I stand corrected. Thank you James. But is it not true that G&SR owns

[e-gold-list] E-Gold

2001-10-07 Thread Ben Legume

don't forget also that if large numbers of people are selling
(redeeming) their e-gold for whatever reasons (higher value, concerns
about safety of deposits, people are broke and need their money in a
way they can spend it etc.), some of the bars will need to be sold by
E-Gold to cover their payments via Omnipay.

Interesting points about E-dinar and the UAE however. Personally I
doubt much will come of it. Afghanistan isn't particularly popular
with most of the moslem world, nor are they arabic. Many people were
predicting the same sorts of things about the 'arab world' rising up
against the west during the Gulf war. It never happened. Many of the
most powerful 'moslem' nations are quite moderate (for the most part)
or even secular (Egypt, turkey and Indonesia spring to mind).

apologies for the lack of capitalisations, this keyboard is being
difficult.

[e-gold-list] e-gold / SR ??

2000-12-25 Thread major bosco

Now this is interesting - comparison's of SR and e-gold and how they are
different?

from the gold economy:

"Many of you are confused. You know what E-Gold is and how it works. But
this Standard Gold stuff? What is it? Why complicate matters. So there is a
new business on the block that looks like it is competing with E-Gold, the
new Standard Reserve. It has its own gold - Standard Gold. Why create a new
gold, new digital stuff?"

I think maybe TGE is the party confused - as Standard Reserve is no more
then a Re-issuer of e-gold. SR does not have its own gold as you state in
your article, it has e-gold which it buys at a steep discount (because the
owner of e-gold also has a equity ownership position in SR) - and then
re-issues the e-gold as SR gold.

Therefore SR is no more then a clone of e-gold, sure, SR has more features
and more options available than e-gold - but, in the long run, as long as SR
is simply "Re-named" e-gold they shouldn't tell everyone that they are
Completely Unique.

Merry Christmas.

[e-gold-list] E-gold password

2001-03-30 Thread Ben Legume

There's another possibility to those suggested (a Trojan or a fake
web page) to how people's passphrases might have been compromised. A
lot of people probably keep a file somewhere on their PC
called 'passwords', or even use one of those programs MS and others
offer to 'remember' all your passwords.

Anyone doing so is a fool, as it is analagous to keeping a piece of
paper with your PIN number in your wallet with your card. If someone
accesses your PC remotely whiel you are online, and there are
programs such as BackOrifice which allow this, they can simply search
for phrases such as 'E-gold' and 'Password'.

While it might not matter enormously if people find out passwords to
your favourite porn sites, your geocities page or your Yahoo Clubs,
passwords to your e-gold, stockbroker or online bank are obviously
far more lucrative for them.

The solution is obvious, don't put your password anywhere someone
could find it if they had access to your PC. Don't cleverly write it
backwards, or disguise it as a phone number or whatever it is people
usually do.

I remember being surprised how high the e-gold velocity was. The reasons
seem to be:
1. e-gold is a poor store of value as it gives no interest and charges a
storage fee. People can't wait to exchange it for financial capital with
no sotrage fees that pays interest.
2. use for HYIP and money games.
3. use as a pass through currency -- A wants good, B wants Australian
Dollars, A has Canadian Dollars, A exchanges Canadian dollars for
e-gold, pays B, B exchanges e-gold for Australian Dollars. This may be
used as an annonomising step.
4. Tax haven entranceway -- go to the ATM, take out your pay as cash,
redeposit in market makers account, get e-gold, invest in
offshore/taxhaven programs, tax administrators can't track it.

What would be good would be to see the distribution of spends -- value
of spends under 50 USD worth, number of spends over 50 USD worth, and
work out how much fee revenue e-gold are making.

[e-gold-list] E-GOLD UPDATE

2001-05-14 Thread jessi23111

E-GOLD UPDATE

As you all know from our previous message our e-gold
account had been either
capped or suspended by e-gold with no prior warning
from them.
We have now received a message from e-gold that is in
no way a satisfactory
explanation for their actions. At the same time
although we did ask all
members
not to write to us regarding the e-gold situation
until we were in position
to
give you all some clear answers, we have in fact
received many emails from
members who have said they have had lots of problems
in the past with their
e-
gold accounts and some have said they have lost money
by sending their
e-gold
to companies that have had their accounts frozen by
e-gold.
In our last message we did say that we were reluctant
to open an account in
the
first place with e-gold and it now seems we should not
have given way to the
members we have who wrote in pleading with us to open
an e-gold account.
Please read the notes below so that we can make our
position clear to all
members.

We no longer have an e-gold account for receiving
payments from members;
neither do we have an account for making e-gold
payments back to our
members.

We will not be in contact with e-gold again for any
reason and under no
circumstances will we consider using them again in the
future.

The e-gold account has been removed from our website
funding page, please do
not try to send any more funds to us via e-gold.

We have received 4 messages from members who have
asked if we would keep the
account with e-gold open until they can get their
funds out, and in one case
someone even suggested that we should open anonymous
accounts with e-gold
just
to keep using the system for as long as possible,
apart from the fact that
these messages are based on selfishness and nothing
else we have no
intention
of dealing with e-gold ever again.

A member has wrote asking if we will send back the
e-gold payment he has
just
made and also one that he made last month including
any profit, we cannot
send
anything back to a member via e-gold so you will need
to tell us how you
want
to receive payments.
On the question of repayments of capital any member
can request a refund of
their capital but they have to give the 90 days notice
as shown on the
website

Bank transfers: In the past we have only sent bank
transfers out to our
members
if they have either a Paritate or Citunion account,
within the next month we
will change this so that we will be in a position to
send transfers to any
Bank
account of your choice, please note that any transfer
costs involved in this
will have to be deducted from your account.

In the reply from e-gold they have said that they have
received emails from
people who have said that e-gold that they have sent
us has not been put on
their accounts, this is not true the only e-gold
payments that we did not
allocate to accounts are those that came in to us with
no name or ID number
in
the e-gold memo box and these were sent straight back
to the account they
originated from apart from these there was one other
payment that came in
where
e-gold did not show the dollar amount on our statement
but with this one we
credited the member with more than he sent in e-gold.
Should there be any doubt on how we dealt with
thee-gold payments we
received
we can and will publish everyone of our e-gold
statements from day one on
our
website and send a full list out to all the members.

Our position on the e-gold situation is clear so
please do not write to us
on
this subject, all you need to do now is tell us how
you want to be paid when
you request a payment out from your account.
Any further developments will be sent out as a member
update and will be
posted
on the website.

"I would suggest you open an OSGold account to make
payments with. They have never frozen an account for
no reason at all. I have been exceedingly happy with
their service."

[e-gold-list] E-Gold Purpose!

2001-07-29 Thread SnowDog

> Unless I've forgotten one, [with the usual exception of HYIPs], the

> sites On The Internet:

erp...

> * thegoldcasino (casino games accounted in grams of egold)
> * tarasvirtualstudio (I partially jest: but porno is of course the
> biggest commerce
> sector on the 'regular' web, so its
> significant for egold, too)
> * xodds (clever 'fixed odds' financial market instruments)

You're forgetting all the web-hosts, of which there are about a dozen,
including Best Host 1 which runs a very professional Host, and has been
taking e-gold since 1999. You're also forgetting about a couple of hundred
mom and pop businesses, selling from the house.

More importantly, and this is my opinion, you're not going to see consumer
merchandise sold with e-gold until there is a LOT MORE OF IT. The reason is
simple. Would you rather buy a CD or a TV using e-gold, or using your credit
card? E-Gold is far too valuable to be given away like that.

I believe that E-Gold's niche is in B-to-B transactions and international
settlement. Imagine how easy it now is to hire programmers and web-designers
overseas, have them build a website and pay them with e-gold. Didn't
Gaithman's just do this a few months ago? Don't YOU, JP, pay assistants with
e-gold? As an international currency, e-gold is EXCEPTIONAL, and this is
what is building the system now. I don't believe that there are MORE HYIPs
operating with e-gold now than there were last year, and yet there is over
TWICE as much gold in the system. The DDU is shutting them down, whenever
they can, and for the most part, only small-time HYIPs are left. Isn't this
correct?

There are two other primary functions of e-gold that are being overlooked:

1) E-gold is backing for other e-currencies. Didn't you hear that Standard
Reserve just signed up TWO Cruise Lines with 160,000 employess, ALL OF WHOM
will be given ATM GAP cards allowing them to send money to their families
back home. In this regard, e-gold can play a role as backing for an
international payment medium for a large number of people.

2) E-Gold allows individuals to buy large amounts of gold at a very low
price, and store it without having to rent a safety deposit box, with the
convenience of being able to sell it easily. In this regard, e-gold is used
as an investment, and I believe there are a lot of people using it this way.
Try buying gold coins at a local coin shop They'll frequently charge you
over 10%; sometimes 20%. Now imagine the pain of having to physically take
those coins to a safety-deposit box, hold them and then haul them back to
the coin shop to sell them when you're ready. Imagine how uncomfortable a
lot of people are, walking around with thousands of dollars of cash in their
pockets after doing this. E-Gold solves this problem.

So, if you believe that e-gold's purpose is to be a currency for consumer
merchandise, then I think you're looking at a future at the end of a long
chain of other purposes that will come first. This is why you don't have
that many businesses accepting e-gold for consumer merchandise now. You
will, though -- later.

For the first time, the number of e-gold accounts with over 10 grams of gold
have exceeded 14,000. I count accounts with 10 grams or more, because I
think that 10 grams is an amount of e-gold which will definitely NOT be
abandoned by the owner as insignificant. Note, also, that there are now over
56,600 accounts with over 1 gram of e-gold. These are record high numbers,
though the bar count is still at 126, well below it's maximum.

[e-gold-list] E-gold automation

2003-07-18 Thread Jonathan Boles
Hello,

I have a minor question about the e-gold automation. I'm using wininet.dll
to access the confirm.asp URL (and bypassing preview.asp by putting
ignore-rate-change = y), and the first spend works fine, but subsequent
spends give an error along the lines of "you have already confirmed the
spend...". How do I fix this? I imagine it has something to do with a cookie
being set during the first spend that's preventing the rest from succeeding.
But in previous automation systems I've used curl+openssl; this is the first
time I've used wininet.dll.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

[e-gold-list] e-gold bug

2003-09-30 Thread Ragnar
JRW,

When one checks the history in September in one's e-gold account
(I checked this in account 320818 (Liberty Impact), one can pull
up September 31. This gives an error, of course. This is a
small issue, but eventually the "31" should be deleted as a
choice in the calendar.

2001-10-15 Thread Joseph Firmino

I don't want to sound like a whiner and in fact we are grateful to have our
site included in the e-gold directory. I just wish whoever is responsible
would get the URL right.
www.loavesandfishessoupkitchen.com

It's a re-direct to http://home.att.net/~lfsk/main.html since we changed
locations awhile back to avoid a price change at the other place. Anyway I
contacted e-gold a while back (twice), no answer, maybe I used the wrong
contact.

I always think a dead link on a page conveys a hole in the head attitude.
What should I do?

[e-gold-list] e-gold SCI

2001-12-14 Thread RJ LeVeque

Hi everyone. I originally sent this to the TECH list, however, I have not
seen it post... thought I'd send it here.
- - - -
- - - -
I need to know if there is anything better than the simple defaiult SCI that
is provided.

We index new sites everyday. The sites that provide products or services for
e-gold seem to mostly be using the default SCI, which has a "HUGE" security
hole... by default.

The common webmaster does not realize that this hole exists. Any simple
WaReZKiDDie can "bop" right into any of these sites that are using the
standard SCI.

I'm sure this has been topic before, I don't see how it could never have
been...

PAYMENT_URL= <- COMMON ERROR IS THE DESTINATION. Extreme security
breach.

Any common webmaster using the default SCI is vulnerable AND will lose money
on lost purchases.

The only way around this is by manually verifying each purchase OR having
scripting written to verify each purchase. Most webmasters do not even
REMOTELY realize this... this is the ONLY aspect of e-gold that is a
definite NEGATIVE!

I have an idea/suggestion. Rather than third party programmers getting
involved to develop scripting for webmasters, e-gold should develop a
"Webmasters" or "Merchants" section, accessible to each account holder from
within their account. This section could provide webmasters with
PAYMENT_URL= options to define from within their account. This could
eliminate this security hole completely thus providing webmasters with an
instant service activation option rather than "Please allow 24
hoursblah-blah-blah".

I honestly do not think that this should be dealt with by third party
programmers. This should be developed and implemented by e-gold AT e-gold.

Any information regarding this subject would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

[e-gold-list] e-gold SCI

2001-12-16 Thread RJ LeVeque

>
> Viking Coder
>
> http://www.two-cents-worth.com/?VikingCoder
>

I have made a serious mistake by incorrectly utilizing terminology. I pretty
much figured that by publicly discussing this that more webmasters that are
incorrectly using the SCI would step up and participate in the
discussion but, I was wrong. It seems as though I am the only individual
here that wants to actually remedy this, how should I say, error in
implementation? Is that better? I guess what actually has happened is that I
opened Pandora's Box again...

I guess I really need to re-evaluate my desire to actually help people, for,
opening my mouth I have placed a target on my forehead for every pro
webmaster to shoot at... yep, I learned a truly valuable lesson in the last
3 days, and that lesson is: Do not request assistance of the pros as they
all feel that if you do not know the answer via telepathy then you deserve
what you get.

I feel sorry for the novice webmaster seeking to utilize e-gold for products
and services via the default SCI (please do not attack me for that, I have
nothing against e-gold) as there is no message of warning on the SCI page
AND requesting help from experienced webmasters has proven a rather
interesting experience indeed...

I am going to put it so simple this time, try to follow me.

-
...AND I QUOTE from: http://www.e-gold.com/unsecure/sci_home.html

How easy is it to implement the e-gold shopping cart?

It's as simple as using this HTML and customizing the RED fields to match
your own information:
-

HELLO? No warning on that page, just a recommendation to read other
information. The novice webmaster simply follows the simple instructions
presented and ends up with, what, that's right; a page with the destination
of their products and/or services right there! God forgive them for being
novices or lacking experience or expertise. Some people just seem to forget
where they started and that they were also inexperienced at one time.

Ok? Enough? Understand? I hope so, I'm really getting tired of this thread.
If I could have, for a moment, seen the future of this thread, I would have
kept my mouth shut as the responses are overly critical and lack any
assistance to the novice webmaster... only seems like most simply want to
throw their 2 cents in for reasons I still cannot fathom. Yes, I did say,
"hello everyone" and I am now regretting it... yet another mistake on my
behalf. I'll NEVER do it again, trust me!

Where anyone is getting the fact that I should write this script or that I
am seeking this assistance for myself is way off base. I, personally, have
been looking into Dmitry Salnikov's script and it's beginning to look like
he's thinking the same thing I am: default SCI is being used incorrectly and
people need HELP! Smart man! Possibly likes to help others! I was merely
seeking references for webmasters that do not know about this AND that are
completely vulnerable.

Enough is enough. If I am still misunderstood, then so be it.

Drop the shields, hold yer fire, we're supposed to be a community. Does one
slam their neighbor for saying, "I'm going to chop my grass" rather than
"I'm going to mow my lawn"?

Peace!

[e-gold-list] e-gold -> OSGold ???

2002-01-08 Thread Craig Spencer

There seems to be a recent flood of solicitations (some of them
from familiar people and many from unknowns) trying to promote
the rest of us to send them e-gold in return for OSGold. Does
anyone have any insight into this curious development?

If it was just unknowns I could put it down to scam artists
trolling for suckers. But the fact that some reputable people
are doing it leads me to think that it is more than this.

One obvious thought is that they, or the perhaps people who are
supplying them with discounted OSGold in quantity, know
something (like the imminence of OSGold's collapse) that leads
them to want to dispose of their OSGold and store their value in
a currency that is actually redemable in gold and therefore
intrisically valuable.

[e-gold-list] e-gold statistics

2002-03-12 Thread C. Cormier - Ormetal Inc.

The 400,000+ accounts in e-gold is great, but there are two
statistics that I would like to see improve.

1) The ratio of funded to total accounts

This ratio has been shrinking for a long time and now stand at 0.34
way below its peak of 0.45 in early 2001. This means that only
34% of all account are funded compared to 45% early last year.

2) The average funded balance. It is now only 12.44g per account.
This number has been going down for years, but since the
beginning of the year, is now showing sign of some stability.

The question is how to interpret these numbers. Why are there so
many unfunded accounts? Why are there so few grams in the
funded accounts?

[e-gold-list] e-gold shortage??

2002-03-15 Thread Kevin Jones

Since most market makers are on this list would you care comment on the
following:

Taken from evocash email

>>The problem seems to be caused by the fact that the
wholesale rates charged by e-gold/omnipay are increasing to the point that
exchange makers are unable to buy e-gold and still make a profit when
selling
the e-gold to their clients at their current exchange rates. It is
important
to understand that all exchange makers must make some type of profit in
order
to stay in business. Therefore it is apparent that exchange makers will
soon
be forced to raise their exchange rates in order to fulfill their customers
e-
gold orders. >>

1) To this doesn't make sense unless omnipay is being dumb enough to
"restrain" offer
2) Unless there is something I do not understand there can't be a physical
shortage of e-gold it is simply an electronic entry that must eventually be
"met" with physically with real gold in it's vault.
3) last time I checked gold price I didn't get the idea we were in a buble
around $1000/oz...nop we were still dowm a few bucks. I think there is still
some physical gold left to buy around :-)

I would really like your inputs guys that are close to the "bottleneck"

So again unless I completly missed something either someboday is in trouble
or omnipay is flexing muscle on it own community or simply can't handle the
growth right now.

I find it strange that evocash is coming with this while this is something I
haven't heard or seen anywhere else and I follow the DGC world fulltime.

Or in simple phrase...what's going on?

Thanks
Kevin

Notice, too, that E-Gold is back to being tied with their all-time high

their all-time record high count for accounts with more than 10 grams, each.
Growth has been strong the past couple of months. They should be breaking

I have been asking all online vendors if they accept e-gold payments
prior to purchasing in other means. I have yet to get one to accept

industry.

If we all do business with a common online vendor maybe we can team up
and all email them to ask for e-gold payment system.

www.cdw.com is my next attempt!

I have contacted Wal-mart

http://www.componentsource.com
http://www.dream-com.com/

And a couple others just this week. And I am not an exchanger nor will
I make anything other than possibly 25% of the spend fee.

Is anybody else having problems processing e-gold spends? I keep getting
the same message for the last 3 hours:

Cannot confirm spend, the error is:

Hi:

The latest e-Gold fraud just crossed my e-desk. They can't even spell

The usual crap about entering your account and passphrase. This time they
even have the turing number.

It looks like they went to merchants who use the system, as they have our
Automated Press Releases service which accepts e-Gold. When you look at

This is without a doubt the very best E-Gold casino on the

[e-gold-list] e-gold growth rates...

2000-12-02 Thread Jeff Fitzmyers

By my calculations, in the last ~12 days the total number of accounts
has increased 10% and the number of funded gold accounts has increased 15%.

That is a growth rate of about 0.8% per day. Say the rate averages about
0.4% per day. By the end of the month, e-gold could have over 300,000
accounts, 150,000 of them in gold.

Interesting, no?

[e-gold-list] E-gold scam survey

2000-12-18 Thread CCS

I did a little research. I did a simple search of the web
for "e-gold". It returned over 3000 hits. Looking at the
first 20 hits there were 4 obvious scams (and 4 other ads for
internet gambling sites). If this extrapolates to the whole
sample then there would be over 600 scams involving e-gold.

It gives one pause. A substantial part of the growth in e-gold
activity may be driven by scamsters.

[e-gold-list] e-gold ACCT FUNDING

2001-02-02 Thread peelpee

Without wishing to slight any market makers or proxy merchants (no
apologies to wannabe regulators), the recent question re: e-gold account
funding posted on this list led me to this notion.

Simple, inexpensive funding of accounts is possible, assuming a willing
buyer and seller, using any in-place e-commerce marketing interface
applications and existing credit/debit protocols, e.g., I have e-gold I
am willing to spend on goods or services, and my acquaintance who wants
to buy e-gold has a debit/credit card he is willing to use to pay for
the goods I desire in exchange for my e-gold..

I direct my friend to the site offering the goods I desire, preselected
by me with a shopping cart or wish list (see Amazon.com for an excellent
wish list example), he springs for the stuff with a credit card and I
click him the corresponding amount of e-gold.

No middleman fees or charges (except the max. 50¢ spend charge)! Good
deal for buyer and seller.

Everything is in place to use this method right now at hundreds of
merchants online. All you need to take advantage of this type of trading
is someone you can trust to cut the deal with.

Oh, I don't know Craig ... example, a britney spears fan club could
go britneyspearsfans.com -- using a trademark in their web site name
-- without that being a trademark infringement.

A web site could be called "wesellfordparts.com" without problem, I
think .. yoyu're certainly not "not allowed" to "even mention" a
trademark on a communication. You just need a disclaimer.

Example, at http://bananagold.com, e-gold(r), Amazon(r), and numerous
other trademarks are mentioned freely -- in all cases there's the
usual legal disclaimer at the bottom that they remain trademarks of
corporations. I don't see that using it in the domain address (or
say the page header) is very different.

[e-gold-list] e-gold web site

2001-03-05 Thread Chris Rasch

I just discovered e-gold within the past month, and I think it's a
wonderful service. The growth rate of e-gold's user base astonishes
me: 3,000 -> 130,000 users in 18 months. Even so, I would love to see
the

Several people have commented recently regarding their dissatisfaction
with e-gold's current website. Here's some representative comments:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here's my observations of e-gold's site, and some suggestions for
improvement. Please note, I've not used e-gold's site much yet--my
comments are based mostly on e-gold's main page at
http://www.e-gold.com. Also, if I'm in error, I would welcome
correction.

To illustrate the changes I'd like to see, I've also taken the liberty
of mocking up an "e-gold makeover" site. It's available on my web
site at http://www.openknowledge.org/egold/. Note that except for the
"Discuss" link (points to a bulletin board at www.greenspun.com) all
of the mockup links point to a dummy page.

Most of my analysis regarding why certain changes should be made stem
from Jakob Nielsen's research on usability. See his Alertbox columns
at http://www.useit.com.

DOWNLOAD SPEED

According to Nielsen, the single biggest feature that users want from
web sites is fast download time. Note that many of the most popular
sites--Yahoo, Amazon, Google--have very simple designs, and
consequently, fast download times. Quoting Nielsen:

"The basic advice regarding response times has been about the same for
almost thirty years [Miller 1968; Card et al. 1991]:

0.1 second is about the limit for having the user feel that the
system is reacting instantaneously, meaning that no special
feedback is necessary except to display the result.

1.0 second is about the limit for the user's flow of thought to stay

uninterrupted, even though the user will notice the
delay. Normally, no special feedback is necessary during delays of
more than 0.1 but less than 1.0 second, but the user does lose the
feeling of operating directly on the data.

10 seconds is about the limit for keeping the user's attention
focused on the
dialogue. For longer delays, users will want to perform other
tasks while waiting for the computer to finish, so they should be
given feedback indicating when the computer expects to be
done. Feedback during the delay is especially important if the
response time is likely to be highly variable, since users will
then not know what to expect
"
(See http://www.useit.com/papers/responsetime.html)

I did a very unscientific study of how long it takes for the
e-gold.com site to load over a 56.6 kbps dial-up collection.
After each trial I emptied the cache. (I'm using Netscape 4.72 on
Redhat
6.2, a pretty standard configuration, at least among the geek crowd.)
I counted the page as completely downloaded when all of the content
was visible, even if the "download indicator" was stilling going.
Both comparisons were done between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday
night (MST). I'm located in Idaho, but my site is hosted in San
Jose.

Trial Time (s)
1 29
2 35
3 30
4 22

In contrast, it took on average about 5 seconds for the makeover
site to load:

Trial Time (s)

Average: 5.4 seconds

The need for fast pages is not likely to go away anytime soon.
According to the ICONOCAST newsletter for August 17, 2000 reported the
following distribution of Internet subscribers in the United States
(as reported by Nielsen at http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9703a.html) :

[e-gold-list] e-gold passphrase hygiene

2001-03-30 Thread James M. Ray

At 5:14 AM -0600 3/30/01, SnowDog wrote:
[.]

Folks, I'd say "please NEVER access an account over a computer
you're not SURE is secure," but I don't follow that advice myself, so
it wouldn't be honest. What I do is have an account with very little
gold in it (never more than about fifty bucks worth). I access it on
my Sprint PCS phone (Sprint is the 'man in the middle,' so you are
trusting a telco and all its technical staff, and the "crypto" on these
phones is only 64 bit) and on others' computers, which I generally
assume to be insecure.

Please remember that it's NOT a virus (and increasingly common)
for a boss to install keystroke-monitoring software on employees'
computers. They own their computers and have the right to install
anything they want on them, but now they might also inadvertently
own your account number and passphrase, a bad thing. :( Below I
have put a few other (totally unofficial!) security suggestions. Feel
free to add to them if you can (good suggestions rewarded).

Also, please remember that just because something isn't being
talked-about doesn't mean it isn't in the process of improving in
the future. Still lots of DO-ing going on if you know where to look,
and most of the DO-ers tend *not* to be talkers...

Security isn't a one-time thing, it's more a process and a mindset.

[e-gold-list] e-gold for Conan?

2001-04-12 Thread peelpee

Hello,

Any e-gold out there interested in making a bid in grams (of any
e-metal, actually) for a paperback set of 7 early 70's editions of the
"Conan the Barbarian" novels?

Kosher query on list? Who knows, I'm bored!

Still gaga with e-gold after 2 years,

[e-gold-list] e-gold in Espanol?

2001-04-16 Thread James M. Ray

Hi all. I've been contacted by a nice person in Peru, who'd like to exchange
(Pesos?) for some grams of e-gold. He's making a valiant attempt at English
(and I fear what would result from my trying the same thing in Spanish!) so
if anyone would like me to forward him a message, I'll be happy to do it.

Obviously, South America (if you can get by the language barrier) might be
a lucrative market for some of you. Thanks.

[e-gold-list] e-gold vs. GoldMoney

2001-04-17 Thread Paul Vahur

Ken Griffith wrote:

... or being used as a backing for other currencies. For example, lets say
that DigiGold is backed 75% with e-gold and 25% with NASDAQ stocks (not the
NASDAQ company stocks, but stocks traded there, you know what I mean). In
this case the backing is more than 75%, but it's not exactly 100% either, it
will be 100% plus-minus something. This setup will allow the issuers to make
profit (with the risk of making loss).

> The article merely gave GoldMoney a star for apparently

I think that e-gold and GoldMoney names really express their natures:

e-gold - electronic gold. Like physical gold it can be used in fractional
reserve banking (frb) and like physical gold it won't lose in it's value due
do the fact of being used in frb. Can also be used asmeans of exchange.

GoldMoney - electronic money backed 100% with gold. Unlike physical gold
can't (is not allowed to) be used in frb, thus enabling it to be used only
as a means of exchange.

Any comments from the reps. of e-gold & GoldMoney?

[e-gold-list] e-gold -> Paypal exchange

2001-04-17 Thread Viking Coder

Had an idea for a new service market makers could provide...

e-gold to Paypal exchange

This would mainly be used to pay off auctions where the seller won't
e-gold but will accept Paypal. Otherwise, I have to get the e-gold
OutExchanged and sent to me. Then, I have to purchase a money order and
mail it to the sender.

This won't subject the market maker to any level of fraud, because the
transaction is going from hard payment to soft payment (on the May scale).
The market maker doesn't have to worry about being stung by fradulent
payments.

[e-gold-list] e-gold customer service?

2001-05-09 Thread Graham Kelly

Gentlemen,
This email is in immediate response to a customers complaint.
Apparantly, yesterday, after I funded his account, my customer was compromised
by the owner of e-gold account 305107, and the amount of $600 was stolen.
(batch 2569064)

As the President of the Alliance, Doug, Reid, I am asking you to take
immediate action to re-cover Mr Warminski's gold. This action is not
beyond the spirit of g-commerce, but certainly may infringe upon the
policies of e-gold/G&SR/Omnipay. If so, and in the interest of the entire
gold economy, let's go with the spirit of the law, and change the offending
policies. Immediately, I require the perpetrators account to be blocked,
and at least the funds in question to be returned to the rightful owner.
Any other action, or non performance, by you guys will signal that you
are aiding and abetting the perpetrators.

Did he make a mistake. Yes. He quite by accident logged into Qgold, or
similar. Strong Customer Service, shown by e-gold, would go down very
nicely, just about NOW. Why is it that OSGOLD are growing by leaps and
bounds? They have STRONG customer service, 18 hour/day online reps, and
good customer protection policies, and they DON'T protect the thieves
and crooks. Gets it everytime...

Doug, Reid, the major reason why I am in the US is to have a meeting
with you about these very same issues. My request for an appointment
7 weeks ago, has obviously been ignored, perhaps overlooked? My phone
number is 310-215-1000. Doug, Reid, call me now, and lets make an appointment.

Incidently, I will remain in the US indefinately, until a meeting is
convened.

Mr. Warminski: Can I suggest you use Standard Reserve or OSGold in future?

[e-gold-list] E-Gold policing accounts?

2001-05-10 Thread Gerardo S. Esguerra

Okay, I know this is an HYIP, and I know it could be a scam, BUT I AM NOT
PROMOTING IT.

My question is the apparent interference by E-Gold, as mentioned below,
"E-gold and Yahoo are denying us access to our accounts because of what
they say, "might be illegal activity.""

Must E-Gold question our accounts if it has a lot of traffic?

This is quite disturbing.

Another program, Income Ventures, also has trouble with E-Gold for
apparently the same reason. (I would not really classify Income Ventures
as similar to other HYIPs.)

What's behind all this?

Hello all,

I have been thinking about setting up a simple e-gold (well, any GBC with low

hold a random draw, and pay the winners e-gold account 0.90 grams.

So, the first thing I always do when I get a half-baked idea like this, I search
the internet to see if someone else has done it. And I find reference to a couple
things that no longer exist. The most notable is "RealGoldLotto".

Anyway, my question is, why do these site no longer exist? Was there no interest?
Were they pure scams? Were they shut down by e-gold or thier local governments?
Should I abondon this idea, or continue to pursue it?

[e-gold-list] e-gold accepted hosting

2001-08-18 Thread Keith Mander

I am currently thinking about setting up my own e-gold accepted (only)
budget hosting company, as I have the resources to do so.

My planned offerings include;

$1 POP email account (on my domain)
$3 subdomain hosting + POP email account (15Mb space, CGI, FTP etc.)
$5 domain hosting (with same hosting features as above) + 5 POP accounts
on that domain + 1 subdomain
$10 pro account with domain hosting inc + 25 POP accounts + 25 subdomains

I have an employed programmer who could handle making the whole site and
do the e-gold verification and automated account setup on my servers...
but before I go ahead, I thought that I would ask you guys what you think
- would it be a success? easy to promote just in egold directories? good
packages?

I really would appreciate any kind of feedback via this discussion group

[e-gold-list] e-gold and WebMoney

2001-08-28 Thread Chief Executive Officer

Hi, everybody,
you were talking about Western Union and mentioned my "native" payment
system:)
I have some coments.

DS>Something like the scenario below does exist
DS>in Russia and other Russian speaking countries
DS>with WebMoney Internet currency.

Thank you, Dmitry for mentioning our moderate success in this :)

>CVV> I can't see this requiring more than a public computer terminal and
>CVV> minimal computer literacy on the parts of both the customer and the
>CVV> employee of the check cashing place. This could be made even simpler
by
>CVV> the issuance of individual passcards for e-gold accounts, which could
then
>CVV> be swiped at the POS.

However, there is always a problem of trust! Look, what if you come to this
small office,
open e-gold site, enter your acc# and password and make some kind of
transfer...
This is all done on UNKNOWN computer which can easily write down all your
keystrokes,
so it can be used later on by owner of this computer. It's even worse than
surrender your credit
card number toeverybody, because e-gold payments are IRREVERSIBLE. That is
the problem.

DS>WebMoney official site in Russia is --
DS>http://www.webmoney.ru/

Dmitry, you are not comletely informed :) There is also an english version
of this site:\
http://www.wmtransfer.com (actually our system is named WebMoney Transfer)

DS>Individual scratch-off passcards for webmoney accounts
DS>are sold in several online stores and through representatives.
DS>These accounts contain various values up to 100 US dollars.

I would like to add some necessary info: these scratch-cards can be
instantly
debited to any WebMoney account ("purse") just by opening the page on site
and
entering it's number and pin, hidden under the scratch stripe.

DS>Webmoney are used to buy banner impressions,
DS>to pay for remote consulting or web design services,

I would also mention the "digital merchandises" hypermarket
http://www.exaccess.ru (english version is comming soon).

DS>to lend or borrow money on investments exchange,

Thank you, I'm proud you've mentioned my modest efforts, because I happen to
head this exchange -
INternet Direct-access eXchange (INDX) http://www.indx.ru/eng :) By the way,
several e-currencies:
e-gold, goldmoney, srusd and sraug are traded in lots on this exchange as
well as shares in internet-ventures.

DS>The number of webmoney users in Russia is quite large also,

It can be seen as well as turmover in real time on
http://www.wmtransfer.com/systatistics.shtml
page. We think this type of disclosure to be absolutely necessary for all
payment systems.

DS>They can be converted to or from e-gold also,

I have to mention that e-gold is converted INSTANTLY to the exchange
instruments 0.1EGOLD.MTL
and back (fully automated 24/7/365 service) in the Trading system of the
Excahnge https://tradee.indx.ru
(see "e-gold" page in "Assets" section of T/C), these insruments can be
bought and sold futher on
as well as gg (1.0GMONY.MTL) and SRAUG/SRUSD (1.0SRAUG.MTL / 010SRUSD.CUR)
for WebMoney
(clearing currency of the Exchange), however gg input/output is not yet
automated (next monday
is a deadline for this) and Standard Reserve in/out is not automated just
because of the lack of
available interface (I don't understand their policy to hide it from
developers!!!).

Sincerely Yours, Alexander V. Fedotov

[e-gold-list] E-gold debit card

2003-06-30 Thread FileMatrix
James, you didn't understand me. There is no egold on any card! You don't
have to worry about the security of the egold because it is all on your
computers!

The card is a simple key, it contains just a user name and a password. When
you go into a shop, the card is put into the E-gold device and you punch in
the cost in USD (for example). The device sends the transaction to the
E-gold system (the site) together with the two accounts (user name and
password): the buyer's and the merchant's. No one but the device knows the
passwords, which are read from the (secure) cards. Thus, the transfer of
money is performed in USD, just as if the buyer would spend "USD worth" from
his very own computer. The conversion in grams of gold is performed by the
E-gold system, as usual.

"If the merchant already has an e-gold account I see no need to involve a
plastic card"

You need to have a card only for "real life merchants" because this way the
user doesn't have to remember or to write his password, and so take any
risk of the password being intercepted.

The balance limit is put only for the E-gold accounts associated with the
debit cards, but is not required; however, you should have a special
attribute for these accounts, in your computers. Still, if someone tampers
with the E-gold device and intercepts the buyers password, the E-gold system
must now not to transfer out of the account too much money in one day... or
you can just tell the user not to fund his debit card account with too much
money at a time. Of course, the card has to be secure, just as a normal
credit card is, and destroy itself if there is any attempt to tamper with
it.

There is no need for GSR to compete with those who fund other cards with
egold, because these businesses can simply transform into a network of
distributors of the E-gold debit card and the authentication device.
Besides, this way they can directly be a part of the system.

I started this because if E-gold becomes... big, I would prefer to go to a
shop with my E-gold card instead of another credit / debit card. This card I
can fund myself by simply transferring egold from my usual account to the
debit card's account. This way, all my spending money are in one place, and
I (as a buyer) have to pay no comission to a credit card company. I simply
buy the debit card, and the merchant buys the authentication device (which
can be programmed with his "real life merchant" account, or he uses another
card - a " real life merchant" card).

... And even more, I can use this card in any country, in any currency!

George Hara

[e-gold-list] E-gold smart card

2003-07-01 Thread FileMatrix
Jim Davidson just pointed out to me that "debit card" generates confusion,
and it should be "smart card". So, I rename my "baby" to "E-gold smart card"
(EGSC).

This system should be tightly integrated with the E-gold systems because of
security reasons, though it's not mandatory.

For example, each EGSC has to be programmed with an E-gold account number
from which the egold is to be transfered to the E-gold account of the "real
life merchant" (RLM). The programming of the EGSC should be done in the
factory. E-gold could reserve, for ESGC, the account numers from 1 to 2
billions. This way, the E-gold system knows that egold can be transfered
only into such an account, or out of it but only to the account of a RLM;
this is just an extra security measure, it's not mandatory.

On the other side, the merchant programms his E-gold authentication device
(EGAD) with his RLM account and a default currency (in which transactions
are done "worth of").

It is not necessary for E-gold to participate into such an action, but it is
necessary to involve it at least for reserving the EGSC account numbers. The
best markets for EGSC are those that don't easily obtain credit / debit
cards because of impossible terms or fraud. With egold there is no worry
since the system is non-repudiable.

I have to say that I have no material or technological means to make this
happen, I just have ideas. I know that there is a guy in Asia, also named
George Hara, who seems to be a millionaire, but I'm not him :( ... yet ;)
