Re: [slim] Recommendations for in-ceiling speakers?

2007-07-02 Thread dennisd

Also on a budget, I installed 812C Mitec 8" Speakers from Smarthome in
the bedroom about 6' apart and 3' from the side walls and 5' from the
headboard wall. (I have waterproof 6.5" speakers over the showers and
they don't sound as good but are adequate and supply both stereo
channels.) I am happy. I replaced my large'ish AE EVO floor standing
bedroom speakers and think it was an OK trade. Further though, I used
the Leviton speaker connections to get the wiring out of the ceiling,
down the wall to someplace convenient where I can wire in the amp(s).
(Also Cat 5 for the squeezebox.) I subsequently mounted Chopin Leviton
volume controls next to the bed (Cat5!). If you do a bit of research,
you can find them for nearly half listed price. That gives me a
squeezebox that I can use in the bedroom and 2 bathrooms. (As opposed
to the other 6 squeezeboxes in the rest of the house.)

Congrats on getting things hooked up, and thanks for the review on the
Proficient speakers. I'm still a few months away from installation. In
fact, we just got the detailed cost estimate from the contractor for
our remodel/addition, and at this point "budget speakers" are
definitely all we have room for in our budget!

I've finally hooked up all my zones.
The Proficient speakers have exceeded my expectations.
-Disclaimer- I do not consider myself to be an audiophile -Disclaimer-

Audio from the speakers is clear and crisp throughout volume levels,
even cranked all the way up.
Listened to CSNY "So Far" album.
Guitar and vocals came through with rich detail.

These speakers perform as good if not better than the Polk and Niles
that I had before.
The wife even thinks they sound better than our previous setup.

Enjoying these budget speakers and my Squeezeboxes.

I had a Niles CM6.3SI speaker in my bathroom. It did not compare to
the Polks but sounded fine for the space it was in. I have one
Proficient 6.5" single stereo speaker now.

Moved on Saturday. Having some issues getting my AV rack
(http://avrak.com/) set up properly in my AV cabinet. Clearance
issues.

Oddly my Comcast hookup went swimingly well. Never figured that my
Series 3 Tivo would move without having to go through the dreaded cable
card setup again. Internet works as well.

Before you do anything drastic, get a few opinions from different
wiring professionals. There are ways that wire can be run using tools
like super long drill bits, extendable fiberglass rods, "cable casters"
and other tricks. You can even push wires through solid sprayed-in
insulation. Or you can run something like this along the drywall, and
get it textured over:
http://www.solutions.com/jump.jsp?itemID=5731&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C4%2C26%2C584&iProductID=5731

I wouldn't recommend wireless speakers. They don't sound great, and you
still have to get power to them, which is often more trouble than just
running the speaker wire.

Can I ask how people deal with the cabling for in-wall and ceiling
speakers (assuming you're dealing with existing walls - not building
from scratch) - do you chase in or duct in, or put in a proper
channel?

New house and we're contemplating ripping up the floor, but curious to
know what other options there are. No CAT5 cable sadly...

Do wireless speakers work at all? Just for rear effects in a 5.1
system - and do they operate on 2.4ghz or some other frequency?

Re: [slim] Recommendations for in-ceiling speakers?

2007-05-04 Thread Mike-B

Another vote for the Tannoy's. The dual concentric design they are
famous for makes them deal for in-ceiling mounting. They have the
widest off-axis dispersion available, this makes them perfect for the
less than ideal position they will be mounted in. No need to angle
tweeters etc.
As an extreme example I was recently involved in setting up a 5.1
system with three B&W 802D at the front and Tannoy CMS12TDC's in a 13'
ceiling for the rears (http://www.tannoy.com/CMS12TDC) more than a
match for each other.

Niles Audio has a wide selection of in-ceiling speakers. I have a pair
that I use as rear-surround speakers, so I really do not listen to them
critically. They have the ability to direct the tweeter toward the
listening position, if desired.

Funny that Takoma Park. How is the nuclear free zone?
I'm now spitting distance from the other nuclear free zone Garrett

you also might consider speakers from home theater direct.

I have a pair of HD-R80s in my living room, and a pair of HD-R65s in my

ceiling takes a little getting used to, but I got over that pretty
quickly. The aesthetics of flush in-ceiling speakers are a huge plus.

Moving very soon to a new house and put in Proficient Audio

Have you looked at Tannoy? You won't find them at the typical Hi-Fi
store as they're made in Scotland and are recognized for their Pro
Studio Monitoring systems. My living room 5.1 system is Tannoy
controlroom monitors and they've got some GREAT in-ceiling/in-wall
systems.

You should be able to find them online from commercial installation
companies if not eBay.

Info at: http://www.tannoy.com/CMSOverview for ceiling
and at: http://www.tannoy.com/IWOverview for in-walls.

Info on their Consumer and Studio stuff is available at the home page:
