Re: [Elecraft] K3 KFL3B-FM Change?

2007-10-27 Thread David Woolley

In the telephone world, equipment allows out to 4Kc.
That was considered optimal for intelligibility vs bandwidth.

The telephone network bandwidth is 3.1kHz (300 to 3400Hz). 4kHz was the
analogue bearer channel separation, and allows for realistic shape
factors on the channel filters. On digital signals, the 8kHz sampling
rate allows the use of realistic anti-aliasing filters when the audio
bandwidth is 3.1kHz.

For swl use, 16Kc is not unreasonable for people with good ears, that gives
8Kc

The channel spacing for SW broadcast stations is 5kHz, although I
suspect they are are allowed to overlap each other. I'm sure there are
standards for this, but I suspect a well maintained transmitter is
limited to a similar audio bandwidth as the telephone system, or less. I
would think that one would normally expect to be received with a filter
that was well down the skirt at 10kHz, so as to suppress the adjacent
carriers. Propaganda stations and commercial ones in a poorly regulated
environment might well transmit more bandwidth. (Medium and long wave
transmissions use 9kHz channel spacing.)

Re: [Elecraft] K2 power control loop damping (was 'KPA100 Problem')

2007-10-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

A bit of operational theory first:
The K2 power control circuit is a feedback control loop which includes
the gain of the entire transmit chain in its control loop. As a result,
when the KPA100 is added, the loop gain for some K2s is increased so
much that the loop oscillates. A quick study of feedback control
systems will shed some light on the reasons - feedback control loops
should ideally be 'critically damped', but one cannot do that easily
while still allowing a change (KPA100 in/out) in the gain of the loop.
A compromise between the high power operation and low power control
performance must be made - the loop must be overdamped for low power,
while being slightly underdamped at high power.

The "fix" (it is really a performance customization for each K2):
Resistor R98 on the bottom of the K2 RF Board can be used to control
damping of the power control loop. Increasing the value will provide
more loop damping (and reduce the oscillations). Too much resistance
will cause the loop to be severly overdamped and the low power K2 will
never get up to the point of full control.

Increase the value of R98 until the base K2 power output on 10 meters
drops significantly. It is the choice of each builder just how much
power loss will be tolerable on 10 meters. It will require at least 9
watts to drive the KPA100 to full power output on 10, so one would not
normally want to increase R98 above the point where the power output on
10 meters is much less than 10 watts, but if R98 is too low, the high
power output can oscillate forever.

A temporary variable pot can be used to determine the correct value for
your K2 - use a 2k (or larger) pot in place of R98, and after you
determine the correct point, remove it and measure its resistance - use
the next lower standard value resistor size for R98.

The proper value for your K2 is that which reduces the high power
oscillation (on 40 meters where the transmitter gain is highest) after 2
to 3 seconds while not reducing the 10 meter base K2 power output
significantly.

Jim Stoneback wrote:

Dealing with the last unresolved problem with my K2/100:

When using the K2/KPA100 on CW, regardless of power setting (above 11
watts, that is), the power output fluctuates above the set power level
by about 10%. With the power setting at 90 watts, the output will
alternate between about 98 and 88 watts, at about one cycle per 2
seconds. At 30 watts, its +/- about 4 watts, etc. Using a dummy
load. It will do this indefinitely.

All other aspects of the KPA100 operation are normal. With PA turned
OFF in the menu, the barefoot K2 does not exhibit this power
fluctuation. Any suggestions on what to look at?

Some HAL Communications products, including the DXP-38, support Pactor,
which they call "P-mode". You can also buy old AEA PK-232MBX TNCs
cheaply at hamfests and you-know-where, and later versions of the
PK-232MBX included Pactor I. If your is older, Timewave will sell you
the upgrade EPROMs that include Pactor. Some Kantronics multimode TNCs
also support(ed) Pactor I.

[Elecraft] FS: Elecraft K2 (15W, tuner, NB, AF) $695

2007-10-27 Thread Andrew Moore
I know I'll regret this but it's the only way I'll force myself to
build the QRP homebrew station I've been saying I'll build for the
past 20 years. As long as there's a working rig in the shack, I find
the homebrew stuff easy to talk about but hard to get moving on.
Especially if the existing rig is a K2...

So:

Elecraft K2 No. 4958. "Firmware 2.04P 1.09"
Bought it new in June 2005.
Built it myself. Very clean build, very proud of the soldering /
construction quality
(prior to this one, built another K2, two K1's, and a KX1. EE background here).

Last month I did a complete tune-up / realignment on it.

It works perfectly.

Options installed:

KAT2 (20 W internal tuner, with dual antenna ports)
KNB2 (noise blanker)
KAF2 (audio filter & clock)

$695 includes shipping within U.S.
Current Elecraft price is $639 plus shipping, unassembled.

Right now I have 2 AEA PK-232MBX in service with two
software-controlled Ten-Tec MF/HF receivers for receiving
SITOR ("commercial AMTOR") USCG marine safety broadcasts and
general monitoring of HF Marine Public Coast stations - yes,
there are still some on the air in the US offering Morse,
RTTY, and SITOR service to high-seas vessels. Both PK232MBXs
will do Pactor I, and I do have the software for it. To use
this with the K2 would require setting up a complex RS-232
switching arrangement to switch the K2 from the RigBlaster to
the TNC and the TNC from the Ten-Tec receiver to the K2 -
do-able because I do have the cross-over switch - but not
exactly what I am looking for.

Oh yes - this is in addition to the two PK-88s that handle my
VHF packet and APRS transceivers and the soon-to-be-added
9600 baud TNC for UHF packet.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried Linux (Red Hat and
Mandrake) in the past and have not been totally happy with the
setup and the fact that several programs essential to both my
hamming and my professional operations had no Linux equivalents.

As I explained in another posted message, I can do P-I with my
existing TNC and software but that was not what I was looking

Understood!! That's why we - the Portland Regional Hospital
Emergency Amateur Radio Team (HEARTNET) decided on Pactor I.

I would have no problem running it with an existing TNC and
software, but I did want a soundcard solution. There was one
about ten years ago that was written for a specific sound chip,
but the author abandoned development on it.

 Thanks for the input.

[Elecraft] K2 power output/power on Oddidity

2007-10-27 Thread Will

Hi all,

After some weeks away from my K2 construction, I'm just at the
point of going through the Part III Alignment, when I noticed two odd
things about my K2:

-First, whenever (in fact always now) I power up my K2, I see he usual
'Elecraft' display light up as normal. But instead of proceeding to the
frequency display, I see a brief display of 'P 14.6'. I can repeat this
 everytime. Hmmm...

-On page 78, as I begin to set the power control, the display changes to
show 'P 14.6' again, with the number increasing slightly as I turn the
power control knob slowly clockwise to 14.8 (when I'm really meaning for
it to be 2W). Out of curiousity, I switch into TUNE mode briefly with
DISPLAY set to the meter, and see the current jump from .360 A to 3.8A,
 along with a 'hicur' warning.

Now, would I be right in suspecting something is amiss with the power
output control or I've got a short someplace that's creating a boost in
output power someplace?

Thanks for any insight.

[Elecraft] K3 Mojo

2007-10-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Okay - after my K3 (S/N 10) has been nothing but bits since early July while
writing the K3 kit assembly manual, I finally actually hooked on an antenna
today and was enjoying playing with the outstanding filtering options while
tuning across 20 meters.

Heard an old friend, Gena, UA0FAI ,on Sakhalin Is. on 14.022 calling CQ, so
I gave him a call. He claims I'm rocking his ears with 589. I don't have my
KPA3 installed at the moment, so the output here was 10 watts into a 75 foot
end fed wire.

Nice "first QSO on my K3" for the log. Clearly, the K3 is another Ham
operator's Mojo.

And, clearly, it's instantly addictive...

Now I have to finish reading Wayne's nice Owner's manual. Obviously I found
the POWER switch. Now what's that button over..

[Elecraft] K3: who are the FTers and how many have been shipped?

2007-10-27 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
HI all:

Being very part time QRP in the CQWW SSB (phone -- yuck), I was
outside today playing with antennas, planning, tracing coax runs under
the leaves, etc. I somehow managed to have my RG17 run hooked up to
the 80m inverted V. Guess there's little loss there! I'll be rolling
out the 7/8" Heliax for the back tower 20m yagi soonit's been
sitting in the garage since late Summer but now that the wx is finally
turning, my brain kicks into antenna time.

Anyhow, it dawned on me that there were to be 15 K3 Field Testers, but
I don't know who they are. All that comes to mind are:

W0YK
NØSS
N6TR
K2VCO
AC7AC
AB7R

I'm not counting Wayne no Eric. So who are the others? I've probably
left out some obvious guys, but listening to SSB has fried my brain at
the moment (remember that my K2 doesn't have the SSB module, so I have
to use brand Y - which is an FT817).

And as for received radios, looks like we are up to SN #27 (starting
at SN#22 and with SN#66 magically shipped first to be with fellow
Elecraft SN#666 - something devilish going on here?). Did I miss any?
Just checking. Wonder when the flood gates will open.

Tnx!

de Doug KR2Q
PS I'm looking forward to a photo of Lisa pushing a cart filled with
K3's (instead of holding just one).

Hi Aki!

It was a pleasure to work you. I also worked AC7AC's friend UA0FAI and

All had good signals which sounded like they were next door.

As I said on the air, I hope you will receive your K3 soon.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 capacitor question

2007-10-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Werner,

Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted way of marking
capacitors, so I can only guess a bit here.

What I do know is that the 100 pf capacitors that have shipped with
recent Elecraft kits have short leads. Those small leads tend to hide
themselves stuck in other components. Investigate any capacitors that
you have with short leads - 100 pf will be marked '101' (plus other
manufacturer's markings). Look in all the bags and search for
capacitors sticking in things like the tape on the relay tube and similar.

As for the 33 pf capacitor, what is the diameter of the one you have in
hand? If it is approximately 1/4 inch diameter or smaller, is is the
one to use at C26. The C5F capacitor would be a larger disk ceramic or
it might be one like the other yellow high voltage capacitors used for
the Low Pass Filter.

hi,

I am working on the KPA 100 and I have a problem to identify C26 (33pF,
50V) and find C 41 (100pF, 101) in the provided capacitors.
I found one disk capacitor labelled 33, CO, but then I cannot find C5F, which
should also be "33", but 500V or 1KV.

I am one of those who have been waiting for K3 arrival.

I worked Victor, K2VCO on 14MHz CW with my K2 this morning.
His K3 is #7 and my K2 is #4503.
This is my first experience to hear K3 sings.

Hi Aki!

It was a pleasure to work you. I also worked AC7AC's friend UA0FAI and
several other JA stations.

All had good signals which sounded like they were next door.

As I said on the air, I hope you will receive your K3 soon.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2007-10-27 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Last week I was on the road but two folks ran the net: K6DGW and N0SS. I am
still working on a report but this note will be posted first. I was on the
road because I was coming home from Pacificon where I got to hold a K3. I also
had a 30 minute demo of features I had not noticed while reading the manual.
Wayne told me more about the radio than I would ever use in my lifetime. My
interaction with a radio is fairly simple: a few buttons, a few knobs, and that
is it. I used many of the features of the K2 just to say I used them but
found, during normal usage, much of the detailed UI is not part of my world.
Maybe I need to expand a little bit :)
The weather was quite nice here this week. Sun and 55 degrees or so. Today
I got to work outside so I called the county and found I could burn. Now my
back yard has far less clutter in it than it did this morning. Just before
dusk, as I was getting the fire pushed in so I could make dinner, I heard some
noises above me on the hill side. After the wind storm last year that area is
very hard to get through for anyone larger than a squirrel. I did not get a
glimpse of it but think there may have been a deer spying on me about ten feet
away. The fire was quite obvious through smell, sound, and light. I think she
was just curious.
I was able to get on 20 meters twice this week and the signals were quite
good. Yesterday we got hit by the solar wind and there were aurora which
fought their way through the very bright full moon. Hopefully that wind fed
the ionosphere enough so we can make good contacts tomorrow evening. That moon
interfered with my view of the comet in Perseus. I could not find a place
where I could see the constellation and put the moon behind something so I was
unable to find the comet. Tonight there is enough haze to let the moonshine
effect the entire sky so I'll not see it tonight either. However, it is high
in the sky in a circumpolar site so I may get a shot at it another night. If I
catch it I'll drag out the telescope to get a better look.

Please join us tomorrow evening.

  Tomorrow:

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help)

Please join us:

Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz

73,

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 21st & 22nd, 2007

2007-10-27 Thread Kevin Rock
Good evening,
If there are any errors in the following lists please remember I am getting
some of this information third hand. Be kind :) The trip back from Pacificon
was quite pleasant. The wind was not howling (well at least after the first
two hours) and the rain was not pouring down so heavily you could not see the
road. This made life in the driver's seat much more comfortable. My hands did
not hurt from holding the wheel with a death grip and my back was much more
relaxed. I also did not feel like I was about to die in the next few seconds!
(Don't ask about the trip down through the Siskiyous.)
This week I've had a chance to get caught up on some of my chores but found
that meeting all those people gave me a sore throat and a cold. Today I feel
much better and can thank my time outside for much of my recovery. I did not
work too hard but I got to monitor my fire (as per Smokie's instructions) and
enjoy the day. Clearing the construction material and a few of the many limbs
was enough exercise and I received a nice sauna experience poking the fire.
Maybe that boiled the meaness out of me :)

On to the lists =>

On 14049.99 and 14050.50 kHz at ~2300z:
K2HYD - Ray - NC - KX1 - 608
KS7D - Mike - FL - K2 - 4443
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
N0SS - Tom - MO - K3 - 008
KJ7BS - Mark - AZ - TS-850s
K9ZTV - Kent - MO - K3 - 0021 congrats one of the first kits!
K3NR - Cass - GA - ?
VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968
KL7CW - Rick - AK - KX1 - 798
K6DGW - Fred - CA - TX-850 at 1.5 KW through 3 element beam

On 7045 kHz at 0200z:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K3 - 008
K2HYD - Ray - NC - KX1 - 608 QNI #105
W0JFR - John - CO - K2 - 4507
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K2 - 5345
K9ZTV - Kent - MO - K3 - 0021 QNI #15!!
VE6ITA - John - AB - K2 - 5384

Tomorrow I get to run through this process again. Back to back database
roles for me I guess :) But that is how I keep things straight. Now for
enough time to get the web site refreshed and renewed and I'll feel better
about things. Once the insulation is up and the drywall is hung I'll move back
to the front room and enjoy Sam's company and the warmth of the fire. Luckily
for me it has not gotten too cold back here. Pat used to bug me about getting
so cold while I was working in the room but she used to warm me up.
Occasionally she would shriek and then punch me but I would be warmer ;) Her
father was a Golden Gloves boxer during WWII and her punches would land me on
my rear. I wonder what would have happened if I had not blocked them? The
girl was deadly! However, she kept me mostly in line.

   Until tomorrow stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control In Absentia )
