Re: [slim] Machine to use for LMS and Duet
Thanks to all of you again. I went back and reread all of the comments and I think I am beginning to get this. The Raspberry pi and the Dell Wyse are great suggestions. As I mentioned, I'll go the Raspberry pi / piCorePlayer and I won't worry about connection to mysb. I'll keep the Duet Controller. I have been rather old school with my audio set up -- my amplifier is early 1970's -- so I do have some work to do to get hip to the new technologies. Some of the lingo baffles me, eg: "client", "hat", "run ffs" etc. So as I get into my Raspberry pi / piCorePlayer launch you may see me back here again seeking your help. As Billy Strayhorn said "ever onward and upward." Thanks again. anglecard48's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71714 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114758 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Greg Erskine wrote: > > > I found a Duet not as good as a RPi with a DAC hat, but I haven't tested > a Duet with an external DAC, it may be as good or even better?? my defense of the duet receiver was strictly for non critical listening (extra room, etc). I do still like the controller despite phone/pad control apps. I prefer to use pcP as strictly LMS is for location considerations only My pCP server is sitting next to my router with players (touch, squeezeamp, radios, and yes receivers) located throughout the house. If you can set things up with your pCP (I prefer ethernet) adjacent to your kit, by all means, add a hat or go to a USB DAC and put the receiver in a box. Re: [slim] Machine to use for LMS and Duet
As you already have a Topping D30. Get LMS going on your "replacement device", using whatever OS you prefer. Get comfortable with it. Your system should function as does today. After a while, as a no cost option, plug the Topping D30 into the "replacement device". See if there is a change in sound quality. I found a Duet not as good as a RPi with a DAC hat, but I haven't tested a Duet with an external DAC, it may be as good or even better?? PiCorePlayer is an operating system specifically designed to be an LMS sever and a player, you don't need any other operating system for the Pi. I use Pi USB > Topping E30 DAC > active speakers. You don't need your receiver part of the Duet, you can use your controller part of the Duet to control piCorePlayer (all one word). Connecting your piCorePlayer to mysqueezebox.com is iffy, I don't think you would need mySB.com for anything other than Tidal. Yes' you would set up the Raspberry Pi using a web browser on any machine connected to your network, you don't need to connect a screen, mouse, keyboard to your Pi. *Server - LMS 8.2.0 *Pi4B 4GB/Argon one case/pCP v7.0.1 - 75K library, playlists & LMS cache on SSD (ntfs) *Study -* Pi4/pCP 7.0.1/Topping E30 DAC/Ruark MR1 Mk2 *Lounge* - Pi2/pCP 6.0.0 > HiFiBerry DIGI+ > AudioEngine DAC1 > AVI DM5 *Dining Room* - Pi3B/pCP/Bluetooth/Echo Show 8 *Garage* - DAC32 > Edifier speakers *Spares* - 2xTouch, 1xSB Radio. 1xSB3, 6xRPi kidstypike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10436 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114758 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks all of you. I have ordered a Raspberry Pi and will dive into the install and enjoyment next week I hope. I'd like and really appreciate your comments. Could I impose once more? I just want to summarize and have you check to see if I understand all this correctly. - I have an SB Duet in my living room (main listening room). - I do not have a PC to dedicate 24/7 in my main listening room (hifi system) to run LMS and need to remedy that situation. - I really only listen to streaming audio via Pandora and Internet radio stations (maybe a one-day-in-the-future task will be to digitize my LPs and stream them off a hard drive) -The Raspberry pi is the ideal hardware device (small, cool, quiet, capable, ships today, and inexpensive) that can work to operate my LMS with my Duet But... -piCore Player is a higher-level application than the native Squeezebox app that Duet uses, so I'll use piCore Player instead and will use my Duet only as a remote. I believe I can use my laptop's monitor and keyboard to set up my Raspberry pi via plugging into my router and looking up Raspberry pi IP address on the router. So I won't need a Raspberry keyboard and monitor. - There is a Raspberry pi OS and OS lite that is available from raspberrypi.org. It seems that one uses a micro sd card to get a download app from pc to Raspberry pi. - Once Raspberry pi is plugged in and operational, I will download LMS from Logitech Squeezebox and install it on the Raspberry pi. NOTE: one respondent instructed that: "If you want your server PC to also be a player, you install the "Local Player" plugin." I don't exactly know what that means. - Once the server is running, I'll download, install, and configure my piCorePlayer to "use this instance of LMS as its server" (I don't exactly know what that last part in quotes means). - piCore Player will appear on my LMS as a Squeezelite player called piCorePlayer Question 1: will I need my Squeezebox receiver? Question 2: Currently I am not able to connect my SB Duet Receiver or Controller to mysb. I have a post on the Duet stream. Will that cause problems when I attempt tp go the piCore Player route? Question 3: Currently I use a Topping DAC. Would I line into that DAC from my Raspberry pi? Or does Raspberry pi line in to the SB receiver and then line into the Topping DAC? My system consists of: Turntable -- ProJect CD Player -- Rotel Streamer -- SB Duet (LMS on MacBook Air when available) DAC -- Topping D30 Preamp -- Reference Line Preeminence One Amp -- SAE Mark 31B Speakers -- WOW1s Many, many thanks. anglecard48's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71714 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114758 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

A Dell/Wyse thin client is a good option too IMO. Great deal right now on a new Wyse 3040 with wifi on Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124785340328?hash=item1d0dc92fa8:g:VwoAAOSw931g1LUv That would rule out picoreplayer but it's x86_64, pick your distro of choice, my vote would be for Alpine Linux! sodface's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19057 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114758 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Machine to use for LMS and Duet
I, like many here, use a rpi running picoreplayer as a LMS server only. That is, squeezelite disabled. I have identical two systems, each on a rpi 3b+ with a USB HDD, and use Samba and freefilesync to manage a mirror of my music library (on my PC) on the rpi HDD. So, when I add a new "album" to my library I just run ffs, and rescan LMS. Like Paul mentioned, about $60USD, then add $50USD for a HDD or more if SS HDD Jim PS - A little off topic, but I also use the rpi/HDD as a backup for me PC files, also using ffs. That is, my photos, documents, etc. So, for your $ you also get another backup for your important files.
