[e-gold-list] Microsoft, A True Story

2001-04-30 Thread Mike Poulos

An unemployed man went to apply for a job with Microsoft thinking his best
chance was as a janitor.

The employment manager arranged for him to take an aptitude test per the
company guide line: (Section XYZ: Floors, sweeping and cleaning).

After the test, the manager said, You will be employed at minimum wage,
$5.15 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address, so that I can send you
information and authorization to report for work on your first day.

Taken aback, the man protested that he had neither a computer nor an e-mail
address. To this the MS manager replies, Well, then, that means that you
virtually don't exist and can therefore hardly expect to be employed,
certainly not at Microsoft!

Stunned, the man left. Not knowing where to turn and having only $10 in his
wallet, he decided to buy a 25 lb flat of tomatoes at the supermarket.
Within less than 2 hours, he sold all the tomatoes individually at 100%
profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ended up with
almost $100 before going to sleep that night.

And thus it dawned on him that he could quite easily make a living selling
tomatoes. Getting up early every day and going to bed late, he multiplied
his profits quickly. After a short time he acquired a cart to transport
several dozen boxes of tomatoes, and acquired his inventory wholesale only
to have to trade it in again on pick-up truck to support his expanding
business.

By the end of the second year, he was the owner of a fleet of pick-up
trucks and managed a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all
selling tomatoes in various communities.
Planning for the future of his wife and children, he decided to buy some
life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picked an
insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the detailed
conversation, the insurance agent asked him for his e-mail address in order
to send the final documents electronically.

When the man replied that he had no e-mail, the adviser is stunned, What,
you don't have e-mail? How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth
without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce? Just imagine where you would
be now, if you had been connected to the Internet from the very start!
After a moment of thought, the wealthy tomato dealer replied, Why, of
course! I would be $5.15 an hour a floor cleaner at Microsoft!

Moral of this story:
1. The Internet, e-mail and e-commerce do not need to rule your life.
2. If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a
millionaire.
3. Seeing that you got this story via e-mail, you're probably closer to
becoming a janitor than you are to becoming a millionaire.
4. If you do have a computer and e-mail, you have already been taken to the
cleaners by Microsoft.

2001-04-30 Thread Ben Legume

Things have been put into motion, hopefully E-qold won't be up much
longer.

Wait for the results before funding, but I've promised to pass on
most of what is donated to the technical expert, who seemed to agree
with me that this was a most worthy cause. A memo
mentioning 'donation' or somesuch would help the division of spoils.

Their ISP refuses to shut them down. We called them
from the Netherlands, the server refuses to shut them
down. We are dependent for those in the US, ie
e-gold/GSR/Omnipay to do something. I think that as
the providor refuses to listen that action should be
taken against them. We have forwarded it to the
authorities, here in the Netherlands, but obviously,
as it is cross border, they cannot react that fast.

[e-gold-list] Re: Scam postings

2001-04-30 Thread OneGroupe International

Actually, Ben only posted a portion of my reply to him.

I never said that e-gold is responsible for the scams
that have been perpetrated using their services.

What I DID say is that it is unfair to call OSGold a scam
because some customers feel their funds are safer there
and advertise as such.

The advertising that Ben referred to did NOT come from
OSGold or its staff, but from our customers.

The point was that it is unfair to judge and call OSGold a
scam just
as it would be unfair to call e-gold a scam based on what
their
customers do.

By only posting a portion of my reply, it is obvious that you
have your own agenda Ben.

[e-gold-list] Re: KvK Chamber of Commerce

2001-04-30 Thread offshoresurfer

Frank,

Thank you for your reply. I was not suggesting for one moment that there was
anything amiss with your business, but was actually asking a more general
question about licensing for Market Makers in various jurisdictions. In most
countries (maybe not the Netherlands?) a license from some financial
supervisory authority such as the National Bank is required to operate a
currency exchange business exchanging say dollars to guilders, and also to
buy and sell gold. I was wondering if the same rules applied to e-gold
exchange businesses.

As an aside, I do agree that the system you describe in Holland sounds
pretty effective - based on what you say, and compared my experiences of it
4 or 5 years ago, it has obviously been tightened up a lot in the last few
years. I have personally opened bank accounts in the Netherlands and nobody
asked me any questions. If the ISP even checks for compliance with the law,
maybe that's going a bit too far...

I also concur with Julian Morrison that the system basically demands a
caveat emptor approach. E-gold don't have any direct control over MMs, and
neither is it desirable that they should have. Just as not every business
that exchanges dollars has to be approved by the Federal Reserve. I guess
what you say about picture IDs etc applies to MMs listed on the official
e-gold site, but I know there are many MMs who are not official. The
coconutgold.com site for example states: Coconut Gold Offshore is utterly
independent of e-gold®, GSR, and related entities. In fact Coconut is
probably THE most independent of the market makers. We have absolutely
NOTHING to do with e-gold® / GSR and don't even get stock from them. We
are utterly independent. And I know Coconut Gold has a first class
reputation.

Anyway I think it is great that there is a free market, but in a free market
people must be able to make informed decisions. E-gold relies very much on
people's trust in the system... I mean how many people really check whether
the gold exists at JPMorgan or in Dubai or wherever... and I think it's
disappointing from that point of view that they have apparently been slow to
react to obvious scams like e-qold and flat rate gold.

Best,

offshoresurfer

 Dear offshore surfer,

The Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce) in
the Netherlands is diferrent than in most countries
that I have been in. They are not just a collector of
fees and forms (though they do that too). They are in
fact proactive, we had to make adjustments to both
the paperwork and the site to meet their requirements.

Furthermore, you cannot get a tax number (see our
about us page) without being registered.

The banks, in the Netherland, not only will not open a
business account with it, but will delve deeper than
that, as they are very concerned about any activity
 that might damage their reuputations.

Our ISP is based in the Netherlands, once again, not
only did we have to submit the proper registrations,
but also, they view the site for compliance with Dutch
 law.

This cost us many meetings, and elapsed time of about
a month before we could legitimately open our doors
for business. Though painful, at the time, we AGREE
with those policies. We have taken this a step
further, by placing their logo and a link to their
site (it is also in English) at the top of our entry
page. We are not required to do so, nor was it
suggested that we do. However, we take our
responsibility, in the handling of financial
transactions or others very seriously. Our about us
page gives you all the details, including telephone
numbers, which will be answered by us, or overnight by
 our computer.

We have started a private group at Yahoo, for the
benefit of our clients. The first posting includes
links, that our clients can use to educate themselves
on how to spot a possible scam or fraud operation.
When we hear of one we post for the benefit of our
clients. We also post virus warnings, e-gold related
matters and news regarding our srvices (ie additions,
changes, bank holdiays). All new clients are invited
 to join.

E-gold requires documentation of MM's, included in
that is a picture ID, and they also view the site
before adding a potential MM to the list. I think
that you will find, these are isolated incidents,
regretable as they are, but that MM's on the whole act
responsibly and are cognizant of their
 responsibilities.

The MM's are currently forming an Alliance which,
hopefully will address some of these concerns. You
must understand, that being spread out all over the
world, this is a very difficult task. MM's have also
put up monies to try to locate and stop scammers, we
 want them off the net.

Hopefully, this has answered your questions, if not
 please

[e-gold-list] Scams

2001-04-30 Thread Samuel Mc Kee

I try to avoid reading these postings but couldn't resist skimming the
latest thread and hit upon a comment about E-Gold somehow being responsible
for scams. I'd just like to ask one rhetorical question directed at no one
in particular.

If E-Gold is in any way responsible for any scam that uses E-Gold as the
medium of exchange, then by the same reasoning isn't the United State Mint
responsible for all scams involving dollars? I lost a bundle a few years
back when an officer at an escrow company stole all the money and
disappeared. The company declared bankruptcy, and I lost everything. Is the
U.S. Mint responsible for that?

James!

I'm VERY happy to find out that you're alive! This makes today a

On another subject, the e-gold Due Dilligence guys have asked
me to remind everyone that they DON'T send out e-mail with the
fake e-Qold (I used a capital q for emphasis) site or from that
domain. I'm still wanting the headers from that email, and so far
nobody has sent them to me. By headers, I mean the complete

If you have the headers from this scammer's spam, please send
them to me ASAP (with your e-gold account number) and just as
always -- PLEASE ONLY ENTER YOUR e-gold ACCOUNT INFO
ONLY ON THE e-gold SITE, which uses SSL! If there is the
SLIGHTEST hint of a doubt, feel free to send me e-mail with the

Please send me e-mail if you don't know what complete e-mail
headers look like, and I'll send you a demonstration. Thanks.

[e-gold-list] Re: Gold-Age

2001-04-30 Thread Michael Moore

The secret Service raided the officeds of Gold-Age and grilled My Bradley
for 8 hours about the running of e-gold. This was done under the auspices
of 'Credit Card Fraud'. No charges were ever laid and it is no
coincidence that Gold-Age, previously had been the victim of Credit Card
fraud in relation to Paypal.

The secret Service, not always able to select the right target, then
proceeded to raid Gold-Age, the victim, and confiscated their accounts,
paperwork and systems including hardware. Of course the real criminals who
perpertrate credit card fraud are still free.

Parker Bradley is now in the unenviable position of having to pick up the
pieces and try to get his business back together again with customers
screaming at him for money (as of course it makes no differece to the
secret service that they have interupted a going concern and frozen
accounts, yet the victim is innocent and no charges have been laid) yet
with a lack of equipment and historical records.

Hence the comment by RAH, 'Ask the secret service for the money', since
they have commandeered it, illegally I might add.

Check over the archives of the discussion list. There are plenty of
referecnes explaining in full detail, also if you go to
http://www.gold-age.net/ it is also explained there.

Please tell me this is a joke. One problem with the Fe'ral gummit is that
statements that we should be able to assume are jokes can be completely
serious, so I have to ask.
