It happened to me today too with one of my two radio clocks. the time went
back to it's original setting after correcting itself for Daylight Time

Craig, that is interesting because I had one of my radio clocks
switch back later in the day too. The other two stayed with DST.
I'm now waiting to see if the first clock switches back. I have a
feeling the DST bit got lost, either in the sending or the

Stand by. I think Wayne's away this weekend, but there is a solution in the
works.

All along a *few* KX1s have exhibited lower output, apparently due to normal
manufacturing variations in the transistors. Gary at Elecraft support has
helped owners make a few mods that corrected the problem on an individual
basis.

The KXB3080 seems to exacerbate this effect on some KX1s while others
happily pump out full power. This problem didn't really become obvious until
after the Field Test was completed. Several days ago Wayne went into
Warp-Drive to evaluate the issue and validate a solution for those who
experience it. As of Friday I understand the fix was tested and ready to
implement for those who need it so all KX1s will put out somewhere between 3
and 4 watts with a 14 VDC supply and 1 to 1.5 watts on the internal battery,
including those equipped with the KXB3080.

Look for more announcements to show up in the next couple of days. The
bottom line is that your KX1 will meet the full specifications with or
without the KXB30 or KXB3080 modules installed.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for April 2nd and 3rd, 2006

2006-04-02 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
My ears have started to lose that ringing sound. 40 meters was very
QRN ridden. I think I lost a few folks to it. At this location the noise
was often above S4. Bruce, N0BK, mentioned he thought the storms were
right between us. I think so too but K5WA was losing a few characters
from me as I was from him due to the static. All I know is someone was
getting a very large storm. Or maybe a large number of somebodies were
getting a number of storms. Makes for tough copy.
But, twenty meters was much nicer. The normally strong signal from
Ray was very hard to copy today. I think he said SC but that would be a
new state for him to use as a KX1 site. Never can tell since he did check
in from the Caribbean once :) Dick had the strongest signal on twenty. I
think the storm had the largest signal on forty though.
We had a number of new folks stop by. WB3AAL is well know to many in
the QRP field. His 5 watt signal from a K1 was very easy to copy here in
Oregon. He wrote me an email stating he was using a Butternut vertical.
It worked well. W1TF was up and down on twenty. At first I could just
catch a letter here and there. Then he popped up to S7 for the longest
time and again back to S2.

twenty there were a number of pileups where all I could hear was a howl.
Then a few letters would pop out. I am getting incrementally better at

Tom was off handing out counties in Missouri. Too bad I was busy with
chores and not able to get on the air. It would have been nice to work

point nearby and hand out four counties at once. I don't think any of
them are rare but it might just be fun to get out in the woods and work on

[Elecraft] Re: High Altitude Solder

2006-04-02 Thread Allen C. Ward
It is not necessary to use high altitude solder for altitudes
under 25,000 meters. One can merely use etheral flux with
standard 60/40 rosin core. Above 25,000 meter the solar
flux dilutes the etheral flux and so high altitude solder IS
required.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 dial calibration

2006-04-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

That sounds like inverted sidebands to me. Try presetting the CAL FIL BFO
values to those indicated in the manual to get things in the ballpark and
then go through the procedure again. The procedure does work FB, I use it 2
or 3 times a week on K2s that are in here for repair/alignment/calibration.

If you want additional information, look at the K2 dial calibration article

RE: [Elecraft] K2 question

2006-04-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ed,

There is no direct relationship, but the audio path does go through the
KDSP2 card, so there may be an unsoldered connection on that card which had
adequate contact to work at first, but has now wiggled loose.

You may want to remove the KDSP2 and put jumpers in to complete the audio
path - 2 bent component leads will do, stick the leads in the headers -
control board J1 pin 1 to J2 pin 1 and J1 pin 2 to J2 pin 2. If you have
audio, blame the KDSP2 card, but if it is still silent, look elsewhere.

Look at the connection for the speaker that is on the RF board next to

[Elecraft] RF Board K2 #5422 - Paneling?

2006-04-02 Thread Fred (FL)

Well I got thru K2 #5422 - Control Board, and
Front Panel pcb. I've started the RF Board and
have finished installing items up to page 38 in
manual. WW Couple items are tacking
off course?

1. K2 Manual Page 38 talks about installing "two (2)
2-D Fasteners Blocks" on each of the side panels,
in newly masking-tape-removed areas.

Then page 39 instructs to install these two (2)
side panels in place, "to the two (2) 2-D Fasteners"
that are already installed on the outside edges of
the RF Board? Why did page 38 instruct to install
2-D Fasteners, which were already installed from
way back when in RF Board section?

2. K2 Manual Page 39 then goes on to instruct
"installation of two (2) Oval Feet and Tilt Bail" onto
bottom cover. BUT -- Tilt Bail is about 1/2" too
long,
when one screws in-place the Oval Feet at the 2
bottom cover locations. I'm sure they don't want
me to attempt to bend the 3/16" metal Tilt Bail
inward by 1/2"? Its a good 3/8 or 1/2" too long?

Have I gotten new version metal covers and old
version bails and 2-D fasteners? Or possibly is
the Tilt Bail I got - actually for another Elecraft
radio, like a K1?

It seems odd to be installing, on page 38 and 39
side panels, bottome panels, and tilt bails at this
early construction stage of the RF BOARD?

HELP
the boards, soldering, and resistance checks
seems to be tracking right nice! (PS PS PS - Digital
VM/MM works MUCH better!!! :)

2) Rewire Bedroom.

3) Check solder connections.

Congratulations!

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ Red Hot Vertical Progress

2006-04-02 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all!

Well I wound the 30m loading coil today and the antenna works great on
30m. SWRs are around 1.2:1 across the band. I now have a 7oz. vertical
that works on 20m,30m and 40m! The antenna is designed to hang from a
tree etc. The vertical radiator is around 16 feet and has a male BNC
connector on the bottom end. This plugs into a bnc barrel on 20m and
small lightweight loading coils on 30m and 40m. The heaviest loading
coil is 40m and it only weighs-in at 1oz! The entire antenna less 25' of
coax weighs-in at 7oz or so. I'm now working on a small tune unit for
15m etc. This will also be installed in a film canister. I plan to use
this small light weight vertical on the trail!

Oh yes, I worked W8VFR from TN from my back yard here in PA using a K1 -
no problem! Now on to designing a tune unit for the higher bands.

When I finished with this antenna, I'll post an email with all the
details etc.

First make sure trimmer pot R4 is fully CLOCKwise now.

Check the two inductors wound on yellow cores: L1 and L2. L1 should have 13
turns and L2 14 turns. It's easy to get them reversed!

Finally, while transmitting into a dummy load adjust the position of the
turns on L1 and L2 for best balance between 20 and 14 meter output. They
should be within 1/2 watt of each other, and can usually be closer. That
will often improve the overall output.

I am not aware of any adjustment for the output monitor in the KX1. The
KXAT1 ATU, which displays the power out in watts, is adjustable.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 transmit too high

2006-04-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Kieth,

OK, you seem to have VRFDET in proper order on your K2, so next step is to
check the circuits that are driven by the uP to control the power level.

To briefly explain how the power control works in the K2 - the power
requested is known to the uP, and the actual output power is indicated to
the uP through the VRFDET signal. The uP compares these two and adjusts
VPWR up or down as required - then that signal flows through the keying
waveshape (and ALC) circuits and exits there as VALC - that resulting
voltage is applied to RF Board Q24 through R98 and Q24 in turn controls the
amount of RF voltage from the BFO is to be sent on to the Transmit Mixer.

I would start with VPWR at Control Board U8 pin 2 - I can't predict exactly
what the voltage here should be, but it should be smaller if the uP is
attempting to reduce the power output - I would expect something in the
vicinity of 0 to 1 volts (note that 5 volts will be present if the menu is
set for CAL FCTR). If that is correct, next check VALC at the emitter of
Control Board Q8 - again I would expect something finite, but rather low
here if the output power is greater than that requested (the values in the
DC voltage chart are for the condition of CAL FCTR set in the menu). If you
find VALC is a high voltage, the ploblem lies in the ALC circuit - look at
the schematic for the Control Board and see the ALC section at the upper
left - identify all the associated components and check them for proper
value and placement - especially check the placement of C45 and C46 which
are soldered on the bottom of the Control Board.

If you don't find the problem here, let us know and we will look elsewhere
(in the transmit chain rather than the controls - you should be prepared to
measure RF Voltages).

73,
Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] Question regarding paddle wiring

2006-04-02 Thread David A. Belsley
Tom: These sorts of questions are really simply answered with
straightforward experiments. Take a 1/8" stereo plug (or cable wired
to such a plug), use your ohm meter to determine which connector
(wire) goes to the tip, then (after placing the K2 in TEST mode)
short that connector (wire) to ground to hear whether you get dots or
dashes. Recall, however, that even if you wire things backward, you
can reverse them through a menu selection.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-04-02 Thread Stephen W. Kercel

Geoff:

Yes, it does seem that cattle raising entails some bizarre problems.
Back when I worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority we held
hearings on a proposed 500 KV transmission line, one end of which was
to terminate at the Phipps Bend Nuclear Plant. One person objecting
to the proposed installation was a dairy farmer through whose farm
the line would pass. He was not worried about the proximity to stray
voltage or the very large electric field associated with such
lines. Despite the fact that he was over a hundred miles from the
plant, his concern was that his cows would be exposed to all that
radioactive electricity.

If the April 28, 2005, Indiana state legislation stands up, on April 2, 2006,
Indiana will no longer be counted as one of three states which do not Spring
ahead from "standard" to "daylight saving" time or Fall back from daylight to

[Elecraft] Want to work some (fairly) rare Missouri Counties?

2006-04-02 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi Folks:

This weekend is the Missouri QSO Party!!! The second day starts at
1800Z today and runs until Z this evening (6 hours).

W0ESE (another K2 owner) and I will be operating N0SS/M, driving
through a number of semi-rare Missouri counties as we travel. Here's
a list of the counties we'll hit today:

  MOQP 2006 - N0SS/M DAY 2 ROUTE
  (9 COUNTIES, 223 miles, in 5h 30m)

   COL - COLE (starting county)
   OSA - OSAGE
   GAS - GASCONADE
   MGM - MONTGOMERY
   WAR - WARREN
   CAL - CALLAWAY
   AUD - AUDRAIN
   BOO - BOONE
   RAN - RANDOLPH
   CAL - CALLAWAY
COL - COLE (back home again)

You can work us from each county!

We'll operate CQ ONLY with my K2/100. Operating frequencies will generally
be xx.042 MHz +/- 1kHz for QRM. I'll be concentrating on 20M (early
afternoon) and 40M (later in the day, swapping back/forth between 40M
and 20M as activity dictates).

I'll be calling "CQ MOQP DE N0SS/M/xxx" where "xxx" is the
three-letter abbreviation for the current county (see above list).

Please work us if you can catch us... band conditions have been
pretty poor and FINDING contacts has been somewhat brutal... only 116
Q's as a result of yesterday's 4:30 effort.

If you call us and we continue to call CQ, it's because we can't hear
you!!! Sometimes power line noise gets pretty heavy (even with the
great noise blanker and DSP noise reduction enabled). If we don't
reply within a few calls, wait a while and try again. If you can and
we work someone else, don't assume we didn't hear you... the other
guy might have either been stronger of get his call in quicker...
NEVER GIVE UP!!!

I hope we'll work a bunch of Elecrafters this afternoon.

73,

Tom N0SS

You CAN buy laptops/notebook with serial ports. I have bought at least 4 of
them in the last year. I just tooked delivery on a HP NW8000 last week with
one serial point. Dell also offers notebooks with serial.

They've not had serial ports for several years and USB is usually the only
expansion route.

[Elecraft] K2mute...

2006-04-02 Thread Bob
I'm working on Alignment and Test Part II. All resistance checks have
been normal, frequency checks are normal, side tone works great. Just no
sound otherwise. I wired up the speaker just to see if it was my
headphones. Still nothing. Voltage checks are within specs except for
the following:

Control board U6 pins10,15, & 24 have 0vdc instead of 5; pin 25 has 5vdc
instead of 0

Control Board U9 pin 1 has 0vdc instead of .4
Rf Board U1 pins 9, 10 have 0vdc
RF Board U4 pin 5 has 0vdc and pin 7 has 5vdc
RF Board U5 pin 1 has 5vdc and pin 2 has 0vdc

I was getting cross eyed checking and rechecking so I've set it aside
for now. I did manage to find a mistake on the front panel that caused
the ELE message to appear on Alignment and Test Part I, but I'm stumped
so far on this problem.

Thanks,
Bob WB0BS

[Elecraft] FS: Ten Tec Centaur Amplifier

2006-04-02 Thread Jim Sheldon
I have available for sale one TenTec Centaur HF amplifier. It uses 3 811A
tubes in grounded grid, and has a built-in QSK/sequencer board. QSK was
factory stock with this amp. This particular model is no longer being made
by TenTec, but most parts are supposedly still available should they ever be
required.

This one is in very good condition both cosmetically and electrically.
There are minor wear marks on the cabinet, as would be expected. According
to the manual, it is supposed to put out 650 watts CW and 800 or so on SSB.
It does RTTY nicely at 400W as well. This is the TenTec recommended power
setting for RTTY. Power output is within TenTec specifications according to
my Bird 43 with borrowed 500 and 1000 watt slugs into a Microwave Associates
50 ohm dummy load. The original 3 tubes are still good, and I'll include a
brand new matched set of 3 Ryazan (Svetlana) 811A's as spares.

The way the QSK/Sequencer works is thus: You plug your key/keyer (solid
state output + keying very low current draw) into the key-in. The key-out
goes to the Key jack of your rig. You will have to use an external keyer
here, as it is only key to ground, not 3 wire paddles. The PTT for SSB
works the same way - so ANY transceiver's solid state amp keying circuit
will work as long as it provides + going to ground type keying. Very little
current is involved so it shouldn't be a problem. MY IC706MKIIG works very
well with no buffer board whatsoever. My K2 is QRP only, so it doesn't have
enough drive to run it. The sequencer board insures that when you press the
key, first the amp switches the antenna, then removes cutoff bias from the
tubes and finally provides keying to the transceiver. Switching is
accomplished in approximately 7 milliseconds, so it is certainly fast enough
for QSK to at least 30 WPM possibly even faster depending on the QSK circuit
in your rig. The amp is wired for 220 VAC operation, and has a 15 amp 220V
plug attached to the cord. It will plug into a standard 15 or 20A, 220V
window mount air conditioner outlet. It can easily be changed for 120VAC
operation, but it runs much more efficiently on 220. Also, due to voltage
drop at the higher current required for 120V, the HV in the amp will be
lower, and it won't put out full rated power.

I bought this amp to help me finish my QRO DXCC and have finally
accomplished this so am going back to 99 percent QRP operation. I've also
done QRP DXCC, WAC and 160 meter WAS so I'm pretty much done chasing any
paper that would even halfway require more than 100 watts.

I've heard it said that, "Two of the happiest days in a ham's career are
when he buys his first amplifier and when he sells it." This one is for
sale for $575 plus actual packing and shipping via either UPS or FEDEX. It
is HEAVY, so be prepared to either pick it up in Wichita, KS, or pay the
shipping hi ... The Tubes are horizontally mounted, and are very securely
mounted. It was shipped to me with the tubes in place, and they survived.
I can either leave them in, or remove them - your choice.

Jim Sheldon - W0EB
Wichita, KS

Serious inquiries only and please off the reflector.

You just have to look before you buy, and not assume you can't get what you
want. I'm typing this on a Dell D610 which is a current model and does indeed
have a serial port, as do many other models.
