[Elecraft] FS - K2, late serial#

2004-08-30 Thread Gary McClellan

I have the following for sale.. K2 serial# 4264
Purchased in May of this year
Finished/On-Air 08 JUN 2004

A beautiful Elecraft K2, built by Moi with the proper quality
ESD soldering equipment and used the pre-wound AA3WF toroids.
This radio aligned/worked perfectly the first time. Puts out rated
10W+ all bands and has the 100W internal amp connectors pre-soldered
on the main board. Has the latest hardware/firmware. Cosmetically
perfect.

Did a great job in FD QRP and have had a ball using it since.
Buying a Orion so can't convience the XYL to let me keep all the
other goodies in the hamshack :-(

Since I am a CW-guy I built the K2 as such - it includes the
KAF2 CW audio filter/clock
KNB2 Noise-blanker

All needed for SSB is to build the SSB board and voila! You
can have some fun and also align it for the additional mode.

Price is 765.00 *firm* - I'll pay shipping/insurance CONUS.
If you're in Arizona I'll be happy to personally deliver it.
Replies off-list please!

Re: [Elecraft] Upgrades to K2 S/N 638

2004-08-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

I would suggest that you review the A to B mod on the Elecraft website
www.elecraft.com (Builders Resource area) before doing anything. Download
the A to B instruction manual and make a decision of which 'optional' mods
to install (I recommend all of them), and if you are not certain they have
been changed already, I strongly suggest you get a new set of IF crystals
and replace them (including grounding on 2 sides near the bottom). If you
want to see all the mods that folks have done to customize their K2s, be
certain to look at the list of mods that Sverre, LA3ZA has complied - Sverre
does an excellent job of keeping that list up to date.

Since the A to B change (SN3000), there have been only a few changes - the
PLL temperature stability mod, the keying waveshape improvement, and the
'really strong' receiver signal handling mod (2 back-to-back 1N4148 diodes).
I can't recall any others at the moment, but of course, you will likely also
want to update the firmware to the latest level (the MPU and KIO must be
replaced to accomodate the keying waveshape mod) - review the K60XV option
information on the Elecraft website to see what other option firmware you
would like to update.

When you are done with all that modification (and it is not really that
difficult - only tedious), you will have a K2 that performs the same as a
brand new one. I have K2 SN 00020 with all the updates as a testimony. You
will not be disappointed - do them all (but complete the K2 as is per the
manual instructions first unless you are an extremely competent builder)!!!

RE: [Elecraft] 12v 0.8Ah gel cells...

2004-08-30 Thread John Clifford
The connector is referred to as a 'Mate-N-Lok'. I believe it is the same
connector that Elecraft uses to plug in the 12v gel cell into the K2's
motherboard.

Some people buy a female (receptacle) Mate-N-Lok (from Mouser, etc., use the
name as a search term on Mouser's website) and make an adapter to Anderson
Powerpoles, a barrel connector, etc., depending on their application.
Others cut the connector off the battery and put their own connector on it.
It's up to you.

I know that one of these cells will fit inside a K1. Has anyone tried to
see if it will fit inside a KX1? I also use 'em with my HTs since they are
a LOT cheaper than AA NiMH cells and easier to recharge in the field (just
plug them into a 12v auto cigarette lighter receptacle -- they can't be
overcharged on 13.8 VDC). Two of them fit inside a cheap digital camera
case, and it's easy to have a spare pair charging while I use a pair.

Like I said, I've got about 40 left so if anyone wants some let me know
ASAP.

[Elecraft] Re: cold/power on/ transmit on/pa hot! software glitch?

2004-08-30 Thread wayne burdick

Stephen,

I recently posted on this topic. It's worth a repeat -- see below.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

I recently discovered that a 20-amp power supply with poor power-up
characteristics can cause some odd indications on power-up of the
KPA100. These indications have been reported by several customers.

Technical Details

If the power supply voltage has a significant "bounce" when first
turned on, going high and then low before stabilizing, the
microcontroller on the KPA100 may take an invalid sample of the
temperature. This can cause the fan to come on at high speed for about
two minutes initially, even if it's not set for "high" fan mode. If you
transmit during this two minutes, you may see "PA HOT" on the LCD. If
you go into the CAL tPA menu entry, you may briefly see "tPA 255" until
the next temperature sample has been taken. Once the temperature has
been reset (or if you've waited for over 2 minutes before
transmitting), the unit should function normally. This start-up anomaly
will not damage the KPA100 or K2 in any way, and you can continue to
transmit with the KPA100.

What to Do?

If you experience the above symptoms, you can take one of three steps:

1. We've just added some self-defense against "bouncy" power supplies
to the KPA100 firmware (revision 1.10). This version is shipping with
all new KPA100 kits. It can also be ordered from our parts/firmware/mod
kits web page:

 http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#fw

or by calling elecraft sales at 831-662-8345.

2. Turn on the K2's power before you turn on power to the KPA100. This
is what I do, and it's why I hadn't noticed the problem before. The
best way to power the K2 separately is to connect a low-current (4A)
backup supply or battery to the K2's DC barrel jack. (Less convenient
would be to run a "Y" cable from the 20-amp supply to the K2's DC
barrel jack, and not connect the KPA100's APP power supply connector
until after powering the K2 up.)

3. If you notice the fan running at high speed at power up, even if
it's set for "nor" or "loHi" mode, you can go into CAL tPA to force the
KPA100 to take a correct reading. It should function normally after
exiting the menu. (Or, you can wait 2 minutes before transmitting.)

RE: [Elecraft] cold/power on/ transmit on/pa hot! software glitch?

2004-08-30 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Check the CAL TPA temperature setting in your MENU, Stephen.

It's been a while and I've forgotten the exact cause, but a number of ops
discovered that the temperature setting was suddenly way off, causing the
fan to run constantly. Somehow the initial setting got over-written.

Roy,

Fortunately, this is definitely not the case. There is no relationship
between SSB ALC action in the K2/100 (controlled by hardware) and the
setting of the RF/ALC metering (controlled by firmware). We just
verified this in the lab. Your specific unit could have an odd problem
that causes this, but we've never seen it before.

If what you described is repeatable, please contact Gary and explain

Well I finally got my copy today almost 1 week later even though
we live in the same state! In his review, SP7HT used 5 kHz data for
BDR and IMD, believing that ARRL's 1 kHz data on their swept graphs was
invalid. In fact, it IS valid (I confirmed this with KC1SX today) and
the results would be quite different had he used the 1 kHz data.

2004-08-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Tom and all,

This method is good technically, BUT...

Since most digital mode software also has provision for PTT (yes, it
requires building a simple interface), I would never advocate the use of VOX
for digital modes except perhaps in an emergency - it is too easy to forget
to turn off the 'Windows' sounds and the noises made by other programs which
will cause 'playing music' on the ham bands!!! Just not a legal thing to do
for amateur radio here in the US. Even if one does not have the PTT
interface, I consider it better to use manual changeover than to transmit
prohibited emissions.

Activate VOX on K2 and put ur fsk software into tx.
Adjust soundcard outout to the point where vox is trigging and holding K2 in
tx.

Set fsk software into rx and check that the K2 is going in rx as well.

The line in has to be muted so K2 AF does not return to mic via PC.

This workes very well for me and the setup act as there was hardware keying.
For this the vox in the K2 works superb. I don't think it's clumsy at all.

Hi Roy,

This is not true. The K2's internal ALC is ALWAYS active on PTT closure,
regardless of where the K2 meter is set.

There is no issue with linearity or overdriving an external linear. If
anything, we are conservative after power up or a band change and err
initially on the low side at the beginning of your first transmission.

Just to make sure, I had Gary check this on his K2/100 a few minutes ago
and everything is OK..

[Elecraft] K2. How to do PSK and RTTY . VOX issues.

2004-08-30 Thread Tom Arntzen
Hi everyone.
Thaught I would share this with those of you who is interessed in digimode.

Abt. 2 weeks ago there was sort of a poll on the vox in the K2.
Well the majority of us like to ptt on ssb , but the vox is very handy in
digimode.

First of all I have centered rttyfilters around 1000hz with fl1 op1 as it has
to be for tx(same as for SSB) , fl2 bw 1000 , fl3 bw 700 and fl4 bw 350hz using
spectrogram.

I set ssbA to 1 and ssbC to 1.

I run direct line from pc soundcard to mic input on K2 (don't forget to put a
capasitor in line to prevent mic biasvoltage into the pc. between 2,2uF- 10uF
is good).
I run LF directly from speakerjack on the K2 into line in on PC with an xtra
plug to connect headphones so I can also hear what I see on waterfall.
Fineadjust with K2's AF GAIN.

Activate VOX on K2 and put ur fsk software into tx.
Adjust soundcard outout to the point where vox is trigging and holding K2 in tx.
Set fsk software into rx and check that the K2 is going in rx as well.

The line in has to be muted so K2 AF does not return to mic via PC.

This workes very well for me and the setup act as there was hardware keying.
For this the vox in the K2 works superb. I don't think it's clumsy at all.

Also with rit in 0,6 setting there would not be a problem with 10-30 hz offset
between rx/tx freq. in the K2.
Close enough anyway.

This is the easy way to digimode with the K2.

CU on digimode.

[Elecraft] VOX clicks with Yaesu MD-100 microphone

2004-08-30 Thread Stewart Baker
Here's a good one...

While testing the latest version of my Anti-VOX board I got reports saying that
my SSB signal was "clicky"on VOX. I thought the worst...

After much investigation it turned out to be nothing to do with my board, or
the
K2 for that matter.

Some "Engineer" decided when he designed the MD-100 microphone tone control
circuitry to route the PTT line clean through the center of it's analog
circuits.

The K2 uses the PTT line on VOX for TX/RX changeover. The effect I was getting
was the low to high transition at the end of the VOX delay period being coupled
into the microphone audio, causing a "click".

The solution was simple. I removed the PTT wires where they connect to the main
PCB in the microphone base, and reconnected them separately. End of problem.
It is possible that other microphones may be similarly afflicted.
If anyone wants more detail, please shout.

B.T.W Version 3 of the Anti-VOX is working well.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 frequency on power-up

2004-08-30 Thread Eric Ward
Found my own answer by searching the list archive. The freq displayed when
the "band" button was last tapped once is the one that comes on at
power-up-an undocumented "feature."

Nothing like looking before asking.

RE: [Elecraft] External Keying Auto-Detect problem

2004-08-30 Thread Rich Lentz
Ken:

It is kind of tricky to get it right. The actions you describe indicate
that you have the underline under the InP. The underline can not be under
the InP to get this extra feature.

Follow these steps:

Tap Menu

Then Select (that is, rotate the VFO as needed) - InP PdLn - (or it may
read PdLr or HAnd),

Depress (HOLD) MENU so that PdLn (or it may read PdLr or HAnd) is underlined
(or if you use reverse paddle that PdLr is underlined. Don't leave it in
Hand as this is pure Straight Key. If it reads HAnd rotate the VFO to PdLn
or PdLr.) The underline can not be under the InP

Now tap DISPLAY. You should briefly see " AdEt " and either OFF or On.

Tap DISPLAY again if you need to so that the last display you saw is AdEt
On. (It toggles each time you tap DISPLAY.)

Then exit the menu (tap Menu key).

I have found that sometimes I need to shut off "auto-detect" as I squeeze
the two paddles together at exactly the same time and thus get a long dah
rather than di dah di dah di dah.

KE0X

Rich,
Mine says Pdln DISPLAY
response is SEC
Port OFF

One problem I have noticed is no keying on insertion of the
Bencher paddle key line cable. I have to play around with it
before I get any keying. Is this related?

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 4138 passed Test & Alignment III

2004-08-30 Thread Thomas Martin
Hello,
just being glad to be within the Elecraft K2 community
again with my fourth K2 which passed the final test
yesterday.
Well the speaker needs to be fixed to the top cover and
there are some options (K160RX, KAF2, KNB2, KAT2, KSB2) to
be added but I don't expect any difficulties to occur.

Hope to meet some of you when I take the K2 to our
clubstation DK0SU. Our tower for the X7 beam will not be
available for some time because of repairment but the
vertical antenna and a dipole are still there so chances
are good we meet on the 40m band soon...and at least
during the next Elecraft QSO Party.
(...I got to improve my EQP result and reducing power from
the 15Watts of our TS-850S this year to 5Watts of the K2
next year will help by getting three points per QSO
instead of only two points.)

RE: [Elecraft] Weller Soldering Station

I'm getting ready to build a K2. Where is the best place to purchase the
Weller WTCPT soldering station?

Regards,
Darrell, WA5VGO

Darrell -

If you wait till September 1, then you are eligible for a $20 rebate for a
new WTCPT station purchase.

This is the Weller rebate information and flyer page
http://www.cooperhandtools.com/fallpromo/index.html

Fry's Electronics / Outpost.com is selling this station for $ 104.99. You
can purchase at their stores (Austin, TX closet to you)
or on-line at Outpost.com. They are currently advertising a "match any
competitors price" policy.

This will give you an initial price for local price shopping.
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/1723113

Action electronics (Santa, Ana, CA) is listing the station for $ 115.95
http://www.action-electronics.com/westations.htm#Wtcpt

I have used Wassco for Internet/phone orders in the past, but their prices
have risen over the past few months --
they do have excellent sales to watch for.

http://www.wassco.com/sinanddualso.html

Weller's Customer Service - South: (919) 362-7541
Should be able to provide you with names of Weller dealers / distributors in
the Houston area

Used stations do appear at hamfests or eBay -- which can be easily
repaired - if not working.
I sold my last WTCPT rebuild to a K2 builder last month, I am completing
rebuilds of the earlier model (circa 1976 - WTCP/WTCPL)

These are less expensive than new.

You may also wish to look at the Weller WES51 station. This station has
been selling for less than $ 100
Action Electronics offers 10% off on the tip and accessories when purchased
with the station (that's nice)

Outpost.com - $ 99

Re: [Elecraft] K2 w/ Winlink 2000?

2004-08-30 Thread Charles Greene

Steve,

I can comment on the use on WinLink for use by maritime motile stations,
which is a different use from what you are considering, ie, EMComm
use. Most of the WinLink operation heretofore has been by maritime mobile
stations.

I helped a new ham outfit a station this spring on his 44 ft sailboat for a
trip to the Caribbean. He was planning to use a IC706 for WinLink and for
his Marine SSB, but I advised him to keep the old SSB and switch his
antenna to the 706/tuner for ham use. The 706 or K2 will not cover all the
marine SSB frequencies anyway. The 706 has better DSP NR than the K2 which
may be important as many marine diesels are very noisy. I used my 706 car
mobile as a Maritime mobile this spring, and I keep 14300 in the ship's SSB
for an occasional check-in to the to the maritime mobile net, but I have
never used WinLink. However, I use other digital modes with my K2 and
K2/100 which works fine; there's no reason they would not work well on
WinLink. Probably better than most ham transceivers. You use r or r rev
on the K2 which was designed for digital use, and cut back power to about
30 watts on the K2/100 or 5 watts on the K2. I use a home brew
interface. You need a propriety modem for Pactor II for WinLink which
costs in the 400-700 dollar range, I don't have the exact price. I think
that also applies to WinLink 2000 which you are considering, but I might be
mistaken. If so, please correct this impression if I am wrong to set the
record straight. I need to read up on the ARRL proposal to use WinLink
2000. Some software designers have tried to incorporate Amtor into their
digital software but have timing problems with Windows in the ARQ
mode. Pactor II is proprietary so they cannot offer software using Pactor
II. If they could offer Pactor II as a Windows program they may have the
same timing problems in the ARQ mode.

If you just want e-mail from a ship, we have found a better plan is to buy
a satellite system. We now use a satellite system while at sea which
really works FB. The cost of the particular satellite system we use is 1/3
to 1/2 that of a WinLink system, and works much better. This particular
satellite system uses LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites of which there are
about two dozen to give coverage 90+ % of the time, and it operates at 9600
baud. It transmits on about 149 MHz and receives on about 132 MHz. It can
use the ship's VHF antenna on a time shared basis, but a dedicated VHF
antenna is advised. The satellite system also gives WX, will convert a
digital message to voice and forward to any voice telephone as a voice
message, will send a distress message, and has a few other bells and
whistles. It connects to the e-net and will do Yahoo, etc, and there are
ways to avoid Spam, 100%. There is a monthly fee which is very reasonable
for a trip or for a commercial vessel. It is useful any distance from
shore, worldwide. My advise for a ship sailing offshore is a SSB that
covers the international life boat frequency of 2182 KHz, normal marine
VHF, if you want e-mail, a LEO satellite system and a ham transceiver is
you want to chat on the maritime mobile nets. If anyone wants more details
on the satellite system, e-mail me off line.

I'm not really pushing any particular method of e-mail use for maritime
motile stations, and I realize it is off-topic, but satellite communication
heretofore has been out of sight price wise using stationery birds, but I
feel the price break-through and superior performance over HF using VHF and
the LEO satellites is worth mentioning to hams who are considering a
maritime mobile WinLink station. (I should put this in a letter to QST).

Has anyone used a K2 with Winlink 2000?

Winlink 2000 is being pushed by ARRL for EmComm use and I'd like to
experiment using it with my K2 especially with the SET coming up in
October. Here in the MDC section the SET is geared around proving Winlink
2000 as a usable method for passing traffic from the field.

If anyone is working Winlink, please share any comments or suggestions,
modems used, interface to K2, results, etc. Offlist may be more
appropriate. I know little other than what I've read doing some web
surfing and have not operated any digital mode on HF before.

For those who haven't read about it, Winlink 2000 basically is standard
email, but replaces the Internet connection with a radio link, primarily
HF. The emails can contain certain preapproved (by design) attachment
types like maps, lists, jpegs, etc. for EmComm use. You use a standard
POP3-compliant email client and some special amateur software, and of
course a radio. The K2 would seem to be perfect for portable operation in
a disaster situation.

Thanks ... Steve WA3SWS

[Elecraft] KX1 frequency on power-up

2004-08-30 Thread Eric Ward
What frequency does the KX1 go to on power-up? I can't figure out how
it picks it--not the last freq on which I TX, not one of the memories,
not the last one I tuned on. Maybe this is in the manual, but I didn't
see it.
