Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor feedback
Mike, Are you using headphones when you turn up the monitor? If you are using the speaker, the microphone will pick up the speaker sound and result in a lot of acoustical feedback. 73, Don W3FPR Mike wrote: > I was playing with ALC and compression settings tonight, and turned on > the monitor function. [Elecraft] K3 Monitor feedback
I was playing with ALC and compression settings tonight, and turned on the monitor function. If I turn it up high enough to hear myself (around 9), I get a loud BRR squeal, that has an echoic component. Difficult to describe. I don't recall hearing that when I first set up the mic. I have V3.63. How can I regain use of the monitor? Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 signal tracing progress and questions arising
Hi Don (again!) I was following the steps in the signal tracing checklist that say with 25mV in to the AF amp I should get 1.6V out with the speaker disconnected and I don't. I've checked the signal path from the audio amp to the speaker connector and there are no shorts or open circuits. The BFO is around 1V pk pk so that looks healthy as do the other oscillators. The post mixer amp is working OK as are the pre-amp and attenuator. Loss through the CW filter checks out also. That leaves the IF amp, the detector and the AF amp. I can peg the S meter with the generator. AGC voltage with no signal is set at 3.8V (this is a rev A K2 remember). Something is definitely wrong somewhere though as a 50uV signal is quiet even with AGC off. One thing I have noticed with AGC off is that if I set the RF gain so that the IF chain is just out of clipping there is still low audio (if that helps) Lots of head scratching going on here. Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware upgrade speeds and problems
It is not a matter of blaming Elecraft, K1EL, Green Heron, the various software authors or any other ham radio vendor or person. It is a matter of trying to find the combination that will work and hoping that someone is smart enough to know how, or lucky enough to stumble on the secret, or that collective wisdom is better than each of us trying to go it alone. It is no use complaining to Microsoft, HP, Dell or any of the other computer vendors who would tell us to forget Ham Radio and spend our time playing World of Warcraft or some other games where they can make multi-bucks. So, we try to get wisdom from some one who might care. Sometimes it works, sometimes it is misunderstood as attacking the hands that feed us. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2: SSB issue, excessive drive
Rob, Yes, there does seem to be something extreme in your problem description. The K2 does have the greatest TX gain on 40 or 30 meters, but it should not drop off so fast on the higher bands. I would start by removing the KPA100 and testing the base K2 for maximum power output on 40 meters vs. 10 meters. If you cannot get more than 12 watts on 10 meters with a power supply voltage of 13.8 volts, then something is wrong. Have you changed R98 on the bottom of the RF Board to reduce the oscillation of output power level with the KPA100 added? If so, you may have too large a resistor at R98 (the normal value is 270 ohms). Use no larger than the value that does not reduce the 10 meter output level. You can gain better 10 meter output from the base K2 by mounting T2 above the board (use two layers of foam double sided tape) and wind T2 EXACTLY like the diagram in the manual. If all else fails, replace the 2sc2166 transistor at Q6 with a 2SC5739 which has greater gain at higher frequencies (new K2s use that part), but along with that change, increase R46 to 330 ohms. Your 15 dB mic preamp gain is a little too high - to compensate between a Heil HC4/5 cartridge and an electret mic, you should only need about 10 dB. Check the KSB2 board to be certain you have the value of R14 at its normal 1k value if you are using the Heil mic with a preamp. 73, Don W3FPR Rob KK4R wrote: > Before getting into the problem description, I have done some homework and > know that others have had similar problems, so I'm hoping to tap into some > experience. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 signal tracing progress and questions arising
Paul, Do you have a sufficient signal level to give you 1.6 volts out of the AF amplifier? The impedance of the amplifier's input is considerably higher than the impedance connected to the output, so the AC voltages may actually be similar in and out. Can you peg the S-meter with your signal generator? Most problems with "low audio" are actually caused earlier in the receive chain. Check to see if you have at least 200 mV peak to peak (70 mV RMS) of BFO at RF Board U11 pin 6. The diodes (D40 and D41) across the input of the IF amplifier will clip at a level lower than the "Saturated" test, so that item in the Signal Tracing section is no longer possible to do. What is the input vs. output from the IF amplifier U12. If there is not a significant increase, you may have a bad IF amplifier or T7 may be mounted backwards (red winding goes closest to U12), or the AGC voltage to the IF amplifier may be too high (check U12 pin 5, it should be no higher than 3.9 volts). 73, Don W3FPR Paul Fletcher wrote: > > > OK - have done the checks and re-soldered a few connections and I'm now > happy that the attenuation in the pre-mixer stages is OK. [Elecraft] [K2] K2: SSB issue, excessive drive
Before getting into the problem description, I have done some homework and know that others have had similar problems, so I'm hoping to tap into some experience. The problem is with high gain in the SSB transmit chain on 40 meters versus 10 meters. Folks often perceive these problems as high ALC indications and distortion. I haven't used my K2/100 much for SSB in the year that I have had it. Our club has a 10 m net, so I started checking into that and found my Heil mic produced light but adequate audio with around 1 ALC bar showing. VOX was effectively useless. A second mic, a homemade electret, had more audio, moved the ALC about 3 bars and operated the VOX. Mistakenly thinking this was all about mic output level, I made a 15 dB preamp for the Heil, and it seemed to work great. All that was on 10 meters. Last weekend, I decided to give it a workout in the SSB SS contest. Using the Heil and preamp, things seemed to be going great on 15 m, but as I moved down to 20 m, the autotuner kicked in a few times unexpectedly. I was watching the ALC and had noticed about 5 or 6 bars, which didn't strike me as a problem. Nobody complained about my audio, but I think the autotuner action was due to some serious distortion. When I moved down to 40 m, the K2 was clearly red-lined. The ALC maxed, and the autotuner tried to retune on every transmission, when the antenna was well matched already. Finally, somebody let me know that my audio was terrible. The poor fellow was doing me a favor, but he was apologetic. I guess some folks are sensitive about their audio and must bite your head off if you comment on it. I started changing things immediately and asking for audio reports as I went. Compression and gain settings in the K2 didn't really matter. The preamp had to come out of line and the boom mic was turned out from my face to get the ALC reading below 5 bars, and finally, somebody said my audio was OK. I think at this point, the K2 was set for the -10 dB mic gain setting. So I had dropped about 25 dB of gain in the electronics and moved the mic away from my face, pointing it in the wrong direction, before I could get down to 5 bars of ALC. The antenna tuner still tried to retune once in a while, if I raised my voice, so that was the end of the test. I switched to my old TS-940 and let it go. >From reading various posts, it is clear that others have had some problems like this. Either under-drive on 10 meters or extra drive on 40 meters has been talked about on the reflector. My case seems extreme. A variable mic output from +15dB down to -30dB might mitigate it, but this seems a bit ridiculous. Besides, there might be something wrong in the K2 that could be fixed. [Elecraft] [K3] M1-M4: Can the CW Paddle that has four memory switches, be wired directly to the K3? Switches built into paddle base.
I have a favorite paddle that has four SPST mini- spring switches built into its base, intended to activate cw memories in an external keyer (which I don't have). It's probably futile to think I can directly wire those switches up to the K3 and somehow activate M1 - M4, but just thought I'd ask here. Again, there's no external paddle here, and the preference is not to build any circuitry to make this work. [Elecraft] FIRMWARE UPDATES AND CHANGED CONFIG VALUES
Every once in a while firmware updates do result in changed CONFIG values. I suspect this results from user customized settings being changed back to default values as a result of new coding affecting specific functions. After every update I run through the CONFIG bank to see which values, if any, I need to change back to my customized settings. Rarely do they change, and checking them usually takes all of two minutes. Saving the settings in the Utility would do it even quicker, but I enjoy knob twiddling more than key punching. I also trust my ability to knob twist more than I do my ability to handle the Utility. In any event, not a few postings could be avoided by checking and restoring your CONFIG values first before turning to the reflector. Furthermore, printing out a running copy of the /K3 Firmware Release Notes/ and keeping them in a 3-hole binder is a quick and easy way to find out how to /restore /CONFIG values you have previously changed. These /Notes/ are always more current than the /K3 Owner's Manual/. Plus . . . (perhaps the most important of all) . . . referring to the /Notes/ on a regular basis updates the brain on all the enhancements which have accrued (and will continue to accrue) to the K3. 73, Kent K9ZTV Someone wrote: > I believe that up until my last (the latest) firmware update my K3 had the > ability to send CW whilst listening in SSB mode. [Elecraft] K3 firmware upgrade speeds and problems
I have found it very interesting reading the various reports of firmware upgrade issues when installing new firmware releases to the K3. I am wondering if it has something to do with the interconnect between the computer and the K3; and especially if one is using a USB/RS232 converter. I purchased my K3 at Dayton this year and have done every Beta upgrade and all went flawlessly. That said, I am using a RS-232 port on my computer (Com 1) to connect directly to the radio. My experience with the USB to RS232 converters has not been all that great; and from what I have picked up from "third class rumors" (similar to ones you might overhear in a men's restroom), not all USB/RS232 converters are created equally (some work all the time, some work some of the time, and other never work any of the time). And one other "tidbit" of information that I read in the US Interface Navigator Installation Manual was to avoid using COM 3; the manual says; for some reason (known only to the computer gods and maybe Bill Gates) COM 3 can be grabbed by other programs" So, to solve that problem, when I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 last week, I also "upgraded" to seven RS232 ports on the back of the computer. I only need six (K3, two rotor controllers, satellite antenna control, IC-910H control, and last but not least a DSP-2232 data controller), so that gives me a spare for possible future use. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Config: BAT MIN missing?
Tom, It is still here on my K3 with 3.63 - right between AUTOINF and BND MAP - the menu items are in alphabetical order (thankfully). [Elecraft] New Shift Option
I am happy to get the new 10 hz shift control. Been waiting on that since I bought the radio. It works great. Just in time for the CQ WW. Next thing I would like to see is more than 1 selection for RX EQ. Need one setup for CW and one for SSB. Keep up the good work.. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] HEIL BM-10 or HEIL Traveler for K2
Hello Samir ... I'm not familiar with the BM-10 but do have a Traveler for use with my ICOM 7000 that I sometimes use for portable excursions. So can't comment about the audio with a K2, but I would not recommend the Traveler for contest work because of its construction. It is very light and flimsy without any good retention on the ear(s). It is OK for short periods of time, but would be annoying for a long contest! For contests with my K3 I really like my JRC mono headphones - VERY comfortable and nice for communications audio. If you need/want stereo, lots of people are recently recommending the Yamaha CM500, although I have not personally tried them. 73 ... Re: [Elecraft] Special offer
Hi All, It's a really good deal, particularly when you see that ARRL is selling them for $20 more, and that is supposedly $10 off the regular price. I already ordered (and received) one from Bill Kelsey (Kanga US). It cost a bit more, but the shipping was less, so around the same price--and I got the hardbound version at that price. As soon as I saw the Elecraft offer, I passed in on to a friend (who will soon be a K3 owner). He had seen my copy, and wanted one. I was a little disappointed when he told me what the postage was, but maybe Bill Kelsey ate the "processing" part. Anyway, it's a really good buy, and the 2010 Handbook is loaded with good stuff. I don't know what's going on with all the "deals" this year from ARRL on this new version, but clearly this is the year to buy a new edition if you haven't updated recently. Even Dayton prices on new editions haven't been this good! Don't forget that you also get a CD with the entire book contained therein, so you can also have the whole thing at your fingertips when you travel, etc. Dave W7AQK - Original Message - From: "r miles" To: "elecraft" Sent: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 9:27 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Special offer > Just ordered a handbook. Re: [Elecraft] HEIL BM-10 or HEIL Traveler for K2
I found the pressure of the Traveler became uncomfortable after an hour or so. I much prefer around-the-ear muffs not pressure on the ear. [Elecraft] Wanted: SoftRock
One of the things that has been in the back of my mind for some time to add to KComm is a panoramic display. To do this I would need a) to find some code for converting I and Q data from the sound card to a wiggly line and b) an SDR receiver to hang off the IF output of the K3. It occurs to me that some people may have SoftRocks they are using for this which will become surplus to requirements once Elecraft begins shipping the K3. If so, I could offer a good home to one. - Julian, G4ILO.
