Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
While Sonos would replace your existing Squeezebox infrastructure, the Pi with Max2Play would in fact extend it. Our system show up the same as the original Squeezeboxes in your Server interface and perfectly complement and expands multiroom Squeezebox applications. I replaced my Touch with a Sonore microRendu. You can drive it with Logitech Media Server, a DLNA based program such as JRiver, Roon or Airplay. It means a lot when you see users taking the software we built and utilizing them so greatly. We started our project with a special focus on the great capabilities of the Squeezebox system and the goal bringing these features to the Raspberry Pi for everyone to enjoy. Now it is fantastic to see such great solutions like RSJ's system based on our software. The integration of the Rii to control Jivelite is a great touch that we have not seen yet, great idea! If you have any thoughts or ideas on the software that would make your experience with it better, we would love to hear from seasoned users what is on the top of their lists. Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
Rainer glad to inspire you. I love the Raspberry Pi, Max2play and Hifiberry amp setup, it's compact size allows you to get real creative with it, you simply can't customize your setup like this with off the shelf products. Although I think the price point of the Hifiberry amp is a little high, the dollar per watt is high compared to Sure amps, the way it plugs into the Raspberry Pi is just super clean. One of my next projects will be to mount this setup to a ceiling speaker and power it with one of these power supplies. Then I'll I need to do is run speaker wire to the other ceiling speaker for a super clean and easy setup that's controlled from a smart phone, nice. Using a speaker kit from Parts Express I made these bookshelf speakers with a Raspberry Pi and Hifiberry amp inside. It's the cheapest and simplest setup. All it requires is a Raspberry Pi, SD card, a case, power supply and keyboard. Set up the Raspberry Pi, plug it into the receiver using HDMI, plug in the power and your good to go. Chromecast bridge does the same but you still need a powered speaker for the CCast. With Sonos you can play music files from any networked device. I have a friend who has his music on a USB hard drive plugged into his router. It is also quite impressive that if you have the app installed on your phone it will play music from that as well. In general it is a lot easier to set up and run than Squeezebox, but you pay for the privilege, and it is a lot less flexible. The Sonos controller app for the iPhone is very neat. However Sonos is simply too expensive to be a mass market product and will remain niche. Chromecast and similar products are the future. Sonos server is essentially built into each unit. The files have to be served from somewhere locally, but that can be a NAS or some sort of drive attached to a router, etc. I assume this is the main reason that Sonos is not willing to update their software in any significant way (key issue for me would be the 65,000 track maximum). As > the spotify app have been changed in the last year as well there is no > need to change > to a different platform. It does everything that I want it to do. Ditto. What I want from my system is to play music from my NAS, my favourite radio stations, BBC iPlayer Radio and Spotify. While my squeezeboxes continue to do those things then I have no reason to change. The iPlayer Radio app has been a bit of a struggle recently, but I still have it working (thanks to "bpa" on this forum). However, Michael Herger's recent improvements to the official Spotify app make it even less likely I will want to change. The sound quality is up to the player you use and most player hardware will output a digital stream if you want to use an external DAC. If I were forced to move to another system it would probably be Chromecast as so many streaming phone apps support it now. Sonos is convenient for those who want "all in one" active speaker options, but otherwise offers nothing more than you can get with SqueezeBox for a fraction of the price (if you are of a geeky / DIY persuasion). Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
I was going on the same path last year to look for alternatives for squeezebox as the LMS-software on my QNAP nas had security breaches. In the end I went for a rpi2 with max2play.com. As it is a rather cheap alternative I wanted to give it a try. By now, it's not a try anymore, but it's here to stay. It's simple in daily use and I got the airplay option as an extra. As the spotify app have been changed in the last year as well there is no need to change to a different platform. It does everything that I want it to do. ad6922's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36131 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
It's good to know Roon is out there should LMS no longer have community support, but $499 is steep. Particularly if it closes up shop like SB did (as a commercial venture, at least). I've been very happy with my 2 Pi's. I'm not technically gifted, and I had little problem setting mine up. I'll likely step up and purchase a display at some point, although the one remaining "real" SB in my system is a Touch and I don't have a real need at the moment for another display. 2-SB3s, 1-Touch, and a Raspberry Pi B+ with TekDevice dacBerry 3+ running piCorePlayer. Mac Mini as a server (OS X Yosemite). Direct Ethernet connection (1-SB3 and the Raspberry Pi) and power-line (1-SB3 and Touch). iPeng is my controller of choice. Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
bobm wrote: > I will look up chromecast and see how that works. I assumed that > required the device to stream to it. Thanks Bob The chromecast needs a cast device such as a phone, itouch or laptop but one you send the request the device is no longer needed unless you want to send something else or adjust volume etc. There is a cast bridge that's been created by Phillipe in the 3rd party forum which turns the chromecast device into a squeeze device which really makes it a versatile device. This also means you can use the logitech controller to control it as the chromecast essentially is another squeeze device. Hope that helps? Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
You might want to consider Roon if... a) you already have one or more Squeezeboxes (Roon will work with them) b) you don't mind spending a bit of money (Roon has an annual subscription fee or you can buy a lifetime license) c) you want a far better UI than LMS provides It was difficult for me to leave LMS behind, but I've been using Roon ever since they started supporting Squeezebox endpoints and have really come to love it.IMO, it's what LMS should/could have become had Logitech not dumped it. So why am I still here in the Squeezebox forums? Well, my kids and a few stingy friends who don't want to pay for Roon are still using LMS (often with my help). Combined with iPeng (and rPIs if you don't have a Squeezebox), I think LMS is still the best cheap/free solution available. Chromecast audio is also an option as it doesn't require the phone once you've 'casted' the audio. I have pis with HiFiBerry amps and a few chromecast audios and they work great. Re: [slim] Questions on alternatives to SB
1) Sonos doesn't require a server software (that's built I to every device) but the browsing is more basic than for the SB. 2) the phone handles all of the stream (the music is transmitted from the phone to the AirPlay device) so it needs to be always on, must not use other audio (no Facebook with movie autoplay or websites with audio while listening to music etc.) and you must not walk away. Why don't you just build your own Squeezebox with a Raspberry pi and a soundcard (e.g. Hifiberry). It's really simple these days because you can even buy pre-configured SW images and it works pretty well, you can even run the server on the device. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 9, the Universal App for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
