[Elecraft] K3: Noisy Fans
My fans have always been noisy. I can tell immediately when they come on at the slowest speed with my headphones on. The noise sounds like rough bearings but as they get faster both fans get noisier. They definitely are not whisper quiet by any stretch of the imagination. I just took the top cover off the K3 and there are no wires catching the fan blades. The fan with the noisy bearings is the one on the right next to the antenna sockets. But both fans are noisier the faster they run and they drown out my computer fan. I guess I need to ask Elecraft for replacement fans. Barry Simpson VK2BJ K3 # 1397 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Noisy Fans
double check the fan wires that run between the fan casing and the back panel - it might not be possible to see those from the top and you would need to remove the fans from the back panel. But you might be able to tell by slowly rotating the fan manually, if it was a wire, you might be able to feel/hear it as the blade goes past. You would also be able to feel the bearings if they are that noisy. 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174 -- A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. -Greek proverb On 10 Dec 2008, at 09:33, Barry Simpson wrote: My fans have always been noisy. Great! Please add one more to be able to completely empty an SSB message rather than record something short over it. How about REC select M1 - M4 CLR select same M1 - M4 rig returns to operation. While it does not seem to be documented, someone discovered (wish I could remember who so credit could be given) that putting the im by itself into a memory M1 - M4 on CW would result in emptying that memory - much better than just overwriting it with a dit which does result in a xmitted signal and amp relays tripping when inadvertently pushed in the heat of battle! I have used my K3 with the second receiver installed in CQWW CW as 8Q7DV. Just two requests for the future firmware releases: 1) Would be useful to have two receivers work on different bands. I know it is on the plan but this is so important that I have decided to remind about it again. 2) When I want to hear main receiver in both ears I simply switch sub rx off. What is the use of having a 2nd independent receiver if you cannot use it totally separate from the main receiver? 1. For tuning the same band you are CQing on. During the short listen times between your CQs, you can find unworked stations in other parts of the same band. 2. For diversity reception, running a different antennas into the two receivers. The best way to simultaneously work on another band is to use a second radio. Different band operation with the two K3 receivers is a planned enhancement for the future. [Elecraft] RX audio in both ears for sub receiver
If the K3 has the capability, the best would be to supply both ears both main and sub receiver audio but add a slight delay to the left ear for the sub receiver and and a slight delay to the right ear for the main receiver. This will give the good old stereo effect that the main receiver is on the left and the sub receiver is on the right. I've done this for many years using two radios and audio delay boards meant for repeaters. Since the rig has adjustable AFX already, my guess is it would only take Wayne's magic fingers on the keyboard to add thisalong with the 90 million other things that everyone asks for! 73, Terry ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: Help -- stuck in MCU LD -- SOLVED
Problem solved, sort of. Switched to a Windows XP machine, and was able to get everything to work. Same USB/RS-232 interface (Prolific 2303), but obviously not the same driver. So don't know if it is the USB driver (more likely), or the Mac version of Utility (probably less likely). In any case, it worked fine. I hate to keep one lousy Windows machine around for this sort of thing. Up until this update with 1.1.10.17 version of Utility, the Mac versions of everything have worked swimmingly. [Elecraft] Sub and Main receiver audio
Since the audio of MAIN and SUB was mentioned in the DVR thread, a sperate discussion. The way the audio from MAIN and SUB comes to your ears has been discussed before, but here's one. How about this solution. 1. Suppose the audio is in the balance mode. Sub-pot in the middle (balance): both receivers have same volume, MAIN on left ear, SUB on right When moving the sub pot more to MAIN, then the audio of the SUB in right ear decreases AND is filled up by extra sound of MAIN. So right ear has a mix of SUB and MAIN. This works vice versa of course. In this way, when moving the balance to left, both ears will hear MAIN, and when moving the balance right, both ears will hear SUB. 2. Suppose the audio in in nor mode. Make this nor 1 and nor 2. Both nor1 and nor 2 use the seperate controls as implemented now. special about nor 1: audio of MAIN and SUB completely seperated (this is the way the K3 is working now) special about nor 2: audio of MAIN and SUB are a bit mixed but MAIN is mainly on left and SUB is mainly on right (like it is implemented on a FT1000MP) Donot know if it is easy to implement, but this is how I would like it. 73 Arie PA3A ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [K3] [Elecraft] K3: 1. Loud audio blast on power up 2. Main/SUB balance
Hi, Just loaded F/W 2.72/1.98 with the Send all firmware option (so including data tables). The short audio blast is still there if you are tuned to a signal when switching on the K3. It really hurts your ears as it seems that for this short period the AGC is not yet ON. Any fixes planned for this (change boot order in DSP such that AGC assumes a signal being present until the RX really starts to receive) ?? BTW. The updated action of LINE OUT=NOR now with outputting monitor audio during TX is great. I have the set the CONFIG:SUB AF to BALANCE. When looking to the monitor VU meters on the microKEYER router software it appears that the SUB output is lower than the MAIN output with the balance knob in the 12 o'clock position (after equalizing both main and sub with double tapping AB). This is effect is also audible (~6dB difference). I don't remember exactly when this behavior began, but it seems that it was in the last few beta firmware releases. In every other respect my K3 behaves normally. Obviously, this is no big deal. However, I did try reloading the latest beta version, as suggested on this reflector. I always use Send All Firmware to K3, which reloads the data tables. It didn't help. [Elecraft] DVR from software
In response to the person that just posted about DVR functions from a computer program - From page 14 of the K3 programmers reference manual. SWT/SWH * (Switch Emulation; SET only) K3 Extended SET format (K31): SWTnn; (TAP functions) or SWHnn; (HOLD functions). nn is determined from Table 4. Table 4 says nn of 21 will do the same as taping M1 on the front panel so I believe this should work. If you logging program doesn't support this command, you can assign a funtion key to a macro from the OS to generate this command and pass it to the K3. Hi, 2) When I want to hear main receiver in both ears I simply switch sub rx off. It would be nice to be able to listen to sub rx in both ears as well. Is it possible? Yes this is missing. It would also be good to be able to turn the main RX off at times, especially when using the internal measurement system to check the filter attenuation, i.e. when setting up the amplification factors for the individual filters in the second RX. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The updated action of LINE OUT=NOR now with outputting monitor audio during TX is great. Yes, this should make recording a lot easier, thanks! What I noticed, but didn't investigate, was that there was a DC offset in the SUB audio output. I was using Audacity to record the audio. Using the LINE OUT to a line in on my computer. I noticed that monitoring the sidetone showed close to a zero (if not zero) DC offset for the left channel or the MAIN Rx. The right channel however showed a substantial DC offset. I haven't played with the new Beta yet, nor have I looked closely at the recording. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Help -- stuck in MCU LD -- SOLVED
That may have been the problem, although it has worked without a hitch for several updates. After getting the radio working again with Windows, I reloaded the Prolific drivers on the Mac, and fiddled a bit more. Then everything on the Mac was back to normal, too. Just one of those things. There are a lot of brand names of USB/ Serial converters. Don't know about the Keyspan version, but a large number of these things, regardless of brand, use the same Prolific chip, perhaps with different drivers. Anyway, it's working. I am going to go hunting for a different interface, however, if the problem reoccurs. It's too much hassle to drag out the old Windows PC :) Thanks ... RE: [Elecraft] Some Info Please
Hello Bryan. The K1 requires no more than a basic soldering ability and the willingness to follow step-by-step instructions. As many people have observed about all the Elecraft kits, it's a matter of doing some simple soldering and assembly many times. There's a lot of parts, even in the K1, but if you take the time to follow the assembly procedure, you'll have a first class QRP rig. You can download the K1 manual that contains complete assembly instructions here: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K1_manual_rev_F.pdf and there's an errata sheet for that manual here: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K1_Errata_Rev_F-8.pdf You'll need a few hand tools, a decent ESD-safe soldering iron, and a DMM. A complete list of tools is on page 9. There are a lot number of K1 owners here with extensive experience who will happily help you in case you have questions. Also, you can drop an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for direct tech support should the need arise. Elecraft has the goal of never letting a builder fail to end up with a rig he/she is proud to own and operate. It's all about enjoying Ham radio, and if part of that enjoyment for you is building a nice rig, you can't do better than Elecraft. The 23 in the core designation is the outside diameter, so yes, you have the correct core. The Ferrite cores have no color markings, they are a dull gray. It is the powdered iron cores that are marked with colors. As for tips on winding without scraping the wire enamel - *push* the wire through the core center instead of trying to pull it through. Yes, you will have to pull to snug up the last inch or so. In addition, to make a neat toroid winding, on each turn, form the wire around the *outside* of the core with a free finger or thumb before pulling it tight. The wire lengths given in the Elecraft manuals are usually generous, which assures adequate lead length no matter how sloppy the toroid winding may be. The ferrite cores sometimes have sharp corners. You can round off those corner edges carefully with a file or sandpaper if they are exceptionally sharp. 73, Don W3FPR Sam M wrote: On my K102 AUX I/O Module, I'm at the step that says: wind 12 turns of #26 red enamel wire (7, 18 cm) on the FT23-43 toroid core (L5) 1st question) is the 3/16 diameter dark gray ring really the toroid? [Elecraft] K2 -- loss of output power control
Our K2 was working perfectly until I opened it up, tightened the power transistor mounting screws, realigned the receiver, and put it back together. Now power output no longer follows the power setting. When set to a power output less than 10W, I hear the bypass relay but I get the High Cur display (momentarily) and the display then shows a power output of 0.3W with an SWR of 3.0. Output power as measured with a W1 is 20W. If I advance the power control, as soon as I pass the 10W point the PA comes on and the power jumps to 150W output. Turning the power level control fully CCW (0.1W setting) produces 6W of output. Looking at pin 7 of U5 on the KPA100 I can see good analog voltage that varies with power. I can see the value of VFWD change when the range changes (SCALE changes) also. I can also see varying VFWD at pin 2 of U1 so this does not appear to be an analog problem. FWIW, voltages at pin 2 of U1 for various power outputs are: 6W -- 0.15V 20W -- 0.30V 150W -- 0.29V At pin 7 of U5 (U5b): 6W -- 0.15V 20W -- 0.30V 150W -- 0.77V On the t-r menu item I have 8r hold set. I do have output on VRFDET but the value only varies from about 0.3V-0.7V so that appears to be working also. I am planning to fly to Dominica on Friday and operate from there but I can't take the K2 unless I solve this problem. Suggestions? The fan speed changes automatically depending on the temperature of the PA transistors. You can manually turn the fans on at each of the 4 speeds (for testing the fans) in the CONFIG:KPA3 menu. Beyond that, I don't think you can change the speed. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Dec 10, 2008, at 5:58 PM, Todd Ruby wrote: my fans make no noise at all. my question is: how do you change the fan speed? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Monitor
It is my understanding that the monitor audio in the K3 was not so good early on but that this has been taken care of and has been OK for quite awhile. The past two days I have gotten extensive on the air checks on 10 meters in preparation for the 10M contest coming up this week end as the monitor does not sound right to me. It sounds like there is a echo. However I have run checks with locals at S-9+ and with stations 200 miles away at S-0 to S-7 with QSB and I am getting great audio reports. The real clincher is I listen on my other K3 with the attenuator on and RF gain backed off and it sounds good. Something does not seem correct with my monitor audio, ie it is not a true representation of what the transmitter sounds like. Does anyone have any ideas? RE: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor
Hi Ed My monitor had a similar effect on SSB when I first got my K3. It was more of a delay in the monitor rather than an echo. However various firmware updates appear to have eliminated the issue. I am running the next to the last beta firmware update. I wonder what version you are running ? 73 Barry VK2BJ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Monitor does not sound good. It never has and it doesn´t now with the latest FW. The only way is to listen to yourself in another RX. / Jim SM2EKM --- Ed Gray W0SD wrote: It is my understanding that the monitor audio in the K3 was not so good early on but that this has been taken care of and has been OK for quite awhile. With MON, you hear the slightly delayed audio from the monitor as well as your own voice. This may be perceived by some as a slight echo. The delay is due to how DSP works. Tx audio is processed by the DSP (leveled, filtered and equalized), converted to a nominal 15 kHz IF, clipped (if compression is on) and then sampled, downconverted to audio, filtered again, and passed to the speaker or headphones (or, now, LINE OUT :-) There is some delay associated with all of this processing. This is most likely what you are hearing as a slight echo effect. If you record MON and then play it back while you are not speaking, you'll hear no echo. If you have the KDVR3 installed, listen to a voice message. No echo. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
