RE: [Elecraft] K2 DSP vs. Audio Filter

2006-06-02 Thread Robert Allbright

I agree with Ron AC7AC

The K2 just by itself for cw is excellent

I also have the KDSP2 but don't use it much

73 Robert G3RCE (K2 #5219)

---
You might gain some experience with the K2 for a while and decide
what there

is about the rig without either module that you'd like to fix.

The DSP has awesome capabilities but, like you, I don't like the
sound of

digitized audio.

The KAF2 was something I had planned on when I built my K2 in 2000, then
when I listened to a couple of them I sort of never got around to
ordering

my own - and haven't missed it.

For my ears, the K2's I.F. filters do the whole job just fine.

That's the inherent advantage of the K2. We have a lot of options to
tailor

it to our personal interests and needs. I'm 99.9% CW yet I added the SSB
option for the flexibility to work SSB and digital modes whenever I
wanted

to do so and I've never regretted doing so. If I had been trying to
logically deduce what I'd want before using the K2 as a CW op,
probably I'd

have skipped the SSB module and gone for one of the filters instead.

[Elecraft] F12 Sigma Vertical

2006-06-02 Thread CTMorton
I have two of the Sigma 5s here in CX land. They are extremely easy to
put together...just a few bolts and wing nuts and I use a cement
umbrella base with a sleeve of pvc about 2ft long and just slide the
base of the vertical into the pvc. No radials as these are vertical
dipoles; 50ft of control wire come with the antenna as it uses factory
tuned coils to change freq. Both Sigma 5s were below 20m cw when I got
them so it was a simple task of sliding off the PVC cover and spreading
the coils on each end. The other coils were set at the factory and no
adjustment required.
My 20m 2:1 points are 14000 and 14270; all other bands are below 2 to 1;
havent checked above 28.600 so dont know about that.
So, how does it play? CX is a long way from major ham
populations, US and EU. The antenna exhibits low angle radiation, as it
should and I believe F12's claim of 90% efficiency as being pretty
accurate. Granted, I have nice call sign that attracts the dx but I also
work almost everything I hear. VQ9JC 4S7NE on 17m cw are recent examples.
Another vertical that I used when I first got here was the DK9SQ
fiberglass 33ft pole and his single element loop. It also worked very
well on 40-10m but is more of a weekend antenna. My pole finally snapped
in about 40-50kt gusting winds last January; this was after continually
flexing for about 4 months as I had it permanently mounted via bungee
cords to the patio support post.
Finally, I recommend going to www.contesting.com and see the reviews of
all the vertical antennas posted on eham by our colleagues..

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft DSP vs Audio Filter?

2006-06-02 Thread Lyle Johnson

Another consideration is the current drawn by the DSP unit, if you
intend to operate your K2 from the internal battery option a fully
loaded K2 (including DSP) can approach 350 mA.

If the current band conditions don't require the use of the DSP, it can
be placed in bypass mode where its current consumption drops to about 10 mA.

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft DSP vs Audio Filter?

2006-06-02 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'll chime in with my 2 cents...

I operate 99.9% CW. I bought the KAF2 before the KDSP2 was released. I
originally wanted the KAF2 for both the clock feature and the audio filter
feature (I had money then, and wanted as many features as I could get in my
K2/QRP). Now I seldom use either the clock or audio filter. If I use the audio
filter, I'll use it at the wider setting (AF1?) - the narrow setting I might
use for really rough conditions with wall-to-wall signals - but it generally
doesn't see much use. The clock - well ... let's just say that since I bought
my Casio G-Shock/Waveceptor/Tough Solar watch ... I get very accurate GMT/UTC
from my wrist now.

Would I buy the KAF2 now? Probably not - since the IF filtering does 99% of the
work. BUT - first filter setting does a very nice job of rolling off the 'hiss'
that you'll hear in a pair of stereo headphones ... so it does make it much
more comfortable for those that must operate for a long period of time. For
this reason - I'll be keeping the KAF2.

If I was interested primarily in SSB - I think I'd probably get the DSP for the
simple reason that it will handle noise reduction and filter out heterodynes
that always seem to be a factor in SSB reception.

RE: [Elecraft] update older k2

2006-06-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Rich,

I suggest you download the K2ATOB instructions and look at the list of
changes shown there - there are several 'optional' parts that IMHO should be
included as part of the task. In addition to the A to B changes, add the
PLL Temperature Stability mod and the Keying Waveshape mod - and while you
are at it, add the 2 diodes for the Strong Signal Handling addition (there
is no parts kit for this, just order 2 1N4148 diodes) - the mounting details
for the diodes is on page 59 of the K2 Rev F manual.

In addition, change the IF filter crystals on both the RF Board and the SSB
option and rewind T7 to the turns ratio indicated in the Rev F manual.
Check the resistors on the SSB option ALC area to see if the latest resistor
changes have been made. While you have the SSB option crystals removed,
change the SSB filter capacitors to the newer values if you desire the wider
OP1 filter.

Last but not least, look it over carefully for any 'special purpose' mods
that the previous owner may have added and either remove them or satisfy
yourself that they are useful for your purposes.

Having done all that, you should have a K2 that performs up to the level of
the current shipped kits. You may also want to optimize the AGC Threshold
for best reception (on the pre-SN3000 K2s this involves changing the fixed
resistor Control Board R1 (lower its value).

[Elecraft] K1 tx alignment: cannot hear sidetone or monitor tone

2006-06-02 Thread Andrew Moore
I am performing a K1 transmitter offset alignment as described on page 47 of
the manual (Rev C, October 9 2000). According to the manual I should
install a jumper between the two OFS pads, disable AGC, set output to 1
watt, and enter Tune mode. At that point I should hear two tones - a
sidetone, plus a transmit monitor tone.

I hear neither. If I key the paddles, I hear the side tone. But Tune mode
doesn't produce any sidetone, nor can I hear the transmit monitor tone.

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K1 tx alignment: cannot hear sidetone or monitor tone

2006-06-02 Thread JT Croteau

This may help.

K1 Builder Alert #3: Inability to hear transmit signal when making the TX Offset
Adjustment
26 Feb. 2001

Impact: All K1's

Background:
When making the 'Transmit Offset Adjustment' (K1 Rev D manual, page 47) on some
K1s no TX signal tone is heard. (This adjustment has you match the K1 sidetone
frequency with the TX offset.) The reason this happens is because on some rigs
we have two mute circuits that work almost too well. Q10 is a shunt mute FET,
and Q11 is a series mute FET. Jumpering OFS (as noted on page 47) prevents Q10
from muting, but it does not prevent Q11 from muting. Some J309s mute so well
there is not enough AF signal leakage from U3 to U4 to be heard in the speaker.
TX offset can still be set using an external receiver as a reference, but the
following procedure is suggested if you want to use just the K1.

Modification to TX Offset Adjustment instructions. (Please read the TX Offset
instructions on page 47 first.):

1. Set the RX BFO properly first (K1 Rev. D manual page 40), by adjusting C20
until maximum amplitude is found using an AC voltmeter on the AF output, or
using Spectrogram to peak the AF signal on noise.

2. Then turn off the sidetone completely (StL 0).

3. Set the power level for 2-3 watts.

4. Jumper OFS.

5. Try adjusting TX BFO trimmer C13 to see if you can hear the beat note. If you
still cannot hear the TX-generated tone, temporarily place a resistor of 47k to
100k across the Drain and Source leads of Q11 to allow more audio to leak into
the AF amp at U4. Now you should be able to hear the TX tone well.

6. You can then increase StL to 1-5 or so to match the sidetone and TX signal
levels. You may need to adjust the StL and Power level slightly so both are at
about the same audio level for hearing the beat note.

7. When the TX offset adjustment is complete, remove the OFS jumper and the 47k
to 100k resistor from Q11.

Hi, Ron.

See you on 10 when it opens!

It's open most days at the moment afternoon. For the past week I've
scanned the beacon
segment around 12pm and I am consistently hearing beacons across the
continental US
from a receiver in London Ontario Canada. Some slow QSB but these
beacons are mostly
operating CW at QRP levels so QSOs should be possible.

Right now as I write this (2nd June 1615UTC UTC) I'm listening to
N4HLF/B and W3HH/B in Florida and KG4VVV/B in South Carolina, from
London Ontario. The antenna is a 3.5m HF
whip at 11m AGL feeding back to an Icom PCR-1000 via ~30m of buried
Belden9913, so
nothing spectacular :)

I'm listening to 28.272MHz in CW mode with the IF set to 6kHz.

There are a couple of weaker signals too that could be resolved with
some judicious
filtering, see the spectrum at:

http://www.sunim.plus.com/28272khz.gif

Audio file is here:

I'm looking forward to getting my 10m highmite on the air!!!

2006-06-02 Thread Mimi and Steve
Keith,
I have been using the Force 12, Sigma 5 for 10 - 20m including WARC with
success. The Reno QRP Group used it for the 7th QSO Party. We logged QRP
contacts from CA to ME.
The antenna is a vertical dipole with a matching network at the feed point.
It is only 9' tall and a base aluminum tube is added fro ground mounting.
By mounting it higher above ground, local coverage is increased.

[Elecraft] K2 #3829 has grown up! :-)

2006-06-02 Thread Tom Arntzen
Hi all!
Long time since I was on list.
My K2 has grown since last time.
It is now a K2/100 DSP AT.
The DSP and KAT100 is lates addition to the line.
My K2 has worked flawless since it was build and gives me daily pleasure.
Earlier I read some complaints about the KDSP beeing difficult to set.
I find the KDSP to be surprising simple when I saw how many adjustments there
really are.
The gainmenu are my favorite.
Beeing able to balance the system was a big advantage. ( still balancing my
system hehe.)
The thing is that the KDSP is adaptive and the use is adaptive and has to be
done over time.
At first when you start use the dsp you only has enough feel to set the dsp
just broadly where you want it.
The rest has to come with timeeg. fine tuning.
When it comes to the KAT100.Well!!
I bought a used Z100 for use with my FT-817..( still has my K1 witch I want
sell)
That was a good opportunity to bye the T-1 since the Z100 want work with the
817???
Low power specs is the same. z100 says 0,1 and T-1 says 0,5 I think.
The Z100 lies. T-1 doesn't. One of the fines small piece of equipment I have
ever owned.
I lost my believe in the Z100 so the KAT100 was bought for my K2. Smart move!
I more and more get the feeling that Elecraft want people to like their new
investment more or just as much as making money
while others just want to make money.
It also make me feel that when I use my elecraft rigs and addons , I use well
tested designs witch was build by the most trusted person on earth.
Me. :-)
Have a nice weekend all!

[Elecraft] For Sale: Complete K2/100 package

2006-06-02 Thread Chris LaClair

Dear Elecraft List-

FOR SALE-
COMPLETE Elecraft K2/100 package, which consists of:

Elecraft K2/100 serial no. 4841, built, with these options installed:
- KPA100 100W amp (makes it a K2/100 instead of a regular K2). The KPA100
also includes the computer (serial) interface.

- KDSP2 DSP module
- KSB2 SSB module
- K160RX 160M and RX antenna module
- Finger Dimple!

The radio and options were carefully built in May 2005 using Kester 44
solder and a temp controlled iron, at a grounded soldering station in a
non-smoking environment. This is my second K2 and my third Elecraft (I've
also built a K1 and several mini-modules). The radio and options are in
mint condition and work perfectly. The radio was aligned using a frequency
counter and Spectrogram. The radio works beautifully and puts out 100W+ on
all bands. I believe this is one of the finest K2s on the planet!

Well I said it was a package -- also includes the following:

- KAT100-1 Slim 100W automatic antenna tuner, NOT BUILT. New in box. This
is an easy weekend build.
- Schurr Profi II paddle in mint condition, in original box, with a
gold-plated plug installed for the K2. This paddle was $300 new for Morse
Express in May 2005.
- Samlex SEC-1223 23A switching power supply (generates no RF noise on the
K2). Mint condition with power cord and Anderson PowerPole adapter for
K2/100, as well and the standard power cord for the K2.

- All manuals for radio and options
- Serial interface cable for K2 computer control

As you can see, this is a complete first-class station that includes
everything except for the coax and antenna! I would like to sell all items
together as a package, please do not ask to split anything off. Total cost
for all these items unbuilt in 2005 was $1968.45 I will sell all for
$1,750 and include UPS Ground insured shipping to the Continental USA at no
extra charge.

Although it dosnt provide enhanced memory functions.

How does the N4py software compare as far as ease of use?

I wouldnt have to write this querry if N4PY provided a way to test run his
software before the purchase.Something that he should seriously
consider providing.

If there is someone who uses both software programs, how does the N4PY
software compare to the K24u as far as ease of use? Does the N4py
use multiple screens that need to be loaded separately --- and therefore
increase the complexity of getting from point A to B? Or is it as easy to
use as the K24u software --- where you can see and change all the primary
 opr conditions on one screen?

G'day,

| Right now as I write this (2nd June 1615UTC UTC) I'm listening to
| N4HLF/B and W3HH/B in Florida and KG4VVV/B in South Carolina, from
| London Ontario. The antenna is a 3.5m HF
| whip at 11m AGL feeding back to an Icom PCR-1000 via ~30m of buried
| Belden9913, so
| nothing spectacular :)
|
| I'm listening to 28.272MHz in CW mode with the IF set to 6kHz.

Will swing the beam your way and fire up the K2 in beacon mode. Give you
a signal out of your back yard to look for! I don't do much local stuff
less than about 6000km. Even that doesn't get me over the water to Cape
Town.

| I'm looking forward to getting my 10m highmite on the air!!!

What is this?

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

[Elecraft] Elecraft and satellite communications

2006-06-02 Thread John Wiener

Hi!

Just read the chapter on Satellite Communications in the new ARRL
Handbook. Anyone care to share experience with Elecraft gear and
satellites? Or, is there a web page for Satellite Communications
with K2 and transverters, etc.?

Thanks!

John

[Elecraft] Re: AV620

2006-06-02 Thread Jim Scott

I've had one for a couple of years. Right now, ever since Katrina, its been
my only HF antenna. Mine is mounted on an old push up pole about 18 ft.
above ground.

I'm well satisfied with it.

If I ever have some more trees grow high enough to put up some wires, I'll
probably do that.

Until that time, I'll be on the AV620.
(It survived Katrina a lot better than my trees)
