[Elecraft] Microphone Wiring

2008-10-10 Thread lew
Am using a Super Combo Keyer II by ZS4TX where the audio out from that
box has pins 1 and 6 connected to the output of a 600 ohm 1:1
transformer with pin 1 being decoupled with a 10 microfarad
non-polarized audio capacitor. This looks like pin 1 then is the audio
source and pin 6 is a floating audio ground.
The question is do I use this pin 6 as my ground for pin 7 or 8 for the
K3 mike connector or would any old ground work for pin 7 and/or 8 for
the Elecraft?

  Thanks,
   Lew W7EW/W7AT

[Elecraft] OT - Hakko soldering station recommendion

2008-10-10 Thread Phil Debbie Salas

I'm sure I'll get a number of different recommendations,
but which Hakko soldering station do you like?

Look at the Circuit Speclialist's CSI-STATION1A
(www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/7307). This is the same as the
Hakko soldering station (the manual is also identical). Good price, and the
free gift (I picked the DMM) is also a nice touch. And also look at the SMD
tweezers you can get for it as well.

Do you use Anderson PowerPoles for anything else in the Shack?
If so, try one to see if it's the lead end or the APPs mounted on the
board.

Did you solder the APP to the lead?
Double check the contacts are pushed firmly home.
Any chance you got too much solder on the contacts?

In my experience (all my 12v gear is APP), it takes quite a lot of
'pull' to separate them when they are made correctly.

host [84.234.17.142] blocked using uk.countries.nerd.dk; Your IP is in
uk, rejected based on geographical location

I have had similar issues with my ISP in that my emails were being
blocked as spam. Turns out my ISP itself was being blocked and that
was the issue. If I went to a different ISP with my laptop as in a
wifi location on the road I could email directly to everyone. Point
is I was being blocked at home.

So what I did was get an email account on one of the free web
services and use that for emails to given servers. gmail allows pop
access so I used that and then set it up to leave the mail on the
gmail server for anywhere access and I got it in my email program
in my computer (Pegasus Emailer) and when I'd post it was from gmail
itself.

I used to have a free account with postmaster.co.uk for my UK visits
and those emails were originated in the UK. The ISP you sent from is
in Westminister so perhaps the whole of Westminister or the whole of
the UK was blocked. Go to google.com instead of google.co.uk and send
from there see if that helps you avoid the geographic blocking.

Fortunately my ISP got the issue straightened out and the ISP block
is lifted but I found if I forward emails from my laptop to my
desktop I will get blocked as a spammer, They keep track of all the
forwards that are sent and this was their way to assure they do not
have spammers as clients. Very Draconian.

Morning, Don.
I had the same problem.
I had not installed the clips properly in the connector. By this, I mean
that I had not pushed the metal clips far enuff forward for them to snap
into a locked position. Because of this, they would cause the connector to
disengage with the slightest movement of the radio.

Look at the assy manual very carefully with the connector in hand.
I believe you'll see this is your problem.

Good luck.

Same here - just by brushing up against the cable I often lose
connection. Been a problem recently as I was interconnecting the K3
with the rest of the station. I think I will make a new cable

PowerPoles are great for quick connect/disconnect, but in a radio
that just sits on the table month after month a more secure connector
might be a better choice.

[Elecraft] K3 Channel hopping mode

2008-10-10 Thread Graham Kimbell (G3TCT)
I found Wayne's explanation on how to set up channels so you can instantly
hop between them useful as I want to use this feature on vhf.

I agree with Joe's comment below and also when he says When in 'channel
hopping' mode, it might be nice to momentarily display the memory number and
text label for a few seconds in the VFO B area when changing channels.

However my main issue is how to revert back to normal VFO operation (to tune up
and down from the channel frequency) once you've selected a channel? If you
set up a channel with VFO A=f1 and VFO B=f2, pressing A/B switches the rx to f2
as expected. But rotating VFO A control switches to the next channel hopping
frequency which is rather unexpected.

I've been trying to think of a way round this. What I think I would like is
either (a) having swapped A/B as above, VFO A reverts to normal operation; or
(b) for VFO B control to be the channel control and VFO A to tune normally up
and down from the channel.

Comments appreciated.

Sorry, forgot to mention this in my previous post.

It would also be nice if the VFO A rate were reduced in channel
hopping mode. With the default setup, it seems like a single encoder
count corresponds to one channel, which means the slightest touch of
the VFO A knob changes channels.

Re: [Elecraft] big problem

2008-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
What Dick mentioned is entirely true in my experience, but I might add
that the condition should be corrected promptly. The fact that the
connector is loose also says that there is a marginal electrical contact
that is prone to arcing and heating, and in the extreme could cause a
fire to develop. For your own safety as well as the health of your K3,
correct it promptly.

[Elecraft] K3 Noise blanker

2008-10-10 Thread Gary Smith
Another question for K3 owners:

I have a severe case of RFI which is intermittent and I wrote about
it in a post to the RFI forum. You can hear an example of it here if
you wish, it's less than a meg in size:http://doctorgary.net/QRM-
1.mp3 Not to go into much detail on the specific RFI here but to
understand the character of the issue, read my detailed post on the
rfi reflector and go here:
http://lists.contesting.com/pipermail/rfi/2008-October/006238.html

I have a Corsair II whose noise blanked usually does a fair job of
eliminating this RFI. My Omni V does nothing to reduce this RFI. It
usually happens at night. As I am more into low band DXing, this is
an issue.

My question for this forum is to ask how satisfied you are with the
noise reduction in the K3 as opposed to your experiences with other
recievers with similar RFI as I am experiencing.

I have not to date found the source of the RFI so perhaps a better
noise blanker is what I will find that is my best option. The K3
seems to be getting a lot of great press so I am interested in the
K3. A superior noise blanker is imperitave but I would not be willing
to have a radio that hears less well than the Corsair II or Omni V.

I have a few other K3 questions but will ask them in separate posts.

Thank you,

Gary

RE:[Elecraft] Big problem

2008-10-10 Thread W2XB

Hello gents,
Thanks to all that answered my call for help. Fixed the problem. After
reading all the e-mails, I checked the connector pins. I used the wrong
ones. When I made up a new cable. I have two size pins . I used the one for
the large gauge wire. And it didn't make the right connection. Changed the
pins and all is well.
Thanks a lot for all the time and help.

[Elecraft] section II alignment pll problems

2008-10-10 Thread kf4pob
I have tried all tests and checks offered up by you good folks but none of them
have cured my problem. I have even gone to a local ham buddy that has built one
and we both could not find the cure. I have verified that all the parts are
correct and in the right place. I have re-soldered all joints, those looking
questionable or not. I also verified that the 12597.91 frequency displayed is
in fact accurate.all voltages are correct, L31 is correct and capacitors c84
c85 are correct. When checking the cathode voltages on d16 d17 the voltage
did come and go when hitting the band- and band + buttons. I noticed the
voltage came and went on BOTH of the diodes simultaneously. Male?logic?kicked
in and said is that right? If the two diodes are used to vary the frequencies
to the display shouldn't they be activated one at a time, one with band+ and
one with band-?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Gary,

It sounds like you need the power company more than an NB. I had
noise just like that, intermittent. I turned out to be a transformer
on a power pole. It could be arcing due to a faulty power line
connection. You need to have the power company open the line at a
fuse point, removing power from the line. You will need to run your
radio off batteries while they are checking. I found that most power
companies will work with their customers to resolve a problem.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] K1: power output gauge

2008-10-10 Thread Elwood C. Downey
Hello all,

I've had K1 S/N 2594 on the air for a few months now and having a blast. Great
transceiver. Thanks elecraft!

But I'm curious about the power output scale. I have Out set to 5 W. I'm on
40m. My antenna SWR is about 1.7:1 at 7.00
and 7.15 MHz and dips smoothly down each way to about 1.2:1 in the middle at
about 7.08. However, the number of power
bars is 5 at each end of the band and 4 in the middle, just opposite of what I
would expect given the SWR profile.
With the DL1 dummy load, it's 5 bars all across the band.

Yes, I read the power output accuracy disclaimer in the manual and I'm not
complaining, just curious about this
behavior. No, I do not have the KAT1 antenna tuner.

Thanks much,

Elwood, WB0OEW, Socorro, NM

Re: [Elecraft] K1: power output gauge

2008-10-10 Thread John Huggins
One experiment to try is to transmit into a dummy load of 75 -100 or so
ohms. The idea is to produce a consistent SWR other than 1:1 to see how
things behave in non-ideal, but consistent circumstances. I am not sure
what you will see, but the results might help with understanding.

[Elecraft] Re: section II alignment pll problems

2008-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dan,

The varactors are changed simultaneously, so the voltage on one should
be the same as the voltage on the other. A low voltage should be
applied when BAND- is tapped and the capacitance will be at a maximum,
then when BAND+ is tapped, the voltage is made high and the varactor
capacitance is at a minimum. In normal operation, the voltage will be
somewhere between those extremes and will change as the K2 is tuned-
that is how the K2 tuning is accomplished - it is a phase locked loop
synthesizer where the PLL reference frequency is varied between each of
the major tuning increments. That feat is accomplished by 'pulling' the
crystal frequency - it is a type of VXO circuit.

Since your frequency of oscillation is considerably higher than what the
crystal frequency should be, I am suspicious about the crystal itself.
It is possible that the crystal manufacturer mis-marked it, so I would
try another one - but still, the frequency should change even though the
entire range would be higher than normal. If the crystal were
completely dead, I guess it is possible for the circuit to oscillate at
some strange frequency, but that is not likely either since you seem to
have a stable frequency. Have you checked the orientation of diode
D18? Although if it were reversed, it might kill all oscillation.

OK, enough rambling and speculation on my part - I suggest that you get
a new PLL crystal from [EMAIL PROTECTED] and install it, then see what
happens. Check the resistance across L31 before ordering the crystal, if
the resistance is quite high, L31 could be open and should be replaced
as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K1: power output gauge

2008-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Elwood,

The K1 (without the KAT1) uses a diode detector to determine the amount
of RF Voltage at the output (just like using an RF Probe). The power is
calculated in the microprocessor with the assumption that the load is 50
ohms resistive.

Of course, your antenna is not likely to be 50 ohms resistive, so the
calculation done by the K1 will be in error by the amount your antenna
differs from that ideal 50 ohms. If your antenna presents an impedance
greater than 50 ohms, the RF voltage will be higher with less power
applied, and your K1 will not develop as much power because it 'thinks'
the power is high enough already. The converse is true if the input
impedance to your feedline is low (the K1 will actually develop more
power than it indicates).

When the load is 50 ohms pure resistive, the K1 power calculation is
really quite accurate.

[Elecraft] K3: Error in KRX3 installation instructions?

2008-10-10 Thread Paul Ferguson
I am in the middle of installing my KRX3 and came to a point where I do not
have enough of the correct screws remaining. I am using KRX3 Installation and
Operation manual Rev B (Aug 20, 2008) and Errata Rev B-2 (Sep 30, 2008).

My inventory matched the manual as modified by the Errata. I might have used
the wrong screws somewhere, so I went back thru the steps keeping track of what
the steps say I should have used.

I came to a problem on page 31, step 2. It calls for two 4-40 3/16 zinc pan
head screws. The inventory does not list any of the above screws. There are
zinc pan head 4-40, 1/4 and black pan head 4-40 3/16 screws. I do not know if
I used zinc 1/4 or black 3/16 during this step. What should this step say?

[Elecraft] K3 built-in 2-tone generator problem (2.7 kHz filter)

2008-10-10 Thread wayne burdick
The K3 provides an internal 2-tone generator for SSB transmit IMD
testing.

We just discovered that it was not working with the 2.7 kHz filter. One
of the tones would in this case be right on the filter's edge,
resulting in very poor tone balance. Also, 2-tone testing was set up to
work only in LSB mode.

Anyone trying to use the 2-tone generator for testing with the 2.7 kHz
filter and/or USB may have quite anomalous results.

Both problems will be corrected in the next beta-test release, likely
to be next week. If you're doing 2-tone testing and would like to try
the latest field-test firmware, which has the corrections, please
e-mail me directly.

[Elecraft] K3: PSK D ASCII mode

2008-10-10 Thread Barry Pfeil
The owners manual (Rev D1) that came with my SN1774 K3 says, on page 31, that
...PSK D lets you transmit via FSK IN, ASCII, or the keyer paddle. I take
this to mean I don't really need a transmit audio connection from the computer
my PSK31 software runs on to the K3. Apparently the transmit data would travel
over the same RS232 interface I've implemented for my contesting software and
the K3 would create the PSK warble internally. Very cool, BUT, everything I
read in the reflector archives talks about audio, not ASCII, interfaces for
transmit on data modes. Is this ASCII feature implemented in the K3? Do the
PSK programs now have such an option implemented? My hands-on PSK experience
is dated and with Digipan only.

The K3 utility that you use to update firmware has a sample

My Elecraft logging program KComm supports the KY command used to send data
via ASCII to the K3 and could be used in PSK D and RTTY D modes but there
are some shortcomings in the K3 implementation so I haven't really tested it
as I don't consider it usable for any serious purpose. There is no way for
the computer to send the equivalent of the IM prosign you can send on the
key to terminate the transmission, so you have to wait for it to time out.
There is no support for newline characters and everythging is sent in lower
case so the output looks odd in PSK31. And there is no way to get the
received data back into the logging program so you have to watch the
scrolling 7 character display on the K3 - if you miss it you've lost it.

2008-10-10 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
I just received the following from Tim, the list administrator at
qth.net, who provides the free list server for the Elecraft list.

In general , it looks like once you are subscribed to the list for 24
hours with a new address, you should automatically be white-listed,
eliminating any global spam blocking of your elecraft list postings.
This type of blocking may occur though in the first 24 hours after a new
address is subscribed.

Also, it is always a requirement that you post to the list from the
-exact- same email address that you subscribed with. Any other will be
blocked as a spam source. (We get hundreds of those attempting to post
every day.) If you wish to use multiple addresses to post, just
subscribe each one and then set your email preferences page to 'no mail
delivery' for those that you will only be sending from.

Eric,

Anyone that is subscribed is white listed within 24 hours of their
subscription. If they try to post with an email address that isn't
subscribed to your list, it won't get posted anyway until you do
something about it.

There is no other way that I know of to deal with this other than to
just let the spam in.

I also have a Hakko 808 desoldering tool, which is very useful when you need
it.

The step should say black, not zinc.

Additional 3/16 screws are supplied with your filters, one per filter.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3: Error in KRX3 installation instructions?

I am in the middle of installing my KRX3 and came to a point where I do not
have enough of the correct screws remaining. I am using KRX3 Installation
and
Operation manual Rev B (Aug 20, 2008) and Errata Rev B-2 (Sep 30, 2008).

My inventory matched the manual as modified by the Errata. I might have used

the wrong screws somewhere, so I went back thru the steps keeping track of
what
the steps say I should have used.

I came to a problem on page 31, step 2. It calls for two 4-40 3/16 zinc pan

head screws. The inventory does not list any of the above screws. There are
zinc pan head 4-40, 1/4 and black pan head 4-40 3/16 screws. I do not know
if
I used zinc 1/4 or black 3/16 during this step. What should this step say?

[Elecraft] Cushcraft cable - what is it? - OT

2008-10-10 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF

Can anyone tell me what this Cushcraft cable is like please?

Written on it (in the sequence it appears) is

Ultralink 93605 Cushcraft / Signals Manchester N.H. E82833 10 AWG 75
C (UL) Type CL2 ... LL82959 (CSA) CXC 60 C FT-4

It has a substansial close brade screen (silver) over a foil wrapper,
then what appears to be a polyester or polama dialectric with a solid
copper core.

I have 15m donated and trying to determine how good this will be for
2M, how lossey or not etc.

I think it might be what I used to call 'ThickNet'?

Apart from the dielectric it looks similar to W103 - Probably also has the same
diameter of centre conductor. Therefore will not fit a standard N type without
modifying either the conductor or the pin. (Been there with W103).

1.5dB at 150MHz, since you mentioned 2m...

I haven't monitored for a while. Is this something that is external to the K3?
Is it a mast mount pre-amp with switching capabilities??  Please clue me in or
