[Elecraft] Re: K2+1

2005-01-11 Thread Tom Althoff
For those who asked about cooling. There is no top cover on the KAT-100...the
bottom of the K2 is exposed (providing shielding between the KAT-100 and the
K2) and the position of the aux fan in the DB-9 location blows air across and
up through the ventilation holes in the bottom of the K2.

I just finished some tests. I chose 45W output as it is good for digital
modes and driving my KW amp to full output.

After 7 minutes key down into a dummy load (Duty cycle? We don't need no
stinking duty cycle!) the large heat sink is cold on the left side, warm on
the left half and right side and very warm directly over the KPA-100's output
transistors. The air bleeding from the front of the KAT-100 is cold. I
suspect the basic K2 output stage is benefiting as well.

Nothing like the fried egg feeling when I put my hand on the KPA-100 after
CQing for 4 mins without the 2nd cooling fan mounted in the KAT-100.

Ohif you don't have the 60M mod do NOT turn on the d1g menu
settingsomehow that got set during my consruction of the K2+1 and the
symptoms are a loss of PLL on 40M. The guys at Elecraft straightened me out on
that in one e-mail.

If anyone else builds their KAT-100 into their K2 I'd like to hear from them.

73 de Tom K2TA

I looked at your photos and I was wondering about cooling of the K2's
finals...There are ventilation holes in the bottom cover of the basic K2...My
recollection of the enclosure for the KAT100-1 is that there are no ventilation
holes in it...Do you run digital modes, and if so, have you experienced any
heat build up problems?...73

[Elecraft] Fw: K2 FOR SALE

2005-01-11 Thread Joseph Vilardo
I am selling my K2 (SERIAL NO. 03156) to reduce my radio inventory, too many
radios here.
The K2 was built in Jan 0f 2003 and has seen little use, not because of any
problems or dislikes, it is a great piece of equipment. My main radio is the
Yaesu FT1000MP, so there isn't a good reason to have two first class HF rigs in
the shack and I have decided to sell the K2. The rig and all add ons went
together as described and have worked flawlessly since construction. Here is
whats in the K2: K2 HF transceiver, KPA 100-100 watt amplifier, KSB2
SSB option, K160RX 160 meter option, KAT100-2 100 watt external tuner, KAF2
Audio Filter,
KIO2 RS232 Interface option, KBT2 Internal Battery Kit, MH2 Hand held Microphone

Included is the low power cover with speaker and battery, if you want to
operate the radio in the lower power configuration.

I have a little over $1600 in the radio with all the options and I am offering
it for sale at $1300 to any one in the CUS.Buyer pays shipping. If you are
sincerely interested in taking ownership of the excellent rig pleas e-mail me.

All the more exciting because I am doing an audio diary of my build for a
magazine I do recordings for which goes to the blind and partially sighted. If
you want an extra buzz, try doing a live recording of the most critical

switched on!
If any of you guys have got comments I could add I'd be pleased to include
them. Does anybody have experience of the Voice software? It would be useful
if I could let people know how effective it is.
By the way, my digital multimeter has a voice synthesizer, so you can

Right, time to start on the RF Board!

Re: [Elecraft] DMM Minimum Capacitance Measurements ?

2005-01-11 Thread L. D. Ingram

Jim,

I imagine different DMMs have different lower ranges, but what ever the
lower range is, you can measure even smaller capacitors by paralleling them
with one that does fall into the lower range of your particular DMM. First
measure the value of the capacitor that falls within your DMM's range then
connect the smaller one in parallel - the difference in the new value
measured is the capacitance of the smaller one. Of course with small values
you have to use the shortest possible test leads and make sure they stay
about the same distance apart for both measurements.

[Elecraft] K60XV Comment and Question

2005-01-11 Thread Dennis Ponsness
I built up and installed the K60XV module last night and it is another fine
addition to my K2! Worked a station at 5AM and had a nice QSO and he was
impressed by the audio quality of the rig - was using a Heil HC-4 headset.

I have one question, it appears that originally the XVTR output on the PC
board was going to be taken from a 4 pin header and the in/out would have
been connected via a pair of matching connectors. Since I decided to keep
my original heat sink and mount the XVTR in/out jacks on the top cover (I
like BNC's better than phono - but that is a personal preference) is there
some engineering reason that I cannot put a 4 pin header on the board and
attach the in/out jacks via a pair of 2 pin connectors? Main concern is if
I need to get under the hood it makes it a bit more difficult. If there
is a reason for NOT doing that, I may have to decide which is preferable -
live with the difficulty or get a new heat sink and live with the phono
connectors. Just curious.

RE: [Elecraft] DMM Minimum Capacitance Measurements ?

2005-01-11 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Jim, W1FMR asked:

(in picoFarads ?) DMM specs do not spell out what the minimum capacitance
is..

---

My Radio Shack DMM will accurately measure capacitance as low as 2 or 3 pf.

It has a parasitic capacitance of about 111 pf, but that's not a serious
problem when working with small capacitors. I simply subtract the parasitic
capacitance from the reading (113 pf - 111 = 2 pf). The meter has sockets
for capacitor leads to avoid variable parasitic capacitance from the test
leads. I've checked it for accuracy with values at low as 2.2 pf.

It will work with the test leads attached too as long as I'm careful to lay
the leads out so they don't move around. I've measured the value of caps I
can't plug into it easily (e.g. a large variable cap) by arranging the leads
so they are close to but not touching the cap and noting the parasitic
capacitance. Then I touch the leads to the cap and note the change.

I can't guarantee how other DMMs will react, but since a relatively small
number of special-purpose I.C.s are used in virtually all DMMs, I'd expect
other DMM's in its price class ($70) to behave much the same.

RE: [Elecraft] DMM Minimum Capacitance Measurements ?

2005-01-11 Thread Fraser Robertson
Jim, from memory typical DMM's do not have low capacitance ranges. I have a
LCR type portable DMM that has more useful ranges, but is not so good for
voltage and current measurements. It's lowest capacitance range is 200pF
full scale so it's possible to measure C's in the pF region. Over here such
meters cost about £80, a lot more than typical cheap DMM's. I found it very
handy for checking C's and L's when building the K2.

[Elecraft] I hate it

2005-01-11 Thread ab9v
I'm just so jealous of all those builders experiencing the joy of having
their Elecraft kits come to life while here I sit with nothing to do but
use and enjoy my K2 and KX1. Having built these guys last year, perhaps
it's time to relive the joy of building by selling these units and
starting over. I'll think about it. Perhaps I really need two of each of
them (and a K1?).

I started in ham radio in the very early 1960's and built everything in
the shack at that time. Ham radio has never been any more fun than
building your rigs from scrounged and discarded parts. Building
Elecraft kits is the closest thing to this joy as I've seen since.

Thanks, Wayne and Eric.

My Meterman 34XR has 4 scales - 4000, 400, 40 and 4 uF max scale,
resolution is 1 nF. Not terribly useful for things like building K2's -
which annoys me, because I bought it to build my K2, and intentionally
bought a meter that can measure capacitance. That's what I get for not
paying attention to the range that it could measure... :-( Oh well, it's
still a very nice meter.

I'll probably end up buying this: http://www.aade.com/lcmeter.htm when I
can afford it and want to spoil myself. The specs say it can measure
.010 pf to 1 uF (most units measure to 1.5 uF). Also inductance: .001
uHy (1 nHy) to 100 mHy (most units measure to 150 mHy).

here in hopes that NJQRP members will see it.

The (ir)regular monthly NJQRP meeting will be held this Saturday, Jan 15 at the
Food Court in the Forrestal Center in Princeton, NJ as usual. Folks usually
arrive
around 9:30 am.

We have not set a loose them for the meeting yet though as usual we encourage
all to bring their newly acquired goodies, current projects - both finished
and
in process and any excess parts for giveaway or sale for nominal prices.

We definitely will have info on the latest projects, the upcoming Atlanticon
event, the first public discussion of the exciting new changes in the Homebrewer
and breaking developments in the AmQRP leadership.

Please send this along to anyone you think may want to attend and will not see
this post.

Re: [Elecraft] 3 Days left to purchase a 2005 QRP Contest Calendar

2005-01-11 Thread paul hendershott
I just received my 2005 calander from Ron N3EPA today, and it is GREAT! Chock
full of Good Stuff!

I encourage everyone to pick one up for the new year. It sure will help bolster
the Elecraft to Elecraft contacts and awards and you'll meet a truly nice bunch
of folks! Only 4 days left, though - yikes!

[Elecraft] K1,KX1,K2

2005-01-11 Thread Jay Blass
I built the three radios in the order listed. KX-1 goes together quickly, but
is a little more challeging in a couple of tight spots than the K1. The K2 just
requires more time. As you well know, nothing is difficult, you just have to
put in the time.

No matter what, don't get in a hurry, just enjoy the process. The worst part is
when the doggone things are all aligned and on the air and you have to stow
your soldering station!

Best,

Jay
