Hello All,

I have several items looking for a new home:

Bencher BY-2 paddles, very lightly used, $80

Elecraft EC-2, unused, $50

Elecraft K2 #3311 with KPA100, KNB2, KAF2, K160X, KSB2, cables and documents.
Physically good shape. Never had it on SSB, updated to the latest rev both
firmware and hardware $975

Heathkit HR-10, not working, filaments light, case is in good shape, the
interior could use a cleaning. My best guess is that there is a bad tube in the
HV chain. $50

All prices include CONUS shipping. I can send pictures tonight. I will ship
internationally, but we'll need to check on costs/methods. Check or Money Order.

[Elecraft] K3: Keypad Band Switching - a simple request

2008-11-07 Thread TomB W1PKX

The latest firmware providing keypad band switching is much welcomed.

In concert with this, I would like to request Elecraft consider adding a
CONFIG menu switch to protect memory entries from inadvertant overwriting.
This would effectively disable the V M button while active. More than once
I've mistakenly hit V M when I intended to recall a memory.

Thanks

I've had my K2 (5705) for a couple of years, with the KSB2. Alignment is a

have gotten some complements on the audio, so I think the bad reputation is a

[Elecraft] K3 with N1MM question

2008-11-07 Thread Randy Moore
I enjoyed last weekend operating SSCW with my new K3/10 and N1MM. Both
were a joy to use!! I have one curiosity however. I have the K3 setup
for semi-QSK with a delay of 0.03 which works fine for me at about 25
wpm. However, the keying through N1MM operates as though PTT is enabled
at the beginning of a transmission and disabled at the end. In other
words, I hear no signals during the N1MM transmission. I'm keying
through the RS232 port on the K3 from a standard serial port on my PC
(same cable as used for the CAT from N1MM). I have PTT--KEY set to
OFF-dtr, N1MM set for DTR-CW, RTS-Always off. Is there something I'm

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Question

2008-11-07 Thread Don Wilhelm

Curt,

I do not know which threads you are referring to. The K2 with the KSB2
is quite good with excellent carrier suppression and will provide an
audio passband consistent with the filter width you have installed on
the KSB2 board.
If you have the older 2.1 kHz filter width, the passband placement
becomes critical and may require some experimenting. The 2.4 kHz width
has been provided with the KSB2 for several years now and is not as
critical. The 2.6 kHz bandwidth gives excellent audio with even less
concern for the exact placement of the passband. No matter what filter
width you have installed now, it is a simple matter of changing a few
capacitors to alter the width - Elecraft provides a kit to do that if
you wish.

The downside of the KSB2 is that it has no anti-vox, and that fact makes
the VOX operation 'touchy' for data modes - it is better to use PTT for
data modes, and the KSB2 does have limited microphone gain - it works
very well with electret element mics and with the higher output dynamic
mics, but if you are planning to use the lower output Heil dynamic mics
(HC-4/5 elements), then you may have to add a microphone preamp.

Those are the pros and cons that I know about.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

I had an RF feedback problem when transmitting in digimodes (TX audio via
LINE IN).
On some bands and at power levels above 20W, my TX audio was distorted.
BTW, my previous TRX did not show this problem in the very same setup.

Similar to MIC, also LINE IN has an RFC in its GND line (L5 on the KIO3

After removing it and placing a jumper, my problem was gone!

By any chance do you have Radio PTT via Command checked in the N1MM
Configurer for the K3 serial port? That would cause exactly the symptoms you
observed. Also, in the main Configurer window, make sure that there is only
one check mark under CW/Other (the one beside the K3 Radio port).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

2008-11-07 Thread Paul Christensen
In fact, several return lines are affected by the same condition on the KIO3
PCB, including:

L7 - Mic (J20);
L5 - Line In (J21);
L3- Line Out (J22);
L8 - Phones (J19); and
L15 - Speaker (J18).

On the Main DSP PCB, L4 (affecting the front panel Mic jack) is bypassed
with a jumper and removed.

IMHO, the real solution for the KIO3 is to simply disconnect the existing
ring return point on the jacks through a trace cut and bond the jack's ring
terminal to the chassis with a short jumper. The rings should really be
placed at chassis potential as close as possible to the jacks' ring. The
RFCs could be left in place with this option since they would removed from
the circuit anyway.

An alternative option is to remove/bypass the affected RFCs on KIO3 and
jumper the associated CN1-CN3 chip caps (e.g., jumper pins 4 and 5 on CN2
for rear panel mic shell grounding).

Whatever you decide, it's important to refer to the schematic diagrams prior
to making any K3 modification.

[Elecraft] K3: Keypad Band Switching - a simple request

2008-11-07 Thread Don Rasmussen
Please... nothing else that would make it take longer. !!!

I've been lobbying for a setup option that will remap the single press funtion
of M1 - M4 and REC to select a band position rather than doing the DVK/keyer
memories.

That way it's a single press and no way to overwrite anything.

Before any cries from the gallery - the default setup from the factory would be
the *existing* mapping of those buttons, allowing single press digital voice
keying or cw memory keying.

By overriding -factory configuration- in SETUP, the user would give up the use
of the M1-M4 + REC (maybe they own an external keyer) in favor of using these
buttons as single press band selection buttons.

M1 would map to tunable band memory 1, corresponding for M2, M3, and M4, and
REC would map to band memory 5.

I'd like to see the TAP call up band, HOLD of the same key to perform AB.

This is a mistake that I've made a lot and it's annoying. It's either
because I read Hebrew, which of course goes from right to left, or
because I'm a programmer and automatically think of putting the contents

I've suggested to Wayne that Elecraft change the buttons to read STO and
RCL or something. But in case they don't do this :-) here are some
suggestions:

1) If you make this mistake, immediately hit M V which will cancel it
without doing anything.

2) Notice the AF REC label under V M. REC means 'record'.

3) I did this: cut a small sticker -- I used a piece of a shiny red
bumper sticker -- to fit over the face of the V M key. This has
completely solved the problem -- my brain only sees M V so that's the
one it chooses. But I have V M available immediately if I need it.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

2008-11-07 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

In fact, several return lines are affected by the same
condition on the KIO3 PCB, including:

 L7 - Mic (J20);
 L5 - Line In (J21);
 L3- Line Out (J22);
 L8 - Phones (J19); and
 L15 - Speaker (J18).

The same issue effects the RS-232 return (DB9, pin 5). In this
case, raising the return makes RxD sensitive to RF and results
in increased radiated/coupled digital noise from CAT polling.

IMHO, the real solution for the KIO3 is to simply disconnect
the existing ring return point on the jacks through a trace
cut and bond the jack's ring terminal to the chassis with a
 short jumper.

ANY impedance in a signal circuit that returns to ground inside
the radio will result in placing any noise from the power
supply return (in this case unbypassed RF on the power supply)
in series with the signal input. In particular, the chokes
in the mic circuits result in about 70 mV of RF in series
with the approximately 50 mV from the typical dynamic mic.

 is bypassed
 with a jumper and removed.

 should really be
placed at chassis potential as close as possible to the
 jacks' ring. The
RFCs could be left in place with this option since they would
 removed from
 the circuit anyway.

An alternative option is to remove/bypass the affected RFCs
 on KIO3 and
jumper the associated CN1-CN3 chip caps (e.g., jumper pins 4
 and 5 on CN2
for rear panel mic shell grounding).

Whatever you decide, it's important to refer to the schematic
 diagrams prior
 to making any K3 modification.

Similar to MIC, also LINE IN has an RFC in its GND line (L5 on the

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Question

2008-11-07 Thread Ignacy

I used and did some testing with original KSB2 and QRP mode. The SSB signal
is readable and useful although neither contest nor HiFi quality. While it
does not have RF processing, it has some compression to a degree that
outboard speech processors do not help any more. The narrow signal may be an
advantage if running QRP where readability is more important than fidelity.

I used K2 in my home country, SP, using a 60 ft long wire at 20ft with 2
15ft radials, all directly attached to KAT2. On 80m, I worked many of my
old buddies within a 250 miles radius, and nobody had any trouble copying. A
feat with a 4 lb self contained radio (powered by 2 x 11V/1.5AH LI-Ion
batteries)+ 1 lb bag of accessories.

[Elecraft] PF-RX EQ setting on K3

2008-11-07 Thread Geoff Cottrell G3XGC
For CW reception of weak 160m DX, I recently tried tweaking up the RX EQ
so that the sidetone frequency is enhanced and other frequencies are
attenuated. I think this works quite well as a primitive extra audio

(obviously) for speech. Does anyone know if such a home brew AF filter
CW response curve setting could be stored using say PF1 button, and then
be reset to a flat response using say PF2? Otherwise it gets fiddly and
time-consuming to keep tweaking each of the eight filter frequencies.

confused with what exactly needs to be modified to avoid RF feedback. I would
really like to get inside only once. May be Elecraft can officially issue
recommendations for the mod regarding this RF feedback issue. Hopefully the
one that would require minimum surgery on the radio.

Lyle,

That's right. I should have looked off page on the preceding schematic to
see that -- although the issue still stands on the other stated jacks.
What's odd is that his RFI problem went away with the removal of L5. I
would not have expected that result on the transformer output although one

FW: [Elecraft] K3 + Ameritron AL-811

2008-11-07 Thread Jack Regan

-Original Message-
I received a used 811-H that I had won on eBay Friday night and used on
Saturday in the ARRL-SS-CW. I got the five states I needed for WAS CW with
no problem. With 500 to 600 watts output I got answers to my calls
immediately.

Key out and no alc. Keep the drive down, 50 to 63 watts. I was using two
resonant antennas, 40 and 20 meters so tuning was not an issue.

Now that the contest is over I have been trying to use the amp with my legal
limit MFJ 989D tuner for the non-resonant bands. So far the internal K3 ATU
has easily found 1 to 1 matches for all bands from 80 on up. The MFJ tuner
and amp are having a harder time on 80. Perhaps what I am learning is how
inefficient the matches are on some bands.

Anyway, the amp is great for the price! The only caveat is you have to
manually switch antennas and bands and settings!!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 vs. HPSDR Mercury receiver

2008-11-07 Thread Alan Bloom
One way to get better-sounding audio, both on transmit and receive, is
to use a wider-bandwidth crystal filter and let the DSP do most of the
filtering. Because the digital filter is linear-phase it will sound
much more natural than an analog non-linear-phase filter.

That's why I leave ESSB enabled all the time on transmit, with the
bandwidth set for minimum.

The phase distortion is most pronounced near the corner frequency of the

PSK, at least PSK31, is a very narrow mode and the chang ein delay
(phase) through the filter over such a narrow bandwidth is usually
minor, as long as you don't operate at a corners.

[Elecraft] No On/Off for COMP EQ?

2008-11-07 Thread Barry Pfeil
As far as I can tell, there appears to be no ON/OFF function (button, menu,
etc.) for the compression and equalization on the K3 other than returning the
respective controls to zero settings.  Is that true?.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Switch Tone Volume

2008-11-07 Thread Lyle Johnson
I would like to know how the MONitor level is used to change the switch
tone volume...

Go to CW mode, press the CMP|PWR|MON knob until MON is displayed in VFO
B and adjust the level.

Switch tones will be at that level.

[Elecraft] [K3] CW monitor tone adjustment presents difficulty

2008-11-07 Thread Carl Clawson
I've been using some stereo speakers that require a high volume setting,
which means turning up my sidetone a lot higher than I would like for
phones. This causes a problem when I switch from one to the other. I start
keying and it's either way too loud or I can barely hear myself sending.

This would be easy to deal with if the monitor adjustment didn't furnish a
constant CW tone that mutes the audio and makes it impossible to change
while using the radio. I'd like to be able to turn that tone off. I could
either judge by the numbers on the display or listen to it as I'm keying,
but the way it is now if I have it wrong I can neither send nor receive
while I'm adjusting it.

Another solution would be a selectable audio gain change when phones are
plugged in, but I'd be happy twiddling knobs as needed.

73 and thanks for listening,
Carl, WS7L
