I am trying to bring my old R4B/T4XB combination back to
life after about

35 years of non-use.
The 5595 kHz oscillator part of the second mixer 12BE6
circuit does not
oscillate. I have tried several tubes with no effect. As
far as I can
determine, the tube is functioning normally and I can make
the receiver
work (after a fashion) by injecting a 5595 kHz signal from
an external
source. Before I take out/test/replace the handfull of Rs
and Cs and also
look for a replacement xtal, I am wondering if anyone on
the list has had a
similar problem. In particular, can you recommend a
source for a

replacement xtal? Thanks!

Charles W4KEP

It may well be the crystal. Replacements can be
obtained from International Crystal. I've bought many
crystals from them and all were perfect. They know the
parameters for Drake crystals.
You might want to post also to the other drake list
at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DrakeRadio/

It seems to me this is a fairly common problem.

the oscillator may be working but on another frequency. if you have a receiver
that you can listen around the 5595 wrap a few turns around the second mixer,
hook it up to the receiver and tune around the frequency. you may have a cap or
inductor that has changed value and the oscillator is still working. if the
oscillator is working you can add or subtract capacitance or inductance to
bring it to the correct frequency. i have done this many times and it works.

[Drakelist] Drake R4B 5595 kHz oscillator/mixer

2014-11-15 Thread Charles Bostian
My thanks to everyone who has sent me ideas. At one of your suggestions I
built a simple circuit to check the xtal performance. It works fine -
series resonant at 5563.3 kHz and parallel resonant between 5599.1 and
5599.3 kHz. So the problem must be in the four caps I haven't checked
yet. Naturally they are the four hardest parts to get to!

It could very well be a bad crystal. If you or a friend have a crystal not
too far from that frequency, you can wire it in and just see if the circuit
oscillates.

I have used freePCB and the free version of viewmate from Pentalogix to

Boys and girls…

I’ve been working on a replacement calibrator for the drake R4b. This
calibrator will output 100, 50, and 25 kHz signals. You select the output with
a dip jumper. The output also pulses on and off, and again, you can turn that
off if you don’t want it.

it has the same footprint as the original, and all wiring plugs into it with a
MTA.100 header and plug.

This project is about done. I’m in the process of having a small run of pcbs

[Drakelist] Drake R4B calibrator

2013-12-08 Thread Mike Bryce
Gang,

We all know that the RTL parts used in the calibrator are no longer being made.
So, if your calibrator in your R4B goes kaput, then you're screwed.

This year at the dayton hamvention I talked to Ron, WB4HFN, about the problem
and he sent me a broken calibrator board. I needed the dimensions.

So, after lots of paper and a few broken pencils, a prototype pcb has been
made. Actually, three here made.

Same foot print as the original. You have your choice of either 100, 50, or 25
kHZ markers. The marker pulses so you can find it on a crowed band so you're
adjusting the dial to the marker instead of a SW broadcast.

The pcb will have .100 MTA plug assembly that plugs into the board. It supplies
the board with the necessary voltages, ground and output. There is no
modification required to the radio, the front panel control will work just as
before.

A 3.2mHZ crystal is oscillated and divided by a 7 bit ripple counter. You can
net the crystal freq with a trimmer on the pcb.

There is an on-board regulator to keep the oscillator stable and an adjustment
to control the speed of the pulses.

This is a prototype board. The next run will have some corrections made and I
am going to put in a jumper to select either a pulse output or no pulse
(steady) output.

The board is a hybrid. It has both through hole and surface mount components.

The final cost of the pcb has yet to be determined. I don't know if I will
offer it as a kit or fully assembled The surface mount parts are not the ones
that look like paint dots, but
 they are small.

If anyone is interested in the remaining two prototypes let me know and I'll
assemble and test them.

Right now, I don't have an R4B to install one, so will be looking for someone
that can write up the procedure on how to install the new calibrator.

you all for your responses and I did purchase both of them. In the process I
also acquired a T-4B transmitter in very good condition and would like to find
a good R-4B to go with it. If anyone has one for sale, I would appreciate a
reply.

Thank you all once again and 73,

Re: [Drakelist] Drake R4B

2009-10-03 Thread Garey Barrell

Tim -

I've never tried it, but it should work, sorta :-)

The AM filter position has three resistors to match the filter
impedance, (apparently different than the CW/SSB filters?,) and most
likely to increase the insertion loss so that the output level stays
approximately the same when switching between the two types of filters.

So just plugging in the filter may work, but the passband may be
distorted and the output may increase considerably when switching to
AM. It certainly won't hurt anything to try.

I would say try just plugging it in, and let us know the results!

Lee -

Yes, it would be using the Product Detector and so you would be using
exalted carrier for AM. I made the (rash?!) assumption that you would
put the narrower filter in the CW spot to use during difficult
conditions where exalted carrier would be an advantage.

The Third Mixer LO is also switched for AM to center the passband of the
50 kHz IF...

Most likely will not be satisfactory. If you're going to use exalted
carrier anyway, you might as well use the SSB filter at 2.1 to get the
full advantage.

Thanks for pointing out my error(s)!! :-) That's what I get for
thinking too early in the morning!

Drake never provided a service manual for the 4 Series, other than the
SPR-4. The biggest problem is locating parts on the chassis. I have
made a parts locator manual for the C Line, maybe do the B Line one
day! It's a lot of work, and is not a big seller. A sample is at

http://hr99.home.mindspring.com/R-4C_Servicez
It makes it a LOT easier. All the information you need to service the
receiver is in the Drake manual, except where parts are located.

As for your R-4B, we'd need a lot more information to troubleshoot. Is
it low on all bands? How low? What is the signal strength of the
calibrator? Are all the tubes lit? Especially V1.

Obviously the first thing is to see if the S-Meter is at 0 with no
signal applied, and goes to 60 dB over S-9 when the RF Gain is turned
full CCW.

If this is good, then check the bias voltage at TP-2 as described in the
manual. This must be very close to -1.35V and sets the sensitivity of
the receiver.

Next is to try the Antenna, RF and Injection alignment as described in
the manual. Do a single band, using the calibrator, to see if any
improvement can be made. Do not bother with any of the other alignment,
as it it almost certainly OK, unless of course someone has been
tightening all the loose screws.!

Let us know what you find!

[drakelist] Drake R4B White noise but No Signal

I have been working on my R4B with excellent help from Mr. Al Parker. He
has been a wealth of knowledge and I sincerely thank him.

With Al's input I have gone from no audio to obtaining white noise on the
receiver. I am not able to tune any stations and I do not see movement in
the S meter as I move across the band.

With the Pre Selector I am able to increase the noise level. The
preselector does not necessarily match up with the band that I am on. For
instance 40 meters peak noise is with the red indicator close the 80 meter
mark and 80 meters is noisiest with the preselector at the 20 meter area.

I was wondering if any one has experienced white noise with no signal
before.

Thanks

Hi Tim, et al,
My work is shown at:
http://www.thecompendium.net/radio/filtercap.htm
and it's also linked to from Thom's Drake site's tech notes pg;
http://www.zerobeat.net/drakelist/
It takes about an hour to open the can, clean it out, put in new
discretes, and seal it up. Not a dificult job, I explain it more on that
page.
Also on the same page, I've got info supplied by Mark, K9MRK, on caps
of proper size to fit under the chassis of an AC-3/4. There's not a lot
of space there, or in the rcvrs, so physical dimensions need to be watched
when purchasing caps.

 Kevin,

I dont remember what W8UT did, probably the same thing that Im telling
you,
but I saw a neat fix that someone did on one of my R4B's, left the
electrolytic can in place so it looked stock, but cut all the leads from
it
underside and wired in separate small electrolytics...works great.
Otherwise, its difficult to find replacements. I have found some at
Mendelson's Surplus in Dayton,Ohio, they have alot of NOS but I was
alittle
concerned about them being dryed up, I bought some and used them in my
Hammarlunds, they were fine. I don't know if they will get them for you
however, Mendelson's is a huge surplus place, about the physical size of
a
football field, with rows and rows of NOS as well as used parts in bins.
I
go up there about twice a year to stock up on parts and hardware, they
also
sell screws, nuts, bolts, etc. for $100 a pound.

Hi Devin, et al,
Yes that method works fine. Space for discrete caps under the chassis
is a bit hard to find. If you don't want to undertake it yourself, I
could be persuaded to re-stuff your can for a nominal fee, plus parts. I
don't know if AES has the proper size in their new mfgd ones, you might
