Probably spammers are sending email purporting to me from me. It
happens now and again to anyone with a well-known email address. For
the emails direct to you, not through the list, I'm surprised the
domain's SPF record didn't do more to convince Gmail.

Also, aren't I in your address book? I'd have thought that would always
stop them being marked as spam.

No, I don't think there's any issue with the ISP sending mail on my
behalf, pair.com, it's almost certainly down to forged spam using my
email address.

An example from our coursework - people gained marks for putting a not
putting firewall between an internet connect and a web-server. Those who
put a firewall between did not receive the marks.

Of the people I know who did use a firewall they worked the system
internet connection -> firewall -> web server. With access to non-web
ports (for remote access - I used 22 for ssh some people used more
Microsoft focussed ports - honestly remote desktop on a web server?) only
allowed from a restricted list of ip addresses or something.

With this mark being 'lost' it was defended for a) security and b)
resiliancy. If there is a firewall between the server and the internet
then some protection from DDoS and other attacks can be put in place. The
lecturer just stood and said, web servers should be open to the web so you
don't need a firewall.

Like I say, even justified and (personally) correct answer just don't fit
into his 10 year old text-books so they are wrong.

As a computer networking Lecturer myself, I would say that there are
many ways to create a properly working network, and also many more ways
to create a 'bad' network. If you have time in the exam, why not do it
the way that you have been taught (Cisco?) and then do it your own way,
and analyse the differences and advantages of each.

You will get marks for what you have done - the lecturers way - But you
won't get marks deducted for your own way, and you could pick up some
extra marks for your analysis. (if there is room in the marking scheme
that is)

Peter.

I'm inclined to agree - as one of the students with an exam - however I
have to put the exam down as my priority.

Painful exam I have anyway, networking exam that has to be answered the
way the lecturer wants - not the way I feel the networking should be done.
At least the other exams are the way I feel I should approach them.

Peter, I agree.
Back when I was in the mill, I'd precis my entire course notes into four-six
pages per course, and learn the lot. Mnemonics where necessary. To learn the
linear 6 DOF equations of motion I learned two numbers, a row number and a
column number. These gave me the (sparse) matrix for the EOM, which I wrote
down on scrap paper as soon as I got into the exam.
The night before I stopped studying about 8 and had a drink.
A year later I was teaching aerodynamics.

Heard on the local news tonight, a shopkeeper saying people had been
panic buying essentials - she was sold out of bread, something else

Sorry - best I've got are some blankets and a full tank of diesel in case
I get stuck.

It just comes down to only ever having snow for a week a year. I've just
learned to avoid driving if I think things might get risky.

And as was said earlier - I'm more scared of other drivers than I am
myself/snow. Some of the stories I heard last year from people at work.

I went to Dorchester's Waitrose tonight, like normal. No bread. Not
even those small horrible ones that look and taste like bird cage
lining. The lady said that they'd had a full stock but it all sold out
this morning after people got up to hear news of impending snow and
panic bought.

Still, snow isn't all bad.

Yes, but you guys know how to deal with snow and ice; we get it so rarely we
end up with major problems, simply because their isn't enough salt and drivers

I think driving all the way to Dorchester could be an unnecessary risk. I
could however be persuaded to go somewhere in Bournemouth for a "mini"

I am/was going to be taking Robert up on his offer of a lift in, but
can see that it could be tricky getting there and especially back

I might be able to make it, but I don't like driving in snow(because none of
the other drivers seems to know how) and if nobody else is there there would
be point in going.

Given I've two passengers I was going to play it by ear and possibly come.
Most of the forecasts are putting the 'heavy' snow around 18:00. So I'll
probably be on IRC at around 19:00 too see how bad things are. The met
office is reporting they are only 60% sure of the prediction - I suppose
snow isn't the easiest thing to predict.

http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/4833435.Icy_conditions_predicted_for_the_rest_of_the_week/
