Re: ES5MC from Central California with KX1

Great story, Leigh. Being from Southern California, originally, I can
attest to how hard it is to work Europe from there -- well, at least
compared to how easy it is from the Eastern U.S. Doing it with a couple
of watts and an ad-hoc antenna is that much more rewarding!

[Elecraft] K2 VOX - Straw Poll - Follow up - Long

2004-08-19 Thread Stewart Baker
Many thanks to all those who responded to my mail.

I was trying to find from those who were using the K2 VOX, their experiences,
and see if they were similar to mine. Without referring to individual mails
the
comments fell into these main categories.

a) Use CW, don't use SSB, so don't use any VOX !
b) Don't like VOX on any rig, preferring PTT operation.
c) Use VOX sometimes, but prefer to the control of PTT.
d) Mode control to select VOX clumsy.
e) VOX OK when using headset.
f) Background noises trigger VOX e.g Phones, Jets, Kids, Mother in Law etc.
g) VOX cuts off the first syllable of words.
h) Low VOX sensitivity.
i) No VOX gain adjustment.
j) Lack of Anti-VOX.

I think that's covered most, but if I have missed your input please let me know.

Comparing the list with my experiences I found that I agree with most points.
I do not operate CW, and would like to use the VOX on the K2 more frequently.

In my experience the KSB2 board has the following deficiencies in the audio
path:-

1) Low input sensitivity. For some low output microphones there is
insufficient
audio input to the speech compressor U3 leading to a low RF output, and poor
VOX
operation. This sometimes results in the first syllable of a word being lost.
External pre-amps may help, but this can lead to other VOX problems.

2) The VOX detection is derived from the speech compressor. Although in
principle this seems like a good idea, however, it means that ANY signal from
the microphone that is strong enough to activate the compression threshold will
trigger the VOX. So the K2 VOX is very susceptible to background noises.
Most other rigs take the processed speech and VOX trigger signals through
separate paths. That way you can have a good amount of speech processing and
still get reliable VOX operation.

3) Lack of individual adjustment of microphone and VOX gain.
The two adjustments should be independent for the above reasons.

4) Lack of Anti-VOX. This to me is a real pain. It has put me off using the K2
VOX more than anything else. I'm surprised that this did not get more mentions
in the mail. It really fired me into sending the original mail.

Enough moaning !!!

To cut to the chase. I have spent some time thinking about the KSB2 problems
and
after much design work using a circuit simulator have come up with a solution
to
address items 1-4. This solution is at a breadboard stage at present (sitting
next to my K2/100), and is working very well. Although it is far from complete
I
can give some brief details, so you might care to comment.

It will be a PCB that sits above the audio section of the KSB2, connecting via
approx 6 short wires to the KSB2 PCB. It will require 1 track cut and 1
component to be removed from the KSB2 PCB.

It will have the following:-
a) An integral tailored microphone pre-amp with Mic gain adjustable from
0 to +20dB. The input impedance will be 500 ohms.
b) An independently adjustable VOX gain control, driven from the microphone,
and
NOT the speech compressor output.
c) A fully adjustable Anti-VOX function that is derived from the speaker output.

As I said there is still some work to be done, but I will keep the group
informed of my progress.

[Elecraft] KX1-0156 is on sale

2004-08-19 Thread ta2ah
Hi,

I have built KX1 (0156) at first and I love it very much.

A very short time later I build K2 (4288) which became my primary transceiver
know, beside my FT-857 and TS-870.

I am planning to add KPA-100 option to it know.

I am not using my KX1 any more because of my disabilities, therefore I would
like to sell my KX1 (including KXB30, KXPD1 and KXAT1 options and all the
manuals) to finance the KPA-100 option for my K2.

KX1 and its options are in very good condition and work according to their
specifications. Toroids have been wounded by Mychael, AA3WF.

I can ship the any where in the world via UPS, DHL or similar way. The shipment
cost will be paid by me, therefore I am asking
420 USD for them.

If any one interested in please let me know through my e-mail ([EMAIL
PROTECTED]) as off list.

[Elecraft] Thank you for the help!!

2004-08-19 Thread David Steines
Thank you to all those who offered advice on my transmitter alignment problem.
It turns out that I had tuned according to the lower power peak for each
capacitor, hence the low power output. After scrambling the settings and tuning
again, I found a different combination for the inductors, and now I have
constant output over 2 watts.

As for the VFO problem, it appears that the capacitor is actually damaged and
needs to be replaced. After rechecking the solder joints and still being unable
to cure the problem, I removed it from the board and found that part of the
underside had melted and apparently burned. As a first time builder, I think I
might have held the iron too long or brushed the iron against the capacitor.

Nonetheless, all your advice payed off. Thanks so much for the quick replies
and clear explanations--it was a huge help! See you on the air!!

>I'm having some strange experiences aligning the K1 transmitter. After
following the procedure carefully, I put the radio in tune mode, and
properly tuned the inductors for the 30m band. I got a reading of p3.1. I
then started to tune the 20m band, which unfortunately showed p0.1. I
fiddled around with the inductors, but got no power output on this band.
I had a suspicion that the radio wasn't outputting any power, so I
returned to the 30m band, put the radio in tune mode again, and it turned
out that the power reading was now p0.1. I have attempted tuning and
retuning the radio for the past several days on both bands, and sometimes
I am successful. However, only minutes after a successful tuning session,
power output drops to 0.<

>If you have an older K1, they had a problem with the trimming capacitors
needing "set" in that the electrical contact was not up to par - so turn
them around about ten to twenty times. The newer K1's do not have this
problem - but it won't hurt to turn them anyway. Some people could not
align
them at all until they turned them 20 or so turns.<

Dave mentioned tuning the inductors on 20 and 30 meters...If it involves
tuning inductors, the K1 is a 2 band unit and does not have trimmer
capacitors...

Good point Tom,

To be honest I had not even considered that. I have my KPA100 installed with the
KAT100 in an EC2 case.

Looking at the clearance left by the KPA100 in the EC2 case I doubt that there
is enough head room above the KSB2 if the amplifier were mounted in the K2.
There are precious few spaces left to put anything. I need my VOX to work the
way I want, so compromises must be made. I guess the solution could be done in
SMD, but that's rather against the K2 ethic.

[Elecraft] Capacitors

2004-08-19 Thread W9DHI

A couple months ago someone asked about different capacitors and their use
in the Elecraft products. I think this all started when someone was doing a
mod or upgrade and wanted to know if a certain type of capacitor he had in
his junk box would work. There were numerous responses but this months
issue of RadCom (RSGB Magazine), there is an excellent article on the actual
make up and construction of various types of capacitors and their reasons
and uses. If you don't get RadCom definitely find someone who does and read
this article.

RadCom is an excellent Amateur Radio Magazine and I cherish it ton's more
than my QST each month.

[Elecraft] KX1 RX Sensitivity on 20M vs 30M, 40M

2004-08-19 Thread Michael Babineau

Have others noticed less RX sensitivity on the KX1 on
20M as compared to 40M and 30M?

I recall that this was noted in the QRP Quarterly review
of the KX1 a little while back and I have also noticed this
on my own rig, so I am guessing that this is normal.

Sensitivity is still sufficient on 20M but requires
cranking the AF Gain a little higher on 20M
than the other bands to get a similar signal
volume.

Michael VE3WMB

P.S. This came to my attention again last night as I had
to realign the Rig after finally getting around to installing
the 30M module. BTW For such a little board the KXB30
was a real pain in the you-know-where to install!

P.P.S I also put the Elecraft supplied sticker over the opening
on the KXPD1 and it now looks much better !

might JUMP at it.

I suspect the project won't be of much use to nearly as many others, if it
can't be somehow implemented in all K2s...

2004-08-19 Thread Lee Buller
Guys,

I am amazed how dense the K2/100 really is when you take off the right cover to
check to see if the cables are pinched.

A suggestion would be to use double sided sticky tape and stick on on the
KPA100 shield with some sort of header pins to unplug it when you remove the
KPA100. Place it on the shield where it could fit in the K2 box. I am not
sure what would happen to any kind of RF into the audio stage but since
everything is so close in there anyway it might not be a problem. If you have
some controls...gain, antivox, etcthat might be an issue that is
insurmountable.

Just random thoughts from a random guy

Everything has it's place. I believe that my changes to the VOX operation
should
make the K2 ideal for SSB contesting as well as CW. If I did not believe this I
would not be doing the project.

2100 mah NiMH / Rechargeable batteries in the KBT1 for a K1? I just happen to
already have 8 of these batterys prior to installing the KBT1 in my K1. I was
just wondering if they will fit the KBT1 ok.

[Elecraft] kx1 kxb30 install and torroids

2004-08-19 Thread David Toepfer

I knew I should have taken pictures of my kxb30 before I installed it. Before
I started I had heard about nightmares installing this little gem. But when I
got down to it I did not find it all that hard. You just have to leave plenty
of wire and take your time and bend each one so that when it is in place ech
wire will slide straigh in to it's appropriate hole. If I ever end up doing
one for someone else I will remember to take the pics.

The same goes for torroids. The KX1 was my first set of torroids, and again, I
had heard how much people hate to wind them. I was afraid mind were going to
turn out all sloppy and it was going to be a nightmare. It really was not. I
use heat shrink tubing in the hole to hold the turns in place from the inside
and a pair of foreceips to hold the starting end tight. That is something else
I will take picture of the next time I do one.

These pics of course I will publish somewhere on the web for all to benefit.

[Elecraft] kx1 r30 mod / max power question

2004-08-19 Thread David Toepfer
I finally did it and put a 330 in place of the 220 for R30. It made all the
difference. I can not get 2W on internal battery. My only concern is that on
external gel cell power I sometimes get max power of between 4 and 5 W Is this
too much power for the power transistor to handle? I could trim it back, but
then i would have to trim it ahead every time I use internal batteries and I
know that trimmer does not have the turns life of a proper pot.

[Elecraft] ES5MC from Central California with KX1

2004-08-19 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr.
I spent two weeks without a contact, travelling in Southern California
(family trip) except for a operating as W6RO on the Queen Mary, but on
the way back tonight we stopped at my sister's (Ex-WN5UOE) in San Luis
Obispo, and I got out my KX1 and 10 NiMH AA's and threw a 16ft wire on
the floor and a 28ft wire across a few pieces of wrought-iron furniture,
out the window, and into a tree. Around 0600z I worked ES5MC Arvo in
Estonia on 14.030...he was a fluttery 559 and gave me a 519 on the 3rd
call but considering my antenna I was quite pleased.
