Those were drives that Plextor didn't manufacture themselves, but rather just re-badged. Anyway, I never could get good rips without lots of errors with that combination. But I do think it was the drives' fault, not EZ-CDDA's. Since moving to Optarc drives (<$30 for OEM units!) I've been very happy. With new CDs, I get perfect rips that are identical to those produced by EAC, but in 1/10th the time. That's a hard call because one person's simplicity is another person's complexity. I don't think anyone has mentioned winamp yet. It's free, and a lot of people like it, though I don't. I've been lurking here just keeping up with things: Thanks to Gordon for recommending EZ-CDDA I've been having some problems with rubyripper since Ubuntu 10.04 and also had problems with my SATA DVD-ROM drive in my dual boot WindowsXP/EAC but EZ-CDDA has great tagging options (I particularly like Album mode) and is extremely fast - 1 minute 40 secs for a 10 track CD. It's not free but seems worth the price. I was just interested in reducing the network overhead for my wireless SB radio`s, by going FLAC (I understand that WMA lossless is transcoded to WAV, meaning a bigger overhead for the wireless network) If I could get a ripper/burner for FLAC which was free or at least cheap, then I may have a reason to change. Right now, WMP12 works, and is free. For the moment at least, i can live with pushing more data over my wifi than I have to. I think you misunderstood the pricing. The "+$18" is the incremental cost of the Family Pack ($54) over and above the single license ($36). So with tax it's $63.45 ($54+17.5%) plus the annual metadata fee after the first year. Probably still too steep, but thought it would be good at least to have the right numbers. I'd be wary of chaining myself to a proprietary codec like WMA (lossless or lossy), and I also hate the way WMP litters my hard drive with little files. I don't know about units made specifically for cars, but there are a lot of options with portable music players. You can use Rockbox (www.rockbox.org) to make several portable players FLAC-capable, including iPods, SanDisk, Archos, Cowon, etc. And there are some portable players that come FLAC-capable straight out of the box (Cowon, Sansa Fuze, etc.). Assuming that you're talking about burning audio discs and not data discs, check out the freeware Bun: http://www.burrrn.net/ Also, Foobar 2000 has a "burninate" extension which will allow you to burn audio discs from flac sources. You're right that it's easier to maintain one library than two, but with one of the various available tools (eg, dBpoweramp baatch converter, flac2mp3.pl, mp3fs, etc) it doesn't take much more effort. And for some of us the convenience is well worth the modest incremental effort. Sure FLAC is one thing, but some times depending on the vehicle and person's ears (and how often they listen to the song), there is a need to burn at 256 or 320k. You probably won't be able to tell the difference between a good quality Mp3 in the car and you'll increase storage space and battery life by using a compressed format. But if you're going to burn a redbook CD then there's absolutely no reason not to use full-quality FLAC files. I use 'Burrrn' (http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4) to burn FLACs directly to CD. Extremely simple, especially if you have a CUE sheet for the album. I'm not sure if there are any rippers that can also burn CDs directly from FLAC files. EAC can both rip and burn CDs, but it requires you to decode the FLAC files to WAV first before it can burn.
