[DQSD-Users] Change default search engine
Hi I would like my default search engine to be google.co.uk. I have put the following line in my localprefs.js file defaultsearch=gguk, but google.com is still reigning supreme. Re: [work] Re: [DQSD-Users] FW: [DQSD-Devel] Disabled searches
I concur - I use DQSD several times per hour when I'm at the computer. When I'm at someone else's computer, I am lost without it. I have never even considered trying any other toolbar, cause DQSD's features functions could never be matched. I think people are just busy, hence the slow-down in traffic on the devel list. The list appears to be working, although traffic is so low it is fairly hard to tell.. It would seem that development and discussion on the toolbar has been abandoned. Things that were once being discussed as design changes, fixes etc. haven't been mentioned in months.. Maybe with the slew of other toolbars coming out, people have migrated off... [DQSD-Users] Google's deskbar and miniviewer
Today's news, Google launches Goggle Deskbar http://toolbar.google.com/deskbar/index.html It succesfully clone the best feature from DQSD. Less features but a better interface for configurability. You can add custom searches (I think only GET searches and not POSTs like DQSD). I still prefear DQSD because I can add my personal searches, set alarm, send emails and more but I really like the Miniviewer http://toolbar.google.com/deskbar/help/options_viewer.html !! Anyone have ideas on implementing it in DQSD? What's if google will implement searches with POSTs too? [DQSD-Users] Selection of whois destination (betterwhois vs. whois.sc)
I agree. If we really want to beef up the traffic on this relatively low traffic mailing list, we should encourage e-mail from anyone who wants to change DSQD search to direct more searches to their own sites. We could then send out bulk e-mails asking for others to send in requests to this list, because I think it is important for DSQD users to be aware of all of the web sites out there. All of us are intensely interested in finding out about all the offerings on the web directly from the promoters of those sites, because they are the ones that know what is best. You just have to give the person you sold it to the source, and the right to distribute it under the GPL. For an example, see RedHat. As to the Hotbot toolbar, my understanding was that they approached Dave, despite the fact that they didn't have to, as long as they adhere to the GPL, which they have every intention of doing. [DQSD-Users] RE: Daves toolbar / ePilot (Phil Albert)
I would be willing to send Dave and Glenn et al. some money or buy them lunch - DQSD is elegant and useful. As for the idea of ePliot's cost-per-click search engine listings, there is no free lunch. ePilot's search results will take users where they don't want to go on their own. (Otherwise, why would someone pay ePilot to direct traffic towards them?) I must say, I am weary from web advertising. I check the news and I have to clip coupons and visit a casino. I check a blog and I have to buy a new car, check out this other cool site and optimize my computer. I check my stocks and I have to view a mostly naked woman implying that I need to lose weight. and on and on. I say Go ahead, ePilot, make all the new searches you want and load them up to SourceForge. I'll make sure not to load them. I do like Peter Heath's idea. It's kinda like the guys in SF that bought 24 pay telephone lines from PacBell and had computers dialing 1-800 numbers all day on those pay phones. The phone company has to share the fees it gets from 1-800 numbers with pay phone operators and the guys collected a few $500K checks from PacBell before PacBell got suspicious. Thanks for the post Kim. This is just a wild guess, it really should work the way you have it set up (I have the same clock settings in my original preferences.js, and it works fine). But fact is that 1000 / 60 = 16.6667, so if values in localprefs areinterpreted as seconds rather than milliseconds, your clock would updateonce every 17 minutes. That sounds really far-fetched, though -- just a guess. Also, my clocktooltipform = "", I'm not sure what happens if you set itto false... Does JScript coerce it into a string? I tried setting clocktooltipform = "" just in case. My clock has said14:04 since I logged on a while ago. It's currently 14.41.
