You may have discovered this by now, but in my experience you need to remove
the spacers too, not just unscrew them from the front panel.

A Happy New Year to you too!

Re: [Elecraft] KX1, Removing Underside of Board

2009-01-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Cliff,

The KX1 has no fuses inside, one should always fuse the power cord.

The board removes quite easily, but yes, the paddle jack does catch a
bit on one side of the enclosure top.
Just grasp the paddle jack and pull that side of the board out of the
enclosure first, the rest will follow. You can exert a bit of pressure
on the enclosure sides to spread it apart a bit, it will spring right
back after the pressure is released.

No need to remove the standoffs as another poster suggested.

Re: [Elecraft] k2-100

2009-01-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ron,

I would look for a problem in the KPA100 T/R switch area. Especially be
suspect of Q6 and Q7, D11, D12, D13 and D14.

While this sounds like a condition when a relay contact is damaged,
resist that thought because the K2 and KPA100 transmit/receive switching
does not operate any relays, it is entirely electronic.

When you say you bypass the antenna around the KPA100 do you mean that
you attach the antenna to the base K2 *in place of* the KPA100? please
explain better just how you are accomplishing that. Is this a KPA100
mounted externally to the base K2?

As Don said, you just need to bend the case out a little to clear the keyer
connector.  You didn't mention it, but I assume you removed the tuning knob.

I  had a similar failure to turn on a while ago and found that the switch
wasn't working.   I just sprayed it with contact cleaner and worked it a few
times and it has been ok since.

[Elecraft] RE: Obscure RTTY bug?

2009-01-01 Thread K2MK

Hi Iain:

I was curious to see where this thread was going. I too noticed crackling
monitor audio on AFSK A mode. But in my case it was present when the dual
passband filter was engaged and disappeared when I was listening with the
normal filter. I'm not bothered by the crackling I just hope it is not going
out in the transmitted signal.

[Elecraft] Obscure RTTY bug?
Iain MacDonnell - N6ML
Wed, 31 Dec 2008 14:40:25 -0800

Preparing for the ARRL RTTY Round-Up this weekend, I ran into a strange
problem. Using AFSK A mode, feeding transmit audio into the K3's line
in from the computer running MMTTY (also tried with DM780, with the same
result), I would get a crackling noise along with the RTTY tones in the
K3's monitor audio. I don't know if the crackling is transmitted, or
just in the monitor. Levels are set for 5 bars on the ALC meter, and
the problem occurs in TX TEXT mode.

After lots of tearing my hair out (well, at least tearing my cables out
and trying other ones), I observed two things that make it go away:

1) Changing to USB (REV DATA)

2) Turning *off* TEXT DEC

I recorded the probleml, from line-out, with text decode on and off:

http://www.dseven.org/k3/

Why the text decode would cause crackle in the monitor audio, and why
not in REV mode, I'm not sure... but I would like to be able to have
the decoder turned on...

[Elecraft] K3 drift

2009-01-01 Thread Ron Durie
After 9 months of ageing my K3 # 604, I ran a cold to hot Reference
Oscillator Test.

My Reference Oscillator is the Optional 1ppm Temp Compensated Crystal
Oscillator (KTCXO3-1).
This TCXO came with a Factory calibration data sheet which shows
frequency verses temperature over a wide range.

My Ambient Room Temperature was 72 deg F up to 74 deg F.

At turn on (cold) the Reference was adjusted to WWV (15Mhz) and it
measured: 49,379,924 Mhz.
After 5 min it measured: 49,379,925 Mhz.
After 10 min it measured: 49,379,925 Mhz.
After 15 min it measured: 49,379,926 Mhz.
After 20 min it measured 49,379,928 Mhz. That is an 4Hz shift up in
Reference frequency.

For the next 14 hours it measured: 49,379,928 Mhz.
It looks like it will stay there as long as the Ambient Room
Temperature remains near 74 deg F.

This is Very impressive and will (can you believe it) get even better
when Elecraft enables the 1ppm TCXO Option in Firm Ware.
This will (for all practical purposes) eliminate the errors due to
temperature changes.

The more I use my K3 and the more I learn about it the more I like it.
This is a very exciting and satisfying radio. Thanks Elecraft.

Look at that monstrously wide local station at 1490kHz. Using USB mode
the distant station at 1500kHz is perfectly copyable, in fact the disco
music from 1490 is barely noticeable. No other mode will bring the 1500kHz
station through. The K3 has such great suppression of the opposite
sideband that there is absolutely no flutter (which is usually a problem
with analog radios) when zero beating an AM station. You bet, SSB mode
reception of AM stations is a very good option in difficult situations
 with this radio.

[Elecraft] KDVR3 installed now no RF power

2009-01-01 Thread Roger Dallimore
I installed the KDVR3 to #191 last night and it appears to work fine
(enabled in Config) but I now have very little RF output when connected
to a dummy load. The 100w PA doesn't appear to kick in when the power is
increased above 12 watts and there is no power output showing on the
meter at all. The ATU relays click when activated but no SWR value
appears.

I'm using the latest firmware and have double checked that all the pins
lined up when I reassembled the front panel. At the same time as
fitting the KDVR3 I incorporated the speaker amp mod, front panel mic
mod (ground pin 7) and the keying rise time mod. After each of these
were done I checked resistance as per instructions and all appears fine
there and I feel confident that I didn't damage anything else while do
these mods (famous last words!).

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated about where to check next,
later this evening I'll remove the KDVR3 and see what happens.

2009-01-01 Thread Chad WE9V
This sounds exactly like the problem I report to the reflector on 11/23
titled K3 AFSK RTTY overdrive - no ALC. Everyone on the reflector
poo-poo'd it as it being a problem on my end. I'm glad to see others come
out of the woodwork with the same problem. I haven't tried RTTY since
upgrading to the latest firmware to see if it's gotten worse, but the
ticking sound would go away when I only used about 2 bars of ALC, but then
it was difficult to get the full 100W output. Mine, too, was present in TX
TEST mode, so I knew it wasn't a RF issue.

In listening to the signal on another receiver the ticking/crackling seems
to make the TX signal wider, but that's only by earI don't have a scope.

PowerSDR in SAM mode sounds great. In all modes the audio from PowerSDR is
consistently better than from the K3 using the same headphones. Of course
with SAM there is no direct comparison since the K3 still lacks that option.
I didn't try, but I bet SAM would loose lock in the situation above. I might
try that tonight.

[Elecraft] Two K3s as Carry-on Luggage

2009-01-01 Thread J. Edward (Ed) Muns
I had two K3s and three laptops, plus all the cables, trackballs, etc. in my
carry-on luggage. Rose Kopp put some mods on the two K3 cases she made for
me so they could be attached to one another and carried with one strap so
the airline folks count it as one piece. My other carry-on luggage piece
is a roll-about computer bag. I tried running the dual K3 bag through the
security X-ray machine and it overloaded the operator. So, we had to run
each K3 through by itself. But when done individually, I've never had them
ask about it. Most of the X-ray ops ID a K3 as a slide projector, which is
fine with me.

[Elecraft] glow on KAt3?

2009-01-01 Thread Gary Smith
Last night I was at my girlfriend's house and I'd assembled a dipole
I made from a pair of short multi band radials from a Butternut made
of 300 ohm ribbon line. I placed this around the corners of the
living room and was looking for the source of RFI in her house
(turned out to be her APEX TV set even when turned off).

Though the dipole is resonant on 40M I used the K3 tuner to adjust
for 80M. It settled on a 1.6-1 adjustment.

I had just moved the new Astron VS-35M PS and must have bumped the
crowbar control in that the power to the K3 went out when I started
transmitting with a few dits. The voltage on the PS showed zero but
the lights were on. I restarted the PS and the voltage went back to
normal. I discovered the overcurrent was set very low (it was set for
about 5 amps max) and restoring the current setting to the proper
location got everything working again.

But... before the crowbar tripped I could swear I noticed a glow on
the KAT3 through the ventilation slots on the top panel the color
was about the same yellow as the LED on the RF board. As there is the
shielding around the RF deck from the KPA3, this could not have been
light reflected from that diode. The glow looked to be from right
about where the sockets for the coax wires attach but on the inside
of the ATU. I didn't notice that earlier or after but it did catch my
attention just before the power supply cut off.

It was New Year's Eve but I hadn't hit the EggNog yet so I'm
wondering if there's an issue, something expected or if this was
caused by an undigested bit of gruel?

The PA seems to be fine as does the KAT3. Are there any checks I
might do to see if an error ode of any kind is present? Nothing shows
on the display. All seems normal but that localized yellow glow has
me wondering.

Thanks,

Gary

It does seem like something like that, but what I can't get past is the
fact that turning off the text decoder makes the problem go away (for
me, at least).

BTW, occasionally I can start transmitting with the text decoder on, and
the problem will not occur, and doesn't seem to start during a
transmission, but if I stop and restart, the problem comes back right
away.

I've also reproduced it at different mark (PITCH) frequencies.

I wonder if it could be some sort of resource contention between the
decoder and the DSP or something?

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Q6 Equivalent part question

2009-01-01 Thread J.H. de Wit
Hi Tom,

In my K-2 the 2SC5739 turned out to be a bad replacement for the 2SC2166.
My modulation was very 'raspy' and no fun to listen to.
So I checked everything in the final stage to get rid of this problem.
Any time after I started my transmission it sounded good but after a while
the modulation became bad again. So the bad modulation could be a heating
problem.
By checking the 2SC5739 it was so hot, you could not even touch it! The
surrounding parts including T2 became hot!!!
After changing the 2SC5739 for the intended 2N2166 the problem was gone.
Just a warm (not hot) 2N2166 and a good SSB quality.
By checking the datasheet from the 2SC5739 it looks like this transistor was
developed for video purposes.

Just my 2 cents

[Elecraft] KRX3 Inventory Question: Foam Pads

I do not have anything labeled E850324, Foam Pads.

Re: [Elecraft] FM filter - AM transmit with it?

2009-01-01 Thread Dave, G4AON
Gary, this question has been asked before, 24th May 2007. Eric replied
with the following:

The short answer is a 'qualified' yes. The wider FM filter can be used
for AM transmit and receive, since the DSP limits the AM bandwidth, but
   there will be two issues.

   1. On receive you will be subject to AGC blocking (de-sense) from
   nearby
signals inside the 13 kHz FM filter's bandwidth but outside the
   DSP's AM
bandwidth. (Typically those over S9+20 to 30.)

   2. On transmit we will not guarantee that there will not be an increase
in close in spurious signals inside the FM filter bandwidth. Normally
the AM filter reduces any undesired transmit signals outside of its
   bandwidth.

So for casual AM listening, or AM transmission on a non-crowded band
this might be OK. But we recommend the AM filter for any regular AM
   transmit usage.

2009-01-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ron,

You are correct that the T/R switch is bypassed when the KPA100 is set
off in the menu.

If I recall your prior post, it behaved correctly with the cable removed
from your KIO2 adapter.
Leave the KIO2 plugged in and the base K2 with its top cover off. Then
when it misbehaves, check the voltage on the 8R voltage rail - easily
accessible at Control Board Q2 collector. The normal voltage during
receive is 7.5 to 8 volts, and if it is substantially lower, the K2 will
not receive well.

That is the one signal that is carried to the KPA100 from the base K2
that could reduce receive signal levels.

[Elecraft] RE: KRX3 Inventory Question: Foam Pads

2009-01-01 Thread Robert Dorchuck
I have the Speaker Pad #E980148 but it is a circular foam pad.

My main RF Board also has a red sticker with a couple X's
pasted between the FL1 and FL2 slot. Anyone else have this??

I worry about red stickers with X's.

Happy New Year.

[Elecraft] k3 SWR readings seem generous

2009-01-01 Thread Mike Scott
I have been working on antennas today and have a puzzle. I am finding that
the K3 SWR indications are unbelievable generous.

With my 40M inverted V fed with RG8X (50 ohm) coax I see that the K3 seems
generous in the SWR indication on tune with ATU bypassed. I have noticed a
slight change in SWR with K3 power setting so the following was taken with
K3 tune power set to 100 watts. If I set it to 10 watts the discrepancy is
greater...
  SWR SWR SWR
Freq. K3 VA1 Daiwa
7.00 MHz 1.3 1.922.0
7.05 MHz 1.2 1.921.9
7.1 MHz 1.2 1.981.95
7.15 MHz 1.3 2.262.1
7.2 MHz 1.9 2.602.3
7.25 MHz 1.5 2.882.6
7.3 MHz 1.6 3.322.7

The Daiwa is the CN-101L cross needle meter. The VA1 is the Autek Rx Vector
antenna analyzer. The VA1 does not have a tuned input so it is possible
that it can be fooled by local broadcast stations. I don't suspect this
issue here as there aren't any close by broadcast stations that I am aware
of. The Daiwa and the VA1 tend to agree pretty well anyway. The K3
measurements are the outliers. This antenna on a Tenna Dipper shows
minimal SWR at 7.040 MHz, just where I tuned it a few years ago. The LED
does not extinguish indicating higher than 1:1 SWR at the minimum. If you
look at the numbers, I guess I don't believe the K3, Do you think my antenna
is below 1.6 to 1 across the entire 40M band?

So now on to 20M dipole fed with RG58 (50 Ohm Coax)...
The Tenna Dipper fully extinguishes at 13.805 MHz indicating that my antenna
is bit too long but is close to 1:1 at that frequency.

FreqK3 VA1 Daiwa
13.81 -- 1.12--
14.0 MHz1.11.241.31
14.1 MHz1.11.301.70
14.2 MHz1.11.551.85
14.3 MHz1.21.691.85

RG58 may have some losses on this band so perhaps all of the SWR indications
are generous, some more than others. The dipole is a low one and probably
isn't 72 ohms at the feed point.

RE: [Elecraft] Two K3s as Carry-on Luggage

2009-01-01 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Heh, heh... Hams are *everywhere*

When packing stuff that will be x-rayed, it's good to consider the image the
screener will see. Years ago, when I was traveling filming documentaries, I
unthinkingly packed a brand new Beaulieu motion picture camera in a carry-on
case. The Beaulieu had a long zoom lens and a small body behind it with a nice
pistol grip underneath.

As it ran through the X-ray, the operator stopped the machine, looked, called
someone else over and, the next I knew two armed security guards escorted me to
a table where I was instructed to open the case.

And this was long before 9/11.

On the Xray, it looked exactly like some sort of automatic weapon.

After we totally disassembled the camera and they peered inside every part, I
was allowed to continue.

On subsequent flights I was careful to ask the people to inspect the contents
visually.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 SWR readings seem generous

2009-01-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mike,

I have to accept your observations, but must ask - have you calibrated
the K3 wattmeter? Neglecting to do that can cause the SWR readings to
be off by a fair amount.

That being said, consider the purpose of the K3 having an SWR indication
at all - that is to determine the minimum SWR during a TUNE cycle. The
*minimum* SWR is the important parameter to indicate the best tuning
point rather than any absolute SWR reading.

Long ago when using manual tuners, my elmer told me to simply tune for
the lowest reflected power possible, and that was the correct tuning
point. The KAT3 tuner algorithm does the same thing - it seeks the
minimum reflected power - the absolute SWR is not important, although it
may be of interest.

Even so, the K3 SWR indication on your K3 does seem to be lower than it
should be. Again, if you have not done the Wattmeter Calibration, that
would be a step in the right direction.

[Elecraft] Differenced Between Filter KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw and KFL3A-2.8K?

2009-01-01 Thread Jeff Maass

purpose.

Now I see from the Elecraft order page that there is the note:

   Order KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw instead if replacing

Does anyone know what the different is between KFL3A-2.8K and
KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw? Should
I wait to get a KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw to swap out the old filter in the main
receiver?

Re: [Elecraft] Differenced Between Filter KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw andKFL3A-2.8K?

2009-01-01 Thread Bill W5WVO
Hi Jeff,

From the order page:

KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw 2.8 kHz 8-pole REPLACEMENT of the standard 2.7
kHz 5 pole filter

(For the K3 and /or the KRX3 - Only at time of initial shipment
of the K3 or KRX3. Please state if the replacement 2.8 kHz filter
applies to the K3, KRX3 or both in the order comments section. Two
of this item must be ordered if for K3 and KRX3.)

In other words, if you order a K3 or KRX3 (which come with the 2.7
kHz filter by default) and you want them to replace the standard
2.7 kHz filter in your order with the 2.8 kHz filter, the lower
price ($95.95) can be had if you indicate this in your original
order. If you order the 2.8 kHz filter separately, as you
apparently did, the price is $125.95.

There is no technical difference between the filters, just the
price. So you can safely replace the 2.7 kHz filter with the 2.8
kHz filter that you have.

RE: [Elecraft] Differenced Between Filter KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw and KFL3A-2.8K?

2009-01-01 Thread Dick Dievendorff
There is a 2.7 kHz filter and a 2.8 kHz filter.

The KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw is an order entry item for people that wish to order a
K3 with (just) the 2.8 kHz filter instead of the 2.7 kHz filter that
normally comes with a K3.

It's a swap order item. If you order a K3, and then order a separate 2.8
kHz filter, you'd pay $125.95 for the 2.8 kHz filter and you'd have an extra
2.7 kHz left over.

If instead you order the KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw at the time you order your K3,
it'll come with just the 2.8 kHz filter, and the 2.8 kHz filter upgrade
costs $95.95. They won't send the stock 2.7 kHz filter.

But you have to arrange this swap before your K3 or KRX3 is shipped.

Dick, K6KR

[Elecraft] THANKS! RE: Differenced Between Filter KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw and KFL3A-2.8K?

2009-01-01 Thread Jeff Maass

Thanks to all who replied.

I understand now that the separate price for initial orders to account for the
swapping of
the standard 2.7-KHz part with the 2.8-KHz part.

When I ordered my K3/100 (s/n 1192), the 2.8-KHz filters were backordered. This
predated
the separate part numbers. The 2.8-KHz filter for the K3 main receiver was
received here a
while ago as the backorder cleared, but has not yet been installed. I just
wanted to make
sure that I can still swap in that part while I'm also installing the KRX3.

KRX3 installation tomorrow (Friday)!

RE: [Elecraft] k3 SWR readings seem generous

2009-01-01 Thread John Gaynard
Isn't the LP100A giving you the actual SWR, not the tuned SWR since the
LP100A is getting current samples from the feedline to the antenna and is
independent of the K3 tuner. The K3 tuner is making the K3 see 50 ohms.
The LP100 is telling you the actual SWR that exists prior to the K3 tuning
it to the 50 ohm. I have the LP100 using it with a SteppIR BiggIR vertical
and also a Gap Voyager vertical for 160m and 80m. The LP100 reads around
1.04:1 on the SteppIR on 40m as does the K3 (shows 1 bar), which is close to
what my old Diamond meter use to read. However, the Gap SWR is around the
2.3:1 range when the K3 (or PW-1 tuner) reads about 1.5:1 or less. I then
realized it was showing me the real SWR, not the tuned SWR.

I think I am correct in this assumption.

[Elecraft] Order of assembly K3 Options

2009-01-01 Thread Gary Smith
I ordered the KXV3 with the K3/100 to assemble at the time of
purchase but it was back-ordered at the time of shipment and it
arrived this week. I have the KRX3 on order and it will be ready for
shipment fairly soon. I am going to order the KBPF3 general coverage
module and the 1ppm KTCXO3-1 TCXO module to be sent asap if they are
in stock.

I found some of the connectors resistant to insertion when putting
the K3/100 together. For instance; the ones where you needed to use
your thumbs under the RF board to prevent the board from twisting
during insertion; I had to use a fair amount of force to get these
sockets fully engaged and they usually went in with a snap. Indeed
all the pins were full mated and all assemblies installed 100%.

Considering the deliberate latching when inserted, these connectors
are re-assuringly secured in place but I remember thinking to myself,
'I do not look foreward to removing them when I wish to add another
module.' So I don't want to keep removing and replacing parts back
there.

There is one port in the back marked REF, which now has a plastic
plug in place. I don't know if the connector that goes in there is
part of the sub receiver as no such connector is with the KXV3 and I
seem to have missed mention of it with the assembly of the K3/100 but
it looks to be tucked in a freely in-accessible area so perhaps it is
part of the RX sub?

I'd like to install the KRX3 asap but will hold off if I need to
remove the boards above the REF port.

So from those of you with experience in installing these modules in
an already assembled K3/100, in which order should the following
modules should be installed so I do not have to remove reinstall
these various strip connectors more often than necessary?

Again, the modules to be installed at this point are:

KXV3 (now at the QTH ready for installation)
KRX3 (on back-order)
KBPF3 gen coverage (to be ordered asap)
1ppm KTCXO3-1 TCXO (to be ordered asap)

Thanks,

Gary

RE: [Elecraft] k3 SWR readings seem generous

2009-01-01 Thread John Gaynard
I forgot to mention. I do not use the ATU on my K3 on 40m since I have the
SteppIR BiggIR vertical, and the K3 SWR reading shows only 1 bar which tells
me it is seeing 1:1 SWR which is close to the LPA100 reading of 1.04:1. The
LP100 just shows the unvarnished truth sometimes about the actual antenna
resonance. It is a great tool.

I noticed the same thing. My factory-assembled K3 is reading 1.0 SWR while
my LP-100A and tuner both agree on about 1.4-1.5.
