Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

2009-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Rudolf,

Yes, you can safely upgrade without adding hardware mods.
You must leave CONFIG: VFO MD set to SPI1 (default) until after the K3
VFO Noise Reduction Mod has been installed.
That mod is not difficult - just 2 diodes and 2 resistors (all leaded
parts).

Jonathan,

It is not a "well-known problem", but I believe you are correct to
assume the problem source is in the T/R switch. I would suggest that
you check diodes D11, D12 and D14 first - or just replace them, 1N4007s
are plentiful and inexpensive.

Works not so great with the K3, IMHO.

At least up until now, the N1MM programmers reported that they couldn't
really figure out whether the K3 was in split or not - I guess it's a CAT
API software issue. So unless you religiously used alt-F7 to turn the K3
split on/off, Logger would lose track of the split state. I know that the
FT1K/Orion never had this issue - you were free to control split at the rig
and Logger tracked it.

Whether or not the K3 CAT API has been enhanced to make it easier to read
the split state, Logger isn't supporting it yet.

Aside Ran considerable 6m and 222Mhz WSJT meteor scatter weekend before
last for the first time with the K3 ... Yes Yes in SSB mode ... I am aware I
have the Data modes available, very happy with the way things ran. Also had a

Re: [Elecraft] Transverter settings and UPdate

2009-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

Not to worry, those menu settings will be kept through an upgrade.
In general, you only need to pay attention to a menu setting after an
upgrade when something for that particular menu item has been changed
(and you do not like the default). The Release Notes will indicate if a
menu item has been changed.

Sorry, that's nonsense. The K3 has reports SPLIT status in the
auto-information messages and always has done. If I select SPLIT on my K3 by
pressing the front panel button then a red SPLIT indicator displays in

The K3 normally remembers the mode you last used on each band. If you set it
to LSB on 40m then that should not have affected the USB on 20m and it
should remember those modes whenever you change bands. I never experience
the problem you describe.

I suspect that you were using some kind of logging software. If it tries to
set the mode instead of leaving it to the K3 to do that then it could be
causing the problem.

The K3 CAT API makes it extremely easy to tell whether Split
is engaged. Split status (defended as "transmit on VFO B")
is reflected by the "p" byte (byte 33 of 38) in the IF; data.

Direct control and status for the subreceier was recently
implemented [MCU 3.46] in the SB; set/get command but status
has been available in both the IC {MCU 2.51] and DS get
commands for quite a while.

You can hook up the ALC if you want, but don't need to. Just connect the
amp to the keying line on the K3, and the antenna, and you are good to go.
It only takes about 40 watts of drive from the K3 to get 400 plus out of the
ALS-600.

I'm interested in why you turned _on_ the bias. When I look at the Yamaha it
says this is a 'sensitive dynamic microphone', impedance 600 ohms. You do not
use bias with a dynamic microphone. If an electret (condenser mic), yes, the
bias is a must and generally used to power the internal preamp.

So, is this, indeed, an electret or a dynamic microphone?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & ALS 600

2009-11-24 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi Bob,
I do not use ALC with my ALS600 and my K3. Works great without it. Usually
use about 45 Watts in and get about 450 Watts out for MARS on 2.2 to 4.1
MHz. Just connect "key out" on back of K3 to "relay" on back of ALS600.
There is also a recommendation that is worth reading in the K3 manual to not
use ALC for certain purposes.

I am real careful tuning for low swr at 5 watts in first.

You are correct, N1MM Logger is sending the MD; command before
the FA; command. When going from 40 to 20 meters, this changes
the mode on 40 meters to USB then switches to 20. In the other
direction, the mode on 20 is changed to LSB then the K3 is
switched to 40 meters (where it had been set to USB when leaving
the band).

This is a bug in N1MM Logger.

If you choose not to connect the ALC line you need a way to
absolutely prevent the K3 from providing more than approximately
50 Watts of drive. Excess drive will damage the transistors
in the amplifier. You will also be generating a very dirty
signal until the transistors die.

Most Yamaha info on internet about this product is wrong -- the
mc IS an electret, and the physical packaging makes that clear.
Dunno where the error arose -- perhaps a previous version of
this product had a dynamic mic, or maybe the advertising "spec"-
writer did a cut and paste and blew it. Wouldn't be the first
time. :) Ditto with the 600 ohms part.

What the product description SHOULD say is that it is an
electret mic with its response tailored for communications use
and having a very high output. The product comes with a battery
adapter and adapter plugs to allow it to work with products that
don't provide bias. I suspect that this product is targeted to
computer gamers. Be thankful -- we're benefitting from the
potentially large quantities that Yamaha expects from the
product, hence the low price compared to ham products.

For others who asked about where to buy -- the lowest price I've
seen on the internet is Sam Ash in NYC. Don't know if they will
ship abroad. A member of our club arranged a group purchase, and
we paid just under $40. I think we bought about 25 pieces.

You're doing it right. Modern power amps do not need ALC except as
"belt and suspenders" protection when something goes wrong (by
modern, I mean those made in the last 30 years).

The right way to drive a power amp is to control output by setting
drive level from the transceiver (in this case, the K3) AND
carefully tune the power amp for maximum output as read on a meter
in line with the antenna. The combination of these actions minimizes
distortion products from the power amp.

Setting the transceiver to more than the needed drive power and
depending on ALC to reduce the drive often causes the amp to be
overdriven, so it produces distortion (splatter, harmonics). Not
nice.

unanimous agreement that they sounded better than the Heil Pro Set I have.

You could even modify a regular set of headphones you have, just attaching a
boom mike to it. I don't think it would be very hard to do. I have a
couple of pairs of inexpensive (but comfortable) Labtec headphones I really
like, and I've been contemplating converting them to a combo headset. The
headphones were only about $10, and a Radio Shack electret cartridge is only
about $3. At least it would be an interesting project.

[Elecraft] K3 Mem Keys Switch From Macro to Memory

2009-11-24 Thread Don Ehrlich
I've seen how to toggle from Macro back to Memory but cannot find the
instruction.

After loading macros to the M1-M4 keys how do I regain the ability of using
these keys for CW memories?

FWIW, I tried this N1MM Logger feature last night - I hadn't paid
attention to it before. It seems to work fine. I put the K3 into Split
mode with the buttons on the front - not via N1MM Logger, and it was
detected correctly. I didn't run a 48 hour contest with it, but a
quick test seemed to suggest it works well.

The only "gotcha" I noticed is that if you adjust your *RX* frequency
(VFO A) by more than the "tuning tolerance", it will actually knock
you out of Run mode. I think that's a bug - it should not happen that
way when in Split, I think. I'm going to ponder it some more, and
maybe submit a bug report.

Re: [Elecraft] Mode memory by band

2009-11-24 Thread Greg - AB7R
Im not sure but If I understand the problem correctly when using MM to change
to another
band that would have a diff sideband the sequence being executed is:

Start on 20M
Click on the 40M button in MM
sets mode to LSB
sets freq to 7.xxx

I think this is setting the mode on 20M to LSB. So when you return to 20M it
is not on
USB.

As Joe Subich pointed out, if the sequence were changed to:

Click on 40M button in MM
sets freq to 7.xxx
set mode to LSB

this would not effect the mode on the band you are leaving, only the band you
are changing
to.

I have not evaluated this to see the results of the current setup, but there
have been a
couple reports so I suspect the problem is real and should be corrected.

the K3 is also good in that you can select the power output to be band
specific.
(under CONFIG). So if your amp needs 50w on 15 and 35w on 80, set it once
and don't worry about it anymore.

Jim is right, it's an electret.  I bought mine at B & H Photo and paid $45.70

They are showing it out-of-stock at the moment, but if they had it the price is

For others who asked about where to buy -- the lowest price I've
seen on the internet is Sam Ash in NYC. Don't know if they will
ship abroad. A member of our club arranged a group purchase, and
we paid just under $40. I think we bought about 25 pieces.

[Elecraft] [MM] W2 connection problem

2009-11-24 Thread NZ0T

I have no problem connecting to my W2 using the utility directly thru my
laptops port but when I try to use my virtual ports emulator (from
Eterlogic.com) I can't get it to work. It says it is sending and receiving
";" but doesn't do anything else. This port emulator program works great
with my K3 allowing me to run AcLog and K3_EZ at the same time using one
port with a usb/serial adapter. The settings I have in the port emulation
program are:
Speed 9600
DTR/RTS NO
Parity no
Bits 8
Stop bits 1
Read/Interval Timeout -1

I would like to be able to run AcLOg and the W2 computer display at the same
time when it becomes available. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Go slow

Thanks, Kyle. It is set to "Auto". But this was after reloading the
stored, older configuration. So perhaps it was reset to "Not inst"
after loading the new firmware, but why would loading the new firmware

[Elecraft] W2 swr lock and pwr on

2009-11-24 Thread Eric
I received, built, and updated the firmware on mw two W2s yesterday. I found
the swr indications and pwr readings to be more accurate than my Wavenode WN-2.
 Nice job, Elecraft!

I'm wondering (hoping) I will be able to configure swr lock mode to stay on
permanently in the future, as well as have it power up when pwr is applied--I
have it hooked up to the K3 through the power socket and a relay.

The same conditions (being tired and dumber than usual) that woul lead me to
xmit with the amp into the wrong antenna would also have me forget to configure
swr lock mode every time I power up the W2. Having it stay in swr lock mode
would be a great safety feature.

I posted this earlier, and after recalling these suggestions from the
Contesting Compendium by Eric K3NA
(http://wiki.contesting.com/index.php/Category:Setting_receiver_gain_controls)
I tried them and found that the performance was very good indeed. His
explanations of the setup makes it easy.

When implemented as suggested the RF gain effectively becomes a combined
volume/RF gain control and weak DX often pops out of the noise. It's
certainly worth a try.

I'm not sure which Logger feature you tried Iain, but 9.11.0 is the
latest and "Reset RX freq to TX when QSO is logged (RUN & Split)" is
NOT working if you manually put the K3 into split mode, call cq, tune
off freq to pick up a caller and log the qso. VfoA will stay off freq
instead of being matched to vfoB as it should and as it works on other
radios.

I can't explain why it might happen, but on occasion after a firmware
load, especially one that is moving up several generations, it is
possible a config parameter might be altered.

I suspect if you reloaded the new firmware, and experienced the same
unexpected status of the ATU, it could be remedied through the CONFIG menu.

Also, after a major upgrade, and once you see all is working properly, I
recommend doing a configuration save using K3 Utility.

Bill,

Will you clarify something for me?

You mentioned a terminal emulator. If I understand you correctly, with this
emulator, you can run two separate applications (a logging program and the
K3 utility) at the same time. ...and that both of these applications are
accessing and controlling the K3 at the same time via it's serial port. Is
this correct?

My second question concerns the W2. How is the computer connection made to
the W2? Is it not made directly to the W2? What cable goes where?

Strangeness with the DVR.

If I press M1-4 to initiate a memory call all is OK. If I then hold M1-4
while the message is sending to enable repeat mode, on the first cycle the
PTT does not drop at the end of teh call for a couple of seconds, then all
continues as normal. If I simple initiate with a hold, the first message
does not have the extra PTT hold.

Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 connection problem - NZ0T Comment

2009-11-24 Thread Julian, G4ILO

What program are you trying to talk to the W2 with? Can you use the terminal
in the K3 Utility to send commands to it? The idea being to establish
whether there is a problem with the particular software you are using and
VSPE. Does it work if you connect to the real serial port without VSPE and
any other program running?

Sorry I don't have a W2 so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree here. But I
do know that I can't use the latest version of Fldigi with VSPE, which does
suggest to me that some programs may not like working with VSPE for some
unknown reason.

[Elecraft] Rev C KPA3 ??

2009-11-24 Thread O. Johns
Dear Wayne and Eric,

The alert "K3/100 Rev C KPA3 Spurious TX" has alerted me to the fact that
there IS a Revision C of the KPA3. Apparently, it began shipping sometime in
the spring of 2009. Maybe one of you could tell us in some detail about the
differences between Rev C and Rev B. In particular:

(1) Do the two revisions use the same transistors?

(2) Are the IMD numbers different?

(3) How and why is the circuit diagram different?

(4) Would it benefit a customer with Rev B or earlier if he upgraded to the
Rev C?

Thank you for the fine product.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 in SS SSB

2009-11-24 Thread Greg - AB7R
Tried calling back.

BTW...if you want to do this, program your B>A FUNCTION in CONFIG to the PF1
key. Then
in the MM "TU" macro use {CAT1ASC K31;SWH45;} at the end. This will exectue
the PF1
key and set the VFO B freq back to VFO A.

Macro to set up using VFO A as RIT for Split:

This macro should work (im not at my puter right now).

SWT13;SWT13;FT1;LK$1;RT0;XT0;

This should do A>B, A>B, enter split mode, lock VFO B, RIT off and XIT off

To reset so that both VFOs are the same just use the PF1 key you used for the
MM macro.

To turn this process off use the same macro saved to annother key and replace
LK$1 with
LK$0. This should equalize the VFOs and UNlock VFO B.

Wayne,

If that macro works it may be a good one to include in the next programming
reference
update.

This was primarily a manufacturing driven evolutionary revision to make
the KPA3 easier to build here, improve yields and to reduce mfg assembly

Have you tried the demo version of this:
http://www.serialportsplitter.com/splitter.html ? It might help determine
whether the problem is with the emulation of VSPE or something else.

Unfortunately the only other free serial port splitter I know of is com0com
http://com0com.sourceforge.net/ and I couldn't get that to work at all.
There is also LP-Bridge http://www.telepostinc.com/LPB.html but that
emulates a K3 in memory and I don't know whether it would work with a W2.

The diode mod to ensure the K3 reliably turns off was incorporated into

Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 connection problem - NZ0T Comment

2009-11-24 Thread Dan
Thanks for the reply Bill, but I'm still confused.

Will you be running more than one application on the W2 through this port?
If not, then what is the purpose of using the emulator program as opposed to
defining a port via the operating system? (If you are using usb/serial
adaptors, you can define as many serial ports via the operating system as
you like, right?)

Believe me, I'm not being critical. I'm not a computer jock, and I'm trying
to understand.

I use a logging program that I like very much (DX4WIN), and I would like to
be able to use it at the same time as the K3 utility, both addressing the
K3. If I understand you correctly, I could make use of the emulator program
to run both programs at the same time.

Thanks,
Dan - W4TQ

[Elecraft] ANN: KComm 1.8 released

2009-11-24 Thread Julian, G4ILO

This is just a quick note to draw the attention of anyone interested to the
fact that KComm 1.8 for Windows and Linux has been released. For full
information, screenshot and a download see the link below.

KComm is a general purpose logging program exclusively for K2 and K3
transceivers, similar to MixW (in fact it uses an identical log file
format.) It's unique feature is that it supports CW keying of the K2 and K3
(and PSK31 / RTTY sending with the K3) using the serial CAT protocol.

The Windows version uses the latest PSK31 Core DLL to provide full featured
sound card PSK digital operation supporting PSK31, PSK63 and PSK125. It also
has a PSK browser (decodes everything in a 2.4KHz passband) and can send
spotted calls to PSK Reporter website. It also has hooks to interoperate
with CW Skimmer and MRP40 (a CW decoder). On both Windows and Linux it
interoperates with Fldigi to allow operation on a wide range of digital
modes. Virtual Serial Port Emulator (VSPE) is needed for optimum use with CW
Skimmer and Fldigi.

KComm has been developed using the cross platform Free Pascal development
tool Lazarus. A Mac OS version would likely be possible if a) someone buys
me a Mac :) or b) someone with a Mac and a bit of Pascal programming savvy
installs Lazarus and downloads and compiles the source code. This is free
software released under the GPL and users are encouraged to download the
source code and add their own feature enhancements, especially as from my
perspective the program is more or less finished and I'm not expecting to do
very much more to it.

KComm is not a full contest logger like N1MM though it has contest support
including Cabrillo log export suitable for casual contest operation. Nor is
it a replacement user interface for the radio like HRD so if you are looking
for that kind of thing it is not for you. It is old fashioned lean, mean
software and the download is only 1MB.

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset is a WINNER (and a BARGAIN)

2009-11-24 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I've had excellent results from the little Radio Shack electret mike
cartridges too. They are spec'd flat from about 50 Hz to 16KHz, so any
audio "shaping" happens external to the mike, usually in the rig. That's the
right place to do it.

And they only set you back a couple of dollars -

..I have another suggestion some might want to try. My biggest concern with

most of these headsets is finding one that has really good earphones--they
vary a lot. If you find one you really like, and don't think the microphone

is good enough, you might try just replacing the cartridge with one from
Radio Shack. I've made several electret microphones, all of which got very
good reports as to audio, using the Radio Shack cartridge. There was
unanimous agreement that they sounded better than the Heil Pro Set I have...

True. It's just like the Icom radios; you have to turn the Split on
and off from the program to keep things synchronized. This is a pain
in the patootie, but the reset in Split function sure is useful. I'm
grateful it works as well as it does -- it doesn't work at all with
my FT-1000D, which won't accept the reset command at the particular
time it's sent by the code. Maybe the developers (I think K3CT does
the radio control code) will get it fixed soon.

yes dan you could use the same program I do to do that. I have not tried to
run the K3 utility through it but I have run K3_EZ with my logging program
and it works well. I think I will need to run the W2 with a seperate cable
to a different port on my computer to run it too.

[Elecraft] Adapting Icom SM-20 Electret Mic for K3

2009-11-24 Thread Phil Hystad
I like my Icom SM-20 Electret Mic and from what I have learned so far there
should be no reason why I cannot adapt this for use with my future (ordering
next month) K3.

I don't plan to physically modify the SM-20 but rather create an adapter that
accepts the 8-pin plug from the SM-20 and then that would be wired to an 8-pin
plug to plug into the K3. I know I would have to wire this adapter to deal
with the fact that the pins are not used in the same way for the Icom versus
the Kenwood style wiring.

And, I assume that the bias voltage that the mic needs can be supplied by the
K3. I have no idea what this is but I presume it is somewhere in the range of
5 to 12 volts.

If this plan has flaws please let me know. Also, I am not sure if the mic
impedance would match up with the K3 so if anyone has a comment there I would
appreciate it.

Thanks,
phil, K7PEH

So it was a bad unit. Good to know. Also sounds like you had a good dealer.
Thanks for the report. And it sounds like you're set up well.

Important note here. With ANY mic for the K3 (and with line feeds from a
computer), the important thing to watch are NOT the numerical settings of the
controls, but the amount of meter movement of COMP and ALC. Follow Elecraft's
instructions carefully here -- that is, set mic gain for the right ALC action
when you talk before turning up Compression, then add Compression and look for
no more than about 10dB on peaks.

Have you tried the demo version of this:
http://www.serialportsplitter.com/splitter.html ? It might help determine
whether the problem is with the emulation of VSPE or something else.

Unfortunately the only other free serial port splitter I know of is com0com
http://com0com.sourceforge.net/ and I couldn't get that to work at all.
There is also LP-Bridge http://www.telepostinc.com/LPB.html but that
emulates a K3 in memory and I don't know whether it would work with a W2.

Re: [Elecraft] Adapting Icom SM-20 Electret Mic for K3

2009-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Phil,

The K3 provides bias sourced at 8 volts.
Yes, your homebrew adapter to change the microphone pinout will work
just fine.
Don't worry about the impedance thing. Most all microphones for mdern
amateur gear are of the "low impedance" variety. Now, if you are
considering some of the antique microphones like the original
(unamplified) D-104, they must work into a high impedance (greater than
100k and preferrably 1 megohm) to give good performance. Typical modern
amateur microphones will work into impedances ranging from 1k to 300
ohms with no problem. There are only two impedance ranges to consider -
Hi-Z for antique transceivers driving a vacuum tube grid directly, and
Lo-Z for driving most solid state transceivers - the latter is often
stated to be "600 ohms", but the actual impedance will vary all over
that range.

When at "CONFIG:CW WGHT", tap '1' to select "SSB +CW".

Don't know why it's not working for you - works fine for me. I'm using
K3 firmware revision 2.63 and N1MM Logger V9.11.0. I do have LP-Bridge
in the middle. Perhaps that's actually helping it to work?? I'll try
without at some point.

When you put your K3 in split mode, does the word "Split" appear to
the right of the "Buck" button in the N1MM Logger entry window?
