[Elecraft] UK Elecraft net report for Sunday 12th April

2009-04-12 Thread Dave G4AON
Conditions this week were mostly OK, although continental contest
stations occasionally caused problems.

The Blackpool Rally was well attended with several "Elecrafters" meeting
with Peter, G3UCA and Ian, G0VGS, who were present on an Elecraft stand
and the Sands Contest Group stand.
Paul, M1PAF, had particularly good audio from his K3 courtesy of a Heil
PR781 microphone.

Stations this week were:

M1PAF, Paul
G0VGS, Ian
G0MJW/P, Mike
G4DQP, Vince
GM3SEK, Ian
G8ZGK, Derf

73 until next week

Re: [Elecraft] FW: [CQ-Contest] SOME THOUGHTS ON USING THE K3 ON SSB

2009-04-12 Thread Bill W4ZV

After extensive experiments with tx audio settings in pursuit of "perfect
audio" for my purposes - dxing on 80m - I came to the conclusion that for my
voice with the HC-4, an offset of -0.07 with the 2.8 kHz filter was about
right.

It's not unusual for the 8-pole filters to have small offsets, which would be
particularly noticeable if on the bass side of the passband. I've heard of up
to 80 Hz (0.08) in some CW filters. Anything large than that, indicates
something else may be going on (like accidentally resetting the 5-pole offset
to zero as K7SV noted in the original post).

Re: [Elecraft] "Chinese copy" of KX-1?

2009-04-12 Thread Ken Alexander

Love the LCD display. I wish Elecraft had gone that route.

However, if and when something goes wrong (even though it's assembled already)
there's no Don Wilhelm or Elecraft mailing list to back you up, and to me
that's worth the extra money.

Bob, I haven't noticed a difference with AGC PLS on or off. I haven't played
with it much so it may or may not make a difference in different conditions.

[Elecraft] K2-Control Board Resistance Test

2009-04-12 Thread Philip L. Graitcer
First time kit builder and have just completed control board, but
resistance checks do not seem to check out for several points:

P2, U5, U4 are all okay
*Q1 & Q2 collectors - both around 29K
U6 - pin 8 is okay (about 75K),
*U6 - pins 13, 14, are around 40K,
U6 - pins 29 and 30 are okay (around 40K)
*U8 - pin 2 about 40.7K, pins 15, 16, both 29.3K

I have inspected all solder joints with magnifier. I double checked
components.

What should I do next?

Could someone describe a procedure to measure filter offset. I have
spectragram (can't remember the real name) software on my PC.

I have a five pole 2.7 KHz in each of main and subreceiver. They are matched
to -0.87 but I would like to measure and split the difference if there is
one. I do notice that the main rx filter has enough of a passband slope that
USB and LSB frequency response is notably different. I can hear a
significant change to background noise color when I change modes. For this I
am hoping to have mode-specific equalization some day. It is also possible
that a different offset might improve what I am hearing.

Re: [Elecraft] K2-Control Board Resistance Test

2009-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
Phil,

The most likely problem is that you have a solder bridge somewhere (or
perhaps several). Look at the amount of solder on your connections. If
it has more than a very small fillet, there is too much solder.
Actually with the plated through holes just enough solder to fill the
holes is sufficient, but I like to see a small fillet on the solder pad.

The solder connections should *not* look like 'balls of solder' (with a
convex shape), the solder joints should have a concave shape to them.
It has been said that a good solder joint looks like a mountain, but not
a volcano. Connections that have a concave shape usually indicate that
insufficient heat was applied to the solder pad, and the solder did not
flow out sufficiently.

If you do have too much solder, the cure is to take some away - solder
wick works nicely or a professional type de-soldering tool works more
quickly. I know it is a lot of work to wick away the excess solder, but
if I have described the condition of your Control Board correctly, that
is the only positive cure. In the future, heat the solder connection
fully so the solder flows out well and control the amount of solder -
this is *not* a thing where 'more is better'. A small diameter solder
allows better control of the amount applied.

[Elecraft] K3: AGC Compendium Development-Anyone Interested in Sharing Settings?

2009-04-12 Thread David and Dianne on Comcast
Hi Everyone,

Bill, N2BC's recent updates to his very slick K3EZ Manager Program
http://home.roadrunner.com/~n2bc/SW.htm
 has introduced some very
excellent features, one of them the ability to store and load directly
to the K3 various combinations of AGC settings for use under different
conditions, modes etc..

I have been thinking for a while about compiling a 'Compendium of K3 AGC
Settings' from various users. Once complied, I would share this
collection of settings with anyone interested in receiving this
information gratis, either from me or perhaps through Bill or Elecraft
depending upon how it all evolves, if at all.

If you are interested in sharing your AGC settings and any related
comments in order to receive back those of your colleagues, please reply
to me with your favorite AGC setting(s) in the following format:

Your Callsign: _ (Optional)
AGC HLD: ___
AGC PLS: ___
AGC SLP: ___
AGC THR: __
AGC F: ___
AGC S: ___
Mode Used: _
AGC Type (F or S): ___
Comments: _

Anyone interested? Testing the waters.

Happy Easter and Passover to all.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Measuring Filter Offset

2009-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

Since the goal is to make the 2 filters agree with each other, I would
suggest using stereo input to Spectrogram - the main RX on the left
channel and the sub RX on the right. It should be visually apparent
when the two filter passbands are overlapping each other to the greatest
degree possible.

A noise generator on the antenna input with the main and sub both
sharing the same antenna would be more helpful than attempting to use
'band noise', but if no noise generator is available, band noise should
still be informative.

I have not tried this (no subRX here), but I do believe it will work
fine - Spectrogram will display both channels at once.

[Elecraft] [K2][K3] Rework Eliminator(TM) Milestones & Plans

2009-04-12 Thread Ken Kaplan
We are considering aftermarket accessories for the K3 and welcome your
ideas for new products. We are especially interested in kits ...

o Composed of one or more printed circuit boards.
o For which there's sufficient interest to justify producing 60 units.
o We could design, produce, and offer for sale for less than $40.
o That might require custom engraving and/or pad printing.

We are already considering an external K3 mic adaptor based on our
internal K2 adaptor. It would work with (just about) any mic that has
an 8-pin Foster connecter, and permit use of either the K3's front panel
connecter or the rear panel mic and PTT jacks.

--- - - - ---

If you are not familiar with our Rework Eliminator(TM) aftermarket K2
accessory kits, we invite you to visit our website. Or, for a
third-party perspective check out the following product reviews at
www.eham.net ...

o www.eham.net/reviews/detail/6372 = Headers & Assembly Method
o www.eham.net/reviews/detail/6918 = Internal Mic Adaptor

--- - - - ---

We also invite those of you who have experience with our products to
consider writing your own reviews; that they might benefit future K2
builders. You can do this via the links below ...

o www.eham.net/reviews/addreview/6372 = Headers & Assembly Method
o www.eham.net/reviews/addreview/6918 = Internal Mic Adaptor

--- - - - ---

On a personal note, we consider 13 April 2005 to be the "official"
beginning of our Rework Eliminators(TM) collaboration. Also, we reached
a significant milestone last month when we received our 500th customer
order! It has been our pleasure serving the Elecraft community the past
four years, and we look forward to many more.

[Elecraft] K3: 'Line In' problems

2009-04-12 Thread Jason Reber
Greetings everyone;

I just got the new K3 assembled, and I'm really enjoying it. However, I
have an issue with the "line in" not working, and I wonder if anyone
else has seen this with a recently purchased K3.
I'm trying to use the "line in" for PSK 31, but the input is not
working. I've read previous posts, so I've ensured that the MIC SEL is
set to Line In, and that the mic gain for Line In is is not at zero.
When I move the cable to the rear panel Mic Input, and set the MIC SEL
to rP.L, everything works fine.

I've tried the released firmware from January, and the current beta
firmware, and neither helps. Is there anything else I might be missing?

Thanks,

Jason AC7JW

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement

2009-04-12 Thread Jim Wiley

Mike et al -

It might be good to check to see if you aren't doing it to yourself.
14.318 divided by 4 is 3.579 MHz, the "color burst" frequency used by
millions of consumer devices as a reference frequency, and not just TV
sets. I have heard carriers on or around that frequency with strengths
up to and including "S9" for literally years. Harmonics from poorly
designed or shielded oscillators in TV sets, computers, clocks, DVD
players, VCRs, microwave ovens, game players, fax machines, printers,
telephones, toys, medical devices, and many more items have polluted
this frequency for at least 20 years. Just now I checked and can hear
at least 5 separate "sources" in a casual check of the frequency -
and those are just the "loud ones" from a random beam heading. I am
sure there are dozens more underneath the louder ones. .

The sources are so ubiquitous that it is virtually impossible to escape
them no matter where you live. The signals that you are hearing are
probably not the same ones that another ham in the next state is
hearing, but there are so many of them that it is unlikely anyone can
escape them.

They are part of the reason for that FCC warning about "Operation this
device may cause interference to nearby radio ant TV receivers ."
(I am paraphrasing here) that you see on so many consumer electronics
devices.

One reason your DSP may be having trouble eliminating the carriers is
that there are usually several on slightly differing frequencies. The
crystals aren't all that accurate in some devices, and by the time we
get to the 4th harmonic, differences of a few tens of Hertz to several
hundred Hertz are common. Most of these oscillators are not in some
type of circuit that is phase locked to a master source, as is the case
for some TV broadcasts. Most of them are "free running" in the sense
that all they have to be is "close enough" to perform the task at hand.,

Hi Jim,

That makes sense. I was thinking a bit and realized most computer
motherboards have a 14.318mc oscillator in them. Then as you said the
color burst freq x4 and that makes a huge mess out of that freq and near
by. 20m was up & down and the solar conditions are terrible this weekend
compounding the problem of having only 15w to work with. At least one

Re: [Elecraft] K3 is not responding

2009-04-12 Thread Guy Olinger, K2AV
I have had an off and on problem with a USB to serial dongle, and finally
discovered the following pattern:

Using Windows XP, all current windows upgrades maintained.

Using the USB dongle purchased from Elecraft. The Elecraft recommended
drivers from the mfr. have been installed.

K3 is on.

K3 is reachable via the USB dongle on COM3 by other programs, N1MM, etc on
COM3

ANY firmware update arrives, makes no difference.

Start up 1.2.16 K3 utility. Finds K3 right off, no problems.

Install firmware no problems.

**IF** I terminate the K3 1.2.16 utility and after that power off the K3 I
have no problems. COM3 is still around to play with as desired.

**IF** I do the recommended K3 power off BEFORE I terminate the K3 1.2.16
utility, this locks up the utility. It cannot be terminated with the "X"
button in the upper right of the window.

Powering the K3 back on does not restore the utility to operation. The only
way to terminate the utility is with Windows Task Manager.

Further, regardless of whether K3 is back on COM3 has been rendered
unreachable and the only way to restore it to communications is with a
reboot.

This particular sequence is the only one which creates this lockup.

Turning off the K3 with N1MM running does not cause this issue, N1MM
complains about lost communications until I turn the K3 back on and it's
happy again. This would seem to be an issue with the utility only.

Perhaps this has involvement with some of the reported issues?

73, Guy.

[Elecraft] K3: Audio Mixer

2009-04-12 Thread David Gilbert

There was a discussion here recently about being able to listen to the
main receiver in both ears while listening to the subreceiver only in
the right ear, which to me makes a lot of sense for contesting
optimum spatial cognition using both ears to pick out weak callers on
the main run frequency while being able to scan for other contacts with
the right ear.

So I bought a Behringer Xenyx 502 audio mixer to give that a try. It
just arrived yesterday and I must say that it works great. It was easy
to set up and gives me total control over both audio channels ... I can
make any amount of audio from either the main or subreceiver appear in
either earphone. Having the main in both ears and the sub in the right
ear is very, very nice ;) If anyone wants to give it a try, send me an
email and I'll describe how I set up the connections.

The unit is about 7 inches by 5 inches so it doesn't take up too much
room on the desk, and it's built like a tank. A Google search will
bring up several online sources, and they all seem to have the same
price $45 plus shipping. How they can sell the thing for that
price is beyond me.

This would also nicely handle the needs of the upcoming SO4R DXpedition,
although it requires it's own 120 VAC power supply and that might be
inconvenient.

Dave AB7E

Dave, W8FGU, is a good friend of mine, and he's had me "beta testing" a
couple of his creations -- a clear case for the W1 wattmeter, and the
Hexkey cover. I believe his cases are available in both clear and
smoked versions. In addition to keeping the dust off, the Hexkey cover
has a second advantage ... my Hexkey tends to move around just a little
on the surface of the desk. When installed in the cover, the cover is
solid on the desk, and the paddle is solid on the base of the cover.

[Elecraft] K3 RF Gain difference, main and sub

2009-04-12 Thread Mike Scott
I am wondering if the RF gain encoders are read exactly the same between
main and sub receivers.

There is a significant difference in RF gain when I move them both down
together. I can turn the sub Rx RF all the way down and still have
appreciable RF gain, about equivalent to Main at half gain, 12 O'clock.

I monitored both receiver outputs on Spectragram with a noise source going
to both receivers, sharing ANT 1. I believe both receivers had identical
filters and settings. Very different gain response and no ability to reduce
sub Rx gain to zero or very low.

Audio gain tracks very well by ear. I can grab both AF gain controls and
move them together and audio remains balanced. It is quite easy to rotate
them together and have them not move differentially.

73, Guy.

[Elecraft] W1 and HexKey enclosures

2009-04-12 Thread Ken Kopp
I asked Dave about making a smoked W1 enclosure for
me a few weeks ago and I now have the first one. It will
be on display at Visalia, along with other cases by Dave.

Dave's HexKey cover has a bottom that the paddle is set
in before the cover is placed over the key ... a nice feature ...
and the feet are "stickier" that those on the key, as Fred has
mentioned . It amounts to a fully-enclosed "case" for the key.

I've printed a stack of brochures for Dave and will have them
at Visalia.

The adventurous may try the following. These commands do not stick
through power cycles, and may not remain through mode changes or other
commands. In other words, the radio may revert back to normal operation
at any time :)

If you want Main Rx in both ears and leave the Sub Rx in the right ear,
go to the command tester and type:

!bed7;

If you want the Sub Rx in both ears and the Main only in the left, type:

!bef9;

Be sure SPKRS+PH is OFF, or SPKRS=2, with these commands.

Enjoy!

[Elecraft] K3: Optimizing filter offsets for SSB TX and RX

2009-04-12 Thread KM5Q
Continued from: [CQ-Contest] SOME THOUGHTS ON USING THE K3 ON SSB

Reading these messages, I decided I should try adjusting the offset
for my 2.8 8-pole filter from the normal 0. I have been getting good
audio reports, but not "excellent".

Listening during adjustment, I found that as I reached -.20 some high
harshness was reduced. I thought that would be good, as I often find
myself cutting back the HI passband to get a similar effect. Then I
got on the Sunday Elecraft SSB Net. I couldn't get many opinions
because propagation was poor, but I had Phil NS7P give me his
opinion. He reported the least distortion around offset -.20, and
clearly an improvement over the 0 setting. So that's where I have it.
It's an easy test to make, since you can transmit with the CONFIG
window open.

Ever curious, I thought to play with my 2.1 filter offset (just for
receiving of course). I never liked listening to SSB with it because
the highs sounded harsh. As I turned it from the normal 0, down past -.
20, it started to sound better. I preferred around -.40 until I
checked it on a weak CW signal. It was making it weaker in comparison
with the other filters. So I compromised and set it at -.27. I'm happy
with that!

I think this is a good discovery! Maybe it's something the factory
should look into?

I did NOT write that. That was a quote from G3UCK I was replying to regarding
the fact that offsets up to 80 Hz in 8-pole CW filters are not uncommon. I've
not done any testing on SSB or with the 2.8k 8-pole filter since I don't even
have one (and haven't even been on SSB much). Check back with me in a couple
of years when 10 meters opens again! :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Audio Mixer

2009-04-12 Thread David Gilbert

That's VERY slick! And certainly simpler than using an external mixer.
As you say, it goes away with a power cycle, and also when I turn the
SUB off then back on. So far it seems to survive most other changes
I've tried, though ... mode, band, filter, VFO, etc.

I've already programmed one of the command tester macros for it. Is
there an equivalent command to set it back to normal?

Nice work!

2009-04-12 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

If you crank in an offset with the 8 pole filters be sure
you test it with BOTH USB and LSB. An offset that enhances
low frequency response in USB will reduce the LF response in
LSB (enhance high frequency response) and vice versa.

[Elecraft] OT: HexKey Enclosure Now Available

2009-04-12 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hello all,

As Ken (K0PP) and Fred (K6DGW) have mentioned, I finally settled on a
design for the HexKey enclosure and I am now accepting orders. I've
updated my website and you can find info on all of my enclosures here:
http://w8fgu.home.comcast.net/~w8fgu/enclosures.html

I opted to use acrylic as opposed to polycarbonate for this enclosure
because of it's clear glass like appearance. My thought was that this
would be more of a display case than something that would be used in the
field. Although it is not as strong as polycarbonate, it is still five
times stronger than glass. It really showcases the HexKey nicely and
protects it from dust in the shack.

The pieces are all cut on my table saw and welded together by hand. I
then use a propane torch to glaze over the cut edges to give all edges
and corners a polished look and feel. I'm selling the cover and bottom
separately as I have found some of my testers wanted just a cover
without the bottom. The bottom does have six small plastic feet that
hold it to the bench very well and only elevates the key about 3/16". If
you prefer not to have a bottom, I can place small strips of the same
type of plastic used for the feet on the bottom of the cover to prevent
it from sliding around on the bench.

Currently, the cover is made of clear acrylic and the bottom is made
from a smoke colored acrylic. The smoke colored acrylic is somewhat
translucent, so if you desired an all smoke colored enclosure, I can
make one for a few dollars more (the smoke colored acrylic is more
expensive).

I am also taking custom key enclosure orders as well. I've built
enclosures for the Bencher BY series of keys for a number of hams. I
also made a custom round enclosure for the Bencher Mercury Key. I made
it from a 5" diameter cast acrylic tube with a circular acrylic disk
top. It also fits the HexKey as well if a round enclosure is preferred.

As Ken stated, he and his wife Rose will be at the Visalia show this
week with demos of my enclosure line and Eric and Wayne have allowed me
once again to display a few at the Dayton show in May. I will be working
the booth all three days again this year and hope to meet many of you.

Please feel free to contact me through this email address for quotes on
custom key enclosures or any questions about my products.

Thanks for the bandwidth.

73,
Dave W8FGU

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Optimizing filter offsets for SSB TX and RX

2009-04-12 Thread Windy Dankoff
YOU ARE RIGHT, Joe !! I did my trials on USB. On LSB, I can tell by
listening and re-adjusting that you are quite correct. It's back to
zero for me.

I await further comments.

[Elecraft] an Elecraft Tale

2009-04-12 Thread eric norris

I know this list is for technical stuff, but I have to share this story.

I rode my bicycle to a local park today, taking my KX1 into the field for the
first time. I threw a wire up into a tree about 20 ft and laid out a single 16
ft radial. The ATU tuned it up to 1:1 SWR. I looked around and heard KE7LKW
booming in abt 7.041. I called him, he came right back. I thought he was a
local. But he was in White Salmon, WA, and running a K2 at 5w! I couldn't
believe it! I'm in Santa Clara, CA. He QRP'ed down to 1w, I was using an
8-cell AA pack, running about 3.7W. We had a nice chat, I copied him through
all the QSB and QRM. When it was over, I packed up the KX1 into my little bike
bag and rolled off.

This was as exciting as my first QSOs 36 years ago! Unbelievable. Thank you
Elecraft!

Eric WD6DBM

P.S. I still love my K3...and K2!

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for April 12th & 13th, 2009

2009-04-12 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Forty meters was normal: noisy and full of QSB :) But it was nice to hear
folks from all over. Afterward I would have enjoyed a walk in the quiet but
the rain was pretty heavy. Guess I need to invest in some rain gear this year
so I can walk no matter what. The heavy weather does keep the jay wars under
control. I wonder why Hitchcock did not use them as his models? When there
are scraps of potatoes, popcorn, or rice they enjoy my habit of putting out for
them. I also have two basins and a dog dish on the deck where they can wash
and water themselves.
From the list of reports it appears the East, Colorado, Wyoming, and now
here are getting cold. Tomorrow night I am due for more snow. The folks south
of the border report 80 degree weather. Currently the stream of clouds is
aimed slightly north of me. I did get one peek at the sun just before it set.
I expect the folks in Washington are getting the heavy rain I received earlier
today. Those south of me did mention rain earlier in the week so this pattern
is moving slowly northward. Hopefully we will get to the southern part of this
stream so it will be warm rain instead of snow.

   On to the lists =>

AD4CJ - Tim - TN - KX1 - 2075
W0RSR - Mike - CO - K2 - 5767 QNI #85!!!

If there are any errors please email me with the corrections. Now to get
more wood inside while it is still light and the rain is lighter. I hope you
all had a Happy Easter. Try to save some of those chocolate bunnies for later
so you don't get sick! I will watch the sun (remotely of course) over the next
week to see if the next CME is aimed earthward. I will also monitor the birds
and flowers just so I know the area news. Hopefully the trilliums in the wind
blown area will come back. There were a few hundred in that area in years
past. I do miss the calypso orchids but expect they will be dormant until
conditions are just right; they are quite sensitive indicators.
   Until next week stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Optimizing filter offsets for SSB TX and RX

2009-04-12 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

If I wanted to check for filter offsets in the 8 pole
filters, I think I would put them into the main RX
and run response curves (using the K3 Filter Utility
package) in both USB and LSB (or AFSK A NOR and REV).
Set the DSP bandwidth to 4.00 and the center frequency
to 1.50 (SSB) or 2.20 (AFSK A) to minimize the DSP
contribution to the response.

One set of data would need to be inverted and offset
to compare the two responses but one could overlay
the two curves and look for any asymmetry ... I would
check specifically to see if the -3 dB points were
spaced equally above/below the center frequency.

The skirts will not be symmetric in LSB/USB due to the
sharp cutoff near the carrier in USB/LSB (1500 - 1400
= 100 Hz). Any offset may be more apparent using the
AFSK A settings.

   ... Joe, W4TV

This is great Lyle. I hope it makes it into a release soon as a menu option.

Thank you, Gary W7TEA

Assuming you mean Main Left, Sub Right (the same as you get when turning
the Sub ON), try:
