I think it's a big mistake that SD doesn't offer a similar package. Have an amp built in solves a lot of problems. Less wiring, no hassle trying to get the amp top switch on/off with the SB. Integrated volume control... I know there are solutions for all these problems. I tried most of them. I have powered studio monitors switched with the ampswitch plugin in the living room. Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver
You are correct in understanding that you need either powered speakers or an amp between a SBR and passive speakers. If you search these forums you will see posts about very efficient digital amplifiers that are as small, or smaller, than a SBR. These would work well for your application and wouldn't have to be managed as you would set the volume of the amp when you install it, then control music volume with the SBC. There are a few forum posts that ask Slimdevices/Logitech to consider making a device that has an integrated amp that you can directly attach passive speakers to but there is no feedback to determine if this is being considered. Sonos and Cisco/Linksys offer devices that do this so market place realities may drive them to a decision. I know that I would be very interest in a SB3 (Classic) with an integrated, highly efficient, amp. -- Kiwi Kiwi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver
For my in-ceiling speakers I use a simple AudioSource AMP 100. It costs less than US$100 (check Amazon), is powerful enough to drive most in-ceiling speakers, and is good (but not audiophile) quality. It doesn't require any management. I just plug the SBR into the Input 2 inputs, turn it on, and set the volume to about the 1 o'clock position (you'll want to adjust depending on your speakers and desired volume level). The inputs are auto-sensing, so after 5-10 minutes with no signal from the SBR the amp goes into standby mode. In standby mode it still draws around 5w of power, and if that's more than you want to burn you can simply turn the amp off when you're done, and back on when you want to listen again. Alternatively you could get active (ie, powered) in-ceiling speakers instead of amplifier+passive speakers. One possible complication with that approach is ensuring that the line-level cable from the SBR to the speakers is as short as possible and routed in a way that it doesn't pick up a low frequency hum from nearby electrical wires. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver
Thanks for the quick replys. I agree building an Amp into the receiver would make this a no brainer in my purchasing decision. I will check out the AudioSource AMP 100 in the interim. Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver
Don't limit yourself to auto-sensing amps, especially because many of the T-class amps, such as the Sonic Impact T amp, are very efficient and draw very little power even when they are on (less than the AudioSource does in standby mode). A few months ago someone posted a link to a site where some company was selling a SBR that they had modified to include an amp. I can't find the thread now, but you might want to search for it. Personally I prefer separate components. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hello and Welcome to the Forum. It would really help to know your price range or budget? It also helps to know what they will be used for as well as what your expectations are? How many watts from the Receiver? They could be something as simple as a pair of AUDIOSOURCE ATC6DM, Proficient C605 In-Ceiling, or Proficient W660 In-Wall speakers and then there is going all the way up into speakers like the Thiel HigherPlane 1.2s. If it's low available power and only for background listening then I say go simple and cheap. Because background music is just that, something in the background. Where as listening to enjoy music and critical listening tends to require more expensive gear. After seeing my Vandersteen VSM-1s on the wall in my Media Room and the white VSM-1s on the walls in my living room, my neighbor bought a pair off of Audiogon in white and mounted them on the wall in the living room facing into the dining room for good sound in both rooms. Most people don't notice them on the wall unless they are right on top of them. As I said, there are tons of options and tons of speakers to chose from. So it really gets down to budget and what you expect from them. -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Oh and while you're getting wiring done...have Cat-5e network outlets in each room! Wireless issues are by far the biggest problem with these sorts of devices - and it's not these devices in particular, it's wireless in general. When it works, you don't think about it. But there are SO MANY ways for it to go wrong, and when it does, you are sometimes left with few options. The key question is what is your budget? There's quite a price range even for in-ceiling speakers. I have 2 pairs of Polk Audio RC60i in my kitchen/dining area, and they are okay for the low end of the price range (about US$100/pair from Amazon). After I bought them someone advised me that I'd be better off with 8 drivers, and he was probably right because my Polks are pretty weak on the bass frequencies. But with all the wood and glass cabinets, hard floors/counters/table, and cooking noises it's hardly an audiophile environment to begin with -- aubuti Nothing high-end, but music anywhere I want it. Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers
I purchased 3 pairs of Niles CM800HD about 8 years ago and they have served me very well. They are located in the kitchen, living room and outdoor rear deck (installed under a wall popout). They are sourced from the SB3 analog to my Parasound C2 zone 2 and are powered by an old Adcom GFA 2535 amp. I think I paid about $300 a pair. Looks like that model has been discontinued and been replaced by the CM830 for about the same price. Great to run those wires when everything is open, good luck.
