RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-26 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire

I'd like to add to the list of big mistakes:

Learning to translate dits and dahs into letters and other characters.
  Slow code encourages translation!
...

Rich
NU6T

---

Is that a mistake for most Hams?

It wasn't for me.

I am aware of many ops who want to QRQ at 30 wpm, 40 wpm and up. I have no
argument with them when they say that they must learn to hear words, not
characters. That certainly sounds plausible, as does the idea of learning
code as words from the very beginning.

Such extreme QRQ is surely an interesting challenge for those who pursue it,
but it's certainly not "mainstream" in Amateur CW operations from my
experience on the bands. (Sometimes contest exchanges approach those speeds,
but that's a different story. Every contact is very brief and predictable.)

Learning to copy individual characters at very slow speed sure did not
bother me. After over 50 years "pounding brass" my fastest comfortable
copying speed is about 35 wpm. I can copy 40 but it wears me out pretty
quickly. I don't try to send faster than 30 WPM but then I use a mechanical
key, either a hand pump for QRS or a bug for QRQ.

Across the range from less that 5 wpm up, I copy code "in my head"
visualizing a string of letters scrolling by in my head as I hear it sent.
It's kind of funny when I hear an odd fist on the air - someone who drags
out their dashes way too long and then uses very short dits, or who varies
their inter-character spaces a lot (like that link to maritime spark
transmissions I sent earlier). At first such code is gibberish. I "see"
nothing. Then, usually, after listening for a bit, suddenly my brain "locks
on" and the letters start scrolling by in my head. Then it's fine copy. It's
kinda of fun to sit back, let the code flow into my hearing and have that
suddenly happen.

I made transition to "head copy" slowly from copying letter-by-letter on
paper, as we used to do to pass our FCC tests and when receiving messages.

For me, the ability to send and receive very slow CW is an important skill;
one I use far more than sending or receiving over 30 WPM. As more and more
Hams explore the CW bands, I find it very common to run into operators
running at 10 WPM or even less. I want to reply to them at whatever speed
they are sending, as long as it's within my range.

Re:[Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems

2008-04-26 Thread Gary Hembree
This is a known problem with the Rev B front panel artwork. I had the exact
same problem with a MH2 mike when I first used my K3/100 SN 729 a week ago on 6
meters to contact a local friend who is a well-known VHF and HF DXer and
contester. Unfortunately it did not make a good impression! There is a ground
trace missing from one end of C98 and C97 on the front panel board. These
capacitors are associated with the mike bias circuit. Hence the problem with
the MH2. I am told that an official Elecraft fix is going to be released this
coming week. Several of us who noticed this problem were given the fix to try
and it worked three out of three times. If you must use a mike that needs bias
then use the rear panel connector for now (i.e. Elecraft or Icom Proset). MH2s
are excluded of course, unless you have an appropriate adapter. 688 is the
earliest SN that we know is affected. The other three were 690, 728 and 729.
Elecraft is fixing front panel boards now before they ship anymore.

I find the array of national flags amusing, since he won't accept a non-US

Investing in futures is a way to make or lose a lot of money.
But I have to say, K3's look like a good investment to me, unless, of
course, the price drops with volume production.

And note that built K2's sell for less than the kits. It's a
different situation, home built vs factory, but still

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)

2008-04-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
They are likely related - the VFO is not at the correct frequency - so
resolve that first before attempting a TUNE or transmit again.

Your problem is likely a bad solder connection - open the schematic
diagram to RF Board sheet 1 and check each component shown in the top
section of that page. Check both for correct value, component
orientation, and good soldering.

Since it once worked OK, I would wager you will find a bad solder somewhere.

No more depending upon some others subjective opinion of your keying and

[Elecraft] Max power of K3/10 on PSK31?

2008-04-26 Thread G4ILO

What is the maximum power it is OK to run using a K3/10 on PSK31?

I used to run the K2 at 5W max on data because it got pretty warm after a
few minutes even at that power. But at this point in the sunspot cycle (and
particularly on 80m in the evenings) I'm finding that 5W is a bit of a
struggle. I know the K3/100 is specced at key-down for 10 minutes at full
power, but I'd like to know whether the K3/10 is OK at 10W or even 12W for
continuous duty modes.

>>Those people who have ordered a K3 have anxiously

I have my personal K3 #272. ;-)

I placed a second order many months ago, before I had
even received my own unit - specifically for local
distribution and this auction. That's the confidence I
have in the guys.

Any talk of a premium is premature, I'm asking exactly
what I paid for the unit allowing for Califonia sales
tax, shipping, and auction fees.

I'd like to see someone that is coming to the USA for
Dayton to take it home with their luggage, rather than
placing an order there and then waiting for build,
ship, and customs. That may be worth the price
difference between a K3 kit and the built unit.

Cheers,
Don

Re: [Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems

2008-04-26 Thread Don Ehrlich
Sure sounds like RF getting into the mic circuit but to prove it check to
see if the 'feedback' distortion occurs on 160 meters where, normally, RF is
far less intrusive and/or with reduced power output. I use my MH2 with my
K3 with Mic Sel set to ' FP.L bias ' because I found that the FP.H
setting was providing too much gain in the mic amplifier which caused
distortion but that was detectable in the monitor with no RF output.

BE SURE TO CHECK TO BE SURE THE SHELL OF THE MIC CONNECTOR is actually
grounded. There was a thread recently where some folks were getting RF
problems due to excessive paint in the hole which mounted the mic connector
which caused an open ground to the shell of the connector. Now that I think
about it that sounds like the likliest cause.

Don K7FJ

The clincher is that if I transmit into a dummy load, the MH2 works fine.
Got to be RF feedback, right? Why would it effect the MH2 and not my
Kenwood mic?

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] K3 Crossband Split: low output

2008-04-26 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi,

tonight I wanted to operate crossband split: listen on 12 MHz and transmit
on 14 Mhz.

When I tried this, I saw that my output was less than half of the output when
the transmitter is switched to simplex.
Sometimes I also get "end" display (out of band) although the transmitter
was set to 14 Mhz. I could not yet find out what made this happen, when I
recalled the pair of frequencies from memory, it resolved resolved.

Looks like a firmware bug.

[Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems

2008-04-26 Thread Randy Moore
I've just completed assembly of K3 #688 for a friend. Building it was a
joy, aside from a couple of little screw-ups of mine, and having to
compress some turns on one torroid. The support guys are OUTSTANDING at
answering questions and providing solutions!!! But they are off for the
weekend, so I'm here asking for some help.

I have hooked up my trusty Kenwood mic that I use occasionally with my
K2 and it works fine from the K3 front panel connector. My friend
bought the R-MH2 mic, so I thought I'd set it up, but I am having no
luck. Its like I'm getting RF feedback somehow. I've got the menu
entry MIC SEL set to FP.H BIAS, and the MIC gain setting set to 10 and
CMP set to 0. While in TEST mode (no RF), the ALC bumps up to about 5
bars and my voice sounds more-or-less normal (I'm not used to listening
to it) over the MON function. When I go out of TEST at 50w, my voice
sounds very distorted and the power output indication on the K3 display
doesn't follow my voice but seems to either go high (50w) or very low.
Again, all of the above works just fine with my Kenwood mic.

The clincher is that if I transmit into a dummy load, the MH2 works
fine. Got to be RF feedback, right? Why would it effect the MH2 and
not my Kenwood mic?

Any suggestions?

"Look for my other factory sealed Elecraft K3 items in future auctions."

Making a profit on the high demand and low supply is my guess.

Have you checked RTTY in N1MM Logger?

To receive digital audio you need the cable going from the
"Soundcard In" jack of microKEYER to the "mic in" jack on
the computer. The "soundcard "mic" jack routes the microphone
through the soundcard for DVK operation.

You won't since you're not getting Line Out audio to the
computer. Connect the computer "mic in" to the "Soundcard In"
jack on the microKEYER.

You're probably using FSK D instead of AFSK A or DATA A. DM780
does not support FSK.

With respect, I don't think it's "off-topic":

The list moderator, Eric, as repeatedly said that anything to do with
getting on the air and operating on the Ham bands is *on topic* for this
list. Especially if it's something one might do with an Elecraft product, it
has always been welcome. That has certainly been the case over the eight
years I've followed the discussions here.

Some topics take on a life of their own and start going "around in circles",
and in those cases Eric will, eventually, call a halt to it. And he's quick
to step on posts that seem impolite or which criticize others, which I
greatly appreciate.

I agree with you, Brian; such discussions can be "WAY useful too" which I
why I read them, sometimes participate in them, and always appreciate that
they are welcome here.

Hello Everyone,

Recently I purchased two of the LED CW Indicator kits through the Eastern PA
QRP Club. I THINK - - but now I'm not sure - - that the kit is designed to
install in either/both my K2 and in my KX1 rigs.

In looking over the kit and my KX1, I can't see which button the LED
installs in, or if it's intended to be situated elsewhere. Is the idea is
to pick one of the three buttons and drill it? The K2 is no problem as I
received a drilled new button for it, but the KX1 has me guessing. Tom
Hammond's website has a couple of photos of the completed indicator in place
just prior to buttoning up the KX1, but nowhere is the finished installation
shown that I can see.

Maybe I misunderstood the intent of the kit. If it is designed to be used
in the KX1, can anyone steer me to where the indicator LED installs? Does
it peek out of a newly drilled chassis hole someplace? If so, where?

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Thanks es 73...

You are correct that the K3 power meter reads OK on a pure tone, and the
output is limited to the value set by the power control. What is surprising
is that it can read much higher when transmitting actual modulated signal,
and you can vary this level by varying the audio input level. Perhaps is
displaying PEP rather than average power. But I would have expected that if
I set the power control to 5W the K3 meter would continue to show 5W
whatever the input signal, when in fact it can show a lot more.

If I first set the input level using a pure tone and increase the drive
until I get just 5W then when I send a modulated signal the external power
meter hovers around 2.5-3W, which is as you would expect, but the K3 meter
is still showing about 5W. And the K3 meter reading can be increased still
further by increasing the drive level, which is not as I would expect. It is
as if the ALC is not working to limit the power. I know it won't help the
linearity but that is beside the point in this context. If you set the power
control to 5W you don't expect to see the meter showing 10W.

RE: [Elecraft] K3/Mac OSX firmware download seems stuck

2008-04-26 Thread Dick Dievendorff
It appears that the K3 Utility is not communicating with the K3.

Try the Ports tab, "Test Communications" and you should get an informational
screen indicating that the K3 Utility is communicating with the K3 at the
same baud rate as you see when you examine the K3's CONFIG:RS-232 menu
setting. The warning screen may indicate that the device your USB to Serial
port adapter is connected to is just echoing whatever it sees, and that
probably isn't a K3 with operational firmware in it.

Check any port address choices you have to verify that the USB to Serial
adapter port address is right. If you can't get through "test
communications", you won't be able to load firmware.

I'll copy David Fleming, the author of the Mac K3 Utility, on this note.

That's as far as it will go after pressing "Send All New Firmware to

I'm using the KUSB adapter between my Mac (with current OSX) and the
K3. K3 is turned on. I don't see any clues in any instructions about
anything else I'm supposed to do.

It's Saturday, so the factory isn't open.

[Elecraft] K3/Mac OSX firmware download seems stuck

2008-04-26 Thread KM5Q

PS. Now I think it DID work!

After my attempt, I checked the Config menu. Ity says uC 1.78 / FW REV 5

The Utility says 1.78 IS the current MCU version.

So I think it worked, but the "waiting" statement is misleading and
the Utility gave me no confirmation of success.

Comments from OSX users welcome.

2008-04-26 Thread KM5Q
My K3 (just received) came with a note that said to download the
latest firmware before using it.

Config menu says uC 1.78 / FW REV 5

I got through most of the process, but it won't finish. Here is the
report from the K3 Utility:

08:47:53 K3 boot loader is ready for MCU firmware load. RS232 38400 bps.

That's as far as it will go after pressing "Send All New Firmware to
K3".

I'm using the KUSB adapter between my Mac (with current OSX) and the
K3. K3 is turned on. I don't see any clues in any instructions about
anything else I'm supposed to do.

It's Saturday, so the factory isn't open.

Stuffing a K3 with EVERYTHING(!) including 10 top-of-the-line roofing

Or about $2,000 less than one IC-7700
Both of which are way beyond my budget...

Following up on the above slightly old message...

I went through pricing of a K3 myself a while ago. A base machine was going to
run me a little over $2,000 but when I added all the "nice to have" features I
wound up at around $4,000. This is also more than I am able/willing to spend
on a radio at the moment. If it turns out that the general coverage receive
option makes it a very good shortwave radio, I would consider selling one or
two of my shortwave radios with a K3 that I can also use for ham radio.

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2008-04-26 Thread STEPHEN W BANKS
Hello Everyone,

Recently I purchased two of the LED CW Indicator kits through the Eastern PA
QRP Club. I THINK - - but now I'm not sure - - that the kit is designed to
install in either/both my K2 and in my KX1 rigs.

In looking over the kit and my KX1, I can't see which button the LED installs
in, or if it's intended to be situated elsewhere. Is the idea is to pick one
of the three buttons and drill it? The K2 is no problem as I received a
drilled new button for it, but the KX1 has me guessing. Tom Hammond's website
has a couple of photos of the completed indicator in place just prior to
buttoning up the KX1, but nowhere is the finished installation shown that I can
see.

Maybe I misunderstood the intent of the kit. If it is designed to be used in
the KX1, can anyone steer me to where the indicator LED installs? Does it peek
out of a newly drilled chassis hole someplace? If so, where?

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Thanks es 73...

[Elecraft] KRX3

2008-04-26 Thread Howard Klein
Subject: [Elecraft] RE: Preview of coming attractions. To:
elecraft@mailman.qth.net Wouldn't the KRX3 be considered a "coming
attraction"? No word on its status as of today, the 25th, and the projected
"shiping" date. Was this just a carrot being dangled in front of those who have
waited almost a year? I would hope not, but. I believe the KRX3 was being
offered along with the K3 last year at about this time.yes? Patience is one
thing, but when it's the same old thing over and over it becomes frustrating.
At the very least we should have seen an update today. I for one would prefer
to wait and have a more perfect product. Considering the length of time I plan
on using the K3, a few days or weeks longer or even months would be time well
spent.

Yes, a good idea. I used that many times with new ops. Another thing that
helps them get over the on-air jitters is having an experienced op sitting
somewhere else in the room reading the mail. Then they can relax and ask the
occasional, what did he say? question to the other op in the room, it lets
them relax and enjoy the QSO. It isn't long and they won't need the crutch.

Yes. Character spacing needs to be right for proper sent CW. So set the keyer
spacing and timing for the speed in question. Still, think about a hand key.

I have used the Farnsworth method in teaching CW before, and it is faster as
far as getting to the speed you used to need to get a ticket and get the CW
testing done with. But if you really understand CW, the plateaus that all of
us who learned the old fashioned way had to go through were just learning the
language of CW at the different speeds. If you learned it right it was about
the sound of the character, the rhythm of it, and not anything else. That
changes as the speed changes. So anyone learning via Farnsworth spacing,
can't necessarily slow down and operate anywhere in between with out going
through the learning experience eventually. It's easier I think after you
know CW faster. But you really don't know 20 wpm CW if you space it down to 8
wpm via Farnsworth.

As for me, it's choppy and disconnected. I don't like to listen to it. I'll
QSO an op like that, but I won't enjoy it as much as properly spaced CW. Even
slow, properly spaced CW just flows along.

> As soon as they can send/copy 5WPM I plan to push them to actually get
> on-the-air to have some CW QSOs. I want to be sure I am giving them
> good advice.

Yes, that's the best. For me and those I've taught, I don't recommend using a
keyer until the speed is over about 15 wpm, with real spacing. Part of the
whole experience is knowing how to send by hand, and at slower speeds that
just works best and is less nerve wracking with a hand key. There are a lot
less mistakes in sending that way too. And it helps avoid sending too fast,
faster than you can receive. Having to learn a keyer and making tons of
sending mistakes is just something else a new CW op doesn't need to worry
about.

Get them on the air and start having nice slow QSOs with properly spaced CW
and the speed will go up on it's own. You give me a CQ from a slow sender
using a hand key, and he'll get an answer from me every time. No matter how
long it takes to complete the QSO.

[Elecraft] K3 - That sacred date

2008-04-26 Thread jpk5lad
While reading through the daily archive collection, a
funny thought occurred to me.
It looks like everyone who has ordered and is waiting
for their new K3 can tell you the exact date they
ordered their transceiver, perhaps some to the the
very hour. I wondered if you asked them their
wedding anniversary, if they could respond as
quickly with that date? Maybe so, it just seemed that
the date it was ordered is burned into their skull.

I'm not being critical, I ordered mine on January 4 at
about 4:15 in the afternoon and I'm in the same boat
as everybody else who is anxiously awaiting. It's
getting closer.

[Elecraft] "Professional" Morse (WAS: CW Mistakes)

2008-04-26 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Along the idea of this thread (and Frank, it's all good advice but the only
IMPORTANT advice is to get on the air, no matter how shaky, not matter how
much you stumble, and start having fun!) I ran across something that
reminded me of the frequent discussions about 'good' CW here.

Commercial stations are often held up as some example to strive for in
sending crisp code anyone can read.

IMX, a good operator - especially a commercial operator - is one who can
read any darn fist that ever hammered at a key, no matter how bad.

For those of you who are interested and who can do a 11 mbyte download,
click on the link below and listen to the CW sent here by professional
operators. It's all commercial stuff from the heyday of Morse, if not CW,
because most of it is not CW but spark. Good old quenched spark
transmissions from ships to shore and ship to ship from the 1920's. Simple
stuff. Traffic lists (lists of calls, etc.) and some messages/news, but I
wonder how many of today's operators can copy those fists or even tell the
dits from the dahs.

And there's a sample of what the 600 meter marine band sounded like on a
typical receiver of the time. Talk about QRM, but it wasn't a serious
problem for those ops most of the time.

It's a audio file created by W5JN of the OOTC (the really OLD, old timer's
club).

[Elecraft] Another CW question (was: CW Mistakes)

2008-04-26 Thread Brian Lloyd
To be very honest, I have not used CW much. I used it a bit when I got
my first tech ticket in 1976 but not much since then. Now I find
myself teaching it to my students. I am finding this discussion on CW
mistakes to be WAY off-topic for this list but WAY useful too.

I do have the ARRL operating manual and I am using that to start to
guide the kids through proper procedures. On voice they have cue cards
with pieces of the QSO they can use; i.e. how to call CQ, how to
answer a call, how to give a signal report, how to "brag" the station,
how to clear, etc.; and that has helped them a lot. I bet that cue
cards for a CW QSO would be really helpful to noobs as well. Put the
most-used abbreviations and Q-sigs on there for reference.

My question concerns the use of Farnsworth sending on-the-air, i.e.
sending the letters at a much faster speed than the overall rate and
then inserting greater spacing between letters and words. Is that an
OK-practice for working new CW ops or should I have the kids slow down
the keyer so that all intra-element, intra-word, and inter-word
spacing is proper?

As soon as they can send/copy 5WPM I plan to push them to actually get
on-the-air to have some CW QSOs. I want to be sure I am giving them
good advice.

Cicling again to FL1 the receiver return to life.
To make the FL2 - FL3 - FL4 work I have to give a little shock to the radio.
I have already cheched a a big quantity of solder joint without success ...
maybe a Xtal shortned to ground ?
Any idea ??

Re: [Elecraft] K3 #656 alive

2008-04-26 Thread Don Wilhelm

Werner,

The bandwidth displayed is the audio bandwidth. A double sideband (AM)
signal with an RF or IF bandwidth of 6 kHz will contain only 3 kHz of
audio bandwidth. That is an inherent characteristic of the modulation
method, not any limitation imposed by the K3.

To obtain 6 kHz audio bandwidth for an AM signal requires a 12 kHz IF
filter - the FM filter will do that, but the firmware to support it has
not been released yet - I believe it is coming soon.

OTOH, an SSB signal can contain an audio bandwidth equal to the IF
bandwidth.

[Elecraft] K3 #656 alive

2008-04-26 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi all,

I am glad to tell you that I finished building my K3. I admire the work of all
who made this great piece of engineering possible. Building was easy and
quick, after building a K2+KAT100+KPA100 it was more like playing with
Lego.
(my 10 years old son had fun helping me sorting and unpacking parts, fitting
pieces together and looking for nuts and washers on the ground)
No part was missing.

There are some questions left. The first one:
I have a FM Filter, AM Filter, 2.7 Filter, 2.1 Filter and 500 Hz Filter.
I could find a Frequency offset on the 2.7 and 500 hz Filter but not on the
others. Does this mean there is no offset?

Next question: when I am in AM mode, the bandwidth shows 3.00 with FL2
enabled. With LSB it shows 6.00. btw, it sound great!

I tried using MixW and PSK31 (DATA A mode on K3) just now and at first
saw somewhat you describe, however, when I reduced the Line In gain (MIC
control on front panel) I easily controlled the power out. With 5 watts
commanded on the K3 power control, Tune mode in MixW and a line gain of
about 18, 5 watts displays on the K3 and the external power meter. Now
when I click on the CQ button in MixW (F2), the K3 display still shows
about 5 watts and the external power meter shows a fluctuating power out
of 2.5 - 5 watts as the PSK signal is sent. I don't see a problem with
the power out display at all on my K3.

It seems to me that a true "expert" is able to operate effectively at both
low and high speeds, with both experienced and inexperienced operators at the
other end.

So if someone won't/can't QRS for a beginner, it says more about that
person's skills than it does about the beginner.

[Elecraft] K3/10 Power Meter Anomaly in data mode

2008-04-26 Thread G4ILO

I haven't done any data modes operating recently so I have only just noticed
an apparent anomaly in the K3 power output display that presumably has
occurred since the last firmware update. The meter reading on the K3/10
shows nearly full scale when 5W is selected on the power control. An
external power meter shows the correct power is being radiated, so it is
definitely an issue with the meter display, which does show the correct
reading on key down in CW mode, or when tuning.

Has anyone else noticed this? Only my magnetic loop control unit has a power
meter that is permanently in circuit when operating so for other antennas I
do rely on the K3 power meter to confirm that I am running the correct
amount of power output.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Unlocking Tx limits

I would have thought that the real issue with working out of band is
that you become responsible for spectral purity compliance, so you need
instrumentation that can actually measure spurious outputs, whereas,
when operating in band, the system is certified not to violate such limits.

[Elecraft] K3 Power setting in transverter mode

2008-04-26 Thread Ron Meiring
The power setting in transverter mode drives me nuts.
I set it up corectly, change band, come back to the transverter band.
Result. I have to set it up again.
Not only that, but every time I forget, it trips my amp.
I'm planning to build one of these fet PA's with an BLF369 (500-600W)
on 2m. But the K3 will kill it with this software :-(
Elecraft please HELP.

Re: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-26 Thread GW0ETF

Just one thing I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned:-

...Try to avoid the temptation of sending from a pre-written sheet of words;
that way you send from your head just like speaking normally and inter-word
spaces appear naturally. Sending from a sheet of words will probably cause
you send everything in one long string with no gaps - and that, even after
many years of cw still gives me loads of problems copying.

Some have said listen to a few cw contacts on air to get the hang of things
- I would say listen to loads, and loads and loads of contacts and you will
learn lots. I still listen after 20+ years to improve my reading etc, you
should never stop.

.and no-one never makes mistakes..

[Elecraft] Portable CW paddles for K2?

2008-04-26 Thread Dave G4AON

Kristinn

For several years I have used the Palm Mini Paddles while portable, they
are a little "soft" but have the huge advantage of sliding into the
aluminium housing for protection while travelling. At home I use a
Schurr Profi-2 paddle and find the Palm just as nice to use. If you want
to key a rig which lacks the nice internal keyers found in Elecraft
rigs, the Palm Code Cube is good if a little expensive.

The Palm products are available in Europe from http://www.qrpproject.de/
or http://www.wsplc.com/

My K2 #6425 is now up and running, and I need good, light/small portable
iambic paddles for the upcoming summer trips. Are there any good
recommendations?

Candidates I have been looking at include:
- Palm Mini Paddles (http://www.morsex.com/palm)
- Paddlette PK1 (http://www.paddlette.com/pkproduct.htm)
- Paddlette BP (http://www.paddlette.com/bpproduct.htm)

Does anyone have experience, or even comparison on these or others that
would be suitable for portable operation? My preference for "feel" is that
the I prefer "harder/metallic" touch when making contact over "softer"
touch, that I have found with some paddles.

Re: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-26 Thread David Pratt

In a recent message, Frank MacDonell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote ...

beginning CW Operators. Thanks

The biggest mistake, Frank, is not going on the air and having QSOs on
the key. Once you have learnt the code alphabet go on the air and work
someone (maybe a local friend) and practice in that way. Eventually,
your speed build up and you will feel more and more confident. Without
realising it, you will be having contacts at 20wpm.

One of the misconceptions is that you have to get up to speed before
daring to put your CW on the air. One reads so many times about people
"working on their Morse" and continue working on SSB until they get up
to speed. They will fail, and will be "working on their Morse" for many
months (or even years) to come.

Plug in your key, Frank, and have a QSO.
