Re: [Elecraft] K3: Automated Transmit Gain Calibration at 5 W, 50 W, and 1 mW

Dick, nice utility. I've noticed an error can occur if the K3 is set to
lowish power when you start the calibration run. I had power set to 5.6
Watts and the 5 Watt cal routine failed. Setting the power to 35 Watts
allowed it all to run correctly. Apologies if this has already been noted.

Here's the post W7TEA was referring to:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2008-November/100401.html

Relevant excerpt from above post by KK7P:

>The second question has to do with the difference between the above and
below values for a given filter when the signal spacing is less than the
nominal width of the filter.

>This asymmetry is due to the way in which the K3 aligns the roofing and
DSP filter passbands. The signal is not necessarily centered in the
roofing filter passband; rather, the signal is shifted towards an edge
to maximize the use of the roofing filter's skirt selectivity.

>Why is this important?

>Consider the case in which you are using a wider filter in a crowded
band while operating CW. A huge signal appears very close by, perhaps 1
or 2 kHz away. The use of CW REV or CW may make a considerable
difference on the impact of that signal on the receiver. If the
passbands were centered, this tool would be less effective.

>And if huge signal are on both sides? Time to get a narrower roofing
filter!

To explain this another way, the K3 normally has the roofing filter
centered about the chosen PITCH in the CW passband. For example, if you use
a 600 Hz pitch, the "250 Hz" filter (actually 370 Hz) would have 6 dB points
at 600 +/- 185 Hz or a passband of 415 to 785 Hz. *HOWEVER* when using low
PITCH (as I prefer), the K3 may shift the filter passband so that its lower
end is no lower than 200 Hz. For example, if using a 300 Hz pitch, the
above filter's passband would cover 200-570 Hz and therefore the chosen 300
Hz pitch is not centered in the passband. The reason for doing this is to
reject the negative IF response which might allow signals from the negative
side of 0 Hz (if you've used older analog radios, you probably remember this
problem).

There's another possibility that could be causing some apparent
loss. Even though the 8-pole filters are advertised to have zero offsets,
in fact I believe some have discovered they may have up to 80 Hz offsets.
This has negligible effect at the wide filter bandwidths but could cause
some problems with the 250 Hz filter.

I would try the following test to troubleshoot the above problems.
Se PITCH = 600 and apply a steady signal (e.g. XG1 or XG2). Now tune slowly
and note the frequencies at which the signal drops by 6 dB. You've
eliminated the passband shift issue by setting 600 Hz pitch and you should
be able to determine if the filter's actual offset is something other than
zero. You can use the internal AFV/dBV meter to do this without any test
equipment other than a source (in fact you can even do this with the K3's
internal 49380 image as the source). Turn AGC OFF, apply your test signal
at what you believe is the center frequency (i.e. 7040 the XG1). Hold METER
and tune VFO B until you see AFV...you should see AFV in the display.
Allow the numbers to settle, then rotate VFO B slightly clockwise and
you should see 0.0 dBV. Now slowly tune above and below 7040 and note the
two frequencies at which you get -6.0 dBV readings. This should tell you
whether the filter is correctly centered. Of course you could simply have a
defective filter with high insertion loss, but doing the above will help
both you and k3supp...@elecraft.com determine what your actual problem is.

Ok. More weirdness. If the 2 receivers are on the same antenna ports the sub is
always way down. If the receivers are on opposite ports they work fine! I set
up the sig gen this morning and I can set A to 1 and B to ant2 and swap the
inputs with my sig gen and they are fine. If I put B on ant 1 and A on ant2
a-ok also. If I put them both on the same ant port the sub rx is always down.
They seem to be in parallel on the print. I must be missing something. I'm

RE: [Elecraft] K3: Automated Transmit Gain Calibration at 5 W, 50 W, and 1 mW

2008-12-27 Thread Dick Dievendorff
What happens when you do it manually at this same power setting? Does the
power continue to jitter around 5.0 to 5.2?

The calibration code samples the power shown in VFO B every 100 msec, for up
to 20 samples, until the last four samples have the same value. If they
don't settle to the same value, and if that value isn't between one digit of
the target value, the utility reports failure.

But the code sets the power to 5.0 watts before the calibration begins.

I'll play with this a bit to see what happens here.

Thank you!

Dick

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3: ADC Ref calibration

2008-12-27 Thread chen dave
My DMM say only 4.93v on pin 2 of the ACC connector. After calibration,
supply voltage measure show me 13.7V, actually it should be 13.85v(test on
K3 PS connector).
During the 100w key down test, K3 shows 13.1~13.2v, but actually it should
be 13.81V.

So, I think 5V "standard" is not so stable. Maybe it is not so important to
power supply
voltage test. but I think it is very important to TCXO module. According to
my test, TCXO is
much sensitive to power supply voltage change (than temperature change).

Any comments?

RE: [Elecraft] Automated Transmit Gain Calibration at 5 W, 50W, err txf

2008-12-27 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Using the K3 Utility's Configuration tab, click "Configure Crystal Filters"
(maybe it's Edit Crystal Filters) and verify that the filters you have
chosen for Tx CW and Tx SSB are your 2.7 filter in slot 2.

Is this the issue?

I'm trying to run the Calibrate Transmitter Gain routinre in Utility ver

Starting 5 Watt calibration.

Calibrating at 1.900 MHz

Unexpected response "DBERR TXF;" to "DB;". State 127

5 Watt calibration failed.

I verified that I have my 2.7 filter in # 2 slot selected, and I tried it
with ATU in auto and bypass. I'm also getting a ERR TXF error. The dummy
load I'm using I verified that it is close to 1 to 1 . Any suggestions?

I had the same trouble with mine, apparently due to the path from my K3 to the
dummy load which is sort of long, going through a few other pieces of equipment.

When I connected another dummy load to the K3 output cable ahead of the other
equipment it solved the problem. The second dummy load was a Bird Termaline.

[Elecraft] K2 Rig to Computer and Paddle cable

2008-12-27 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I'm clearing out my shack and found a cable to connect an Elecraft K2 to
a computer and paddles. The cable has on one end a 1/4" stereo jack to
wye 1/4" stereo plugs. The cable has the diodes wired into it so you
just can just plug in your paddle and computer and play! I used this on
my Elecraft K2 and it works great!

If interested in it, reply off list to WA3WSJ.

[Elecraft] KRX3 Problem

2008-12-27 Thread Randy Downs
Ok I have some Hunan chicken and it was great. Also I found that the relay K19
on the KAT3 was inverting my ant selection for the sub. If I selected 1 for
both then the sub was actually on 2 and visa versa. Don't know why or how. I
actually measured the connections with an ohmeter to the tmp con going to the
sub and it was! After several bset ant pushes it started working correctly!
Are these latching relays? All is ok now. Not sure how or why. If someone else

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 100 Low power on 160M

2008-12-27 Thread Andrew Lenton (Linux account)

Hi Don,

Just to tie the ribbons, I completed the KPA 100 up grade, blue cores
ect, and it made no difference, so I went back to basics, "what could
cause a poor return loss on 160 only into the KPA 100?" I checked the
following:

C86, C67, D11, R2,1 R22, C66, C60, C61, C62, C63 and R9 The fault was
traced to D11. although it measured OK and the volt drop when forward
biased was reasonable 0.65V, it did not like 160M and gave a poor
reflection to the K2 ( high current warning). I had replaced it before
to try and cure this fault, which threw me, however, the current
replacement is from a different manufacture!! so maybe not all 1N4007's
are the same!

Now I have brought the KPA up to reversion E the radio seems a lot more
stable, I am currently adding the 60M and transverter board. Thanks for
all your words of wisdom

[Elecraft] 6 meters

2008-12-27 Thread Phil LaMarche

If you recall, I was grumbling about 6 meters with my K3 and faintly hearing
signals. Today we did a 100% check on everything and found bad coax, even
though it was low loss and expensive. Examination showed a slash in the
coax halfway up to 85 ft. Replaced it with new and it now works very well
with several contacts. I have the preamp on order and soon it will be even
better. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

Todd this question often crops up, both here and elsewhere. It's usually
a problem with your software rather than the site.

Version 2.76 definitely exists at:

Have you tried clearing the cache from your browser? My Firefox locates
and downloads it without any issues, I have it set to clear it's cache
when exiting the program (clear private data when exiting the program).

what you're seeing.

My browser shows hfwnotes.rtf and k3fw2r76.zip. Both are dated 12/23 at

RE: [K3] [Elecraft] High Audio

2008-12-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hi Joe:

Audio gain at 9 to 11 o'clock is a very 'typical' setting. However, with the
RF gain turned down, your AGC may not be responding enough to reduce the
audio level when strong signals are present. Normally, the RF gain is set at
maximum when AGC is used.

The option is to set the AF gain to some nominal value (9 to 11 o'clock is
probably good) and then control the audio level with the RF gain control.
That will keep the AGC from bringing up band noise during lulls in the
transmissions, but your audio level will vary a great deal depending upon
the signal strength requiring that you "ride" the RF gain control for a
comfortable listening volume.

The K3's AGC characteristics (how quickly it acts and how it controls the
gain) are adjustable in the menus. Look under "CONFIG Menu" in the Owner's
manual (Rev D) for details about these settings.

AF gain at 9 to 11 o'clock is normal. If that bothers you,
set AF Gain (config menu) to Low and you will have to turn
the AF Gain up to around 1-3 o'clock to reach the same level
as you previously had at 9-11 o'clock.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 250Hz Filter gain maxed yet low

2008-12-27 Thread Jim Miller
Followup:

I followed the directions given by Bill, W4ZV, and noticed my 250hz
filter wasn't centered well. In fact the response increased by 1.4dB
as I moved up frequency 30hz or so.

I then recalled that I didn't really get comfortable with the REF CAL
results when I first (impatiently) turned on my rig. I redid the REF
CAL using WWV @ 10Mhz and moved it quite a bit and now get a very nice
zero beat per the instructions.

Now the 250hz filter centers perfectly and @8db of GN matches the
400hz filter "goodnuff".

Thanks to all!

I am using FW 2.76 no preamp, RF gain at 2-3 o"clock and a Heil headset.

On SSB audio level is consistently very high. I have to turn audio gain to
9-11 o'clock to listen comfortably

Is there a setting I am missing

[Elecraft] K-2 alignment and Test - Part 1 problem

2008-12-27 Thread Larry Wright
I have attempted to do the alignment and Test part 1 on page 43 of the manual.
Controls were set as indicated in the manual. When power turning on the K-2
with S1, there is nothing on the display. It does not read "INFO 201" or
"7100c". Neither will it read "Elecraft" for two seconds. The display always
remains blank. It does pass the relay test when tapping the "Band+" switch.
I also hear the relay click when the "PRE/ATTN" button is tapped.

Current drawn is about 125 ma from a 12.6 volt battery. Any help will be
appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried clearing the cache from your browser? My Firefox locates

The manual is correct, and has always worked for me. In fact, I just ran
the calibration on four S-meters (two main K3 receivers and two KRX3s). The
instructions also call for AGC-S ON and SMTR PK OFF with the XG2 signal in
the middle of your passband.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2008-12-27 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Luckily I have phone service back again. I lost power on Wedneday which
takes the phone service down with it about twelve hours later. For some reason
I picked up the phone while I was watching the sunset and I got a dial tone
The first thing I did was call the power company. Seems like power has been
restored to the substation but since the power outage occurred (it was a break
in the main line from Bonneville Dam to the Timber substation) another tree
fell lower down the mountain and broke the lines where they are above ground.
So the phone service has power but not Kevin. Oh well, looks like I am on the
list but may not get power back for a few more days.
I am still snowed in too so I am going a little stir crazy. My F250 made it
about 100 feet off the edge of the property before it climbed a large, but
hidden, snow drift and then it promptly sank. I walked out there today and
found the truck is up to its hoodline in snow. I called the county but they
have no plans for plowing the road. It is not a priority to them to plow roads
this year. Go figure :) But, the temperature has gone up and the rains have
started. This is clearing the snow and I may get out by Monday night. Scruffy
Kevin will get to the store and scare the locals :)
But, propagation has been good on emergency power. Oh, I did lose one
antenna entirely and the other has a tree limb wrapped in it pulling it much
lower than normal. It seems to be working so we will try the nets tomorrow. I
am moving both of them an hour earlier in an attempt to gain a few more check
ins. It would be nice to hear you all out there and hear what your weather is
like. Hopefully you all have power and are warm. Without electricity my house
is colder than normal. The fans move the air around and even out the heat.
Now the room with the stove is warm and I am not. My fingers are stiff. You
will most likely notice that tomorrow during the nets. This room is very far
from the stove. Oh well, hopefully I will get power back next week and will
get out on the roads again to scare the natives :)

Please join us tomorrow evening.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 and MixW audio input volume

2008-12-27 Thread K2MK
Also Peter, if you have the SUB turned on the Main receiver will be on the
left channel and SUB will be on the right channel. You might want to check
your audio level adjustments on your PC. Maybe the left and right levels are
not the same. I use a CONFIG: LIN OUT setting of "nor 010" but you also have
to consider the setting on your PC line-in. And check the back of the K3 to
be sure the line out plug is actually plugged into the line out jack and not
the headphone or speaker jack.

[Elecraft] KRX3 Problem Update

2008-12-27 Thread Randy Downs
After several pots of coffee, the problem was found. I gotta take up drinking.
The problem was on the subin board. T1 toroid, 2 of the wires did not have all
of the coating removed and did not take the solder well. Very evident after
tracing it down to the board. I wicked the solder out and scraped some of the
coating off and resoldered. My K3 is playing like a fine instrument again. This
might be something to check before installing the Sub Rx. I hate those
intermittent.

Re: [Elecraft] K-2 alignment and Test - Part 1 problem

2008-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Larry,

Check the Front Panel board carefully. Peer under the LCD display to
see if pin 1 is soldered on the U1 socket. If that pin is not soldered,
you will have a blank display.
Should that be the case, DO NOT remove the LCD - there is another way to
solder that pin!
With a knife or other tool, remove some of the plastic at the pin 1
location on the socket. Remove just enough so you can get the tip of
your soldering iron onto the socket pin and the solder pad on the top of
the board. Now you can heat the pin and solder pad from the top and
gingerly apply solder from the bottom under the LCD.

Burke,

Check the soldering on the encoder pins. It does sound like you have an
encoder problem if some kind - maybe a bad encoder - in all the KX1s
that I have built and repaired (I have not kept count, but it is not a
small number), I have found only one bad encoder, but even though it is
rare, it can still happen.

[Elecraft] Problems With Six Meters

2008-12-27 Thread -.-. --.-N3TU -.-. --.-

This was the first time I used six meters to do repeater operation. When I
had the power up to 100 watts, the radio shut off. So I backed the power
down to 35 watts and it worked fine. There seems to be too many amps drawn
up there. At 35 watts, I was drawing 24-25 amps which I took a reading on my
external power supply. The fans inside were running unlike SSB in which they
hardly come on. My G5RV antenna hit the repeater 65 miles away on 35 watts
and I had "frying eggs" on my signal. So I decided to increase the power and
the radio shut off. Now on SSB on 10 meters, I am drawing between 10-15
amps. My SWR's were 1:1 with the it tuned inside the radio. I have a ground
on the back of the radio which I tested and it works. Whats going on with
this?

Second problem on six meters. I had the mic game all the way up and the
audio is low or it sounded like I was talking far away from the mic even
when I was on top of it. What adjustments do I need to make regarding the
audio? It also sounds tinty/low unlike the nice rich audio I get on SSB.

[Elecraft] K3 Memory Recall - Acting Like Band Select

2008-12-27 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I've updated to 2.67 and I have Mem 0-9 set to nor, but i cannot access
memory channels directly beyond 0-9. If I want memory channel 15, I press
V>M, then as soon as I press the 1, I'm taken to memory 1. If I want 61, I
get a "NOT SET" error becasue I don't have a memory 6.

I seem to recall this working properly in earlier versions. Has something
changed or is there another setting I'm not current on?

I just upgraded to the second receiver, DVR and the two audio mods the other
night if that has any correlation.
