function properly? I already have a 4KC filter in the correct AM slot but want
to add an additional 6KC filter as well, the only vacant slot is the CW slot.

About a week ago I inquired about a microphone and an AC-4 power source. Thank
you all for your responses and I did purchase both of them. In the process I
also acquired a T-4B transmitter in very good condition and would like to find
a good R-4B to go with it. If anyone has one for sale, I would appreciate a
reply.

Thank you all once again and 73,

I've never tried it, but it should work, sorta :-)

The AM filter position has three resistors to match the filter
impedance, (apparently different than the CW/SSB filters?,) and most
likely to increase the insertion loss so that the output level stays
approximately the same when switching between the two types of filters.

So just plugging in the filter may work, but the passband may be
distorted and the output may increase considerably when switching to
AM. It certainly won't hurt anything to try.

I would say try just plugging it in, and let us know the results!

Yes, it would be using the Product Detector and so you would be using
"exalted carrier" for AM. I made the (rash?!) assumption that you would
put the narrower filter in the CW spot to use during difficult
conditions where exalted carrier would be an advantage.

The Third Mixer LO is also switched for AM to center the passband of the
50 kHz IF...

Most likely will not be satisfactory. If you're going to use exalted
carrier anyway, you might as well use the SSB filter at 2.1 to get the
full advantage.

Thanks for pointing out my error(s)!! :-) That's what I get for

perhaps more. Same size as the ac4? perhaps smaller?

what would be a doable price?

Not looking at specifics, but think the $250 to $300 range. Perhaps
less, perhaps more. the determining factor will be a good long lasting
transformer with improved rating.

Hi Mike,

I am not sure how much demand there would be for such a supply. AC-4s are
still fairly plentiful at usually $100 or less here in New England. With
your AC-4R upgrade kit, it make it into a very nice and reliable power
supply with many more years of service in it.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Mike, I am not sure how well that idea would sell because
the AC4 power supply is still a very common item to find.
I would think the AC4R upgrade kit would be the future for
the AC4. I have installed about a dozen of those upgrade
kits this year in customer radios and I think this is a
definite plus. This kit replaces all the components with
new components which by design are much better components
than those manufactured 20-30 years ago. I suspect with
the upgrade kit, the AC4 power supply will last another 30
years.

My two-cents worth.

Re: [Drakelist] Just thinking out loud

2009-10-03 Thread Garey Barrell

Mike -

You have some really good ideas to improve the AC-4, especially the Bias
failure shut down. I'm not sure what "design improvements" you would
make, the design seems pretty stable as it is.

As AC-4s are selling for around $100, with your kit added you have a
pretty good supply for considerably less than your price range. I don't
think I've ever seen a power transformer fail in an AC-4 absent "outside
failures". Even a lost Bias meltdown doesn't seem to harm the transformer.

I'm also not sure that fan cooling is warranted. Although ANY reduction
in temperature of electronic devices is always good, I'm not certain
that the AC-4 gets hot enough to matter. I ran three B-Lines in the
60's on autostart RTTY, running 24/7 and with key down, full power
transmissions lasting well over 30 minutes. The only failure in 4
years was a single 12BY7 which had a filament open. The finals lasted
about a year, and at $12 for a matched pair I replaced them when the
output dropped to 100W on 20M AFSK.

It's too bad you didn't include a Bias shutdown feature in the AC-4R! I
would have suggested if I had known what you were up to.

[Drakelist] dial change on a R4B

I found a beautiful R4b ,bought the rig and found the dial is cracked and
some of the dial markings long gone. I have a NOS dial that came with the

covered removing the pto and thus the dial also. I did this last year on a

100% more complicated? than the 830. The pictures and the write ups I read

I guess my question is this a job that is easier than it looks?or should
be left to someone who does this all the time.I have no problem trouble

thanks guys for the input...

like I was saying, this is just wishful thinking.

as for the lost of bias voltage. that's bit rougher. A common problem
is just having the plug come somewhat loose and you loose the bias.
That would require some feedback or sense wire from the rig back to
the power supply. Not a doable option

lost of bias at the supply is easier to do. But will require a bit of
work. I don't know if the amount of hassle is worth the price of

Re: [Drakelist] dial change on a R4B

2009-10-03 Thread Garey Barrell

Dale -

The B-Line dial is not particularly hard to replace. One REQUIREMENT is
a pair of snap-ring pliers. These come in a set from just about any
hardware or automotive shop, and are not real expensive. Essentially
plier handles with changeable tips, usually two or three different sizes
and both straight and offset varieties. The handles are also settable
to either "close" the pins or "open" the pins when the handles are
squeezed by moving a pivot pin. Once you have these, the job is simple.

First set the PTO dial to the low end of the band. Removing the PTO is
easy, just three wires and three nuts (6-32) on the spade bolts on the
bottom of the PTO. You may need to push the wiring harness around a
little to get to them, but not difficult. Digital photos are always a
good idea if available.
Sure a lot better than a "rough" sketch like we used to make. Once the
PTO is out, just remove the front snap-ring and then remove each of the
washers, spacers and friction disk on the front side of the dial disk.
Do NOT spread the snap-ring any more than necessary to allow it to slide
along the shaft. They WILL break if you get too enthusiastic with the
snap-ring pliers!! Lay them out on the bench in order so you get them
back correctly. I mark the shaft in front of the snap-ring with a
marker to get it back at the same spot. If it's too close to the PTO,
the main tuning knob skirt might hit the panel when you compress the
rubber "clutch" that allows you to hold the skirt while turning the knob
to adjust the 0.00 kHz mark on the skirt.

Replace the dial disk with the new one, and reassemble, making sure the
dial numerals are correct from the front! Don't worry about the actual
orientation of the dial disk as it is not difficult to adjust it when
the PTO is back in the radio.

If you have a counter you can set the PTO to 5.455 MHz (green wire out
of the PTO), this is 0.00 on the dial. If you don't have a counter,
just SPOT the transmitter or transceiver to get it on frequency. IF the
dial is then way off of 0.00, and you look down from the top of the PTO
you'll see that the left-most gear is drawn to the right by a coil
spring. The hole for this shaft in the front wall of the PTO gearbox is
oblong, and if you press the shaft to the left the gear will disengage
and the dial will spin freely, allowing you to set it to 0.00, or pretty
close. Once it's close, you can center the sliding fiducial on the
front panel to the center of the window, and then set the dial exactly
by holding the dial disk with one hand while turning the main tuning
knob with the other until the calibrate signal is zero-beat. This is
the reason for the friction disks / clutch.

I think that's all, although I don't have a real good record for
accuracy today! It's really easier done than said, especially once you
do it a time or three! :-)
