RE: [Elecraft] (Elecraft) K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
I think it's fascinating! Every time this subject comes up, we are off again. At the time, there must have been a thousand column inches about it in the papers and hundreds of hours on the various radio and TV shows, not to mention endless magazine articles! What occurred to me as I first heard that controversy erupt lo' these many years ago after watching that amazing, fuzzy, blurred video from the Moon on that warm June evening in California, was that if it has been me as the first Human being stepping onto the surface of the moon, I'd have been amazed if I could have uttered anything coherent at all. BTW, the VOX on my K2 doesn't work at all!! No matter how loud I scream, nothing happens. (Maybe that's because I always work CW). And Jim, actually what he meant to say was, "That's one small step for *a* man,..." but either he didn't say the "a" or it didn't come out on the audio. Perhaps VOX chopped it off. I don't know. :^) But with that little word "a" in there, the sentence finally makes sense. Just to comment on the VOX question... as discussed in great detail on the Ten Tec reflector this week, the vast majority of folks preferred QSK operation on CW. It is interesting that the vast majority also dislikes using VOX, which is kind of the QSK of SSB when you think about it. That's interesting. Re: [Elecraft] 80m Recieve
David, If L3 and L4 do not peak the signal, you have a problem in the Bandpass Filter for 80 meters - correct that first before looking at the Low Pass Filter. You should find a peak even if there is also something wrong elsewhere. You can bypass the low pass filter by injecting a signal (or connecting an antenna at W1 or W6 so you can concentrate only on the bandpass filter. First check that you have the correct inductors in L3 and L4 - they should be the same type as L1 and L2. Next, check all the capacitors in the 80 meter bandpass filter for proper values and good solder joints (C11, C12, C15 and C16), then check L5 carefully. If everything is correct, it should tune (you should find a peak - although not quite as sharp as the one for 40 meters). To check the relay without even knowing the pin layout, switch to 80 meters and then turn power off - check the resistance from the junction of D6 and D7 to the junction of C11 and C12, also check the resistance from W6 to the junction of C15 and C16 (both these paths should show zero ohms - check the schematic to see the paths). Checking the resistance of the complete path from one point to another checks the soldering too - checking directly at the relay pins may miss a bad solder joint, and soldering is a much more common failure than bad relay contacts. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - > Hello all > K2 #4320 > during recieve alignment 80 meters is very low and l3 > l4 have now effect on the strength of the signal. > Is this in the low pass filter I did a relay reset 065 > but that had no effect ... ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. a No ahhh I don't ah use it ahhh and I don't ahh like it :) I have tried using it mobile but got into problems violating FCC rules when other drivers cut me off. Prefer a boom-mike headset (the original Heil BM10) and a handheld pendant switch and foot switch in parallel. Use one of the original Heil 706 Traveler mobile with my 706MKIIG We used to have a friend Morrie, W6STV, (long ago a SK) who hung out on 3904.8 KHz (don't ask). He had a Drake TR3 with VOX. He usually left the radio on and on that frequency (when he wasn't on 40 with his brother in Minnesota, by golly). His dog had a bed in the radio room by the wood stove and when ever he was home, the dog was usually in his bed. If we wanted to get Morrie on the radio, we would get on 3904.8, whistle a couple of times and call "Brownie" a couple of times. The dog would start barking, which let us know that they were home, and Morrie would hear the dog barking and come to the radio to see who was calling. [Elecraft] VOX
I find the VOX on the K2 to be OK but not great. After decades of CW-only contesting, I release stress by talking back to certain 'offenders'... in a non-complimentary manner. Yep, you guessed it, I was SSB contesting with VOX and verbally expressed my disappointment in the operator's style and he heard me. Also, my wife came in one day and yelled (because I was in headphones) "Dinner is ready!" I was running a string and everyone laughed like hell. Back on point, my FT1000MKV's VOX can be precision adjusted to work perfectly for your mic, voice and style. The K2's adjustments aren't nearly as smooth, but for a QRP radio I think it's fine. I use PTT on my K2. __ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Re: [Elecraft] using a freq standard for the K1
Only if it has locked multivibrator circuitry in it to give you precision markers at 100 Khz intervals. Better yet 10 and 1 khz intervals. Usually it is easy to add a 'divide by 10' circuit externally using a common CMOS chip to get 1 mhz markers. Add another one after that and get 100 khz markers, which will prove usually quite adequate. 73, Sandy W5TVW - Original Message - From: "Lloyd Lachow" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "List Elecraft" Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2004 10:35 AM Subject: [Elecraft] using a freq standard for the K1 |I have a frequency standard by W8DIZ that generates | a signal at 10MHz, 5MHz and 2.5 MHz. RE: [Elecraft] K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
> I am asking for feedback from SSB operators on VOX operation on the K2. > a) Do you use VOX ? Yes, about 95% of the time when running SSB. The microphone I use is a homebrew boom-set that has an electret element. It has plenty of output and triggers the VOX quickly and reliably. I would very much like the K2 to have a dedicated vox on/off control. Having to cycle through the menu, especially on a "hold" type button, is a pain. It is hard to eliminate a sneeze or other sounds not intended for transmission. > b) If not, why not ? I turn VOX off if I'm operating in a noisy environment, such as portable operations when the planes from a nearby airport are taking off in my direction. 73, Gus Hansen Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It's pretty large for its power level (10 watts, IIRC). It should be easy to work on, since there are no ICs, and most of the PCBs can be easily pulled out of the rig. It doesn't draw a lot of power on receive, and much of what it does draw goes to the dial and panel lamps. I put in some resistance to cut that down significantly. It first came out in 1978, and was one of the early all solid state HF rigs from Japan. 73, Mike / KK5F ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] (Elecraft) K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
There seems to be room for a buffering speech processor that triggers the vox when it is sure you are speaking and plays back the preceeding hundred milliseconds, to avoid clipping the first syllable. For extrra credit, resample and speed up to avoid moving the delay to the end. 73, WA5ZNU Leigh ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
Hi Stewart, No I do not use VOX I do not like the inevitable clipping of the first syllable of the over. I especially do not like having to be careful not to speak when I am meant to be listening (its occasionally necessary to shout at the cat, dog, xyl or whatever :-) External noised beyond my control can trip the TX. Finally, I am quite capable of remembering to press the PTT switch before speaking :-) 73, Trev G3ZYY In message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Stewart Baker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes Hi, I am asking for feedback from SSB operators on VOX operation on the K2. a) Do you use VOX ? b) If not, why not ? [Elecraft] (Elecraft) K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
Stewart, I seldom use VOX because of a slight delay in initial response which results in missed words at the start of transmission. I have the latest firmware which is designed to help this problem, still not fast enough. I also do not use VOX when using my Kenwood TS-850S/AT, just don't like it. Hi Tom, Have been in touch with Kevin ( KD5ONS ) , and it seems that the first " ECN " signal that I heard last weekend on 7045 MHz was indeed from Kevin. Strange thing was that you and Kevin were the same strength. give or take. Guess Kevin got up to speed coming down the eastern side of the R. mountains. [Elecraft] 80m Recieve
Hello all K2 #4320 during recieve alignment 80 meters is very low and l3 l4 have now effect on the strength of the signal. Is this in the low pass filter I did a relay reset 065 but that had no effect I have gone back through the soldering of each of the components In the low pass and band pass filter of 80 meters but no avail. I am a little confused about the latching relay I know that the stripe across the front indicates pin 1 but how does the numbering sequence go does it go 123456 down the row and then 789 etc back up to the top. In troubleshooting I was going to verify switching of the low pass filter to try and trace continuity through the circuit in the event I have a bad solder joint. Re: [Elecraft] internal battery and powersupply or external battery
You are correct. The power supply must be about 14.2 volts because of the diode protection in the rig. You loose some voltage across it. Internal battery will not discharge to the power supply because of the diode. Phil K2#370 NRE/COLE Test Center OH-3 [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Philip L. [Elecraft] K2 VOX
Hi Stewart, Have occasionally used VOX with my K2/100 ( 3255 ) for ragchewing and it seems to be OK - but would like an "Anti VOX" in there. Normally use PTT (Foot switch) in say a pile up. Just habit. Use Heil Pro-set Plus straight in - AF pre-amp not required on any band. Hope that this helps.
