[Dx4win] Help LoTW import modes
Seems like I have 2 challenges: 19950903 080300 AI4W 291 RTTY 40m 599 599 5 N Error:Mode=PTOR James|Nokesville, VA 1. I have 22 QSOs labeled as being in RTTY mode by DX4WIN. RTTY appears as the mode in the mode box and as the entry in the ADIF. However, in the comments box, there is an error about MODE=PTOR. I think this indicates an import error from when I imported an old log, and it was really a Pactor QSO that was changed to the RTTY mode during import. I guess I will have to manually change those 22 Qs to PACTOR - agree? 2. However, the TQSL signing process seems to be detecting the error entry as another mode error. I get a signing error about the PTOR mode being invalid - But that QSO's mode is listied as RTTY - PTOR only appears in the ERROR line of the ADIF generated by DX4WIN. I guess the solution is change the 22 entries to PACTOR mode manually and then also delete the error line. Anyone disagree with this plan? With any luck, that will be the end of the mode confusions and I will be uploading 14,539 WA9ALS Qs soon. If this seems to work, I will get the VP5RY log up soon too. Thanks! 73 - John, WA9ALS

Sorry this post is wide bandwidth, but hey, it's plain text, and I think makes a good point. At first glance, it looks like you could do a search for and Replace with . The DX entries do NOT have the , so they wouldn't be affected. Here is an example of 2 WriteLog ADIF entries before and after edit with Marek's WL2DX4WIN, and finally using Search and Replace: BEFORE EDIT: 20030927 001432 21.087 15m 4 RTTY KA7KUA 599 599 3 WA 3 7 1 United States K 1 20030927 001529 21.087 15m 5 RTTY JM1XCW 599 599 25 2 9 3 Japan JA 1 AFTER WL2DX4WIN EDIT: 20030927 001432 Freq=21 087KHz 15m 4 RTTY KA7KUA 599 599 3 WA 3 7 1 United States K 1 20030927 001529 Freq=21 087KHz 15m 5 RTTY JM1XCW 599 599 25 2 9 3 Japan JA 1 +++ And here are the original 2 entries after doing Search and Replace using WORD: 20030927 001432 21.087 15m 4 RTTY KA7KUA 599 599 3 WA 3 7 1 United States K 1 20030927 001529 21.087 15m 5 RTTY JM1XCW 599 599 25 2 9 3 Japan JA 1 I think it is the same effect IN THIS CASE/CONTEST/LOG PROGRAM whether you run Marek's program or do a simple Search and Replace with your word processor. YMMV, and all ADIF's are not identical - check the WF1B version carefully before making any assumptions! 73 - John, WA9ALS P.S. If you use WORD, be sure to save it as a plain text file!
[Dx4win] Importing a contest file and not getting state information
Yep, you have to run Marek's WL2DX4WIN program to convert your WriteLog file to ADIF for DX4WIN that will import the state info correctly. [Dx4win] How to xmit PSK off frequency
> I don't know if I'm being overly simplistic, but couldn't you just operate > split, as you would with any other mode? I think it's because PSK31 is so narrow that a DX "split" would only need to be a short distance away (?100-300 Hz) that it would still be in the bandpass waterfall. Thus you don't need to move "that far" and it would be nice to just have the software alter the transmit by the desired amount. Moving the rig is way too old fashioned! ;-) It would really be sort of an exercise in frustration to operate the rig in split mode for such a small needed offset. 73

[Dx4win] CW Keyer
> Does anyone know for sure that its safe to simply use the key the IC-706 directly from pin 17 without going through the transistor switch? 1. You can invert the logic by swapping the transistor's base and emitter leads. 2. Anecdotes that don't necessarily apply to CW keying: I've inadvertently sent the PTT and FSK signals to the 706 without a transistor switch, and it worked, except the PTT was inverted. I also routinely send the fsk signal to a 706, 1000mp, and PROII with only a 1K resistor in the line. I originally saw this suggestion in the documentation for the RITTY program by K6STI. I wouldn't say this was safe unless you really understand the schematic of your rig's various inputs. I don't know anything about the CW input - FOr CW, I use a 2n switch with emitter to ground, collector to key, and base to serial port DTR thru 1K resistor. The switch is the way to go - just invert your logic if backwards.

[Dx4win] Fw: [Dx4win]PSK Interface
If you have a soundcard in your computer, you should be able to try PSK basically for free. Minimal installation would be cables for audio into and out of your rig and computer. Depending on your rig, you might be able to input the audio via a phone patch input that will key the VOX circuit for you. Alternatively, you could manually press a MANUAL transmit button on the rig. At least give this a try before spending money on an unnecessary "interface". Then if you find you like PSK31, you can make a 2-component PTT line with <$5 worth of RS parts. I just don't understand buying $50-100 interfaces. You can run DXHUNTER in a DOS session simultaneously with your favourite programs, such as your log: PIF and ICO files are included, to use the program under Windows, so you'll not have to abandon your dear old LOG program, when adopting DXHUNTER." I run WIN2000SP3 and don't have this program on my computer at all (NO DOS!). However, you can be easily confused on the Configure|Links screen in DX Telnet where it refers to "DXHUNTER or external Log Path". Mine is set to C:\DXTELNET\DUPER, and then DUPER is set to export to both WriteLog and DX4WIN by the 2 paths: C:\DXTELNET\DXT2WL\ and C:\DXTELNET\DXT4WIN\. If you only want to export to DX4WIN, you can do it as described with DUPER, OR you can just enter C:\DXTELNET\DXT4WIN\ as the "DXHUNTER or external Log Path". Be sure you run the DXT4WIN program, an easy step to omit! I use DUPER because that way I am covered, whether running DX4WIN -or- WriteLog -OR BOTH-! (I don't have to ever edit the path that way.) DX Telnet might have to be in the C:\DXTELNET directory - I'm not sure about that. [Dx4win] Upgrading to XP?
XP is an evolution of WIN2000 and WIN98 and doesn't "really" have DOS. XP and WIn2000 have a Command Prompt (C:> prompt), and certain old DOS commands are still available, but I doubt you could count on "old" ham programs that utilize anything very special, e.g. soundcard, to work under XP. This is why RITTY/K6STI won't run under WIN2000 Command Prompt. If you're still tied into DOS, stick with WIN98. [Dx4win] Does dx4win.cty automatically update?

[Dx4win] Prob with program startup
I just tried to start DX4WIN v5.03 in the usual way to add Vlad's QSL Manager update. The opening screen appears for a sec or two as usual, but then it just drops out back to the desktop! I haven't been having any other problems with the program at all. Anyone seen this happen and have any ideas? I sure hate to get into re-installing if I don't have to. Of course, I have tried a reboot withhout success. Tnx!

There's also a link from my homepage now. For the rightfully paranoid (of rtf files etc), I also copied the actual text on the new page: Please see http://www.qsl.net/wa9als/dx4win-mmtty.htm "Using MMTTY with DX4WIN by Larry Gauthier, K8UT".

I'd like a box that says "USE THIS ONE FOR AWARDS" or something to that effect. You don't want to have to only mark confirmed those cards that you keep in the bank vault. ;-)
[Dx4win] Clearing "Submitted" QSL
In a bold move, I did what you did and set 18 flags. I see 2 options: 1. Go to the QSO - click in the DXCC - MIxed box, and a drop-down arrow will appear, and you can change it back to "--". Save the change. Do this for each QSO. OR 2. Go to Reports|Change Award Flags. Then click the drop-down arrow to set award to DXCC Mixed. "Clear Submitted" will appear in the next field down. Click CHANGE. The Flags Cleared will confirm the number of flags cleared. Save your log. That should do it! In File|Info, you can change the location of your saved logs. I am set to EXPERT - not sure if that's needed or not. [Dx4win] dxcc
> Jeff, > My advice, regardless of what the program can do, is to set > up a small spreadsheet with the call, prefix, band and mode > typed in by hand. Huh? By hand? OUCH! DX4WIN will print out the list in a form acceptable by the ARRL. You REALLY feel proud, but frustrated, standing in the line at the checkers' booth at Dayton with your neatly printed form while the checkers are trying to decipher the scrawled lists made by those in front of you! Then he smiles at your nice list and it's amazing how much faster your list is processed! Then when you get the sheet from the ARRL, you just go through line by line clicking the DX4WIN SUBMITTED to CHECKED. One of the beauties of the program! (No flames please - I know some guys like to use the spreadsheets.) 73

Just wanted to echo Phil's comments - I also use WIN2000PRO and rarely have to reboot. I also use Dimension 4 on 4 PCs - Mine is set to check time every 6 hrs. It is one of those things that simply always works in the background without problems so you can forget about it.
[Dx4win] DX4Win ad on QSL labels.

You just need a simple transistor switch - Check the HELP files and/or the WriteLog HELP files.

Mailman woes (Was: [Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use?)

Well, unfortunately they don't get tired of it on the Icom and 1000MP reflectors, despite numerous complaints. I'd sure vote for a change back to like it was, if we have a vote. Wait til you hit the REPLY button and say something like "Hi Bob, just thought I'd let you know my hemorrhoids are improving..." (or some other personal revelation)! Of course, if you're awake/alert/paying attention and can remember it's different than most other reflectors, you can still cut and paste the individual's address from the reply and get around the problem.
