone is
willing to show them their appreciation through some economical support
or even just through some fancy words. So if you think someone has done
something great and you would love them to continue doing similar
things in the future, this might be worth a lot more than $10 to you.
Applications like iPeng and SqueezePad and other third party
plugins/applets have changed the Squeezebox experience a lot for me and
I would like all third party developers to continue doing this in the
future. Especially since the history shows that Logitech is focused on
the core functionality and most extras that makes the products shine
comes from third party developers. Compared to other iPhone/iPad apps,
$10 might seem expensive, but as I look at it I pay for the improvement
of the Squeezebox system and to encourage future development and in this
context $10 is a drop in the sea.

As and example, for $10 in Sweden I get a single meal of food on a
cheap restaurant, in comparison, a third party software that completely
changes my Squeezebox experience every day is worth a LOT more than
that. The meal of food will be forgotten next day but the third party
software and its developer will continue to change my music discovery
experience today and in the future.

Still, if some people prefer to wait and don't want to "waste" any
money on encouragement, we should accept that.

For what IPENG does $12.50 in Australia is a bargain.
What ever the IPAD app cost i'm sure it will also be a bargain,I will
buy an ipad purely to run IPENG as it will give me a SOOLOOS like
interface minus the $20 000 price tag.
It if was easy we would all be writting great apps, Pippin deserves to

Wow !!!

Let's see here - the guy has AT LEAST one squeezebox ($300) and he has
an iPad (at least $500), plus the sales tax associated with these
purchases. So now we're talking close to $1,000.

And he is agonizing about spending an extra $10 ??

I can assure you that Pippin has not quit his day job to develop his
iPeng app. The revenue he has seen in no way approaches the time,
effort and skills needed to develop an essential app for the complete
squeezebox experience.

I use the current iPeng app on the iPad and it works great. It's
sophistication far exceeds any competing apps. And I also look forward
to upgrading when the iPad only app is published.

I consider it an honor to be able to buy BOTH the current iPeng for
iPhone and the upcoming app just for the iPad. This encourages
continued development and it shows my appreciation for great apps.

That's a little below the belt ain't it? I wouldn't dare to make
statements in regard to how many iPengs have been sold world-wide, but
I'd guess it's closer to 1000 than to 1. If you look at the way
the app has been designed and how it's been perfected, you just know
there is a lot of development in this app. Even if he did earn €20.000
by selling this app, in my opinion, that ain't too much. There are
plenty of guys in the appstore developing useless apps, that are poorly
designed and shameless copies of concepts designed by others in years
gone by, who earn a whole lot more by selling their apps.

And iPad is even more scarce, so I'm guessing iPeng HD will deliver
even less revenues to the developer. Although ofcourse, most of the
knowledge that has been gathered while building iPeng for iPhone can be
reused, so development time is probably less too. At the same time,
knowing the way Pippin seems to work, he is working hard on finding a
smart way for the UI that utilizes the iPad's larger screen. I'm
guessing it will be a totally different experience from Squeezepad too,
which works fine, but I still find myself using my iPeng everytime
because SP doesn't use the large screen in a smart way. Almost
demanding an upgrade from iPhone to iPad seems a bit odd in that sense:
it will be a totally different app.

One encourages production of excellent apps by buying what one wants and
needs, not by throwing money around regardless. I already bought the
Squeezepad app which works but isn't very polished. I'm expecting ipeng
to be a lot better.

Sorry, I'm not going to buy an iphone app, when an ipad app is -
hopefully - just around the corner.

Of course, you're free to do want you want with your money. If pippin
makes too much on the iphone app he may not bother finishing the ipad
version ;)

apps.
We are really not talking about that much money, do you plan this much
also when getting a new CD or eating at a restaurant ?

There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of development hours behind these
apps, paying $10 extra isn't really that much to show your
appreciation.

Well, there's a lot of difference and additional work between an iPhone
and an iPad app. The UIs are completely different.
Plus it won't really help the performance of bot apps if you throw in
tons of branching for completely different user interfaces.

So yes, it will be a separate app.

Apple finally got me to buy one of their products so I'm here eyeing
this ipeng program...

I want to give you my money, but it seems iphone/ipad developers sell
their ipad offerings as a separate app. If that's the case with ipeng
I'll end up paying for two apps when I really only want the ipad version.

If I buy the iphone version now, will I be able to upgrade to the ipad
version without paying for a whole new program?

Or should I just wait and use squeezepad in the mean time?

Really? Honestly: I find that one primitive. It's just a side-by-side

OK, but that has nothing to do with artwork.
What iPeng does is check the albums table to see whether the albums
have changed.

Only after a rescan of the library (all artwork) and when you start the
app (before artwork shows up at all).
After that it doesn't, it reads them fully out of the iPhone's cache.

Now I'm not one to start argueing with you on what is and what is not
stored on the iPhone within the app you developed yourself. But I moved
from a Synology DS207+ to a DS210+ and, amongst other improvements,
experienced a definate improvement in artwork loading-times. On the old
server, even if the albumlist was shown for seconds, artwork wasn't
shown, this isn't the case anymore.

So even if it stores artwork on the phone itself, there must be some
request going to the server prior to showing the artwork? :S

Most of my music has no cover art, so I'd hate to slow things down just
to produce empty boxes.

Not sure how many others have the same situation, but that's my '2

Actually that's usually not a server issue since iPeng caches the
artwork on the device.
The problem here is that scrolling on an iThingy takes >90% of the CPU
power and prioritizes so much higher than the main thread that you have
no chance to bring in artwork from the flash disc and it's simply soo

iPad has more memory (but will use bigger artwork so this will probably
offset it) and also, it only applies to scrolling.

I think pages of artwork like that would be cool but it should be an
option and not the only way to browse.

Sometimes i don't know exactly what i want to hear and i like to flip
through covers and browse. Sometimes i know what i want so give me
quick text menus and precise search options.

2010-08-04 Thread Jeff Flowerday

Bringing up a page of album art like that would be way too slow. The
speed squeezebox server can serve the art seems to be an issue. Just
look at the art being populated when you bring up the 5 album under an
artist using the current iPeng.

You would have to wait 5 seconds for a page of art just load at the
least.

Performance should be the #1 goal, IMO.

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-08-04 Thread tbowland

There are two things on my mind related to the additional real estate
available on the iPad.

Browsing/Selecting by album art - I'm very visual and when I browse
as opposed to look for something specific I do it in a very visual
ways
Lots of big album art and not so much text.

What room am I controlling? - For the women of the world that will use
this new iPad app
(thanks to the iPad form factor and ease of use that number has the
potential to go way up)
I need to know what I'm controlling at a glance rather than dig/slid
through pages
and pages to see if I'm inadvertently going to turn the music on or up
in another room. Most of us will put up with making that mistake but
alot
of women will just consider it not easy enough, not usable.

Ah. You mean the grey bar the iPad puts in place of the status bar? No
influence on that one.
Like the top one here:

If it's immediately on top of your artwork chances are that it's
actually PART of your artwork.

Not the status bar - it's a grey bar that is at the top of the screen
(not the tippy top where the status bar is) - it is on top of the album
art...

My iPeng crashed at one point... Maybe it's some kinda residual grey
bar?
