[Elecraft] K3 current status of TX INH?

2008-01-30 Thread Jerry.Van
Thanks for the response Dave. Yes the Acom (and other amps w. qsk
keying
loops) will work well without TX EN/INH wired. But Acom recommends
using it

whenever possible. It provides not only a safety valve to cutoff the
transmitter instantly when there's a serious fault in the amp, but also
potentially provides improved qsk if the transceiver's timing fully
supports

the keying loop.

I was just informed of a reflector posting of Dec 23 that I must have
missed

(apologies) from Jerry N8BM at
http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2007-December/079341.html

It's obvious upon reading Jerry's posting that an amplifier keying loop
function is NOT yet implemented on the K3, despite the firmware change
to TX
INH - there's currently no way to get the K3 out of inhibit mode and
begin

xmsn if it ignores PTT/key input while in inhibit mode.

So all we can do is wait and hopefully Elecraft will eventually announce
that they have indeed implemented support for amplifier keying loop in a
new

firmware update.

-
Barry,

Thank you for your most welcome post and the mention of my December
post. I agree with you wholeheartedly and I'd like to take the
opportunity to post a possible solution that both of us seem to share.

I am thinking that a 3rd parameter for TX INH could be implemented.
Let's call it "TX INH - KEY LOOP" or whatever. When that function is
selected it will perform in a similar manner as HI=INH except that the
K3 will be allowed to transmit by its normal mechanisms. The sequence
would be; key the K3, KEY OUT on the K3 goes low, a low being sensed at
the amp's KEY IN would start the amp's internal sequence and when that
sequence is completed the amp's KEY OUT line goes low, the amp's KEY OUT
line (connected to the K3's TX INH port) which is now low causes the K3
to start sending RF immediately and without it's normal 10-15 ms. delay.
In the situation (and Barry seems to agree) where the amp's KEY OUT line
goes high while the K3's KEY OUT is still low I am thinking that the amp
is sensing some problem either internally within itself or some external
problem in which case the K3 should immediately drop RF and cause it's
KEY OUT line to go high. Finally, it would appear that some sort of
pull-up will be required which could be added by Elecraft or a user
following a procedure outlined by Elecraft.

I do hope that Elecraft will further consider the implementation of an
amp keying loop. While I realize that a key loop amp will key with or
without a keying loop I would prefer following an amp manufacturers
recommendation when they suggest its use.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Mics for K3

2008-01-30 Thread Robert Brigham
Bob et. al..,
I am in the process of matching my D-104 to my K2 with
a darlinton transistor emitter follower circuit to
bring the roughly 250kOhm element impedence down to
about 600 ohms. Got it to work fine with the K2
running QRP, but everything goes
to-hell-in-a-handbasket once I ramp up the power. I'm
powering the circuit off of the +5Vv pin the mic jack.
I've grounded the mic jack shield and inserted a
cap+toroid inductor filter on the +5v. This got the
QRP version on the air, but I clearly have to do more
when running 100w. So, if you can get the job done
with just a transformer, that may be the simplest
solution [and if you locate a good transformer forward
the part number :) ].

It turns out that mine is now 11 years old, and still sorta useful,

   Hi Don,

You are right getting a paper catalog was like pulling
teeth. They are tough to get a catalog from. But in their defense they
surely are not cheap. A 10 year old catalog is almost as good as a new
one. An old catalog number is always good, if the product changes they
will tell you the new best replacement. and any differences. Before I
retired and had tried to get a catalog by phone they would tell me who
had one I could possibly use. I did get a hand me down copy.

As a reference book they are worth their weight in gold. The
information in them and how to select the correct item is priceless.

Service is better than great. I'm in NJ and can call at 6P
and the order will be at my door the next day for standard UPS rates,
not overnight or extra charges for their prompt service. I don't ever
recall an "out of stock " order.

An amazing outfit.

[Elecraft] Corrected K3 MCU Firmware, rev. 1.66 (fixes ATU TUNE problem)

2008-01-30 Thread Don Rasmussen

Thanks Wayne,

But I am still exploring the more basic options for
K3, last night I used the NR button "in battle" for
the first time. 40m SSB at night. All transceivers
have the button it seems but the effect (or ineffect)
varies greatly.

To my amazement, the noise level reduced - a couple
S-units. There were no undesirable side affects, and
the recovered audio sounded pleasingly natural in
comparison to what I know of NR.

The biggest treat was, press the button and it worked,
no fussing with it to try to improve the effect - only
to be disappointed.

One simple button, every radio has it, but oh what a
difference.

Tonight we try the blanker or some other button to
find out how it's really supposed to work. ;-)

If you loaded K3 MCU revision 1.65, please load
revision 1.66 instead,
which fixes a problem with ATU TUNE that was reported
by a few
customers. Rev. 1.66 is now available on our web site.

In version 1.65, tapping ATU TUN would incorrectly use
the power level
set in the new TUN PWR menu entry, and afterward would
set the power
knob to this TUN PWR value.

The ATU TUNE power level is automatically controlled
by firmware (5 W
and 10 W are used, depending on the SWR). The TUN PWR
menu entry only
sets the power level for the regular TUNE switch.

[Elecraft] K3 current status of TX INH?

2008-01-30 Thread Dave G4AON

Barry

I run a K3/100 with an Acom 1000 on CW and can confirm the Acom 1000
doesn't need TX inhibit wiring. I cannot comment on other Acom
amplifiers. While the manual doesn't state the change over time of the
amplifier, discussion with the UK importer suggests it is changed over
prior to the 10 mS delay present with the K3 before RF appears.

The connections are a single phono to phono screened lead between the K3
and Acom for the keying and PL259 to PL259 for RF.

2008-01-30 Thread Larry Phipps
A router with DDNS support can do this automatically. Plus, the firewall
is only open to a piece of hardware that converts serial port data into
TCP port data... not to a PC. Nobody is going to hack into a black box
with dedicated firmware when there are millions of Windows machines out
there to hack into. There is very little risk in that, unless I'm
missing something (not unheard of, BTW ;-)

It's a bad idea to tie a secure connection to a resolveable name. Those are
much easier to spoof than an IP. But I guess its at least still better than
leaving it wide open. Although I don't think most firewalls will allow you
to put in a resolveable address. That would mean it would have to
technically re-resolve it whenever each packet came in. Or after each DNS

Hi Stephen. Check out DynDNS. They provide a free service that
correlates an alphanumeric IP alias address with your currently assigned
numeric IP address. A utility on your PC provides your address to their
server. The service is called DDNS. Some routers have this built in.
Instead of an address like nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn, the address of your PC
becomes something like g4dsp.homeip.net. The server finds you based on
its knowledge of your actual address. I believe this is discussed in one
of the sections of my website (www.telepostinc.com) under the heading
Remote Base Station Related Stuff...

I posted an email about this to the list in response to your earlier
inquiry, but I forgot to change the Subject (it was posted from a digest
entry), so you may have missed it. There is lots of interesting info
about the remote control system I use there.

Thanks to all with their help and advice which I must now mull over. One
thing that has (rather late in the day) occurred to me is that I do not

have

a static IP address from my ISP. So I could, presumably, look up the
address given and use that, accepting that I shall have to change the
settings every time I reboot the router which is very rarely.

2008-01-30 Thread Stephen Prior
Larry (thanks for the email) and Brett

Thanks for your continued thoughts on this. I'm not sure, however, that I
have made the situation clear enough. The computer (Mac) connected to the
K2 is at home and is the one with the dynamic IP address. Does it matter
what type of address the work network has?

I'm working outside of my experience here, as you can probably tell!

RE: [Elecraft] Remoting the K2

2008-01-30 Thread Brett Howard
The only problem is that the location with the dynamic IP is the station in
which he's connecting from. And if he was to lock down the connection at
the firewall to an IP he'd have to change that whenever he got a new dynamic
address.

Or after each DNS
cache flush.

I posted an email about this to the list in response to your earlier
inquiry, but I forgot to change the Subject (it was posted from a digest

about the remote control system I use there.

RE: [Elecraft] firmware update

2008-01-30 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Thanks! I like to hear a few success stories...

"Available" means that the firmware file exists on your PC. "Installed in
K3" means the firmware currently in the radio.. "Download" is ambiguous.
There's one "download" from the Elecraft FTP site into the Firmware folder
of your Personal Computer. Then there's a "download" of files from your PC
into the K3. Because of this ambiguity, I tried to avoid the use of
"download" in all the K3 Utility's messages and Help text. Instead I say
"copy files from Elecraft to your PC" and "Send files to K3" to distinguish
between the two "download" operations.

The K3 Utility should have copied the DSP2 code file from the Elecraft FTP
server to your Firmware Folder. I just tested it, and I got a copy of
HAUX0137.hex copied into my Firmware Folder when I clicked "Check Versions"
with "Copy files from Elecraft" selected.

However, this file is for the DSP within the KRX3 second receiver option
(DSP2). If you don't have the KRX3 option installed (and enabled, through
the CONFIG:KRX3 menu selection) then it can't be successfully "installed"
(sent to the radio). The KRX3 isn't yet released, but the K3 Utility is
being used by firmware developers to send firmware to a separate DSP board
for the 2nd receiver.

The KRX3 is more than just the DSP2, so they're not identical. The DSP2
(sometimes called the "aux" DSP) is a board that installs between the main
receiver's DSP board and the front panel board. The KRX3 2nd receiver
option consists of the AUX DSP board plus another board (or boards) that
carry the RF components (and a place to plug in filters).

In the K3 Utility Help text (which I recently beefed up a bunch, there's a
new K3 Utility version just published a few minutes ago), I mention in a
couple of places that DSP2 is for the optional KRX3 second receiver.

Pin 3 starts at about 20k for a second or less then jumps to well over 50k.

The schematic seems to show it as a ground.

You should be checking U4 Pin 3
Pin 4 is indeed ground.

[Elecraft] K1 RF Board - Resistance Checks

2008-01-30 Thread Joseph M. Durnal
I'm working on the RF board and I've reached the first chance to do
resistance checks in the manual and I have some questions and one
major concern.

There are a few checks that when I first touch the meter to it will
flash a few ohms and within a second go to the desired value.

For example (from PG 29):
With the meters negitave lead on the ground near J7,
P1 pin 8 reads about 150 ohms (it varies slightly from test to test)
for less than a second then goes over 100k ohms

U3 pin 3 shows 46 with the VOM set to 200K. I really don't know what
that means, I'm thinking that is 46,000 ohms, which is less than 200k
U3 pin 5 is shows 20 with the VOM set to 20K, again, I'm assuming that
is 20k, which is greater than 10k

Now for my major concern,
U4 pin 4 reads only 0.4 ohms - I think I have a problem here, but I
have no idea what it could be, the manual said it should be > 50k.
The schematic seems to show it as a ground.

I'm glad I started with a K1 - I don't think I was really ready for
it. I can't even figure out how to read my VOM (although I'm going to
go practice on some known value resistors while waiting for replies to
this e-mail). Still, when I get this radio to work, I'm sure going to
enjoy making QSOs. Then comes the K3 but I also hope to build a K2
down the road as well.

[Elecraft] K3 current status of TX INH?

2008-01-30 Thread Barry N1EU

There was much discussion in Nov/Dec of using the Aux I/O Pin 7 TX INH line
as part of a qsk keying loop interface with modern amplifiers (e.g. Acom).
Wayne indicated in December that the firmware change was being made (see
http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2007-December/079205.html)

Can someone confirm that selection of OFF/LO=INH/HI=INH is now in
production firmware?

I believe that Acom amplifier interfacing will require setting it to HI=INH
(i.e., a low level will enable tx). Is there a convenient +5V source for
wiring the required pull-up resistor to Aux I/O Pin 7?

To date, has anybody actually implemented this in their K3 - amplifier
interface and can report on how well it is working?

Thanks/73,
Barry N1EU

I think that might be hard to achive, because the K3 would have to know
whether you'd finished tuning or not. Knowing Elecraft, a mind reading
add-on is probably in the works.

Given that my new Heil desk mic doesn't have a locking PTT, I'd probably use
it for rag chew voice QSOs to avoid having to keep pressing the button down.
The only reason I haven't actually used it for that is that I don't use
phone that much.

You could also use a simple one or two FET/Transistor
preamplifier/buffer powered by the electret bias. There
are several such circuits floating around for the D-104.
They would require only minor modifications to use bias
on the mic lead instead of a separate wire or battery.

Yes, I agree, I purchased the West Mountain Radio Deluxe one and very
pleased with it.
It meant shipping to the UK, but well worth it, if you are going to do a lot
of crimping - I converted ALL 12V leads that didn't have some form of

[Elecraft] K3 #0215 - d/l probs again.

2008-01-30 Thread Mike

Hi Dick, and the Group.
I'm beginning to feel incompetent!!

Just tried loading the new firmware into my K3.
Much the same problem as my initial d/l.
All goes well right upto the 'Loaded DSP1 f/w version 01.52. Radio
responded with Version 00.00' point, and the K3 display shows E000202
err dse.

I re-loaded, & re-installed new USB/Serial Drivers from the Prolific site.
I re-loaded & re-installed the K3Util.
Same Result.

I tried Restore Config.
Same result.

I tried a Forced Firmware download, as on page 42 of the manual.
Same Result.

Comms test from K3UTIL to K3 are OK.

In all cases, clearing the E000202 msg from the K3 display brings back
the current frequency readout on VFO A, but VFO B continues to show ERR DS2.

Any Suggestions?

Mike, zl1mh.

BTW, I'm on dialup, so can't reply too quickly!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: KRC2 interface

2008-01-30 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

Hi Don,

Do you mean the K3 AUX I/O Pin 10 "KEYOUT-LP" line? The purpose of this
line is a bit fuzzy, to me anyway.

I based my KRC2 'needs' list based on page 21 of the KRC2 manual.

The paragraph at the top of the page states that the minimum required for a
K2 are:

W16 - AUXBUS
W18 - 12V (can be provided via external source)
W19 - 8R
W21 - to pass PC serial info to K2 (not needed in K3)
W23 - ditto W21

Table 3 states that the KRC2 uses 8R to determine TX/RX status, I would have
thought to inhibit band changing while transmitting.

I just tried the KRC2 without feeding it 8R from the K2 (W19 pulled). 8R is
indeed not 'needed' to handle the band info from the AUXBUS. Tried changing
bands on the K2 while key down or asserting PTT - it won't change. But the
K2 remembers the band change key press and does change once key down or PTT
is dropped & the KRC2 follows.

Anywho, it looks like the K2 is smart enough to not change bands while in TX
& the KRC2 will follow the AUXBUS as/when ordered. I'm sure the K3 is at
least that smart [ ;-) ] So I amend my KRC2 "needs" list to simply AUXBUS
and ground - GREAT!

Bill,

The KRC2 does not need the 8R input for use with the K2 or K3. Look at
page 20 of the KRC2 manual and you will see that the KRC2 uses 8R only as
an analog input.

The KeyOut signal timing is equivalent to the K2 8R signal.

RE: [Elecraft] Q: PowerPole connectors

2008-01-30 Thread Carl Clawson

To expand on what Ron said, what's important with crimping Anderson
connectors is to use a tool that doesn't just crush them. Many of the
inexpensive crimpers just flatten the connector. You need one that has
a semicircular recess on one side and a "finger" on the other side that
pushes a dent into the back side of the connector while leaving it in
an overall round shape. If you distort the overall shape the connector
will not go into the shell. http://www.dcpwr.com/ has a good crimper,
and if, like me, you use PowerPoles all over the place it's good to
have one. You can solder after crimping if you like. I never solder
them without first crimping them.

You might want to look at dd-wrt. It is an alternative software for several
types of home routers. I've run dd-wrt on the Linksys wrt-54gl and the
Linksys wrt-350n (hardware version 1) and I'm happy with it. Recent
versions of dd-wrt include DynDNS support (including several other dns

inbound services (ports) to specific pcs on your home network, in case you
have several.

RE: [Elecraft] Q: PowerPole connectors

2008-01-30 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The K3 is a "no solder" kit. You don't touch a soldering iron to build it
and get it on the air.

But, if you make up your own power cables, antenna cables, microphone
cables, computer interface cables, etc., you either need to buy them
preassembled, buy crimp type cables with the proper tools, or get out a
soldering iron.

For those builders who don't already have a suitable power cable handy and
who aren't adverse to a little soldering, Elecraft included a separate power
cable kit gratis with the K3.

Elecraft does recommend soldering the Anderson connectors although many
folks crimp them just fine. The issue with crimping is doing it properly.
For those who aren't experienced with the technique or who don't have the
proper, good quality crimping tools, soldering is much more likely to
produce the required low-resistance contact between cable and connector
terminal.

[Elecraft] ESD Mats

2008-01-30 Thread Lee Buller

Where can one find a inexpensive ESD mat? Or what can be used as an ESD mat?
Also, what about a ESD wrist attachment? Where do you find them?

Also, I guess you would hook them to the station ground?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 AGC

2008-01-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ed,

It certainly sounds like you have a bad solder connection there. It may
have worked just fine in the past and is just now developing enough
oxidation to be troublesome.
You may actually be looking in the wrong place if you are restricting
your search to U1. U1, U2, Q12 and their associated components are all
involved - including the RF Gain control on the front panel (and the
connectors to create the paths to the front panel too). In fact,
everything in the whole lower left corner of the schematic is
potentially suspect.

A brief description of the circuit - U1 mixes the 4913 kHz IF input with
the crystal and comes out with an output signal that is amplified by
U2b. The output of U2B is rectified by D1 and applied to Q12 which in
turn drives U2A. The output of U2A is sent to the microprocessor so it
can indicate the AGC level on the bargraph and also to the IF amplifier
to control the gain of that IC. Those points beyond D1 respond to DC
levels and those before D1 respond to the AC amplitude of the signal.

At this time I suspect a marginal solder joint somewhere in the signal path
from pin 8 of U12 on the RF board to pin 1 of 1 on the control board, or one

RE: [Elecraft] SWR Adjustment (Don't Worry about it)

2008-01-30 Thread Strode, Carl R

Don thanks for reinforcing the "Don't worry about it" part.

I fiddled around with the KAT1 adjustments last evening with all sorts of dummy
loads, RF probes, wattmeters, other rigs, antenna analyzers, etc.

The most valuable bit of awareness I came away with was that each method of
measurement produced a significantly different result. Coax lengths, number of
connections, different test equipment, physical layout, etc, injected a lot of
variables that are very difficult to quantify.

The very last thing I did was to compare the indicated output power and SWR
from my K1 to the K2 indications when connected to the same known load via a
Bird Wattmeter. Neither rig will display exactly 2.0:1 SWR into a known good
flat 100 and 25 ohm load.

On the K2, a 1.7 to 1.8 was the best I could get for both loads. Adjusting the
KAT1 R2 to maximum came into the ballpark - not spot-on, but at least on the
same team.

With the KAT1, I figgered that as long as the C9 null was done properly,
adjusting R2 for max indicated SWR will get me into the "Don't worry about it"
Zone.

One interesting thing I did notice was that after dashing thru the menus,
entering TUNE, adjusting CLS, CLP, output level, etc, the K1 microprocessor
appeared to become discombobulated from time to time. A momentary power-down
always cleared the cobwebs and got it back to normal.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: KRC2 interface

2008-01-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bill,

The KRC2 does not need the 8R input for use with the K2 or K3. Look at
page 20 of the KRC2 manual and you will see that the KRC2 uses 8R only
as an analog input.

The KeyOut signal timing is equivalent to the K2 8R signal.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: CW passband tuning

2008-01-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Tom,

The K2 always uses the FL1 BFO for transmitting, so that must be set
properly for transmit (do not shift that one - for SSB, visually center
that passband between 300 and 2600 Hz on Spectrogram (assuming you have
the 2.4 kHz SSB filter width).

I have found that SSB intelligibility degrades significantly if the low
frequency corner of the passband is set higher than 300 Hz. I typically
align the SSB filters FL2 thru FL4 to progressively more narrow widths
than the FL1 (OP1) filter. Each filter 200 to 300 Hz more narrow than
the previous one. Set the low frequency corner of each filter at 300 Hz
and try it.
By aligning the SSB filters this way, you can tap XFIL to reduce any
QRM/QRN you hear at a high audio frequency and the desired signal will
still be intelligible. If you attempt to cut the low frequency end
significantly, the signal quickly become unintelligible.

I emailed N3RD a while ago to let them know. Dave said he had a K3

"generic" cable from my TT DX Doubler to the K3, and that seems to
work well also. It's nice to use inputs all on the back of the K3, so
there are no cables to the front panel. Only issue is that the Mic

[Elecraft] Remoting the K2

2008-01-30 Thread Larry Phipps

One
thing that has (rather late in the day) occurred to me is that I do not have
a static IP address from my ISP. So I could, presumably, look up the
address given and use that, accepting that I shall have to change the
settings every time I reboot the router which is very rarely.

[Elecraft] K3 on 14.2V supply?

2008-01-30 Thread G4ILO

My K2/10 had its own power supply in a matching enclosure. Since it has the
internal battery (which incidentally, at around 8 years old, still seems OK)
I set the voltage to 14.2V to keep it charged up, as recommended by
Elecraft.

Due to the higher current demands of the K3/10, I got a Diamond power
supply. This can cope with running the K2 at the same time, which is good
because I don't have space for two power supplies. The output is variable,
with a detent at 13.8V. I could crank this up to 14.2V as well, to keep the
K2 charged up.

Now 14.2V is within the maximum 15V supply voltage stated in the K3 spec,
but still I thought I should run it by the experts for a view on whether
this voltage would cause any harm to it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter performance

2008-01-30 Thread Joseph M. Durnal
I'm not sure if I would want to use such a setup for working
repeaters. The FM filter is $120, you can buy a Yeasu FT-2800M for
that, and many others for just a little more. Even if you wanted the
FM filter for 10 meter FM anyway, and the transverter for 144 CW/SSB,
it would still be a cumbersome setup for working repeaters.

Just my 2¢

Well in my own defense I've not built a K2 and wasn't on the list back then.
Beyond that the screws in my K1 are countersunk. Bout the only time I set
something on top of the K1 is when the top case gets to resonating a bit
setting something up there tends to kill the rattles. The K3 probably won't
have as big of an issue there being larger and all. I mainly would want
them low profile for aesthetics not so much for stacking stuff on it. Heck
doesn't most stuff have feet anyway?

[Elecraft] K3 demo

2008-01-30 Thread Laurent Ferracci

Hi friends,

We now have 300 K3 on the air, but unfortunately i couldn't find any
good demo of it. What i call a good demo would be a video WITH DIRECT
STEREO SOUND RECORDING of how the K3 performs in hard situations (small
signals, crowded band, direct decoding), that we can hear by ourselves,
including the AFX etc... just like if we had our, in fact !

There's a few video available online. The best i've found are the
japanese ones, but they're rather short, and the sound wasn't recorded
directly so we can't judge it.

Anyone ?

Re: [Elecraft] Hel Headset w/ K3

2008-01-30 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Not sure if you order from Heil if you get an adapter with it, but the
Elecraft ProSet-K2 comes with an adapter to go in front Mic connector and it
has a 1/4" jack for PTT.

Note also that the Elecraft ProSet-K2 has an Electret mic (it's effectively
the Proset iC), whereas the Prosets from Heil have HC4 or HC5 elements.

Heil sell a foot switch and a hand switch - I have both and wasn't sure
which I preferred.
You could make one too if you wished.
There is also a PTT RCA connector on the rear panel, so you don't need to
use the front Mic connector.

BUT, I now have the Proset connected to the rear 3.5mm jacks for Phones and
Mic and use VOX, which is so good on the K3, no discernable delay in the
VOX.

I will probably keep the PTT etc. when I run JOTA, I need to keep control of
the PTT, so using a Heil HM-10 on a boom with a PTT switch works well.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 plastic knurled knobs

2008-01-30 Thread Bob

Doug,

You 'cheated' and looked at their website - I am the proud recipient
of a paper McMaster-Carr catalog - it is now 7 years old and it took 3
years of requests to get it. They do have a lot of good hardware
stuff and provide great service.

[Elecraft] Most significant K3 advantages?

2008-01-30 Thread TF3KX

Now that the K3's are getting on the air in numbers, we are seeing lots of
praise and fine reviews. It would be interesting to hear from individual K3
users what they see as the most significant performance issues or features
of this rig, as compared to other rigs they have owned.

Perhaps something like the top 3 (or whatever number) advantages / features.
This would help identifying where this rig really shines.

[Elecraft] K3: ERR TXG

2008-01-30 Thread David Pratt
Many thanks to all who replied to my query about the ERR TXG error
message when calibrating on 60 metres.

My K3 s/n 00168 was labelled as being for the US bands. Perhaps it is
correct to assume that 60 metres was aligned for 5332 to 5405 kHz. In
the UK our 5MHz channels are from 5260 to 5405 kHz.

Perhaps when the Service Manual is published, we shall know which of the
trimmers need a slight twiddle ;-)

RE: [Elecraft] K3 filter performance

2008-01-30 Thread pa5mw
This "which filters do I need" questions are getting out of hand.

We are dealing with a pro Formual 1 car here.

Problem is that often we *are not* F1 technicians, nor do we own a 'suitable
racetrack' or have the driving qualities and lasting experience.

Stop the nonsense discussions.
SSB; the 2.7 Khz is perfect **
CW; go for the 400Hz and if weaksignal/extreme contesting is required; the
200Hz 5pole

That is all you need.
Stop discussing at this point. Get on the band for crying out loud!

Note: my Orion has a perfect 4 pole 600Hz filter which performs perfect. Now do
I think about a 10-pole 200Hz ??

Start the discussion again in 6months or so, when true live experience over a
longer period of time is available.

'73 Mark, PA5MW
** tested K3 extensively during VHF weaksignal, and 160m CW contesting from
december 2007 till last weekend.
*** compared K3 to Orion; like both, but they are different.
