[Elecraft] Raspy audio from K2

2006-12-13 Thread John R. Lonigro
I recently finished building the KSB2 and did the alignment on the
filters. Everything seems to be working as advertised, except on
transmit my voice sounds raspy. I haven't had time to dig into the
problem yet, but I did try 3 separate mics and got the same result. For
my test, I transmitted at 1 Watt into a dummy load while listening on my
Icom 706 with headphones. My first assumption is that I simply need to
tweak the transmit filter, but I'm asking if anyone else has had the
same symptom that was perhaps caused by something else. For example, is
it possible the two radios are simply too close to each other for a good
audio test? They are on separate supplies and were about 6 feet apart
during the test.

Thanks and 73's,

[Elecraft] KDSP2 questions

2006-12-13 Thread Chuck Guenther
I'm enjoying the KDSP2 module in my K2. It is the most effective audio DSP I
have used. I have some questions, though.

1.) The filter C1, or c1 comes up on the menu as a lowpass filter and seems
to be fixed. Can it be changed to a bandpass ? If so, how ? The manual is
not clear on this. What is the cutoff frequency of this lowpass filter? Is
this cutoff frequency adjustable?

2.) Referring to the KDSP2 Manual, page 38, troubleshooting: The middle of the
page gives the following symptom (which I experience frequently): AFIL works
but I can't access DSP or clock menus when I press Display The manual goes on
to suggest turning the K2 off then back on. This works for me, but is there a
better fix for this? The manual also says to let us know if this happens
frequently. I have e-mailed Elecraft support regarding this.

Hi John, one possibility is that the transformer of the power supply is
too close to the K2, try some additional physical separation and see if
that does the trick.

[Elecraft] Solvent

2006-12-13 Thread William M. Spaulding, SR
Hi Folks,

I'd like to know from the collective wisdom what solvent may be used on
Elecraft PC assemblies to remove some residual flux and flux smears.

It seems to me that a solvent that wouldn't harm boards and components was
isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in the old days.

What do you Elecraft Builders use!

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Solvent

2006-12-13 Thread Jack Smith

Bill:

I use denatured alcohol and a commercial spray-on flux remover. Both
seem to work about equally well for me. Denatured alcohol can be found
at any hardware store, of course, and is cheaper than the flux remover.

I apply alcohol with a small brush. In some cases, a cotton swab is
useful, but you tend to get cotton fibers snagged on component leads, so
if you can find them foam swabs are better.

The problem with isopropyl alcohol that you purchase at the drug store
is that some contain extra ingredients that can leave a residue on your
PCB. The electronics supply house I frequent sells electronic grade
isopropyl for board cleaning.

I have not found any problems with damage to plastic components, but
obviously a test should be made if you have any doubt. And, of course,
keep it away from the LCD and diffuser. (don't ask me how I know about
that.)

Re: [Elecraft] Solvent

2006-12-13 Thread Ken Kopp

There are/were many flux removal chemicals available,
but in today's over-protective society they're hard to
find. I treasure my stock of triclorethelyne (SP?). (:-))

Rubbing alcohol and a small stiff brush work well.
I place a paper towel on the board, between the brush
and the board, to soak up the freed resin and prevent
it from running all over the board.

An ideal brush is known as an acid brush and is available
at welding supply stores. It has a rolled sheet metal handle
and stiff bristles that can be cut to shorter lengths to make
the brush stiffer. A fist-full of 'em is cheap. In other stores
they may be sold as glue brushes.

RE: [Elecraft] Solvent

2006-12-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I'm sure others will suggest many options although if you read the Elecraft
manuals you'll find, in bold type:

DO NOT use ... solvents of any kind. Use of any of these will void your
warranty.

If you need to clean your boards you're probably using too much solder. Try
a smaller diameter solder.

If you look at the photos of assembled boards in any of several Elecraft
assembly manuals including the XV 50, 144, 222 or 432 transverters, the KX1,
the T1 antenna tuner or the WM1, AT1 or AF1 mini-modules, you'll see boards
I built up while writing the assembly procedures for those kits. Those
photos are the boards as they came from the soldering iron.

If you look closely, you might see a few dark spots of flux here and there,
but they're tiny and insignificant and often in a place where I installed
and removed a part several times as the design was finalized. To be certain
the kit can be built exactly as described, I never use any tools that are
not specifically listed in the manual. That means no fancy high-powered
vacuum desoldering tool to clean up pads; just braid or the SoldapulltR
sucker listed under Tools Required.

I will admit to taking a small swab with some isopropyl alcohol to an
individual, particularly messy solder pad when I needed to re-shoot a
picture after many component changes, especially when, after many
resoldering, some flux escaped the pad itself and ran onto the PCB, but
that's the extent of any flux removal. I moisten a Q-tipR or similar swab
with alcohol, then place it on the flux and spin the tip to scrub that spot
and loosen the flux.

I wouldn't clean the boards.

I didn't on mine.

If you do, with alcohol, be sure not to use Completely Denatured Alcohol. It
is a serious poison and can be absorbed via your skin. It contains brucine,
very nasty stuff.

Be careful. I'm sure your boards will be fine if you use good solder and
solder carefully.

After you clean your boards and void your warranty, take that 91% alcohol,
put about a half-inch in the bottom of a one-gallon glass apple cider jug,
swirl it around, and drop in a match. It'll entertain the kids for hours.

To do it again you may have to blow into the jug to add some oxygen. Don't
breath too much of the fumes, but at the same time the light-headedness
makes the effect even more fun to watch.

The effect ranges from a sharp whoosh of fire out the top to a beautiful,
slow, bubbling wall of fire from the top to the bottom of the jug that makes
a low wah sound -- hence the name wah bottle that we attach to this fun

I'll answer any other wah bottle questions offline.

[Elecraft] For what it may be worth

Sometimes we tend to forget things... I forgot that not everyone had
access to a broadband Internet connection... as a result, I continued

main page, creating a monster which must have had some folks pulling
out all remaining hairs from their heads just waiting for everything
to download.

I've now tried to correct some of that... I've re-worked the main
page, broken it into 5-6 separate pages, more or less by topic, with
the hope that you will be able to more readily get to those sections
of the site that you really want to access.

The following pages are available below:

General Amateur Radio Files - Construction/Modification Projects,
Reference / Info Files, more specifically, ALL files NOT related
  to Elecraft Kits.

Elecraft Kits (General) - Files regarding:

Broadband Noise Generator You Can Build - For Xtal Filter Alignment

Elecraft K2-Related Files - Files specific to the K2

  Elecraft K1 KX1-Related Files - Files specific to the K1 KX1

SCANS of Elecraft Kit PC Boards

Hi Tom,

Congratulations. That's a big improvement. I haven't looked at every
item, but what I've seen so far looks fine. An indexed access method
is far superior to the linear search method you had until now. Even with
broadband it was a bit tedious to access things on your Web page.

RE: [Elecraft] W1 Software Functions?

2006-12-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Did you download the Windows software? If so the default display shows that
you can monitor both the forward power and SWR as moving bars and with
numerical readouts in their own windows.

That's the default. Then you can start pulling up other data.

Clicking REVERSE will change the SWR bar and data window to show reverse
power rather than SWR.

In the SETTINGS drop-down window you can chose between having the windows
display and the LEDs on the W1 display average power or peak power, and you
can select Peak-Hold LED ON which does just that: the LED on the W1
representing the highest power reached will stay on.

For operating convenience you can adjust the behavior of the range and power
LEDs on the W1 to have them decay more quickly or slowly when RF drops or,
if you're not interested in the W1 LEDs because you are using your computer,
you can turn them off.

If you want your settings to be remembered next time you use the W1, don't
forget to click on SAVE in the SETTINGS drop down!

You could always go to a Liquor store and get some Everclear, pure spirits.

However, cleaning of the Elecraft boards is NOT necessary nor desirable.
You never know what the plastics in today's parts will do in the presence of
solvents. Use of the cut off acid brushes will work, but only as long as
the solvent and brush are clean. They quickly load up with excessive flux
and rosin, if there was excessive presence of these in the solder joints.

[Elecraft] K1 Receives as good or better than K2

2006-12-13 Thread Steve Watkins
I have read the 25 reasons commonly found for K2 poor reception, and many other
posts.

My K2 receives, transmits, and I get good reports. All of the resistance and
voltage checks were right on the mark. The alignment was done by the manual,
but as I recall there were some times that I did not hear real sharp changes
when aligning. It just seems that the K1 is receiving a bit better than the K2.

Shouldn't the K2 receive better than the K1?

Would realigning with a better source (N-gen vs. by ear) possibly be the cure?

Thank you ahead of time for any suggestions that may help me solve what I
think? is a problem. Heck, maybe the K1 is just that good and out hears the
K2?

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 questions

2006-12-13 Thread Chuck Guenther
I assume you mean the rtc (real-time clock). It is on (or at least starts
out that way, with power on). However, after some time of operation, I get
not inst. The DSP filters work fine-- I just can't call them up in the
menu to edit them or make changes without doing the power on/off.

So far have not heard from Elecraft support on this.

2.) Referring to the KDSP2 Manual, page 38, troubleshooting: The middle of
the page gives the following symptom (which I experience frequently): AFIL
works but I can't access DSP or clock menus when I press Display The
manual goes on to suggest turning the K2 off then back on. This works for
me, but is there a better fix for this? The manual also says to let us
know if this happens frequently. I have e-mailed Elecraft support
regarding this.

RE: [Elecraft] KDSP2 questions

2006-12-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

If you get the not inst message it means that the KDSP2 is not being
recognized.
The fact that it is intermittent indicates that there is a bad solder
connection somewhere.
You might try re-flowing the solder on the KDSP2 board.

RE: [Elecraft] K1 Receives as good or better than K2

2006-12-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Steve,

Are you perhaps confusing 'hearing louder' with 'hearing better'?
The K1 has an extra stage of audio amplification, so signals may appear
louder - but listen for the extremely weak signals, you should find the K2
is better in digging out those weak ones - that is the K2's better MDS and
Dynamic Range parameters working for you.

The K1 is good, but the K2 is even better in weak signal reception.

[Elecraft] K2: Hi Cur on 30m

2006-12-13 Thread Mike Markowski

I just noticed I'm getting a Hi Cur message only on 30m.

The set up:

- K2/100 into dummy load (KAT100 disconnected)
- Power set to 100 W
- CAL CUR set to 3.50 A
- When CAL CUR is 4.10 A, current drawn on 30m levels out at 4.02 A
- When I drop to 85 to 90 W, 30m draws just under 3.50 A
- All other bands draw less than 3.50 A
- I qso on all bands with no apparent problems

If anyone has been through this, what do you think - have I possibly
zorched my PAs? Should I recalibrate? (It could have even been this
way all along I never noticed, since I often have the power level less
than 100 W.) Or am I being paranoid over a half amp?

Thanks for any ideas,
Mike ab3ap

RE: [Elecraft] K2: Hi Cur on 30m

2006-12-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

First, count the number of turns on L4, L5 and L6 in the KPA100 - count the
turns that go through the center of the core rather than the outside. An
extra turn on these windings would produce the Hi-cur on 30 meters.

How old is your KPA100? If the kit was ordered mid-2005, then you may have
the inductive resistors at R19 and R20 - that problem usually appears at 20
and 17 meters, but occasionally shows up on 30 meters as well. You can
obtain replacement resistors from mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] .

I don't think you have 'zorched' the PA transistors. If the turns on the
KPA00 low pass filter toriods are correct and all the C3x capacitors are
correct, you may want to install the KPA100UPKT and see if that brings
things under control (that upgrade kit does include new R19 and R20
resistors).

Don W3FPR
