By any chance did you remove the polarizing strip instead of just the thin protective strip on the LCD module? I did that and ordered a new one. I dug the old strip out of the trash, cleaned it off and stuck it back on so I could continue building--it's still there working just fine. Bob, N7XY On Feb 11, 2007, at 7:33 PM, Matthew D. [Elecraft] K1 speaker stopped working
This failure occurred about a year ago. My fix was to put a jumper on the ear phone jack to turn on the speaker at all times. Don't like this fix but it works for now. Part nr for this jack is E620028 The K2 manual I have (I do not have a K2, but I do want one.) shows the same part nr. Sure wish there was a final fix for these problems for both the K1 and K2. 73, Ty, K1 #1423, BL2 Bored stiff? Loosen up... Download and play hundreds of games for free on Yahoo! [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for February 11th & 12th, 2007
Good Evening, Two very good nets. I wish I could have worked everyone I heard but some of you were very far down below the noise. I did get TF but there was one very, very weak signal on 40 meters which I simply could not get a letter. However, it appears the hail signs along with calling by areas has broken up the pileups quite nicely. I may simplify even further and try East, Mid, and All to work more rapidly. Tom works East and West and does well. He does have a lot more experience at this though ;) You heard me turn up my speed a few times but I made sure to go right back to call CQ. I wanted to run through Tom's list quickly so I could get back to you all. There was a little QSB on both 20 and 40 meters this evening but both bands were fairly quiet. Made it easier to run the net. On 40 I only got two before I handed off to Tom. I found a few of you had not gotten on the air by the time I passed the net but you were loud to me. For once I worked Fred, K6DGW, direct. Normally he is simply too close. I did get a little of his check in on 20 meters but it was tough copy. On 40 meters he was pretty good. I was also hearing the West Hills in Beaverton because I heard Karl, N7NLU, check in both times. I got a few weather reports but mostly just signal reports this evening. Southern California is having rain tonight much like I am having. Gloomy and chilly all day today. But it is my cleaning day so I don't notice the weather much. I did find a break in the rain to get my load of wood inside. Sam is guarding the fire so it does not go unstoked! We may even get a check in from Rupert once Geoff teaches his favorite pheasant how to peck out his callsign ;) Thank you for the support over the years. It is very nice to hear from you all and see what we can do each Sunday evening. Once I knock down the leaning trees I'll be able to hoist my antenna up to a better height. This will help me on 20 meters but I don't think I can find a tree tall enough to make much difference on 40 meters. But the windstorm did clear a large swath of land for a prospective loop antenna. Now if I can convince Karl to drive out in the outback to help me hoist it ;) I do need a couple of fills for rig and serial number but there is always next week and the one after that. If there are any errors please do not hesitate to bring it to my attention and provide the correct data. Until next week stay well, Kevin. RE: [Elecraft] k1 back light clear plastic covering?
Tom, Is one end of the white plastic free to move upward? If so, you do not have the clear plastic sheet. That 'plastic sheet' can be as simple as a piece of clear tape used to hold the end of the white plastic in place during packing and shipping. If it is not present, just install the backlight and don't worry about it. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > good eve, In the process of installing the back light for my K1 # > 1848, The instructions stated to remove the clear plastic that > covers the front of the back light. [Elecraft] Tuning noise on K2 - 40M
Hi, I was tuning around on 40M this evening and noticed some clicks when I tuned from 7119.82 to 7120.00. I started checking and I noticed this behavior from about 7050 through 7320...every 10 KHz. If I disconnect my antenna this problem goes away. The problem remains if I use the attenuator or change mode or filter settings. Disabling the AGC or changing from slow to fast has no effect. This appears to be only happening on 40M. Since the problem goes away when I remove the antenna, I'm wondering if it is due to some mixing product although it happens even when the band is quiet...but the antenna is connected. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] 160m activity?
Worked W5ESE on 1015 last night on 160! Scott was running 5 watts. If it hadn't been for the building QRN, I'd have copied him solid. Not to mention DXers who ignored us and QRMed us as well. Until recently 1800-1820 was fairly free from DXing. Some of the newbies are beginning to remind me of the RTTY bunch on the higher bands, especially 40. "Keep outta 'digital' territory, but the whole band is ours during a RTTY contest!" QRP can be very challenging, especially on 160. This makes it fun, but the DXers are beginning to run off the ragchewers, what few of them are left. SSB splits have ruined 40 CW during SSB contests involving DX stations, and with 80 cut down to 100 khz. on CW, I'm afriad the same thing will happen there soon. Hope to meet some of you "just plain QSO" guys on 160 one evening on CW. I have no problem working across the country (or even across the Pacific) during a contest, but getting someone to answer a CQ for a casual contact can be tough. Another reality, however, is that 160 is a tough place to work QRP. Two reasons. Noise levels are high, and propagation is challenging. My good friend and neighbor, N6WG (in Silicon Valley) plugs away at contesting with his K2, including all the 160 contests. He has great fun with it, but only because he takes his antenna system very seriously. One of the good reasons for running power on 160 is to get over the high noise levels. I've got an S1 noise level most of the time. It's not uncommon for me to read a guy 579, but he can't read me, because his noise level is S8. 73, Jim Brown K9YC Santa Cruz, CA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The experience of the other broadcasters in the San Francisco area is that IBOC on FM (the real name of "HD Radio") causes significant degradation of signal. IBOC on AM is even worse. Yep...when WAMU was jiggering stuff pre HD Radio programming, I noticed that there was a huge reduction in reception up here. Now during the begging sessions, no one mentions the contributions coming in from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the southern part of Virginiabecause folks simply can't hear the station. Unless "they" come up with a better system, I and a lot of my colleagues want no part of it. Gee, have you forgoten that "Less is More" can always explain away a downturn? RE: [Elecraft] KBT2 non-original battery replacements?
Sverre, The only thing I can say is that the battery used in the K2 is a Panasonic (1229 I recall), and would be built to whatever quality standards and considerations that are characteristic of that manufacturer and battery line. Certainly with any battery there is a risk of leakage, explosion, etc., but most SLA batteries are pretty rugged. While I cannot make any real recommendations, it sounds like you know what to look for in terms of battery safety aspects, so read the specifications and literature for those parameters and base your decision on that research. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I have the KBT2 battery mounting hardware for my K2, but so far > no battery. > The Elecraft 2.9 AH gel-cel battery costs $30.00. For those hams that help with emergency communications, an XM satellite radio can be a great help whether or not your subscribe to their service. Channel 247 is a free channel and is always on. If you are have local emergencies (weather, natural, or man made) there will be useful information repeatedly broadcast over this channel. For those of you that have a car that has an XM satellite radio in it, and you haven't gotten the service, check this channel out. It is quite handy. Re: [Elecraft] 160m activity?
Sadly, I must agree with Jim Brown, K9YC. By the way Jim, it was a pleasure working you the other day. With a two letter call and a big signal like your's I mistakenly had you pegged as another "DX-Snob." Randy, you might keep an ear open for Jim, he's a very nice guy with an excellent station. Randy, I am on 160 quite regularly and it is fairly rare to find a QSO. The only way the rest of us are going to ever get any use out of the band is to use it and generate some CQ's. Otherwise the DX'ers will continue having their way. The other morning I was lucky enough to hook up with K8MP, Delaware OH and KD8BZY, Poda? WA. My friend Joe had a good signal & was solid copy, whereas I never did figure out Randy's QTH for sure. Anyway, both good ragchew stations and close enough to you that either one should be easy copy. Another good guy on 160 fairly often is K6XK, Rolfe IA. There are others, but you have to be persistant. It helps if you have a good antenna, in fact as Jim said, a good antenna is vital to success. Living on a city lot 90' X 60' with all the noise attendant, I've had the most success with a Ground Plane on my roof using a Butternut HF-2V with the 160 meter add-on module. I have the top hat and three radials that go to the edge of the roof, then "wrap-around" the yard, either on the back yard fence or in the front yard just running along the eves. While it certainly is not in a league with what Jim, W9YC, has, I have NO trouble working the East Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska during contests such as the one we had two weeks ago. I am running power though, 300W on a pair of 811A's. Don't expect too much on 5 watts unless your antenna is very much better than mine. As Jim says, the noise will eat your signal. Another nice thing about a vertically polarized signal is the ground wave. You'll find working 100 miles in the daytime at high noon is no trick at all, and you can do that QRP. The secret of course is the very low noise on 160 when there is no skip. Some years ago I use to have a regular sked with W6TYP in San Jose 100+ miles from Santa Rosa on AM. I was running a 6L6 crystal oscillator plate modulated. You know, if you modulate very deeply on negative peaks, the oscillator will start to become unstable, so about the best you can do is 50% modulation. That's real QRP! 12 Watts carrier, 6 Watts peak double side-band, 3 Watts peak each single side-band X 50% modulation! Hi Hi Of course finding anyone to work within 100 miles on daytime ground-wave is a nearly insurmountable challenge. Anyway Randy, good luck & stick with it. Not that they need to be perfect or textbook, but you can't throw away 10-20 dB and expect to make Q's like you can on the higher bands. I suggest you do something like what I did when I lived on a small lot in Chicago. I managed to work across the country with 100 watts, and worked at least one 160 contest QRP. See details at http://audiosystemsgroup.com/K9YC/k9yc160TopLoad.htm Note that while my "counterpoise" was a big wrought iron fence and some short radials, another ham in Chicago uses the HVAC system in his sprawling suburban house as a counterpoise. :) When I moved from Chicago to the side of a mountain near Santa Cruz last spring, I took down the antenna and re-installed it at my new qth. I started with about 25 radials, adding more as I have time (and find the copper), and I now have 40. No surprise -- the antenna works even better here. :) 73, Jim Brown K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I see the concern about heat and will comply, but I have VERY large hands and do not want to attempt to ground both sides if it is not needed. Thanks I've found it to be much more difficult to ground the xtals AFTER THE FACT... I found it a lot easier to attach the grounding wires BEFORE I inserted and soldered xtals onto the PC board. It's not difficult to use clipped component leads and pre-attach them to the sides of the xtals and THEN install the xtals and grounding wires all at one time. By pre-viewing the PC board holes for each xtal, it's not difficult to get a pretty good idea of where the grounding leads need to be installed onto the sides of the xtal. And the grounding leads can be bent just a bit, AFTER being attached to the xtal case, in order to achieve proper seating of the xtal. Hope this helps. 73, Tom HammondN0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. I know it's a pip-squeek of an antenna for the top band, but I thought I'd give it a try. 73, Randy, KS4L ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Speaker jack
This speaker jack problem applies only to basic K-2's...I assumed that Dohn was talking about a basic K-2...The basic K-2 cover is not installed in a KPA-100 so the external speaker jack cannot cause a problem...I always use the external speaker jack to obtain output to the computer sound card when aligning the filters with Spectrogram...This is how I discovered that the new style jacks were different from the old ones...When an external speaker (or a cable to your computer) is plugged into one of these new speaker jacks, the internal speaker goes mute and there is no output to the computer...Reversing the "AF" and "SP" connections at the jack (page 79) corrects it... Jerry, wa2dkg >>I have encountered several of these "faulty" jacks...If the jack has a 7/16" >>hex nut to attach it to the panel, it is a new jack in the >>Elecraft world >>and it is internally wire in reverse to the originals, which had a knurled >>thumb screw type nut...The fix is >>simple...Referring to page 79 in the >>manual, reverse the positions of wires "AF" and "SP"... >>Jerry, wa2dkg ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] OT: radio broadcast commercials
Interesting that you mention the FM Broadcast band predominance of commercials. They irritate me too, but I have settled on a local non-commercial FM station here. They broadcast only classical music, but it is listener supported and NO commercials and is available 24 hours a day. BTW, if anyone wants to hear what I am talking about, you too can listen worldwide - they stream on the internet in 5 formats and are available on C-band and Ku-band as well. Any local cable company can retransmit their feed free! If you are interested in some nice commercial free classical music, check out http://www.theclassicalstation.org/ Apologies for the reflector bandwidth to those not interested. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I didn't even know that folk still listened to AM Broadcast anymore, HI > HI! [Elecraft] KBT2 non-original battery replacements?
I have the KBT2 battery mounting hardware for my K2, but so far no battery. The Elecraft 2.9 AH gel-cel battery costs $30.00. Unless someone convinces me, I don't see any point in transporting a battery across 9 time-zones, when similar batteries seem to be available locally. But that's the question, is a battery a battery? I can get a 2.6 Ah battery with the same measurements for about $15.00 (NOK 90) from one vendor and I can get another one for about $40.00 (NOK 260 - Asahi, Made in China). I would guess that these batteries may have different life expectancies, but I can live with that. But, do I take a risk with my K2 if I install the cheaper battery - leakage, explosion ..., i.e. what should I look for? 73 Sverre LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 Modifications http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. [Elecraft] Re: 160m Activity?
Hmm, interesting to note about the every 10 kHz. I have no such problems here and wonder if others have noted the same that Jim has. I'd be happy to conclude that my radio isn't broken if it doesn't pick up those carriers, though, HI HI! I'll check it out again tonight but this morning I did a quick scan and found an annoying S3-4 carriers around 1841.25, and 1854.62 but don't remember hearing them normally. I also heard a fainter carrier around 1830.0, however I don't ever remember these being an issue in the past while operating during the evening hours. Of course, maybe my saturation level of AM Broadcast is not so prevalent here in PA as it could be in CA. I didn't even know that folk still listened to AM Broadcast anymore, HI HI! Just as a side note I've even found FM to become more annoying to listen to and have recently switched to one of the satellite based radios which I thought I would never do, but it is much more pleasant to listen to what I intend to tune into rather than the many commercials that plague the commercial broadcast stations otherwise. I used to constantly switch between various FM stations whenever I heard a commercial, and found that I was doing that more than I was listening to music, but not anymore. It seemed that radio stations were coordinating their commercial times, as it seems that TV stations do as well. [Elecraft] Re: 160m activity?
It could be an "American frequency" designation, just as 7040 kHz was the American QRP frequency as well while the rest of the world was 7030 kHz (although according to QRP ARCI the transition has begun to 7030, but I still find plenty of activity around 7040 anyway, at least when there isn't too much interference from RTTY). What is the suggested QRP frequency on 160m for the rest of the world, or at least Region 1, if 1810 would be out of bounds? The last link suggested 1843 kHz for 160m, but that was in the SSB column and didn't list an alternative for CW. I think the original poster, who was based somewhere here in the USA, would do well to first try out the American QRP frequency before trying DX QRP specific frequencies, though. For reference, here are some links for more QRP Frequencies: http://home.alltel.net/johnshan/qrp_ss_freqs.html http://www.zerobeat.net/qrp/qrpbands.html http://www.qsl.net/kj6vu/qrpfreq.html Of course, I've found that operating ANYWHERE with the K2 is very possible and many times not even discerned between my 100W rig. So please don't limit yourself to only those frequencies! I spent most of my operating time on 40m last winter around 7010 kHz or so, but if I want to try to find other QRP operators I tend to gravitate toward those frequencies listed in the above links. The most important aspects of a communication link involve the propagation path and secondarily the antenna, not so much the transmit power. If a propagation path doesn't exist then 30 dB more power isn't going to help. A good antenna always helps (when there is propagation path), and helps on Rx and Tx. I've been able to work most states Is this an American QRP frequency? In Region 1 it's the edge of the legal frequency on this band. It used to be 1.800 to 2.000, years ago when I earned my G4ICV, but that lower 10 KHz is out of bounds. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
